4. COMMUNITY SUPPORT
UP2US DECEMBER 2009
A young woman was living far from home in a children’s unit and just wanted to be at
home with her parents and as many Lady Gaga CDs as she could humanly own.
Up2Us came along and said we could manage the plan to get her home. We listened to
the Gaga and slowly she began to trust us and share her ideas and her thoughts about
her life. She thought Lady Gaga was mad and so made the star her idol.
Over the next 11 years we supported this young woman through many crisis placements
and critical episodes of mental health until she became a fully engaged citizen who has
not only achieved academically – but has gone on to university to begin a nursing career.
At each stage, Up2Us has helped her to explore her life and served to remind her that not
only is she intelligent but hugely valued. That’s what Up2Us does - we support and value
young people until they can value themselves. We are proud to have been a part of her
journey. She played with her heart and soul and won!

5. UP2US SAVED

“Up2Us saved my life, fought for my rights and advocated on my behalf.
They genuinely cared about me and the long-term outcome for my future.
Without the support from Up2Us, I would not be here today and would not have
progressed into the person I am.
I thank them for their continued support even when I was difficult. They have
been the best team of people who have supported me through the many
difficult times in my life.
One of a kind, they never give up on me.
My Mum says it’s the support that Up2Us gave them as parents that helped me
to stay with my family.

Up2Us are looking for people with a mixture of skills and experience to join their Board.
If you feel Up2US is an organisation that you might want to get involved with, and would like to find
out more, please get in touch with Mark Mackill.
We’re interested in hearing from people from a variety of backgrounds so whilst people with
experience of the charitable sector, social care, health or children’s welfare might seem like the best
fit, don’t worry if that’s not you – it wasn’t me!
We’re aiming for Board members with a broad range of skills and experience be it Human Resources,
Legal, Finance or just general business.

Up2Us has secured matching funding for an initiative that would make a huge difference to the
support they offer and to the ongoing sustainability of the charity.
