As Dunaway argued in his article, images are prominent and powerful mediators of our culture’s beliefs about issues like race, class, gender, politics, and sustainability. Analyzing images, then, can help us gain a clearer understanding of the role media and organizations play in forming and perpetuating Americans’ views of environmentalism and sustainability. For your final paper, you will analyze an image that makes a statement or argument about the sustainability issue you focused your lit review and argument-driven article on. The image may be an advertisement, a flyer, a sign, a poster, a magazine cover, etc. Your analysis should be a rich one since you will have a greater understanding of the larger issue(s) surrounding the image’s message(s) after researching and writing your literature review and article. Your analysis will focus on what messages the image sends to its target audience about environmentalism or sustainability, how the artifact sends those messages (the rhetorical tactics used to persuade the audience), and how those messages may affect the audience’s beliefs and actions.
To Write Your Essay:
· Be sure to describe your image for your audience before you analyze it. Assume, here, that your audience is not looking at your image and needs to know what type of image it is (ad, poster, flyer, etc.), what it looks like, what it says, and where you found it.
· Make an argument about what messages you think the image is sending its audience about environmentalism and/or sustainability. Is it saying something about who is responsible for the problem and/or for solving the problem? Is it saying something about the consequences of environmental irresponsibility? Is it saying something about the issue in relation to race, class, or gender? Is it arguing for or against a particular practice or product related to sustainability? Etc.?
· To support your argument, tell your audience how the image is sending these messages. What rhetorical tactics are the creators of the image using to send these messages? How do the visual images, the text, the arrangement, etc. help send a particular message? Is it employing ethos, logos, and/or pathos to persuade its audience? If so, how?
· Discuss the implications of the messages the image is sending. How might the messages affect the audience’s beliefs or actions?
**Throughout the essay, think about how you might draw upon your larger understanding of the issues at hand in the image based on your work for the previous two papers. Will that knowledge help you understand and interpret the image’s messages? Can you use it to engage your readers in the introduction and/or contextualize your analysis in the conclusion?

We will complete this first essay of English 28 in three to four steps, with you having to bring in the first

Visual advertisement?
• Find either a television (or online) commercial advertisement, or a print ad in a magazine or
newspaper that particularly interests you. After reading the “Introduction,” the first 2-3
chapters of Everyone’s an Author, as well as the other readings and videos on rhetoric from
Module 2, you will utilize the terminology and ideas from the readings to analyze what the
advertisers were thinking when they aimed to persuade a specific audience about their project.
• How is the message working in terms of its utilization of specific visuals, colors, sound, words,
music, composition and placement of product and people? What is it about these elements
that makes the advertisement particularly intriguing?
• Rhetorically, how did the creators of the advertisement think of the text’s purpose, audience,
context, and subject as well as the relationship between all these elements?
Background on Rhetorical Analysis:
Every piece of writing, every painting, every movie, every article written, and every
advertisement created is produced with a specific context (or contexts) in mind, and with the creator
thinking of how he/she can reach and connect with a certain audience. An essential part of your higher
education is to increase your awareness of the creator-audience relationship that exists in any form of
writing, art, or “communication.” And with this increased awareness, you will then broaden your
understanding of what the most effective forms of communication – writing, reading, and speaking –
are, as well as know how and where you can most effectively insert yourself within our society’s various
forms of interaction. This is sometimes considered ‘critical’ reading and writing.
That being said, critical reading and viewing are essential skills for not only being an informed
and astute citizen, but also for all kinds of writing. Analysis is a more specific aim where those critical

- 9. Tasks • Choose one of the previous examples. • Answer one of the two proposed questions in each of the following slides (You will have a choice of two questions in each tasks and you can choose which one you want to answer)
- 10. Task 1 (10 marks) 1. Analyse the different social and cultural representations in Sources A and B. • Apply Van Zoonen’s theory of representation in your answer. or 1. Analyse the different representations of gender in Sources A and B. • Apply one appropriate theory of representation in your answer. Note: Regardless of your choice, in your answer you must refer to the ideology of each newspaper and explain how this ideology is represented in their front covers.
- 11. Task 2. Option 1 (15 marks) Explain how these newspaper front covers represent social, cultural and political events. In your answer you must: • analyse how media representations are constructed in these newspapers front covers through the selection and combination of text and image to convey values, attitudes and beliefs. • make judgements and draw conclusions on the effectiveness of the representation of national identity through the media form.
- 12. Task 2. Option 2 (15 marks) Evaluate how these different newspaper front covers use elements of media language to convey different values, attitudes and beliefs about the world. In your answer you must: • analyse the ways in which media language has been used to convey values, attitudes and beliefs about Brexit. • refer to relevant contexts and academic ideas and provide arguments in your analysis. • draw judgements and conclusions in relation to the question.
- 13. Task 3. Option 1 (15 marks) 2. Sources A and B cover the same news event from two different tabloid newspapers. How far have media conventions been used to construct viewpoints in Sources A and B? In your answer you must: • outline the conventions of the front pages of tabloid newspapers, including use and style of headlines and images. • analyse the contrasting use of symbolic, technical and written conventions in the sources. • make judgements and reach conclusions on the way in which media conventions construct viewpoints and ideologies.

How far has the combination of elements of media language influenced meaning in the sources? In your answer you must: • explain how the combination of elements of media language influences meaning in newspapers. • analyse how media language has been used to construct meaning in the sources. • make judgements and reach conclusions about how far the combination of elements of media language has influenced meaning in the sources.
