The Newington Road Pedestrian Bridge in Lorton, Virginia was structurally damaged and needed replacement. The project involved removing the old bridge and lifting in a new bridge matching the existing abutments and anchor bolt pattern. This required closing Newington Road and detouring traffic, notifying residents, and using cranes to lift the old and new bridges over power lines in approximately 1.5 hours with minimal disruption. The replacement bridge project was paired with another nearby to get a more cost effective bid.

Spring Hill Metro Emergency Sewer ReplacementFairfax County
This emergency project replaced approximately 60 feet of 10-inch wastewater sewer pipe that was broken during the installation of an electricity utility conduit. The project included installation of an emergency wastewater bypass pumping system, excavation and removal of the broken wastewater sewer pipe, installation of new manholes, and rehabilitation of the work site. The repairs were conducted between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. to limit disruptions to traffic in this busy corridor.
Route 1 Northbound - Quander Rd to Hotel ComplexFairfax County
The Route 1 NorthBoud Quander Road to Hotel Complex project included construction of approximately 214 linear feet of concrete gravity retaining wall (RW-3), 517 linear feet of concrete sidewalk, handrail, guardrail, curb cut ramps, curb and gutter, mill and overlay, pavement marking and signage, water quality structures and drainage improvements and relocation of fire hydrant.
The Dead Run Drive Outfall Restoration project was substantially completed on August 27, 2018. The primary goals of this project were to address public safety concerns, stabilize an eroded channel by using natural stream design techniques, promote the growth of native vegetation and improve water quality. The natural channel design techniques used, such as a reinforced bed mix riffle sections and step pools, reduce the flow velocity, provide stability, and enhance water quality along the streams leading to the Chesapeake Bay. The disturbed areas of the site were restored with native shrubs, plants and trees.
The Terrett Court Storm Drainage Improvement project was substantially completed on June 4, 2018. The primary goals of this project were to address public safety concerns, rehabilitate the failed storm pipe and improve drainage through the County storm conveyance system. The rehabilitation included pipe replacement using polypropylene pipe and installing a cured-in-place pipe liner to extend the life of the existing storm pipe. The use of these materials significantly minimized the disturbance between dwellings while providing an extended life cycle to the storm conveyance system. The disturbed areas of the site were restored with native shrubs, plants and trees.

Kirby Road Emergency Gravity Sewer Repair Completed November 2020Fairfax County
In August 2020 Wastewater Collection employees responded to an odor complaint. They used closed circuit television to find a cross bore. After research, it was found that the cross bore was accidently created by Dominion Energy. Staff worked with the property owner and Dominion Energy to relocate the electrical conduit and repair the 8-inch sanitary sewer. The project was completed on November 23, 2020.
Little River Turnpike, Backlick Rd. Emergency Sewer Repair Sept 2020Fairfax County
The emergency repair of an 8-inch sanitary sewer link in Little River Turnpike and Backlick Road replaced a severely defective 8-inch concrete sewer pipe with new PVC pipe to prevent sanitary sewer overflows in the travel lanes of Little River Turnpike and Backlick Rd. in Annandale, VA.

Merrifield Nursery Emergency Gravity Sewer ReplacementFairfax County
During a routine Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera inspection by Wastewater Collection Division (WCD), it was found that 45 linear feet of 8-inch asbestos reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between MH-292 to MH-291 was within imminent danger of failing. The bottom of the RCP was missing within the 45 linear feet of repair and the pipe was on the verge of surcharging. After an immediate pre-construction meeting with Merrifield Nursery, it was agreed to work from 6pm-10am everyday of the week to avoid disruption and potentially placing patrons at risk during the biggest time of the year for Merrifield Garden Center. The contractor mobilized to the site and began the 20-foot excavation to replace 45 linear feet of broken gravity sewer. The project started on March 14th, 2022 and was substantially complete on March 23, 2022.
The Sully Basins Stormwater Pond Retrofits project was substantially completed on April 19, 2022. The project is located within the Cub Run watershed. The project consisted of repair and enhancement of multiple stormwater basins, 0326DP, 0964DP and 1484DP. The project also included construction of new stone cascades, stone weir basin structures and the construction of wetlands with high and low marsh areas. The project will facilitate improved sediment removal and improve downstream water quality using forebays and micro pools. Aquatic and natural habitat were also added within the three basins.

The Clarks Crossing Road Pedestrian Access Improvement project improved the pedestrian and bicycle access along Clarks Crossing Road and was substantially completed on March 23, 2022.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Description:
Removal of structurally damaged pedestrian bridge and replacement with a new bridge matching the
existing abutments and anchor bolt pattern. This bridge replacement project was paired with
another nearby bridge replacement by matching the size and specifications of each replacement
bridge for a cost effective bid response from various competing bridge fabricators.
Project Overview:
Newington Rd. closure and detour in coordination with FCPS busing schedule and notification to
police and fire and rescue services.
Notification to motorists with advance warning message boards.
De-energizing electrical power to 180 residences and 1 business with advance notice.
Lifting of existing four ton pedestrian bridge over power and communications lines to awaiting
trailer and lifting new bridge into place.
Road closure, local power outage, and lifting operations were completed in approximately 1-1/2
hours.

Both the top cord and lower chord of the structural truss was
damaged when a large tree fell on the bridge, which compromised
the long term integrity of the bridge.
