The Wakefield Park South Stream Restoration project was substantially completed on budget and ahead of schedule on August 17,
2016. The project consisted of restoring approximately 2,700 linear feet of combined unnamed tributaries to Accotink Creek
using natural channel design techniques.
Project Overview:
• Establishment of new and stable channel geometry and plant form
• Reconnection of the channel with its floodplain by raising the stream bed
• Placement of a reinforced bed mix material to stabilize the stream bed
• Repairing a failing outfall storm drain structure by consolidating it into another adjacent storm drain outfall system
• Stabilization of the stream bed and banks, reduction of erosion through the installation of various in-stream structures to
include: Imbricated Rock Walls and toe protection, Log and Rock Sills, Boulder Riffles, Rock Step Pools, Modified Cross-Vanes
• Creation of overbank wetland areas and providing surface and buried woody debris to support habitat improvement
• Reduction of 4,360 lbs. of total nitrogen per year, 1,829 lbs. of total phosphorus per year, and 315 tons of sediment per year
leading to Accotink Creek
Project Team:
• Stormwater Planning Division – Dave Anglin
• Utilities Design and Construction Division (UDCD) –Yudhie Brownson, Tammy Michelli
• Land Survey Branch, UDCD - Pat Gallahan, Mike Perry, Larry Randall, Cody Harp-Taylor
