This document summarizes a project to stabilize an existing storm sewer outfall in Fairfax County, Virginia. The project included constructing a rip-rap lined channel and two check dams to reduce flow velocity and stop erosion at the outfall. Description:
The Nancemond Street Outfall Stabilization was substantially completed on March 9, 2015. The existing storm
sewer outfall is located north of Nancemond Street, adjacent to properties located at 7504 and 7506 Nancemond
Street. The project included stabilization improvements to the existing storm sewer outfall by constructing a rip-rap
lined channel and two check dams. The new improvements will reduce the flow velocity, stop the advancing Head-
Cut and provide stability and enhance water quality.
Project Overview:
• Clearing and grubbing the site
• Excavating the outfall to construct the proposed V-outfall ditch
• Placing geotextile fabric along and beneath the stones of the V-outfall ditch
• Lining the bottom of the V-outfall ditch with 10” VTOT Class IA rip-rap
• Constructing two big check dam structures in the proposed V-outfall ditch
• Placing backfill and re-grading the area along the edges of the rip-rap to tie into existing grade
• Placing jute mesh at the area along the rip-rap to stabilize slopes and promote vegetation
• Restoring the disturbed areas with seed mix and straw mulch
