The Lorton Road Improvement Project in Fairfax County, VA widened portions of Lorton Road, Furnace Road, and Workhouse Road to 4 lanes with medians, turn lanes, bike lanes, and stormwater management features. The $30 million project was completed in March 2017 and included constructing new bridges over Giles Run and the Greenway Trail. The project improved safety and traffic flow along 2.5 miles of roadway.

The Lorton Road Improvement project, funded by Fairfax County, was substantially completed on
March 31, 2017. The scope of the project included the widening of portions of Lorton Road,
(newly named) Workhouse Road and Furnace Road. The roadways were widened to 4-lanes with
a raised median, improved safety features, dedicated turn lanes, on-road bike lanes, low impact
development (LID) stormwater management, and share-use paths. Work also included
construction of new arch bridges over Giles Run and the Greenway Trail, and the installation of
8,500 feet of large diameter waterlines and 4,000 feet of sanitary sewer lines.
PROJECT FEATURES
 2.5 miles, 4-lane divided roadway with portion on new alignment
 Lorton Road widened from Ox Rd to Silverbrook Rd intersection
 Furnace Road widened from north of Hooes Rd. to Lorton Road intersection
 New sidewalks, shared use paths, and bike lanes
 New bridge over Giles Run and the Greenway Trail and three retaining walls
 1 new traffic signal and 3 upgraded signals with pedestrian signals
