Interacting with Dementia Essays
When I was 18 year old, I applied to work at an assisted living facility called, Crestwood Senior living
(currently known as Matthews of Glendale). When I first got hired, I was introduced to all the staff
and all the residents as well. After being employed there for a while I started to notice that some
resident were acting different from the first time I had met them and I did not understand why. So I
asked my coworker, why some of the residents were acting different and she explained to me that
some of the resident have dementia. Now, at that time I didn t really know what dementia was because
I had never worked in that type of field before or have taking any classes on that type of disease. So, I

One way that people who are working with the elderly community can interact with individuals with
dementia is by playing games such as memory games that can help them keep their mind s going.
According to Karen Miller, publisher of Memory Jogging Puzzles, stated that Studies have shown,
that memory games help slow down memory loss and brain deterioration. These games can range
anywhere from being low tech, or high tech. Some games that the help stimulate the mind that
individuals with dementia are cards games such as concentration. Concentration is a well known card
game that is often seen in quiz shows and in educational programs. In the basic form, cards are laid
face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is to
turn over pairs of matching cards. This game is used to exercise the brain and help recollect and
concentrate individuals with dementia. Some other games that I personally play with my residents at
work are bingo and ball toss.
Although, games are a great way to interact with elderly individuals with dementia, a second way that
people who are working with the elderly community can interact with elderly individuals with
dementia is by bring familiar objects such as a photographs and accessories to help trigger memories

Theseus Character Analysis
Characterize the figure of Theseus.
Introduced as a conqueror...greater than any other beneath the sun, Thesëus, the wise and chivalrous
lord Athens, is a merciful and noble duke (Chaucer 24). As a wise and noble leader, Thesëus, with a
heart of pity, mends the ailments of his people, as he [is] a true knight. (26).
How does Theseus treat the mourning women who ask for help against the tyrant Creon? Thesëus
mercifully agrees to to get vengeance on the tyrant Creon, who [set] his dogs to eat the women s
husbands instead of burying them. Theseus mercy did not reach so far, as he went to Thebes to fight
and slay Creon manfully, like knight, / [i]n open war (26 27).

Arcita, now released, feels as though he [is] in the worse prison, now, and more forlorn than before
because of the absence of the sight of Emily, who now can only be seen by Palamon, in prison no
longer, but in paradise.
7. What is the situation of each knight at the close of Part One? What formal question is asked at the
end of the first part of the Knight s Tale? At the end of part one, Arcita leaves for Thebes, exiled
forever from Athens and distraught over never seeing his love again, while Palamon still lies in prison,
desolate without the company of his cousin, but still able to regale at the sight of Emily. The question
Who has the worse, Arcita or Palamon? allows the mind to wonder which fate is worse? Never seeing
your beloved, but living as a freeman, or imprisoned till death, but able to see the face or your love.
8. Provide evidence for any two characteristics of a romance evident so far. Refer to the prezi. A
romance requires the telling of a true story in remote places and times. The Knight s Tale begins with
the lines Once upon a time, to retell the old events of Theseus in the ancient city of Athens (24). The
Knight s tale meets the requirement of a medieval romance in the first sentence, as it opens with a tale
of a far off land in ancient times. Idealized aristocratic conduct, another requirement a medieval
romance must meet, becomes present

In the Caribbean Sea, there are more than 700 islands, all have different sizes but have a similar

Ethnography Of Glucose
Glucose is a form of energy derived from carbohydrates. All living organisms requires energy to live
and thrive. When glucose is ingested it is transported through the circulatory system by the various
tissues and organs. This glucose will be used by the muscular and nervous system to complete day to
day task. If the body is not in need of glucose it will be stored in the form of glycogen for a later date.
The entire process starts with carbohydrates, for this paper we will be tracing the path of glucose
starting with ingestion to the planter surface of the right foot. The glucose we are ingesting starts for
example as a slice of pizza.
As the pizza enters the mouth it is broken down into smaller particles by the teeth so that digestion can

Risk And Implement Falls Prevention Measures
More Staff is Not the Solution to Decrease Patient Falls Falls in an acute care setting lead the list of
injury related deaths and deaths in the elderly. A fall is defined as any event which patients are found
on the floor (observed or unobserved) or an unplanned lowering of the patient to the floor by staff or
visitors (Kalisch, Tschannen, and Lee, 2012, p. 6). Medicare and Medicaid changes in 2008 list falls as
one of the 10 hospital acquired conditions for which hospitals will no longer be reimbursed because
falls are considered preventable conditions. Joint Commission accredited hospitals are required to

Patients being admitted to hospitals today have multiple co morbidities and are on a number of
medications making them a high risk for falls. Having an awareness of a patients diagnoses, pertinent
history and current medications is key in establishing an appropriate plan of care. Staffing shortages
can lead to omission of tasks such as a complete admission history and falls risk assessment. As
with any assignment, regardless of the amount of patients one is caring for, prioritization needs to be
utilized when completing tasks and making care decisions. Further work must be done to assist nurses
in completing necessary tasks...which may or may not mean additional staff members (Kalisch,
Tschannen Lee, 2012, p. 11). Developing strategies such as computerized reminders and checklists are
necessary to ensure complete and appropriate nursing care is delivered. (Kalisch, Tschannen Lee,
2012, p. 11) The lack of proper education on identification of falls risk and falls prevention measures
impact patient falls. Staff turnover and the use of temporary staff contribute to miscommunication or
lack of communication on processes such as fall prevention measures. Experience levels vary on any
given unit. Educational needs assessments should be routine and include temporary and new staff.

A Change In Theatre
Ever since the world was created, humans have tried to express themselves trough art. Painting,
sculpting, music, and, above everything, theatre. Even before they could speak properly , primitives
use dance and small rituals as a way of enterteinment. However, now, in the higly technology
developed world we live, every day there are more various and modern options to do in our free time
but, at the same time all changes and becomes dull too fast. This puts theatre in a really fragile position
and makes us wonder if it will become out of style or if, on the contrary, as this essay will proof, it
will still be relevant and up to date for the next generations.
According to The Telegraph, Great Britain´s theatre audiences decreased a 9 percent between 2010
and 2012, and the rates are only diminishing. This makes clear that the theatre as we know it, is being
less succesful. Nevertheless, this rates don´t look after new ways of theatre. And, as the world changes,

The Bolshevik Of The Soviet Revolution
The Bolsheviks success in the 1917 October revolution, gave them full power under the leadership of
Vladimir Lenin. Their aim after successfully overthrowing the Russian autocracy was to create a
socialist state. His[Lenin s] view was that socialism should be a society where the working people
control their own fate, a society organized to benefit the vast majority. This view was the foundation
for Lenin s efforts in socialist construction. In order to create this society they; formed a new socialist
government; introduced the first stage of communism state capitalism; issued a decree on land as
promised in their manifesto and focused on industrialising and collectivising in order to facilitate a
socialist state. However, problems which may cause failure in the creation of a socialist state include
the civil war for slowing down progress, the introduction of the NEP (a revert back to capitalism?), the
need to consolidate power and the brutal use of the red army.
The Bolshevik s first protocol was to create a socialist government. Lenin began by replacing the
government of the capitalist class with the rule of the working people. This new socialist government
was compiled of mass organizations called Soviets, councils democratically elected by workers,
peasants and soldiers. One of the key functions of the socialist government, in Lenin s view, was
guaranteeing democracy for the working people. As opposed to a capitalist government which exists

John Winthrop A Model Of Christian Charity Analysis
In 1630, Puritan leader John Winthrop delivered perhaps the most famous sermon in American history
entitled A Model of Christian Charity, in which he stressed to his fellow Puritans to adopt a sense of
unity by setting aside self interest for the sake of the community (Cohen, 2). Winthrop s idea of
putting community first has played a major role in American history, but as Winthrop probably knew
would happen, his idea of unity has always been at odds with those of self interest; as America is very
much a history of these competing forces. The forces of those willing to put aside their own interest
for unity, the common good, and for the preservation of the Union vs. those who have pursued their
own selfish ways. This paper will offer insights into how Winthrop s remarks have played out during
the first half of American history by examining certain individuals and events that have followed
along with Winthrop s idea, or those who have posed a challenge to it. Twenty three years before
Winthrop gave his sermon conflict over self interest vs. the common good was being played out in
Jamestown. Jamestown had been established in 1607 as a purely economic venture as Englishmen
traveled to the New World in pursuit of riches, following in the footsteps of the Spanish. These men
were consumed with their own self interest of finding gold and becoming rich as opposed to working
for the betterment of the colony, causing Jamestown to teeter on the edge of extinction for nearly a

High School Dropout Research
Growing Trends in High School Drop outs
One of the major concerns of education is the rate of students who are dropping out of school.
Statistically, the dropout rate has decreased from a national average of 15 percent in 1972 to 10
percent in 2003, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which rated 16 24 year olds
(Child Trend, 2003). Though, there has been signs of a decrease, drop out rates continue to be a
concern to the public because of the potential consequences and financial costs to the government. On
the academic level, many schools are incapable of handling the new faces in the education realm.
Thus, it forces many students to leave school without a diploma. The drop out rates appears to be an ...

A concern of the statistical data of high school dropouts is the disparaging number of minority
students who drop out of high school in comparison to whites and Asians. A 1993 research by John
Hopkins University flagged 2,000 high schools across the country as potential dropout factories
because 40 percent or more of their freshmen fail to make it to 12th grade on time (Viadero, 2004).
These schools are in medium and bigger size cities and have a significant black and Latino student
population. Florida is the one exception, where many of the failing students are rural white. In 2003, it
was estimated that 6 percent of whites, in comparison to 12 percent of blacks had dropped out of
school (Child Trend, 2003). The primary reason appears that these school districts have a variety of
disadvantages, such as resources and money to improve schools and programs. These schools are
located in lower socio economic communities. However, these disadvantaged students are judged on
the same achievement standards as students who live in higher economic districts with better
resources and tools. Latin Americans constitute the highest percentage of high school dropouts. 24
percent of Latin Americans dropped out of school in 2003 (Child Trends, 2003). This is a significant
number because there are just as many Latin Americans dropping out of school as whites. Yet, Latin
Americans represent slightly above 15 percent of the population. The

Throughout history, revolutions have occurred for many different reasons all around the world, in
many different ways. But, there is always a certain extent to which each revolution can be successful,
and also enlightened. The word successful is defined by Oxford Dictionary as accomplishing an aim
or purpose, and enlightened is defined as having or showing a rational, modern, and well informed
outlook. During the 18th century, a new intellectual movement that stressed reason and thought and

Before the revolution, king after king ruled over France with full power, and often did not take into
consideration the people s thoughts, beliefs, and opinions. Throughout the revolution, citizens from
the third estate began bringing attention to themselves and fighting for what they wanted, starting to
let their voices be heard. On July 14th, 1789, many suppressed french peasants intensely stormed the
Bastille, an important prison in France, and also captured, imprisoned, and killed french royalty to
show their anger against how they had been previously treated. This act forced King Louis VI to pay
attention to these threats from the lower class, and minimize power in the high society. Also, this was
one of the first key events that led to the french revolution s success, and the abolition of the
monarchy. Later, on October 4th in 1789, an important march took place, in which a great amount of
hungry, angry women marched towards Versailles demanding bread. The king and queen were once
again forced to recognize this event led by unhappy lower class parisians, and moved from Versailles
to Paris on October 6th. Both of these events led to the legitimization of the National Assembly, which
eventually caused the writing of the constitution and France becoming an official republic in 1972.

challenges. For the majority of life, it is chaotic but controlled; you deal with issues as they come, and
occasionally good things happen and give your mind a break. Obi s fortune is good for most of his

second thoughts. He ends up with serious financial problems and has to borrow money in order to pay

Personal Reflection Paper On Volunteering At Riverside...
Volunteering at COSI reminded me that children of all ages and backgrounds can get excited about
learning. I was able to make a clear, tangible difference in the lives by teaching children science
through enlightening experiments. However, because there are multiple age groups that come and visit
COSI, I never knew who was going to see to my experiment. This forced me to become more flexible
and think on my feet. It is always good to plan ahead, but excruciatingly futile because you do not
always know what is going to happen in the future. Some will be good, and some will be bad. Being
more flexible has helped me adapt better to my surroundings, face challenges more easily and most
importantly become effective with changes. At Riverside Methodist Hospital, because I worked on
floor duty and discharge, I interacted with patients and heard interesting stories from owning pet fish
to fighting in World War II. I saw their smiles and I knew that even if it was for a little while, I helped
a sick patient be happy and forget about his or her troubles. Although I connected with many patients,
I also saw a patient pass away. In a way, this exposure to death at the hospital has made me value my
friends even more. Before volunteering, I prioritized academic success, but for most patients nearing
the end, nothing is more important than having people who will miss them. This simple truth has made
me realize that it is fine to go out and enjoy a movie with friends, because while grades are important,
they will not last a lifetime. The brave individuals I encountered at the hospital, despite being on
opposite ends of life from myself, have taught me how to live. ... Show more content on

The Importance Of Naturalism In Eveline
Eveline is a short story in the genre of naturalism which means that it centres on life as it is and it
stresses the importance of the environment and heredity in shaping human destiny. It was written by
James Joyce in 1904 as part of a collection of portraits of people who lived in Dublin around 1900
titled Dubliners . The story features only two main settings Eveline s house and the port and lasts only
the span of one day. It was written by Joyce to show the monotonous lives of the people who lived in
Dublin at the time.
Joyce was openly critical of Irish parochialism and he wrote Eveline to prove his belief that Ireland
does not permit the development of individuality, as the character Eveline is presented by Joyce to be
the absolute epitome of Irish parochialism; rather than go after her ambition to leave Ireland for a
better life, Eveline s life is lead by her sense of duty. We see this when Eveline doubts her ambitions,
In her home any way she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her life about
her, The simplistic reasoning that Joyce uses conveys the absolute autonomy of Eveline s life as her
only reasons to not chase her ambition are basic requirements for most people s lives. Eveline,
unfortunately, leads the stereotypical life for a woman in Ireland around that time as her life was ruled
by her sense of duty and the men in her life rather than by her ambitions and herself. The reason Joyce
did this was so he could share the

Joseph Plumb Martin Essay
Joseph Plumb Martin was born upon the twenty first of November, in the year of 1760 (Martin 6). His
grandparents raised him on their Connecticut farm. Inspired by the Battles of Lexington and Concord
he decided to enlist into the army. He was eager to help for the patriotic cause. In June of 1776, at the
age of 15, Martin was able to enlist but didn t want to sign up for a long enlistment. Soldiers at the
time were enlisting for a year s service but he did not like that and thought it was too long a time for
him for the first trial, I wished only to take a priming before I took upon me the whole coat of paint for

He goes on to explain the living conditions he had to endure and his lack of sleep. It was utterly
impossible to lie down and to get any rest or sleep on account of the mud Martin recalls, and can say
in sincerity that I never lay down to sleep a minute in all that time (Martin 77). The fighting at Fort
Mifflin allowed Washington and his troops to withdraw to winter quarters at Valley Forge. It was too
late in the season for the British to follow them.
After arriving at Valley Forge Martin and his fellow soldiers were about to go through the famously
long cold winter that awaited them. Martin wrote, Our prospect was indeed dreary. In our miserable
condition, to go into the wild woods and build us habitations to stay (not to live) in, in such a weak,
starved and naked condition, was appalling in the highest degree (Martin 89). He talks about lying
there two nights and one day, and had not a morsel of any thing to eat all the time (Martin 90).
Martin describes the travel and the toll it took on men. I had now to travel the rest of the day, after
marching all the day and night before and fighting all the morning. I had eaten nothing since the noon
of the preceding day, nor did I eat a morsel til the forenoon of the next day, and I needed rest as much

U.S. states, and many individuals and businesses. These subjects filed against the Secretary of the
Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius and other entities. The plaintiffs
challenged the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Act of 2010. The plaintiffs

The Shoemaker s Holiday
The play The Shoemakers Holiday by Thomas Dekker Shoemaker is a hilarious and happy comedy.
The theme of the play is basically that nothing in life goes by plan and that is what makes life so
funny. If the reader could not tell by the title, the play has a little something to do with shoes; more
specifically someone who makes shoes. A shoemaker and cobbler can be interchangeable terms for
someone who makes or fixes shoes. In the play, there is someone who is disguised as a shoemaker
who comes into some pretty bad luck due to a military draft. The play does not only just deal with
shoes; it also deals with different class statuses. The play The Shoemaker s Holiday takes place when
there is a battle going on in France. One of the main characters, Rowland Lacy, falls in love with a girl
in the middle class named Rose Oatley. Rose s father does not approve of Rowland because of how
Rowland spends money and is very wasteful with his money, so in order to be able to get Lacy s father

The Vampires Are Now A Metaphor Of Human Beings
As one of the most attractive and enduring figures in the Gothic literature, the vampires have moved
from being a peripheral element with the genre to a place near the center and are capable of generating
its own massive tradition now. In the recent literary history, they have already been adapted to play a
role of a rebel against the moral, social, religious, and even sexual taboos. Put simply, the vampires
are now a metaphor of human beings in the modern society and life.
With the publication and popularity of The Vampire Chronicles, especially that of Interview with the
Vampire, Anne Rice innovates the Gothic tradition in the western literature successfully, for
comparatively speaking, the vampires in her novels are more sympathetic and humanized than the
terrible and emotionless monsters before. As it is said by both Jan Gordon and Veronica Hollinger, the
vampires also stand for some border anxieties, since they penetrate boundaries by their own special
and complicated nature, that is to say, between life and death, between love and fear, between power
and persecution. Furthermore, sensitive to the social issues very much, Anne Rice expresses the
sentimental feelings of the vampires in great detail and by exquisite words and describes vividly the
existing state of the outsiders of the modern times as well. Therefore, in the case of Interview with the
Vampire, there is a quite highly rational and philosophical probe into the life and the existence of
human beings.

Dying for Love in Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Based on part of the XVIII century, when the prevalent times of the Spanish Inquisition dominated the
powers of the society and the people was ruled by an orthodox way of thinking, Gabriel Garcia
Marquez gives birth to Of Love and Other Demons . According to The American Heritage Dictionary,
Inquisition was a former Roman Catholic tribunal established to suppress heresy. The term Heresy
originally meant a belief that one arrived at by oneself (Greek hairesis, choosing for oneself ), and it is
any religious doctrine opposed to the dogma of a particular church, especially a doctrine held by a
person professing faith in the teachings of that church. Surrounded by ... Show more content on

African slaves in the courtyard of her father s mansion raised Sierva Maria, a white girl with the roots
of a high status society position. Completely different cultures were inculcated to her. She worshiped
African gods, spoke Yoruban and African languages and though radically different to his parents. With
a bell in her wrist, Sierva Maria used to remind the hate and fright that Bernarda had for her. She was
so distant to where her virtual real home was that she even put herself a new name: Maria Mandinga,
giving meaning to the darkness of soul found sometime in Sierva Maria.
The Marquis, Don Ygnacio de Alfaro y Duenas, spent most of his life as a non living human, a useless
virgin that did not show any signs of life until he met Olalla de Mendoza. He could have had whatever
he wanted and be anything he would ve wanted to, since his father had the power to do it. He was
interested in nothing, not even in his daughter, even though she was the result of an abrupt strategy of
Bernarda s father to engage him for life. Moreover, Bernarda did not care about anything either. She
found her path through other ways of life and her daughter and husband were total unknown persons
to her. Judas Iscariote meant a lot in her life. He also represents the betrayal to the closest people that
were in Bernarda s life.

Use Of Language And Communication Usage
Language has affected us throughout decades by progressing and setting limits on the words used and
the way people speak. It has allowed people to express themselves through not only actions, but with
words. Also, as people grow and develop they learn new concepts referring to language and
communication usage. For example, they learn ways to write more sophisticated, the effect of words,
and the purpose of language. When understanding a new concept on language or communication
usage important considerations need to be made the modern English student.
Connotation of words is an important consideration because of the feeling the word may create and
the idea of verbal taboo. When people use words such as crippled or queer a feeling of uneasiness or
shock arose because those those words aren t socially acceptable to describe people in those situations.
This is because the words are generally perceived as rude or disrespectful. Instead, people use words
like disabled or part of the LGBT community because they are neutral and aren t disrespectful. For
example, in the article On Being a Cripple Nancy Mairs says, People crippled or not wince at the word
cripple as they do not at handicapped or disabled I want them to see me as a tough customer...
Disabled by contrast, suggests and incapacity, physical or mental... I would never refer to another
person as a cripple (Mairs 233). When people use the world cripple they wince because of the negative

The Problem Of Pop Culture
What pops into your mind first when you think of popular culture in today s day and age? The latest
dirt on celebrities or the latest iPhone release? The latest controversial issue or the latest iTunes hit?
Regardless, pop culture encompasses all four of these concepts and many more, which consume the
world we live in each and every day. Think about education. At first thought, your mind may not make
the connection between the newest Taylor Swift song and the highest ACT score, but the linkage
between the two becomes undeniable when you dive deeper. Ponder this: each day millions of kids
walk into school buildings across the United States, each of them glued to a little slice of pop culture,
a.k.a. their phone. And each day these millions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pop culture butts in here, for it idolizes the elite. Pop culture tells those who take either of these
college admission tests that those who score higher are better, and that is a detrimental effect on one s
self esteem.
Let s now focus specifically on what these dreaded tests value: rapid cognition. Malcolm Gladwell
points out something many people don t realize, Snap judgements and rapid cognition take place
behind a locked door (Blink 51). In other words, Gladwell says you don t know why your body tells
you to do something or not to do something because those decisions are made behind a locked door.
The ACT and SAT force their contenders to make numerous, rapid decisions because of their time
constraint, which increases the amount of silly mistakes students could avoid if the tests allotted more
time. Further, what the tests value frustrates many students because they deny the importance of
practical intelligence, something psychologist Robert Sternberg defines as the particular skill that
allows you to talk your way out of a murder rap, or convince your professor to move you from the
morning to the afternoon section (Gladwell Outliers 101). Tying this into the pop culture aspect, how
do you think unknown people suddenly become celebrities? Although most attain popularity from
sheer talent, lots of them possess this practical intelligence,

Sociocultural Theory And Second Language Learning
Sociocultural Theory and Second Language Learning
Language is the most pervasive and powerful cultural artefact that humans possess to mediate their
connection to the world, to each other, and to themselves [Lantolf Thorne 2006:201]. The idea of
mediation inherent in this notion of the language is a fundamental element of Sociocultural Theory
[SCT], one of the most influential approach to learning and mental development since 1990s , drawing
on its origin from the work of soviet psychologist and semiotist Lev Vygotsky and many others.
In this essay, I am going to describe major principles of SCT and its central constructs [particularly
Semiotic Mediation, The Zone of Proximal Development] and I am going to provide some examples
of related research that have been framed in these concepts.
1.SEMIOTIC MEDIATION
The concept of semiotic mediation focuses on understanding of the ways in which signs carry,
mediate, and constitute sociocultural meaning. According to Lantolf [2014], this sign based process
arises from interactions that occur in the social relationship culturally organized at both a macro level
[institutional arrangements] and micro level [e.g. conversation]. In this part, I will outline main
principles of the Vygotsky s theory of linguistic mediation [based on the definition of language as a
mean of mediation] and Whorf s theory [based on definition of the language is as a shaper of ideas].
1.1 The Linguistics Mediation of Psychological Processes

Single Gender Schools
Many people believe that single gender schools have no positive effect on students, research shows
otherwise. In single gender schools there is less drama, it helps preserve culture, there are less
stereotypes, and test scores and confidence levels rise. Single gender schools have many positive
impacts, and they help students prepare for the future.
For starters there is less drama at an all girls school. Since there aren t any guys on campus, you aren t
gonna be jealous of a couple at school. Another reason there is less drama is that you aren t vying for
the guys attention. This also leads to more modesty. Loran Wilbur , who went to an all girls school
said, There was a lot less pressure for appearance at Wellesley. Girls usually just wore sweat pants and
a t shirt. Lastly you don t have to worry about how a guys gonna treat you because of how you look. A
lot of drama is based on relationships and attractions. Remove the opposite gender from the equation
and you have lessened the problem drastically.
Next off single gender schools help preserve many different cultures. In the Islamic or Muslim culture
the co ed schools are promoting illicit relationships, teenage pregnancies, dating, girlfriend boyfriend

Disadvantages Of Travel And Tourism
The Travel and Tourism economy is one of the fastest growing activities in most countries around the
world [1]. For many developing countries it is one of the main sources of foreign exchange income
and the number one export category, creating such needed employment and opportunities for
development [2]. According to World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTO), the Travel and Tourism
industry have generated US$7.6 trillion (10% of global GDP (Gross Domestic Product)) and 277
million jobs (1 in 11 jobs) for the global economy in 2014. In Malaysia, for 2014 alone, a total of
RM72.0 billion receipts and 27.22 million arrivals were registered [3].
However, the Travel and Tourism industry has not only some benefits and also drawbacks. Tourism
can cause its share of problems such as social dislocation, loss of cultural heritage, ecological
degradation, pollution and noise. For instance, much of the corals on Pulau Payar Marine Park,
Langkawi, Malaysia were damaged due to mass arrival of tourists as the travel operators has allowed
600 to 700 tourists on the island at a time [4]. One hand, there is a push to bring in tourists dollars but

Zinc Ores During The World After Iron, Aluminum, And Copper
Introduction
Zinc is currently the fourth most widely consumed metal in the world after iron, aluminum, and
copper. In nature, zinc ores could be divided into sulphide minerals and oxide minerals. Zinc is
extracted mostly from zinc sulfide ores. With depletion of global resources of zinc sulfides as well as
the restriction on sulfur emissions during their processing, there is an increasing focus on the
processing of the huge reserves of zinc oxide ores (Li et al., 2010).
Thomas and Fray (1981) studied leaching of oxide zinc materials with chlorine and chlorine hydrate.
They found that the rate of leaching of the Adrar Turkish ore could be described using a shrinking core
diffusion model, and that the rate of leaching was controlled by surface reaction. In all cases studied,
lead was also leached with zinc. However, iron oxides remained virtually undissolved. Frenay (1985)
investigated leaching of oxidized zinc ores in various solution media and obtained the best leaching
results with sulfuric acid and caustic soda. Mineralogical studies showed that smithsonite can be
completely leached but hemimorphite is relatively refractory to leaching. Abdel Aal (2000) studied the
kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of low grade zinc silicate ore and reported that about 94% of zinc can
be leached after 180 min of reaction with 10% sulfuric acid at 70°C. Espiari et al., 2006 studied
hydrometallurgical treatment of tailings with high zinc content using sulfuric acid and reported that

The Ballad Of Birmingham, By Duley Randall
Many poems deal with the harsh realities of the death of a loved one and how those affected begin to
heal as they work through the process of grieving. The Ballad of Birmingham, Eating Alone and
Eating Together all portray individuals dealing with a devastating loss in their life, and the authors use
their personal life experiences and views, incorporating them their writings. In The Ballad of
Birmingham the author, Duley Randall, works to convey a tragic scene of loss. The event that Randall
is referring to is the September 15th, 1963 bombing, in Birmingham Alabama, of a predominantly
African American church. This bombing resulted in the deaths of four young girls; Denise McNair,
Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins, and Cynthia Wesley, and also many others were injured. This
hate crime was committed by four members of the Ku Klux Klan as an act of terrorism against the
Afro American people. Duley Randall was one of the first African American writers and poets.
Randall was born in 1914 and had personally experienced much racism first hand throughout his life.
Because of this Randall had a personal connection to the same prejudice felt by the black community
and could relate to the people of Birmingham. Actually, the bombings in Birmingham impacted him
and the nation deeply and were a major reason why Randall chose to begin writing about the events of
the time. He focused on the events that were related to the racial injustices endured by the people.

Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca, Italy on December 22nd, 1858. He was one of nine children of
Michele Puccini and Albina Magi. The Puccini family was established in Lucca as a local musical
dynasty by Puccini s great great grandfather. Each of the men in the family studied music at Bologna,
and some went on to take additional musical studies courses elsewhere in Italy. Most of them
composed music for the church, Cattedrale di San Martino. With the Puccini family having occupied

made his final revisions to the opera in a fifth version, which has become known as the Standard

Like Puccini s other operas, this one tells the story of a tragic heroic female protagonist. A young

American Naval Officer, Pinkerton. The two are married but her husband must depart soon after the

to American, and Butterfly accepts his decision with dignity. But rather than return to her life as a

Persia And Greeks Compare And Contrast
Greece, which lasted from 480 BCE to 323 BCE and Persia, which stood standing from 550 BCE to
330 BCE, were two empires that flourished for centuries. Although they both had victorious moments
throughout their existence, they were constantly in battle with each other. These wars lasted for
hundreds of years. The casualties were plentiful but these fights often helped their cultures spread
throughout the lands. Even though Greece and Persia had contrasting religious beliefs and social
rankings, they both thought the powerful tasks belonged to the men, not women. The Greeks and
Persians had different religious views. The Greeks were polytheistic, as they believed in more than

Greeks would use this chance to communicate with the gods to prepare for the future. On the other

Are Common Core Standards Positively Affect Student Test...
Literature Review: Positivity of Common Core Standards
A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes the
information in a particular subject area within a certain time frame (The Writing Center, 2014). A
literature review will almost always have an organized pattern and will combine both summary and
synthesis (The Writing Center, 2014). Why are literature reviews written? The answer is
straightforward; they provide a handy guide to a particular topic (The Writing Center, 2014).
According The Writing Center at The University of North Carolina of Chapel Hill (2014) sometimes a
researcher will not have time to conduct a predominant search of a topic; this makes literature reviews
relevant because they give an overview or act as a stepping stone. This essay will provide a literature
review for the research question: Do Common Core standards positively affect student test scores?
Uncertainties in the Research Many uncertainties arise when doing research; it is important to read
various articles and look for gaps or ambiguities so see what needs to be focused on. For example,
reading through four to five articles about the positivity Common Core has on student test scores did
not provide a great deal of information about the positivity theses standards have on scores. The
articles provide information describing what Common Core does who and what it affects, as well as
more negativity than positivity. The articles also provide

Creating Space
Creating Space: Resolving the Problem of National Identity in English Canadian Literary History
1867 1967
Abstract: In 1967, Canada celebrated her centennial as a country unified outwardly, but inwardly
divided. Within Canadian letters both French and English Canadian literary historians had spent a
hundred years unsuccessfully attempting to create a unified narrative to explain the shared story of
their origins. This paper will focus primarily on English Canadian literary histories, and the part they
played in resolving the problem of creating the nation of Canada. I will argue that it took a full century
to solve the problem , and was achieved by Northrup Frye s when he moving English Canadian
literature outside the realm of socio politics and entirely into the mythopoeic sphere. However, this
conclusion , relied on a modernist understanding of the role of meta narratives in the shared story of
nationhood, without which assumption, such a conclusion risks becoming little more than a rhetorical
contortion. I will conclude by suggesting that it was only when Canadian letters moved beyond
centralized meta narratives, and started to embrace (in Robert Kroetsch s words) Disunity in Unity
that a true Canadian literature and a more balanced literary history could begin emerge.

Smiling flirtatiously, she said, I know who you are. I had been friends with your sister Mary for many
years. We never got the chance to meet officially, but I had seen you and talked to you over the phone
on several occasions, if I remember correctly. If you do not know this already, I am Isabel s closest
and dearest friend. It is so nice to meet you finally. I am so sorry for what I said earlier. I had no idea
Isabel was seen someone. Isabel and I had not seen each other for almost a month.
Turning to me, he responded through gritted teeth, I guess Isabel failed to mention me to her dearest
friends.
Walking into the kitchen with Liz basket in hand, I placed it on the kitchen counter and began to
review its content. While looking at the basket, I uttered, Liz, Brian was just leaving.
Walking toward me, he placed his arm around my waist and kissed me on my temple as he turned to
Liz. I had no idea Isabel s confidant was coming over for dinner. I hope you do not mind me joining
you. I want to get to know my girl s best friend. After all, we are going to be seen a lot of each other.
Aren t we, Isabel?
Putting some space between us, I muttered through gritting teeth. We were hoping to have a girls night
in.
Mockingly, he replied, This meeting must have been scheduled last minutes. We were just in DC, and
if I remember correctly, we were having dinner with friends tonight. Irritated, I gazed at Liz who was
staring at Brian with a captivated

  • 9. The Bolshevik Of The Soviet Revolution The Bolsheviks success in the 1917 October revolution, gave them full power under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. Their aim after successfully overthrowing the Russian autocracy was to create a socialist state. His[Lenin s] view was that socialism should be a society where the working people control their own fate, a society organized to benefit the vast majority. This view was the foundation for Lenin s efforts in socialist construction. In order to create this society they; formed a new socialist government; introduced the first stage of communism state capitalism; issued a decree on land as promised in their manifesto and focused on industrialising and collectivising in order to facilitate a socialist state. However, problems which may cause failure in the creation of a socialist state include the civil war for slowing down progress, the introduction of the NEP (a revert back to capitalism?), the need to consolidate power and the brutal use of the red army. The Bolshevik s first protocol was to create a socialist government. Lenin began by replacing the government of the capitalist class with the rule of the working people. This new socialist government was compiled of mass organizations called Soviets, councils democratically elected by workers, peasants and soldiers. One of the key functions of the socialist government, in Lenin s view, was guaranteeing democracy for the working people. As opposed to a capitalist government which exists to ensure the ... • 10. John Winthrop A Model Of Christian Charity Analysis In 1630, Puritan leader John Winthrop delivered perhaps the most famous sermon in American history entitled A Model of Christian Charity, in which he stressed to his fellow Puritans to adopt a sense of unity by setting aside self interest for the sake of the community (Cohen, 2). Winthrop s idea of putting community first has played a major role in American history, but as Winthrop probably knew would happen, his idea of unity has always been at odds with those of self interest; as America is very much a history of these competing forces. The forces of those willing to put aside their own interest for unity, the common good, and for the preservation of the Union vs. those who have pursued their own selfish ways. This paper will offer insights into how Winthrop s remarks have played out during the first half of American history by examining certain individuals and events that have followed along with Winthrop s idea, or those who have posed a challenge to it. Twenty three years before Winthrop gave his sermon conflict over self interest vs. the common good was being played out in Jamestown. Jamestown had been established in 1607 as a purely economic venture as Englishmen traveled to the New World in pursuit of riches, following in the footsteps of the Spanish. These men were consumed with their own self interest of finding gold and becoming rich as opposed to working for the betterment of the colony, causing Jamestown to teeter on the edge of extinction for nearly a ... • 11. High School Dropout Research Growing Trends in High School Drop outs One of the major concerns of education is the rate of students who are dropping out of school. Statistically, the dropout rate has decreased from a national average of 15 percent in 1972 to 10 percent in 2003, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which rated 16 24 year olds (Child Trend, 2003). Though, there has been signs of a decrease, drop out rates continue to be a concern to the public because of the potential consequences and financial costs to the government. On the academic level, many schools are incapable of handling the new faces in the education realm. Thus, it forces many students to leave school without a diploma. The drop out rates appears to be an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A concern of the statistical data of high school dropouts is the disparaging number of minority students who drop out of high school in comparison to whites and Asians. A 1993 research by John Hopkins University flagged 2,000 high schools across the country as potential dropout factories because 40 percent or more of their freshmen fail to make it to 12th grade on time (Viadero, 2004). These schools are in medium and bigger size cities and have a significant black and Latino student population. Florida is the one exception, where many of the failing students are rural white. In 2003, it was estimated that 6 percent of whites, in comparison to 12 percent of blacks had dropped out of school (Child Trend, 2003). The primary reason appears that these school districts have a variety of disadvantages, such as resources and money to improve schools and programs. These schools are located in lower socio economic communities. However, these disadvantaged students are judged on the same achievement standards as students who live in higher economic districts with better resources and tools. Latin Americans constitute the highest percentage of high school dropouts. 24 percent of Latin Americans dropped out of school in 2003 (Child Trends, 2003). The word successful is defined by Oxford Dictionary as accomplishing an aim or purpose, and enlightened is defined as having or showing a rational, modern, and well informed outlook. Before the revolution, king after king ruled over France with full power, and often did not take into consideration the people s thoughts, beliefs, and opinions. Throughout the revolution, citizens from the third estate began bringing attention to themselves and fighting for what they wanted, starting to let their voices be heard. On July 14th, 1789, many suppressed french peasants intensely stormed the Bastille, an important prison in France, and also captured, imprisoned, and killed french royalty to show their anger against how they had been previously treated. This act forced King Louis VI to pay attention to these threats from the lower class, and minimize power in the high society. Also, this was one of the first key events that led to the french revolution s success, and the abolition of the monarchy. Later, on October 4th in 1789, an important march took place, in which a great amount of hungry, angry women marched towards Versailles demanding bread. The king and queen were once again forced to recognize this event led by unhappy lower class parisians, and moved from Versailles to Paris on October 6th. Both of these events led to the legitimization of the National Assembly, which eventually caused the writing of the constitution and France becoming an official republic in 1972. • 14. Personal Reflection Paper On Volunteering At Riverside... Volunteering at COSI reminded me that children of all ages and backgrounds can get excited about learning. I was able to make a clear, tangible difference in the lives by teaching children science through enlightening experiments. However, because there are multiple age groups that come and visit COSI, I never knew who was going to see to my experiment. This forced me to become more flexible and think on my feet. It is always good to plan ahead, but excruciatingly futile because you do not always know what is going to happen in the future. Some will be good, and some will be bad. Being more flexible has helped me adapt better to my surroundings, face challenges more easily and most importantly become effective with changes. At Riverside Methodist Hospital, because I worked on floor duty and discharge, I interacted with patients and heard interesting stories from owning pet fish to fighting in World War II. I saw their smiles and I knew that even if it was for a little while, I helped a sick patient be happy and forget about his or her troubles. Although I connected with many patients, I also saw a patient pass away. In a way, this exposure to death at the hospital has made me value my friends even more. Before volunteering, I prioritized academic success, but for most patients nearing the end, nothing is more important than having people who will miss them. This simple truth has made me realize that it is fine to go out and enjoy a movie with friends, because while grades are important, they will not last a lifetime. • 15. The Importance Of Naturalism In Eveline Eveline is a short story in the genre of naturalism which means that it centres on life as it is and it stresses the importance of the environment and heredity in shaping human destiny. It was written by James Joyce in 1904 as part of a collection of portraits of people who lived in Dublin around 1900 titled Dubliners . The story features only two main settings Eveline s house and the port and lasts only the span of one day. It was written by Joyce to show the monotonous lives of the people who lived in Dublin at the time. Joyce was openly critical of Irish parochialism and he wrote Eveline to prove his belief that Ireland does not permit the development of individuality, as the character Eveline is presented by Joyce to be the absolute epitome of Irish parochialism; rather than go after her ambition to leave Ireland for a better life, Eveline s life is lead by her sense of duty. We see this when Eveline doubts her ambitions, In her home any way she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her life about her, The simplistic reasoning that Joyce uses conveys the absolute autonomy of Eveline s life as her only reasons to not chase her ambition are basic requirements for most people s lives. Eveline, unfortunately, leads the stereotypical life for a woman in Ireland around that time as her life was ruled by her sense of duty and the men in her life rather than by her ambitions and herself. The fighting at Fort Mifflin allowed Washington and his troops to withdraw to winter quarters at Valley Forge. It was too late in the season for the British to follow them. After arriving at Valley Forge Martin and his fellow soldiers were about to go through the famously long cold winter that awaited them. Martin wrote, Our prospect was indeed dreary. In our miserable condition, to go into the wild woods and build us habitations to stay (not to live) in, in such a weak, starved and naked condition, was appalling in the highest degree (Martin 89). He talks about lying there two nights and one day, and had not a morsel of any thing to eat all the time (Martin 90). Martin describes the travel and the toll it took on men. I had now to travel the rest of the day, after marching all the day and night before and fighting all the morning. I had eaten nothing since the noon of the preceding day, nor did I eat a morsel til the forenoon of the next day, and I needed rest as much as victuals. • 20. The Vampires Are Now A Metaphor Of Human Beings As one of the most attractive and enduring figures in the Gothic literature, the vampires have moved from being a peripheral element with the genre to a place near the center and are capable of generating its own massive tradition now. In the recent literary history, they have already been adapted to play a role of a rebel against the moral, social, religious, and even sexual taboos. Put simply, the vampires are now a metaphor of human beings in the modern society and life. With the publication and popularity of The Vampire Chronicles, especially that of Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice innovates the Gothic tradition in the western literature successfully, for comparatively speaking, the vampires in her novels are more sympathetic and humanized than the terrible and emotionless monsters before. As it is said by both Jan Gordon and Veronica Hollinger, the vampires also stand for some border anxieties, since they penetrate boundaries by their own special and complicated nature, that is to say, between life and death, between love and fear, between power and persecution. Furthermore, sensitive to the social issues very much, Anne Rice expresses the sentimental feelings of the vampires in great detail and by exquisite words and describes vividly the existing state of the outsiders of the modern times as well. Therefore, in the case of Interview with the Vampire, there is a quite highly rational and philosophical probe into the life and the existence of human beings. From ... Sociocultural Theory And Second Language Learning Sociocultural Theory and Second Language Learning Language is the most pervasive and powerful cultural artefact that humans possess to mediate their connection to the world, to each other, and to themselves [Lantolf Thorne 2006:201]. The idea of mediation inherent in this notion of the language is a fundamental element of Sociocultural Theory [SCT], one of the most influential approach to learning and mental development since 1990s , drawing on its origin from the work of soviet psychologist and semiotist Lev Vygotsky and many others. In nature, zinc ores could be divided into sulphide minerals and oxide minerals. Zinc is extracted mostly from zinc sulfide ores. With depletion of global resources of zinc sulfides as well as the restriction on sulfur emissions during their processing, there is an increasing focus on the processing of the huge reserves of zinc oxide ores (Li et al., 2010). Thomas and Fray (1981) studied leaching of oxide zinc materials with chlorine and chlorine hydrate. They found that the rate of leaching of the Adrar Turkish ore could be described using a shrinking core diffusion model, and that the rate of leaching was controlled by surface reaction. In all cases studied, lead was also leached with zinc. However, iron oxides remained virtually undissolved. Frenay (1985) investigated leaching of oxidized zinc ores in various solution media and obtained the best leaching results with sulfuric acid and caustic soda. Mineralogical studies showed that smithsonite can be completely leached but hemimorphite is relatively refractory to leaching. Abdel Aal (2000) studied the kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of low grade zinc silicate ore and reported that about 94% of zinc can be leached after 180 min of reaction with 10% sulfuric acid at 70°C. Espiari et al., 2006 studied hydrometallurgical treatment of tailings with high zinc content using sulfuric acid and reported that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Ballad Of Birmingham, By Duley Randall Many poems deal with the harsh realities of the death of a loved one and how those affected begin to heal as they work through the process of grieving. The Ballad of Birmingham, Eating Alone and Eating Together all portray individuals dealing with a devastating loss in their life, and the authors use their personal life experiences and views, incorporating them their writings. In The Ballad of Birmingham the author, Duley Randall, works to convey a tragic scene of loss. The event that Randall is referring to is the September 15th, 1963 bombing, in Birmingham Alabama, of a predominantly African American church. This bombing resulted in the deaths of four young girls; Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins, and Cynthia Wesley, and also many others were injured. This hate crime was committed by four members of the Ku Klux Klan as an act of terrorism against the Afro American people. Duley Randall was one of the first African American writers and poets. Randall was born in 1914 and had personally experienced much racism first hand throughout his life. Because of this Randall had a personal connection to the same prejudice felt by the black community and could relate to the people of Birmingham. Actually, the bombings in Birmingham impacted him and the nation deeply and were a major reason why Randall chose to begin writing about the events of the time. He focused on the events that were related to the racial injustices endured by the people. Many feel his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Persia And Greeks Compare And Contrast Greece, which lasted from 480 BCE to 323 BCE and Persia, which stood standing from 550 BCE to 330 BCE, were two empires that flourished for centuries. Although they both had victorious moments throughout their existence, they were constantly in battle with each other. These wars lasted for hundreds of years. The casualties were plentiful but these fights often helped their cultures spread throughout the lands. Even though Greece and Persia had contrasting religious beliefs and social rankings, they both thought the powerful tasks belonged to the men, not women. The Greeks and Persians had different religious views. The Greeks were polytheistic, as they believed in more than one god; the Persians were monotheistic and followed Zoroastrianism. The Greeks ... Lastly, when the Greeks wanted advice or to know information about the future, they would visit oracle soracles; holy places where humans could interact with the gods. The most popular oracle was that of Apollo in Delphi. People would bring presents to Apollo and he would answer their questions through a separate female, the Pythia. The Greeks would use this chance to communicate with the gods to prepare for the future. On the other hand, the Persians followed a single god, Ahuramazda the god of Zoroastrianism. The specific birthplace of this religion is a bit unclear; but since the founder, Zoroaster, was from the eastern part of Iran, we can guess that this is where it all started. Zoroaster believed that Ahuramazda, also known as the wise lord , made the world we all know. But this god was intimidated by Angra Mainyu, the hostile spirit and his fellow demons. • 39. Are Common Core Standards Positively Affect Student Test... Literature Review: Positivity of Common Core Standards A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes the information in a particular subject area within a certain time frame (The Writing Center, 2014). A literature review will almost always have an organized pattern and will combine both summary and synthesis (The Writing Center, 2014). Why are literature reviews written? The answer is straightforward; they provide a handy guide to a particular topic (The Writing Center, 2014). According The Writing Center at The University of North Carolina of Chapel Hill (2014) sometimes a researcher will not have time to conduct a predominant search of a topic; this makes literature reviews relevant because they give an overview or act as a stepping stone. This essay will provide a literature review for the research question: Do Common Core standards positively affect student test scores? Uncertainties in the Research Many uncertainties arise when doing research; it is important to read various articles and look for gaps or ambiguities so see what needs to be focused on. For example, reading through four to five articles about the positivity Common Core has on student test scores did not provide a great deal of information about the positivity theses standards have on scores. The articles provide information describing what Common Core does who and what it affects, as well as more negativity than positivity. The articles also provide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Creating Space Creating Space: Resolving the Problem of National Identity in English Canadian Literary History 1867 1967 Abstract: In 1967, Canada celebrated her centennial as a country unified outwardly, but inwardly divided. Within Canadian letters both French and English Canadian literary historians had spent a hundred years unsuccessfully attempting to create a unified narrative to explain the shared story of their origins. This paper will focus primarily on English Canadian literary histories, and the part they played in resolving the problem of creating the nation of Canada. I will argue that it took a full century to solve the problem , and was achieved by Northrup Frye s when he moving English Canadian literature outside the realm of socio politics and entirely into the mythopoeic sphere. However, this conclusion , relied on a modernist understanding of the role of meta narratives in the shared story of nationhood, without which assumption, such a conclusion risks becoming little more than a rhetorical contortion. I will conclude by suggesting that it was only when Canadian letters moved beyond centralized meta narratives, and started to embrace (in Robert Kroetsch s words) Disunity in Unity that a true Canadian literature and a more balanced literary history could begin emerge.
