NAPHTHYLAMINE
 Naphthylamine is an aromatic
amine derived from Naphthalene.
 It can cause bladder cancer
(transitional cell carcinoma).
 It crystallizes in colorless needles
which melt at 50°C.
 It possesses a disagreeable odor,
sublimes readily, and turns brown
on exposure to air.
 It is the precursor to a variety of
dyes.
Properties of Naphthylamine
Chemical Formula C10H9N
Molar Mass 143.19 g/mol
Appearance Colorless crystals (reddish purple in Air)
Melting Point 47 to 50°C
Boiling Point 301°C
Preparation :-
1. Bucherer’s Process
β-Naphthylamine is prepared by treating β-napthol
with aqueous ammonia and Ammonium Sulphate.
2. α-Naphthylamine is prepared by reducing α-
Nitrophthalene with Iron and Hydrochloric acid.
3. Naphthelene is treated with concentrated Nitric
Acid and concentrated Sulphuric Acid to give 1-
Nitrophthalene , then further react with Zn/HCl
togive Naphthylamine
Uses of Naphthylamine
1. The sulfonic acid derivative of 1-
naphthylamine are used for the preparation of
azo dye.
2. It is used as an Anti-oxidant in Rubber
industies
3. It is used in preperation of Aptiganel
