AYURVEDA
 Traditional system of medicine plays an important role in primary health care needs.
 Ayurvedic system of medicine is the oldest medical system.
 Ayurveda word means" science of life", developed between 1500 and 500 8. C. in India.
 The Indian hindu mythology -states four vedas written by the Aryans which forms the back -bane of Indian civilization.
 The four vedas are:- Rigvedas, samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvanaveda.
 Basic principles of Ayurveda Panchamaba Bhutas:Universe is made up of five basic elements also known as Panchama bhutas:
1) Akasha (space)
2) Vayu (Air)
3) Jeja or Agni (Fire)
4) jalal (water)
5) Prithvi (Earth)
Trigunas: salva, Rajal and Tamal are three essential components of Mind
 Tridoshas:Vata(fAixi), Pitta (Bile), Rapha (Phlegm).
Saptha dhatus:Saptha (seven), dhatu (tissues) elments for the pillars of
body.
 There are the means of nourishment and growth and also provide support
to the body as well as mind.
Trimalasmalas (faeces, wrine, sweat) are various waste products of food and
dhatus produced during the normal digestive and metabolic process.
Trayadosa Agent (Agni) Biological for that control metabolism.
Ayni balances all the changes in the body and mind like digestion and
absorption of food, collulay transformations, assimilation of sensory
perception and mental, emotional experience.four types, hoved
• Ayurvedic formulations on their physical natures of dosage form
1) solid dosage form : eq: vati, Chutika
2) Semi-solid dosage form, co Icha, talka
3) liquid dosage form, eq- Anital, Asavas Powder dosage form, eq Bhaimas,

Lehya
• Lehya is one of forms of ayurvedic medicine having semi- solid consistency.
• It is prepared from herbs by addition of gur (jaggery), sharkar (sugay or sugar
candy) and boiled with prescribed swarsa(drug juice) or kwath/ kashayam
(dicoction).
• Also known as aveleha on liha., jam, paste like product
Method of preparation of lehya
• In preparation of lehya ingredients present are
1) Kashaya (decoctions, etter liquids)
2) gur/guda/ sharkara (jaggery,sugar or sugar candy )
3) churna(powder or pulps of certain drugs)
4) ghrita (ghee or tailam oil)E.) madhu (honey)
First step : Gur/guda is dissolved well in decoction or liquid and strained to remove the
foreign particle. This solution is then boiled over amoderate Fire.
Second step: when the Pak (Phanita) is tantuvat (theead like) when pressed between thumb
and index finger or when it sinks down in a glass of water without getting eavily dissolved, it
should be removed from the fire. churna (fine powder) of herbs are thin added In small
quantities and stirred continuously and vigorously form a homogenous mixture.
Final step
• Ghrita (ahee) or Tailal oil), if mentioned is added while the prespavation is somewhat hot and
mixed well. Madhu(Honey), if mentioned is added at the last when the mixture of preparation
gets cool and mixed well.
 Different parameters of standarization of lehya are
Organoleptic parameters
1) color of Sample
2) odour of sample
3) Taste of Sample
4) Determination of pH of sample.
Physical parameter
1) Total ash value
2) Acid insoluble Ash
3) water soluble ain and sulphated ash
4) loss on drying
5) specific gravity
6) solid content
7) Alcohol content
8) TLC-Ep technique.
