And many more career options
The way to get ahead and stay ahead is through technology and knowledge. Students are exceptionally drawn to mobile devices that allow them to share information with one another constantly. Why not leverage this interest and skill, and channel towards improving their career?TwitterTwitter is one of the fastest ways to learn and share information. Almost every major company, executive and celebrity uses this as a mode of communicating thoughts in real time. Savvy students should follow their favorite companies, CEO’s, etc to understand what is happening in that particular industry. For example, we have several including @MarriottIntl @MarriottResorts. NAF has (@NAFCareerAcads.Build twitter into the classroom by asking students the latest news in wallstreet or from a Fortune 500 firm, using only Twitter. Build professional behavior by encouraging them to share information and retweet. Retweeting activity appears on simple google searches, thus, a reputation can be built this way. Twitter is a creative way to prepare for interviews, as information is real time, and students can formulate questions, understand the future direction of a company, even before an annual report is written. The account is free. Emphasize that students should use a professional account name. FacebookWhile Facebook is used primarily for making and connecting with new/old friends, businesses have moved towards facebook as ways to advertise and promote company news. Like Twitter, Facebook is an excellent way to learn about information. Target audiences are typically the millennium generation, who are our students. Companies are moving towards using Facebook as one of the primary methods of marketing. They should also join organizational pages such as NAF. Encourage them to remove themselves from questionable fan sites, pages, etc.Students who are interested in IT, Web design, Marketing, and Branding, should be very focused on learning how companies are currently using Facebook. This type of know-how is very new for companies and they are always seeking new talent to help them stay on trend, especially when using Facebook. LinkedInSingle best method to network with someone you don’t know. Network = NetworthOnline resume that highlight’s a students strengths and skill sets. Students should being practicing contacting people outside their immediate network through LinkedIn emails, requesting for informational interviews, crafting and professional email requests. This will assist during the internship process, and as well as the corporate politics when they begin working full time. Employers use this as a recruiting tool as well. The next slide will give an example of how a high school student can craft a profile. Social Media CautionsIt is very critical to make students aware of how their online reputation will affect them for years to come. We are consistently screening candidates and even if thoughts/photos/etc are not necessarily work related, it feeds into the negative stereotype of teenagers/high school students, which our students are constantly trying to battle and overcome. Rule of thumb…if grandmother wouldn’t approve of the post/like/poke/retweet/etc., then it should not be done! It needs to be stressed nothing online is considered private, even with certain settings. Employers take activity on social media very seriously, even if “that picture was from two years ago.”
I wanted to take a moment to give you the difference between a Facebook account and a LinkedIn profile.Your students are young and have very different motivations now. Employers and universities use these as tools to screen and recruit. Ensure they are wary of that. Get them in the habit of creating a PROFESSIONAL account like LinkedIn.LinkedIn is an online resume. -Current – this reveals to potential employers the student has credibility. Others have trusted their capabilities. Our students can say something like “Student at XXX High School” or “Student Web Designer” or “NAF Graduate”. It is critical they mention student, so recruiters and potential connections know how to classify the contact. Being a student opens up more doors as potential contacts are more willing to help and speak to students. -Education- emphasize NAF, insert college if they have been admitted. -Additional Info- NAF, extra curricular, honors, accomplishments, items that they are proud ofExperience – based on their NAF program, they can highlight measurable contributions hereStudents like to be connected. This would actually be a very fun task for them tagline- build the brand! Its unique and distinguished . It separates them from every other student. LinkedIn is the perfect source to network and build on networking/connecting skills. Ensure students have a professional photo uploaded, IF they choose to put a photo. Since they are students, I recommend omitting a photo. Encourage them to share and connect with one another, and join the NAF page to meet other NAF graduates.
What I will describe here are various tools and experiences that students need to develop as a part of their toolkit for success. All of these items are things I work on and have to this day. Everything here assists in career preparedness. These need to begin from day one. Every child needs to have a mentor either in or outside of school. Ask each student to reach out to an adult they admire. Ask them why they admire them. Emphasize the importance of traits they would like to emulateConfidence – we spoke of this before, but it is critical. What does each student believe they are really good at? What skills or traits are necessary for this? Use this as a metaphor when they need to address adults or need an extra boost of confidence. How do they speak? Stand? Articulate their answers in class?Look for opportunities to shadow others or bring in professionals to discuss a topic. In many cases, even college students who were alums should come and discuss something they are learning to give them exposure. Hands on experience is ideal. Build a community where older students assist younger students in the NAF program. Have them participate in round table discussions, create an Alumni Day inviting students back from all graduating classes. Create simulated networking events, so students become comfortable walking into a room full of strangers and being able to tell them about themselves.Resume clinics need to be part of your agenda and curriculum. Seek out local business partners to do this. Test questions on WSJ. Why its important. Open the classroom discussion with a few minutes of what is happening around the world, through the eyes of WSJ and Financial Times. Teach how to ask or develop informational interviews. This goes back to having a mentor who can be their first interviewer. Students get so many advantages of getting advice from the top and they can craft their behavior accordinglyWork with your school and local community businesses to allow fieldtrips just to give students exposure of what else is out there.Make them get a professional email address!! Create several workshops and partner with your English department to help teach professional writing. What is professional business attire? You can use older students to teach younger students. Make a day of this type of learning. Simulate a conferenceParents want to be involved in their child’s success especially if they believe in the program. Just have to ask (ask for class demos, resume workshops, site visit, etc). NOT money Peer to peer = students learn best from one another.Continuously work on interview prep…several times a semester. Video tape!Along with resume review, what are typical things students do in high school (ASK FOR SUGGESTIONS) = make these into skillsWriting down goals, increases chance of success. What are measurable goals? Generate a form of discussion around this. Every action should be related to their long term goal.
Students can then take their tool belt and start making use of the tools to build their character and personal brand What are they interested in?? For instance,Translate extracurricular to various working skills (team building, problem solving, etc)The power is also within the classroom. Create group work activities, where students must lead, present, motivate and solve conflicts, all while getting the task done under time constraints. Student memberships; shadowingScholarships give students the ability to get their name out in the community (How many of your students even know about NAF scholarships? Encourage them to apply. Take class tor after school time if you must to help them draft . Work with the English department)
Once students have made use of their tools , they can begin completing a critical piece of their NAF experience : the internshipI realize in this economy it is very difficult to secure internships as your students are competing with one another, college students and even those who are in the professional world already. There are ways around this and you can get creative. If we have a few minutes at the end we can discuss ideas as a group, but my focus is not about the lack of internship opportunities. They are there. You just need to work with your students to encourage them to actually look. Cold call. Its hard to say no to a student. That too, a very young student. Make use of Social Media!! -I remember my NAF internship as I worked for a Fortune 500 company. I was so inspired by the VP of Finance. She walked in and you knew she was important and can get the job done. That’s what I wanted to be. I mentioned before that I joined AOF as a way to differentiate myself, but also because of the people in it. Even back then I knew the importance of one’s network. You’d be surprised how important social and professional ties are to both high school students and those of us who are in the working world. Almost all your students have a facebook account. If they don’t, you should encourage them to get one. Probably very few of them have LinkedIn accounts. Its very important for you as educators to encourage the use of these online systems, but also demonstrate the difference on how these mediums look like.
People management is in all fields and service quality is particularly important to Marriott’s business. All mentioned translate to working with people. Therefore, it is critical to ensure you are encouraging group work
