Victim Offender Mediation Research Paper
Utilitarianism and victim offender mediation (REFERENTIE). The moral philosopher Jeremy
Bentham developed an influential consequentialist philosophy of morality: utilitarianism. Bentham
s starting point in his philosophy is that feelings of pleasure and pain direct us in everything, and
thereby also direct us in determining what is right and wrong. He believes that pleasure/happiness
is intrinsically good, and pain/suffering is intrinsically bad. We strive for the most happiness by
trying to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. According to Bentham, the right thing to do is to
search for the greatest balance of pleasure over pain in choosing our actions. So in his philosophy,
moral behavior is completely dependent on the consequences related to our actions. When applying
Bentham s philosophy of morality to criminal justice and in specific victim offender mediation, the
most important question to ask is: does it maximize utility? Restorative justice practices are often
compared to the traditional criminal justice system, so in our modern day situation Bentham would
like to know which of these justice reactions allows for the greatest overall balance of pleasure
/happiness over pain/suffering. You can look at this problem in two ways: maximizing utility for
the group of victims and offenders, or maximizing utility for society. In the... Show more content on

Victims are for example reported to have a higher chance of receiving compensation with
restorative justice than in criminal justice procedures (Braithwaite, 1999; Latimer, Dowden, Muise,
2005). Positive effects of victim offender mediation are also found for offenders and society. In a
systematic review of Strang, Sherman Mayo Wilson, Woods and Arial (2013) it turned out that
offender recidivism was much lower when offenders were randomly assigned to victim offender
mediation than when they were

Bureaucracy and Bureaucrats Essay
Bureaucracy and Bureaucrats
Americans depend on government bureaucracies to accomplish most of what we expect from
government, and we are oftentimes critical of a bureaucracy s handling of its responsibilities.
Bureaucracy is essential for carrying out the tasks of government. As government bureaucracies
grew in the twentieth century, new management techniques sought to promote greater efficiency.
The reorganization of the government to create the Department of Homeland Security and the Bush
administration s simultaneous push to contract out jobs to private employers raises the question as
to whether the government or the private sector can best manage our national security. Ironically,
the criticism of the bureaucracy may be a product ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Congress has delegated a significant amount of authority to the federal bureaucracy by granting the
agencies the power to draft federal regulations (rule making) and to adjudicate conflicts over these
regulations.
Presidents use the rule making power of bureaucracies to shape policy.
Before 1883, bureaucrats were political appointees the product of the spoils system.
The Civil Service Act of 1883 created the merit system by requiring that appointees to public office
be qualified for the job, thereby ending the spoils system.
The Organization of the Executive Branch
I. What are the agencies that make up the Executive Branch?
The federal bureaucracy consists of the Cabinet departments, independent agencies, government
corporations, and independent regulatory commissions.
The Cabinet departments are usually headed by a secretary (the Department of Justice is headed by
the Attorney General), but it is the bureau level that has the responsibility for interacting with the
public.
Independent agencies exist outside the structure of the Cabinet departments and carry out functions
that are too costly for the private sector such as NASA.
Government corporations (the U.S. Postal Service and Amtrak) are designed to run like a business
and, we hope, generate a profit.
Independent regulatory commissions regulate some aspect

The Atlantic And Pacific Coasts Fish Stocks Overall Show...
ANSWER / RÉPONSE QUESTION 1
The Atlantic and Pacific Coasts fish stocks overall show little improvement, despite the
management strategies that have been implemented to try to increase fish population. This is
primarily due to overexploitation
North Coast and Hecate Strait
Herring and Salmon populations are low overall. The Prince Reupert Herirng stock is moderate in
abundance, while the Haida Gwaii stock has shown little improvement for the past ten years, The
Central Coast Herring stock numbers are at a record low in abundance. Sockeye Salmon
population has been consistently declining since the 1990 s due to the dangerous nature of their
route of migration of this species through to the Gulf of Alaska. Groundfish stock tends to vary
from year to year. The decline in dissolved oxygen in these areas has shown to affect distribution.
Groundfish stocks are improving overall, but those of shorter life spans (ie. flat fish) show much
greater improvement then those with longer life spans (ie. rockfish).
West Coast Vancouver Island Pacific hake, herring and Sockeye salmon, all remain in low
abundance in this area. The size of herring when they reach maturity is also declining. Sockeye
survivability is considered low in 2010. A single species the pacific sardine was once collapsed
coast wide, has now reached its original full range in this ecozone. Groundfish stocks on Vancouver
Island, like those found in the North Coast, tend to experience a decreased dissolve oxygen

The Ponzi Scheme Research Paper
Life is simply a game, a game played by billions of people every day. Just like any other game
some players play by the rules and others choose not to. Some players go to work every day to
earn money whereas some cheat and find alternatives to working hard to become wealthy.
Majority of these cheaters play money making schemes on those who have worked hard and
countless hours for their money. There have been many people affected by countless amounts of
schemes in the past. A conspiracy in particular that has destroyed the lives of hundreds of
thousands is a scheme known as the Ponzi scheme. Named after Charlie Ponzi, it was first used in

operation. It all starts with a central operator who promises investors incredible returns that
cannot be found in the market today, convincing the investor that they use secret trading

for with the investment of later investors. In reality there is no actual business and no profit

The Issue of Prayer in Schools
Often, as was the case of the abolition of slavery in our country, it seems that courts ratified change
that had already occurred in the ethos of the national culture and consciousness of the nation after
the tide had already turned. This is the case with the issue of prayer in schools and the separation of
church and state in general.
As much as the history of court cases is good evidence for the separation of church and state and
with it the denial of prayer in schools, supporters of prayer in public schools can and do make the
argument that the intention of the Founding Father s of this nation was to form a nation centered
around prayer and Biblical instruction with it s accompanying values. Their understanding of
religious freedom was no doubt defined and acted out in the context of their culture and religious
influences. Courts of their day certainly did not push back against the integration of church and
state as we think of it today. Why else would the countries oldest and now most prestigious
institutions have their roots founded in the preparation of clergy for religious work? Harvard, Yale
and Princeton, among other great universities, were actually built for the purpose of raising up
educated pastors. Use the david lose inside quote Proponents of prayer in schools will no doubt
point to reverse discrimination or infringement upon their own religious freedom if they or their
children are not allowed to express their faith by praying in public. With the

Compare And Contrast Allorganic Vs Osteopathic
There is more than one type of doctorate in the medical field. A physician can earn either an
allopathic (MD) or an osteopathic (DO) degree. An allopathic degree is the more traditional form of
medical education that focuses on treating and eliminating disease with medicines. An osteopathic
education focuses more on holistic medicine, preventing disease and an additional 300 to 500 hours
of hands on musculoskeletal manipulation training (Medline Plus). The philosophy between the
two paths may differ, but at the end of either path is a fully qualified doctor. My mother is family

MD. Even though one is an osteopathic physician and the other an allopathic physician, they have
both had very similar experiences. To become a physician, whether allopathic or osteopathic,
requires similar education, training, certification, and motivation. Both allopathic and osteopathic
physicians are required to have the same basic education. They are required to graduate from
college with a bachelor s degree. My mother has a bachelor s degree with a double major in
biology and chemistry, and my father has a bachelors in premed biochemistry. It does not have to

Sex Pistols and Censorship
Punks have always been known for pushing the envelope, but the Sex Pistols pushed it farther
than anyone to date in the genre of punk music. The Sex Pistols boisterous lyrics and edgy
appearance led for them to be heavily censored by the radio and print media and even banned in
many places, Britain and abroad.
They were like nothing seen or heard before. Their torn clothes and spiked hair sent a visual
message that they did not care what others thought. The band was actually put together by Malcolm

banning prayers in public education and the legalization of abortion and pornography.
Conservatives like Jerry Falwell demanded for America to return to its traditional values, and
blamed numerous factors from television to the public school system (Foner, VOF, 312). In
addition, Conservatives stood against the Equal Rights Amendment, the feminist revolution, and the
homosexual revolution. Conservative women like Phyllis Schlafly successfully defeated the Equal

More so, the corporate objectives of Ford Australia lead logically to the marketing objectives. The
company has successfully organized its management systems in such a way to facilitate effective
sales and marketing of the products across the different market segments. It is critical to look at the
effectiveness of its market strategy both in the short and long term with the objective to keep the
company abreast with potential challenges, and opportunities that are presented to its business.
Through the critical review of its marketing strategy, then vital elements as regards its future growth
and development can be developed. Through such analysis, the company s management can draw
key lessons helpful of making the company achieve its marketing objectives.
The inclusion of environmental management systems and value at Ford Australia plays a critical
role to the marketing (Ottman, 2011). This is important in perspective of the high level of
knowledge and consumers awareness on environmental matters. Most of the local consumers would
not want to associate with companies that have zero concerns for the environment (Polonsky

Life of the Buddha Essay

Buddhism arose in northern India in the 6th century BCE. The historical founder of Buddhism,
Siddharta Gautama (c.560 480 BCE) was born in a village called Lumbini into a warrior tribe
called the Sakyas (from where he derived the title Sakyamuni, meaning Sage of the Sakyas ).
According to tradition Gautama s father, Suddhodana was the king of a small principality based on
the town of Kapilavastu. His mother, Queen Maya, died seven days after Gautama s birth.
Following the death of Maya, Suddhodana married Maya s sister, Prajapati, by whom Gautama was

In the third he identified the four noble truths: the universality of suffering, the cause of suffering
through selfish desire, the solution to suffering and the way to overcome suffering. This final point
is called the Noble Eightfold Path, this being eight steps consisting of wisdom (right views, right
intention) ethics (right speech, right action, right livelihood), mental discipline (right effort, right
mindfulness, right concentration), which ultimately lead to liberation from the source of suffering.
Although initially hesitant to share his insight on the grounds that humanity might not be ready for
such a teaching, the Buddha decided to communicate his discovery to those willing to listen. His
first converts were the five ascetics with whom he had lived when he himself followed the lifestyle
of the ascetic. To these he preached his first sermon in the Deer Park at Benares, outlining to them
the Four Noble Truths. Out of this small group the community of monks (or sangha) grew to about
sixty in size and included Buddha s cousin, Ananda, and his son, Rahula. Later the Buddha was
persuaded by his step mother and cousin to accept women into the sangha.
The remaining forty five years of the Buddha s life were spent journeying around the plain of the
Ganges, teaching and receiving visitors. At the age of 79 the Buddha fell seriously ill and died.

Small Group Incentive Pay
Traditionally, most employers compensated their employees based on a set hourly wage or
annual salary (Martocchio, 2013). Today, there are many companies that utilize incentive pay
programs to replace part or all of the base pay to manage payroll expenses and to connect pay to
performance. Incentive pay, also referred to as pay for performance or variable pay, rewards
individuals for partly or completely achieving a predetermined goal (Martocchio, 2013). Basically,
incentivepay is compensation, outside of the employee s regular wages, which can vary depending

the employer would lose less than he normally would pay employees a straight hourly or salary

A Meaningful Life
A Meaningful Life in Different Cultures
The Greek Alexander Romance describes the life of Alexander the Great, focusing primarily on
his great military feats as a leader of Greece and highlighting why people remember him as a great
Greco Roman leader. Similarly, the Gospel of Matthew explains the life of JesusChrist through his
teachings and miracles, which underlines why people know him as the greatest figure from Judeo
Christian culture. Alexander and Jesus are similar in that they died in their early thirties, were
kings, and underwent numerous triumphs on earth. Alexander sought to build his empire and
essentially rule the world through victories on the battlefield by conquering neighboring countries.
Jesus sought to destroy evil on earth by establishing God s Kingdom and teachings in the hearts of
all. Comparing the lives of these great Greco Roman and Judeo Christian leaders highlights the
differences in cultural opinion on the highest good in life, how one obtains that good, and what
that means in connection to an afterlife. Judeo Christian and Greco Roman perspectives on

Science Behind Black Holes
all of you probably know what a black hole is, its a black thing in space that is like a vacuum and
sucks up anything in its way, this is pretty much what most people think of when they think of a
black hole. but today I m going to talk about the actual science behind black holes, how are they
made, whats inside of them, and what would happen if you went inside of one?
How are black holes made?
in order to get into how black holes are mad you need to understand how stars work. stars are
massive collections of mainly hydrogen atoms, within a stars core, nuclear fusion causes hydrogen
atoms get crushed into helium atoms which releases a ton of energy, this energy comes in the form
of radiation, this radiation pushes against gravity which makes a nice balance between the two.
Balance is key
For the star to maintain this balance it must maintain fusion within the core, however with much
larger stars, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
so once your inside what happens? there are a lot of theories to what happens,I m going to talk
about to of them, one theory is the following, black holes curve space so much that once you get
inside there is only one way to go, kind of like a very tight alleyway, as you would go down the
alley way, the mass of the black hole would get so concentrated that gravity would become
millions time stronger, ripping your cells apart until you are no more then a stream of atoms.
another theory states that when you enter the black hole you would quickly be introduced into a
massive firewall and be burned to death instantly. as far as how long you would survive either of
these options would depend on the size of the black hole. a smaller black hole would kill you
almost instantly while a massive black hole you could probably survive in for a while. how long?

the sky was dimming, and the fridge and blender were calling my name! That s right, SNACK

Self-Obsessive Nature Of The Millennial Generation
Millennials are the most intriguing generation the country of the United States has ever seen. The
GI Generation were forced to deal with the First World War where they became the Lost
Generation whose morals, including God, family, life and death, were flipped on their heads. The
Greatest Generation had the responsibility of facing Nazis and dealing with the post traumatic
stress disorder. The Baby Boomers were the post world war generations who introduced credit and
were the first TV generation. Generation Xdealt with Civil Rights Movement and a rapid increase
in divorce amongst parents creating trauma for children. However, Millennials seem to deal with
several issues that previous generations of the past as well as the scrutiny of previous generations
alongside threats like terrorism and the threat of infringement on privacy or how self obsessed we
are by our social media use. However, despite things being much harder in the millennial
generation, such as education, we are viewed as weak.
The self obsessive nature of my generation comes from the use of social media and how we crave
the liking and approval of others through our pictures or posts. Since 2005 the emergence of
social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or VSCO has allowed this generation to
share their lives in a glorified fashion in order to gain followers and attention from likers.
However, this creates an issue for our generation as the more we glorify the events in our life the
more disappointing life is. For instance, say you go to a Washington Nationals game and you
send out an amazing selfie to post for Instagram with the caption reading, Had an amazing day with
my fam!, but the question is...did you really? Based off of most peoples posts now a days it seems
like their lives are just splendid. However, life is not as hyped up as it is on social media
which will set everyone up for disappointment. That to me is the worst issue that Millennials face
is that they try to live up to a standard of life that doesn t exist.
The other issue my generation experiences is known as the Sins of the Father. The previous
generations never dealt with their own issues so they push it on to the younger generation to fix the
issue. The

in Milan, Ohio to Samuel Edison Jr. and Nancy Elliott Edison and they together had seven siblings
and he was the youngest of the family. Only four of his siblings including him survived to

methods for a filament using cotton and linen thread. He also used wood splints, papers coiled
in various ways. Several months after the patent was passed Edison and his team discovered
bamboo filament and it lasted over 1200 hours. From 1878 1880 Edison and his associates
worked on at least 3,000 different theories. The way it worked was it made light by using
electricity to heat a thin strip of material called a filament until it gets hot enough to glow. It was
made with a filament housed in a glass vacuum bulb. Thomas had a glassblowing shed that is
where he made the bulbs. The goal was to use less electricity than the arc lamp. In 1879, he
created his first ever high resistance incandescent electric light. The way it worked would it passed
electricity through a thin platinum filament in the glass vacuum. Which that kept the filament from
melting. The reason it didn t work is because it only lasted a few hours. Even though it was closer
to the light bulb used today there was still a few improvements to be

Daddy s Hands Research Paper
Daddy s Hands
Teenage girls lives are shaped in many different ways. Everything is a big deal to a teenage girl;
what she wears, what she participates in, and who she dates. A girl s relationship with her father
strongly influences her life. Whether the relationship with her father is good or bad, the daughter
will be effected by it. There are four main types of fathers: the Absentee Father, the Intermittent
Father, the Abusive Father, and the Perfect Father. A father s relationship with his daughter
influences her opinion of men, therefore she judges every man based on her father s example.
This impacts her dating life, social life, and leads to more relationship issues with men throughout

In an article about fathers leaving affecting his daughters, it says, As the first man in her life, the
young girl s father creates the prototype for her ideal partner consciously and unconsciously. He
goes on to be experienced by his pubescent daughter as the mirror on the wall the ultimate
reflection, not only of her fairness but her desirability (Kavanagh, 2002). A father is the man she
loved first and is supposed to be a little girl s favorite man. Her daddy is the person who is
supposed to be there for her from the moment she is born, to the moment he dies. The Perfect
Father is the most important man in his daughter s life and is involved in all her decisions. This
may cause the daughter to be indecisive because she relies too much on her father. It may lead
to the daughter comparing every man to her father, and some may not measure up. Some girls
even look for a man to marry that is exactly like her father. In my opinion, I think that having
your father be the role model for a future husband is ideal. A girl is used to the way her father acts
and finding someone like him would be an easy transition. The Perfect Father may not always be
the ideal father for everyone, but for me it

Analysis Of Loung Ung s First They Killed My Father
Loung Ung s First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers follows her
struggles as a child during the Angkar rule. Children in Cambodia directly suffered from trauma,
which obviously dismisses the myth that children experience less pain than adults. The importance
of Ung s book is the emotional impact she has on the reader because she gives a voice to the victims
and to the dead. As Americans, this topic, the Cambodian genocide does not get taught commonly
in education. It shows the trauma that the citizens went through and how it affected the country.
The organization of the story follows Loung Ung s life from the day they left their home to the
day she left for America. Since, this story is from a child s point of view there is less of a
political importance and more emotional based. Each chapter contributes to Loung Ung s main
point because as the story develops so does the affect on Ung. Each chapter Loung becomes more
aware with her surroundings and forced to grow up quick.
The Khmer Rouge wanted to get rid of social classes and make everyone equal and to do so
Loung Ung s father states, The Khmer Rouge are executing people perceived to be a threat
against the Angkar. This new country has no law or order. City people are killed for no reason.

unlikely, because each c2 and c3 narcotics get placed in a bubble sheet with the set amount of
pills counted out for the dosage. If she is not complaining about not having enough medicine, she
wants to fill the prescription too early and she doesn t understand why the pharmacy can not fill
it. Her insurance will not cover it unless she follows the correct dosage. She tries to pay for the
prescription without insurance but the price can be a few hundred and she responds with, you can
shove the money up your ass. The hospice narc eaters are worse than the retail. These patients are
terminally ill and they still want to get that high or they want to sell their narcotics. For example,
patient Sara Lee gets daily narcotics with only one day s worth, because her children will take her
medicine and sell it. This causes that no one else can sign the manifest saying that the patient
received the medication. This can only help so much. The pharmacy gets multiple calls saying that
patient s children is selling the medication right off the front porch.

The Hidden Cost of Hybrid Vehicles
One of the most debated subjects in today s society is the growing concern over global warming.
This concern is derived from the increase in global pollution from many aspects but in particular
greenhouse gasses. This increase in pollution is attributed to a growing population that is more
dependent on modern commodities. Of these commodities one of the greatest contributors to this
cycle are motor vehicles. Because of the growing concern over the environmental effects of cars,
manufacturers have began to develop new vehicle types in order to reduce the amount of pollution

This particular project will observe how the carbon footprint of automobiles effect the global
climate? Has the introduction of eco friendly vehicles changed this footprint? Ultimately the end
result will yield the environmental impact of eco friendly vehicle production, and whether it can
outweigh its carbon footprint. It is important to note that both the environmental effects and
economic effects are crucial in the advancement of technologies used by the auto manufacturers; in
a sense both are dependent on the other.
The purpose of this paper is to support the amateur research experiment in regards to the efficiency
of combustion and combustion hybrid engines. A brief literature review on the effects of automobile

Yeats, B. William. The Collected Poems of WB Yeats. New York: Macmillan, 1996. 318 The
importance of this book is that it contains some of the works of poetry which were carried out by
William Yeats. Arguably, the most salient feature in the book is the attempt at portraying the shift
that characterized Yeats in his work, so that his works are arranged almost chronologically to
underscore this standpoint. Works that depict him as a bard of the Celtic Twilight, reviving
Rosicrucian symbols and legends are the most frontal. These are followed up by works which
show the shift away from plush romanticism. The same are exhibited by the heavy presence of

of prosaic language. The poem has been written within the context of a visitor who has walked
into a classroom under the guidance of a kind elderly nun. The importance of this poem to this
reading is that in it, the poet addresses the dynamism that has shaped and continues to shape the
civil society, progress and modernity, as opposed to the status quo ante which predated the Civil
War or the Anglo Irish War. The importance of this poem to this reading is also seen in the fact
that it betrays the political ideals that Yeats had: the poem implicates the speaker as being a
senator. It is in after 1924 that Yeats served as a senator. This makes the poem sound like a poem
which was penned down after the civil war, given that it is written from the standpoint of a more
peaceful and politically stable Ireland. Thus, the poem is also instrumental as it lets the reader in
into Yeats political orientation and leanings. Thus, the many qualities Yeats had and the many
fields he operated in, in terms of career are well confirmed by this poem. The

Alfred Hitchcock Identity And Identity
The greatest art in films is by the means of the ability to create an emotion in the viewers of the
film and by the means of and imagery. Alfred Hitchcock, for long time, has been a household name
since he began filmmaking. Hitchcock has been able to accumulate a well known and distinct
cinematic techniques making him stand out as one of the best filmmakers around the globe. What
makes Hitchcock s films must watch movies are how he draws his viewers emotion and leave
them in suspense (Maher 246). Hitchcock s The Birds is an American horror filmdropped in 1963.
The film is loosely based on the 1952 story of Daphne Du Maurierand focuses on a sudden series,
unexplained powerful and violent birds attacking the people of Bodega Bay (Maher 247). In this
movie, the fact that viewers do not get to know the details of the birds makes it an interesting but
a suspense film, which evokes thoughts of the audience to know much about the birds. On the
other hand, Identity, which was directed by James Mangold in 2003, revolves around the life of
ten people who seeks refuge in an isolated motel when a vicious storm breaks out in the desert of
Nevada (Falsafi, Khorashad, and Khorashad 2521). As they seek refuge, a serious murderer, Taylor
Vince awaits his execution for killing a group of motel guests. This paper, using terminology
resources and cinematic techniques, seeks to expatriate the similar technique styles adopted in the
two films to enhance suspense. The cinematic techniques

Reimbursement Model
I think that reimbursement system is one of the most important implements to maintain managed
care organization. However, there are various models accessible to manage hospitals or health
care associations to keep track of reimburse payment methods. As of carefully reading through
the book, I believe a basic model of reimbursement includes Fee for services, capitation, and
salary. However, each of these models is states differently and approached it differently. First, I
believe a fee for services model is very easy payment method and remain as very important form of
reimbursement model in the health maintenance organization. Physician or any health care
provider receives payment right after providing services or procedure has been done. However,

Second Industrial Revolution In 1850
Socialism was at its peak during the late years of the 1st Industrial Revolution into the early years
of the second Industrial Revolution that started in 1850. As there was a shift from the oppressive
feudal and agrarian systems of the conservative order, industrial jobs that paid more and produced
more capital for the economy became prominent. Governments were slowly but surely turning into
constitutionalized monarchies, a step up from the absolute monarchies. However the working class
still had most of the short end of the stick when it came to their health and democratic rights. They
were crowded in unsanitary slums, overworked, underpaid for their labor, and overshadowed by
the prioritized wants of the bourgeoisie. Unlike the theories of

Describe one division of the ACA that interests you. Include the cost of joining, membership

Interest stemming from which major counseling organizations have contributed to the community

The counseling profession is currently providing educational opportunities for students to become
CACREP certified counselors completely online. This is important for active professionals who
hold full time jobs, or other limitations prevent them from studying in a classroom environment.
This is not the case for all professions for example, schools that provide an online education for

Current Sex Ed Curriculum
If you don t want your kids to drown in the pool, don t teach them to swim, hide all of the life
jackets, and let s pretend water doesn t exist. This is the general underlying concept of the
Abstinence only programs taught in schools across the country. Abstinence only curriculums are
taught in thirty seven states and is considered the most common method when instructing sex
education. I wouldn t call education though, seeing that only thirteen of these thirty seven states
require the information presented to students to be medically accurate. With a staggering amount of
850,000 teen pregnancies a year and 9.1 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases annually.
America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These curriculums should be open to identifying with all genders, ethnicities, and sexual
orientations. It should address rape culture, what constitutes abuse, and what behaviors are
acceptable in a sexual relationship.
Abstinence only programs are ineffective. 62% of U.S. males and 70% of U.S. females have had
vaginal sex by the time they were eighteen. Humans are primal creatures with biological urges,
and assuming that we all have the same morals is outrageous. Abstinence only programs promote
an idea that if one has sex outside of marriage that it is dangerous and sinful. Though our body is
a temple, and we must respect our boundaries. Not everybody s boundaries are the same.
Columbia University concluded that virginity pledge programs increase pledge takers risk of
pregnancy and STDs. 88% of these pledge takers initiated sex prior to marriage, they were also
proven less likely to use contraception or get screened for sexually transmitted diseases. The
Abstinence only program is instilling humility in culture. Children cannot reach out and ask
questions when sex and any kind of sexual desire is ostracized. Sexual activity in high school
students decreased noticeably from 1991 to 97, prior to funding abstinence only programs. Why did
this happen? It wasn t the government s grand old testament pitch? It was the introduction of
contraceptives. There is nothing wrong with abstinence.

Free Will and Determinism
The problem of free will and determinism is a mystery about what human beings are able to do.
The best way to describe it is to think of the alternatives taken into consideration when someone is
deciding what to do, as being parts of various alternative features (Van Inwagen). Robert Kane
argues for a new version of libertarianismwith an indeterminist element. He believes that deeper
freedom is not an illusion. Derk Pereboom takes an agnostic approach about causal determinismand
sees himself as a hard incompatibilist. I will argue against Kane and for Pereboom, because I
believe that Kane struggles to present an argument that is compatible with the latest scientific views
of the world. Robert Kane begins by explaining that there are... Show more content on

If described from a physical perspective, free will looks like chance. However, the indeterministic
chaotic process is also, experientially, the agent s effort of will something the agent is doing. The
agent s choice is something that the agent does and not something that happens to the agent.
Therefore, the choice reflects the agent s effort, even though the outcome is not yet determined.
Kane ends his argument by saying that these reflections naturally raise further questions about
whether the indeterminism required by an incompatibilist theory of free will is actually there in
the brain and that every undetermined, self forming, free choice is the initiation of what might
be called a value experiment whose justification lies in the future and is not fully explained by
past reasons. Derk Pereboom s position is an agnostic approach about causal determinism. He
contends that if causal determinism were true, we do not have the sort of free will required for
moral responsibility. As a hard compatibilist, he believes that life without this kind of free will
need not preclude a sense of meaning based on morality, and, in some respects, it could even be
support it. When arguing against compatibilism, Pereboom first defines compatibilism as free will
of the type required for moral responsibility. He says that it is compatible with determinism and
that compatibilists will say that we do in fact have this sort of free will. He then defines a
libertarianist as someone

Hearing Loss At The University Of New South Wales
Hearing loss is problem that can occur anywhere, one of the most common places where this can
occur is at a concert. Scientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia believe that short
term hearing loss after being exposed to loud excessive noise is most likely the body s way of
coping with the situation. This defensive mechanism cannot cope or protect the earwith high
frequency noise, which could by caused by listening to loud music through headphones.
It is not the acute exposure but the continuous noise expose especially that of a high frequency that
can cause difficulties later on in someone s life. Our ears can adapt to loud noise or frequencies but
even then, like everything else they have their limits and when you exceed those limits, it can lead
to very negative outcomes.
Hearing loss can occur at any age, but this mostly affect children and young adults.
Approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69, 26 million Americans
have some form of hearing loss due to high exposure occurring in places of work or recreational
activities. About 16% of teens have experience some form of hearing loss caused by loud noise
according to a 2010 report based on a survey from the centers for Disease Control and
Prevention(CDC). Everything we hear in our everyday lives has a decibel range, which it shows
how loud the noise is. Such as the humming of a refrigerator is 45 decibels, normal conversation is
60 decibels, an mp3 player at maximum

Iago Deception In Othello
In Shakespeare s Othello, a secondary character, Iago, is continuously able to twist the thoughts of
other characters. Iago s ability to convince others of false information and lead people into
misconceptions reminds me of a harsh memory from my past. While I enjoyed my young teenage
years, there is always a time that eats away at my mind. If Othelloand the others that Iagoso easily
deceived had lived they would also look back with regret in a similar way that I do. Deception
drove Iago s personality and actions; deception was also a main reason I lost a friend that I
entrusted in and counted on daily. Iago is the gateway to deception in Othello. It is through Iago
that readers are able to see how deception can essentially ruin a relationship or those that are
being deceived. One of first examples seen of Iago s deception is seen in Act 1 Scene 3. While Iago
is giving is first soliloquy he explains his plotting to ruin Othello and Desdemonas marriage.
Specifically, Iago says After some time, to abuse Othello s ear that he is too familiar with his
wife... The Moor is of a free and open nature that thinks men honest that bet seem to be so. Here
Iago says he plans on convincing Othello that Cassio is becoming too intimate with Desdemona.
He believes that this will work because Cassio is a smooth and easy talker and also a good
looking guy. Iago continues to say that Othello is easily convinced because he thinks any man
who seems honest must be honest. Later in the play Iago successfully convinces Othello that
Desdemona is fornicating with Cassio and no longer loves him. In Act 4 Scene 1 Iago and
Othello discuss Cassio and Desdemona, Iago argues that he believes that the two are becoming
very flirtatious. Othello does not want to believe this about Desdemona. For Iago to prove to
Othello that Cassio has been with Desdemona, he orders Othello to hide and watch Cassio s face
throughout the conversation. Iago also tells Othello look out for Cassio laughing as that is a sign
that he is admitting to being Desdemona. All of this is Iago s maneuvers of deception, by acting
as the good guy to Othello he makes Othello trust in him more and leads to easier deception on
Iago s part. After Othello heads off to hide

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech
Professional baseball player, Lou Gehrig, in his speech, Farewell to Baseball Address, sheds
light on his baseball career and why it was coming to an abrupt end. Gehrig s purpose was not to
be distraught about him getting diagnosed with ALS, but instead send a message to not take
anything for granted and be thankful for everything that happens. He adopts a thankful tone by
showing how humble he is to have played the game of baseball with many great people thus
using grateful terminology for his teammates and associates and reassuring terminology for
baseball fans who were worried about him and his fatal disease. Gehrig appeals to ethos in his
farewell speech by explaining to his audience how lucky he feels about who he was able to play...

Without the usage of pathos, Gehrig s farewell speech wouldn t have been nearly as effective
with his audience and the audience that would hear his speech or read his speech at a later time.
Without pathos, it would ve just been another professional sport players retirement speech. Many
key elements contributed to the emotional appeal of Gehrig s speech; first, he was finally
addressing the reason why he was retiring from baseball, which was because of a life threatening
disease known as ALS. Always regarded as one who could pull through anything, Gehrig finally
made it clear through this speech that battling this disease was going to be the hardest battle yet
and it would prevent him continuing to do what he loved which was play baseball. Nevertheless,
Gehrig did not wish to evoke sadness out of his audience, throughout his speech, he sought to give
hope over despair, thankfulness over pity, and humbleness over self righteousness. It was so
important that he displayed these emotions because then he would contrast to the ideals that many
American people had come to believe. Also throughout the speech Gehrig did not seek sympathy
from his situation; in fact, he did not once mention his disease specifically and rather focused on the
positive moments that he had experienced throughout his life. Hence, people connected to this
speech because here was a man who had experienced hardship upon hardship and yet still

  • 2. Victim Offender Mediation Research Paper Utilitarianism and victim offender mediation (REFERENTIE). The moral philosopher Jeremy Bentham developed an influential consequentialist philosophy of morality: utilitarianism. Bentham s starting point in his philosophy is that feelings of pleasure and pain direct us in everything, and thereby also direct us in determining what is right and wrong. He believes that pleasure/happiness is intrinsically good, and pain/suffering is intrinsically bad. We strive for the most happiness by trying to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. According to Bentham, the right thing to do is to search for the greatest balance of pleasure over pain in choosing our actions. So in his philosophy, moral behavior is completely dependent on the consequences related to our actions. When applying Bentham s philosophy of morality to criminal justice and in specific victim offender mediation, the most important question to ask is: does it maximize utility? Restorative justice practices are often compared to the traditional criminal justice system, so in our modern day situation Bentham would like to know which of these justice reactions allows for the greatest overall balance of pleasure /happiness over pain/suffering. You can look at this problem in two ways: maximizing utility for the group of victims and offenders, or maximizing utility for society. In the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Issue of Prayer in Schools Often, as was the case of the abolition of slavery in our country, it seems that courts ratified change that had already occurred in the ethos of the national culture and consciousness of the nation after the tide had already turned. This is the case with the issue of prayer in schools and the separation of church and state in general. As much as the history of court cases is good evidence for the separation of church and state and with it the denial of prayer in schools, supporters of prayer in public schools can and do make the argument that the intention of the Founding Father s of this nation was to form a nation centered around prayer and Biblical instruction with it s accompanying values. Their understanding of religious freedom was no doubt defined and acted out in the context of their culture and religious influences. Courts of their day certainly did not push back against the integration of church and state as we think of it today. Harvard, Yale and Princeton, among other great universities, were actually built for the purpose of raising up educated pastors. The Greatest Generation had the responsibility of facing Nazis and dealing with the post traumatic stress disorder. The Baby Boomers were the post world war generations who introduced credit and were the first TV generation. Generation Xdealt with Civil Rights Movement and a rapid increase in divorce amongst parents creating trauma for children. However, Millennials seem to deal with several issues that previous generations of the past as well as the scrutiny of previous generations alongside threats like terrorism and the threat of infringement on privacy or how self obsessed we are by our social media use. However, despite things being much harder in the millennial generation, such as education, we are viewed as weak. The self obsessive nature of my generation comes from the use of social media and how we crave the liking and approval of others through our pictures or posts. Since 2005 the emergence of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or VSCO has allowed this generation to share their lives in a glorified fashion in order to gain followers and attention from likers. However, this creates an issue for our generation as the more we glorify the events in our life the more disappointing life is. For instance, say you go to a Washington Nationals game and you send out an amazing selfie to post for Instagram with the caption reading, Had an amazing day with my fam!, but the question is...did you really? Based off of most peoples posts now a days it seems like their lives are just splendid. However, life is not as hyped up as it is on social media which will set everyone up for disappointment. That to me is the worst issue that Millennials face is that they try to live up to a standard of life that doesn t exist. The other issue my generation experiences is known as the Sins of the Father. The previous generations never dealt with their own issues so they push it on to the younger generation to fix the issue. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1879, he created his first ever high resistance incandescent electric light. The way it worked would it passed electricity through a thin platinum filament in the glass vacuum. This poem is an eight lined stanza which is heavily laden with rhymes and the use of prosaic language. The poem has been written within the context of a visitor who has walked into a classroom under the guidance of a kind elderly nun. The importance of this poem to this reading is that in it, the poet addresses the dynamism that has shaped and continues to shape the civil society, progress and modernity, as opposed to the status quo ante which predated the Civil War or the Anglo Irish War. The importance of this poem to this reading is also seen in the fact that it betrays the political ideals that Yeats had: the poem implicates the speaker as being a senator. It is in after 1924 that Yeats served as a senator. This makes the poem sound like a poem which was penned down after the civil war, given that it is written from the standpoint of a more peaceful and politically stable Ireland. Thus, the poem is also instrumental as it lets the reader in into Yeats political orientation and leanings. Thus, the many qualities Yeats had and the many fields he operated in, in terms of career are well confirmed by this poem. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is the general underlying concept of the Abstinence only programs taught in schools across the country. Abstinence only curriculums are taught in thirty seven states and is considered the most common method when instructing sex education. I wouldn t call education though, seeing that only thirteen of these thirty seven states require the information presented to students to be medically accurate. With a staggering amount of 850,000 teen pregnancies a year and 9.1 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases annually. America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These curriculums should be open to identifying with all genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. It should address rape culture, what constitutes abuse, and what behaviors are acceptable in a sexual relationship. Abstinence only programs are ineffective. 62% of U.S. males and 70% of U.S. females have had vaginal sex by the time they were eighteen. Humans are primal creatures with biological urges, and assuming that we all have the same morals is outrageous. Abstinence only programs promote an idea that if one has sex outside of marriage that it is dangerous and sinful. Though our body is a temple, and we must respect our boundaries. Not everybody s boundaries are the same. Columbia University concluded that virginity pledge programs increase pledge takers risk of pregnancy and STDs. 88% of these pledge takers initiated sex prior to marriage, they were also proven less likely to use contraception or get screened for sexually transmitted diseases. The Abstinence only program is instilling humility in culture. Children cannot reach out and ask questions when sex and any kind of sexual desire is ostracized. Sexual activity in high school students decreased noticeably from 1991 to 97, prior to funding abstinence only programs. Why did this happen? It wasn t the government s grand old testament pitch? It was the introduction of contraceptives. There is nothing wrong with abstinence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Free Will and Determinism The problem of free will and determinism is a mystery about what human beings are able to do. The best way to describe it is to think of the alternatives taken into consideration when someone is deciding what to do, as being parts of various alternative features (Van Inwagen). Robert Kane argues for a new version of libertarianismwith an indeterminist element. He believes that deeper freedom is not an illusion. Derk Pereboom takes an agnostic approach about causal determinismand sees himself as a hard incompatibilist. I will argue against Kane and for Pereboom, because I believe that Kane struggles to present an argument that is compatible with the latest scientific views of the world. Robert Kane begins by explaining that there are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If described from a physical perspective, free will looks like chance. However, the indeterministic chaotic process is also, experientially, the agent s effort of will something the agent is doing. The agent s choice is something that the agent does and not something that happens to the agent. Therefore, the choice reflects the agent s effort, even though the outcome is not yet determined. Kane ends his argument by saying that these reflections naturally raise further questions about whether the indeterminism required by an incompatibilist theory of free will is actually there in the brain and that every undetermined, self forming, free choice is the initiation of what might be called a value experiment whose justification lies in the future and is not fully explained by past reasons. Derk Pereboom s position is an agnostic approach about causal determinism. He contends that if causal determinism were true, we do not have the sort of free will required for moral responsibility. As a hard compatibilist, he believes that life without this kind of free will need not preclude a sense of meaning based on morality, and, in some respects, it could even be support it. When arguing against compatibilism, Pereboom first defines compatibilism as free will of the type required for moral responsibility. He says that it is compatible with determinism and that compatibilists will say that we do in fact have this sort of free will. He then defines a libertarianist as someone ... • 49. Hearing Loss At The University Of New South Wales Hearing loss is problem that can occur anywhere, one of the most common places where this can occur is at a concert. Scientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia believe that short term hearing loss after being exposed to loud excessive noise is most likely the body s way of coping with the situation. This defensive mechanism cannot cope or protect the earwith high frequency noise, which could by caused by listening to loud music through headphones. It is not the acute exposure but the continuous noise expose especially that of a high frequency that can cause difficulties later on in someone s life. Our ears can adapt to loud noise or frequencies but even then, like everything else they have their limits and when you exceed those limits, it can lead to very negative outcomes. Hearing loss can occur at any age, but this mostly affect children and young adults. Approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69, 26 million Americans have some form of hearing loss due to high exposure occurring in places of work or recreational activities. About 16% of teens have experience some form of hearing loss caused by loud noise according to a 2010 report based on a survey from the centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). Everything we hear in our everyday lives has a decibel range, which it shows how loud the noise is. Such as the humming of a refrigerator is 45 decibels, normal conversation is 60 decibels, an mp3 player at maximum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Iago Deception In Othello In Shakespeare s Othello, a secondary character, Iago, is continuously able to twist the thoughts of other characters. Iago s ability to convince others of false information and lead people into misconceptions reminds me of a harsh memory from my past. While I enjoyed my young teenage years, there is always a time that eats away at my mind. If Othelloand the others that Iagoso easily deceived had lived they would also look back with regret in a similar way that I do. Deception drove Iago s personality and actions; deception was also a main reason I lost a friend that I entrusted in and counted on daily. Iago is the gateway to deception in Othello. It is through Iago that readers are able to see how deception can essentially ruin a relationship or those that are being deceived. One of first examples seen of Iago s deception is seen in Act 1 Scene 3. While Iago is giving is first soliloquy he explains his plotting to ruin Othello and Desdemonas marriage. Specifically, Iago says After some time, to abuse Othello s ear that he is too familiar with his wife... The Moor is of a free and open nature that thinks men honest that bet seem to be so. Here Iago says he plans on convincing Othello that Cassio is becoming too intimate with Desdemona. He believes that this will work because Cassio is a smooth and easy talker and also a good looking guy. Iago continues to say that Othello is easily convinced because he thinks any man who seems honest must be honest. Later in the play Iago successfully convinces Othello that Desdemona is fornicating with Cassio and no longer loves him. In Act 4 Scene 1 Iago and Othello discuss Cassio and Desdemona, Iago argues that he believes that the two are becoming very flirtatious. Othello does not want to believe this about Desdemona. For Iago to prove to Othello that Cassio has been with Desdemona, he orders Othello to hide and watch Cassio s face throughout the conversation. Iago also tells Othello look out for Cassio laughing as that is a sign that he is admitting to being Desdemona. All of this is Iago s maneuvers of deception, by acting as the good guy to Othello he makes Othello trust in him more and leads to easier deception on Iago s part. After Othello heads off to hide ... • 51. Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech Professional baseball player, Lou Gehrig, in his speech, Farewell to Baseball Address, sheds light on his baseball career and why it was coming to an abrupt end. Gehrig s purpose was not to be distraught about him getting diagnosed with ALS, but instead send a message to not take anything for granted and be thankful for everything that happens. He adopts a thankful tone by showing how humble he is to have played the game of baseball with many great people thus using grateful terminology for his teammates and associates and reassuring terminology for baseball fans who were worried about him and his fatal disease. Gehrig appeals to ethos in his farewell speech by explaining to his audience how lucky he feels about who he was able to play... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without the usage of pathos, Gehrig s farewell speech wouldn t have been nearly as effective with his audience and the audience that would hear his speech or read his speech at a later time. Without pathos, it would ve just been another professional sport players retirement speech. Many key elements contributed to the emotional appeal of Gehrig s speech; first, he was finally addressing the reason why he was retiring from baseball, which was because of a life threatening disease known as ALS. Always regarded as one who could pull through anything, Gehrig finally made it clear through this speech that battling this disease was going to be the hardest battle yet and it would prevent him continuing to do what he loved which was play baseball. Nevertheless, Gehrig did not wish to evoke sadness out of his audience, throughout his speech, he sought to give hope over despair, thankfulness over pity, and humbleness over self righteousness. It was so important that he displayed these emotions because then he would contrast to the ideals that many American people had come to believe. Also throughout the speech Gehrig did not seek sympathy from his situation; in fact, he did not once mention his disease specifically and rather focused on the positive moments that he had experienced throughout his life. Hence, people connected to this speech because here was a man who had experienced hardship upon hardship and yet still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
