Interim Report for Engineering Ethics and Emerging Technologies
From the beginning of human civilization till present date, new innovations and technologies are
introduced into the society to improve existing lifestyle or operation methods. However, as we
approach the pinnacle of what current technologies allows us to research on, the rate at which new
technologies are surfacing is gradually decreasing. Therefore, researchers and engineers began
working on existing technologies for further improvement. One branch of emerging technology will
be convergence. Convergence technologies are the combination of technologies from absolutely
different systems, which ultimately work towards a common goal. One example would be the

Since many small scale farmers belong to low income group, this in turn represents a widening
income gap along with social repercussions. Hence more attention should be paid to improving
livestock conditions rather than developing in vitro meat. The government should be making it
easier and more affordable to raise livestock. Possible solutions include setting up of government
agencies to do research and development on rearing livestock. Agencies can share findings with
the farmers and educate them on better methods to rear their livestock. Small scale farmers can
then price their goods competitively and not be pushed out of the market by big players. Other
solutions include requesting the supermarkets to support the local farmers by selling their goods.
Singapore s Fairprice supermarket has been selling local poultry and eggs in support of the local
industry. With such measures in place, we can ensure that traditional farms can keep pace with
technology and not be phased out.
Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology can be broadly categorized under Molecular manufacturing (MM), which will be a
significant breakthrough, comparable perhaps to the Industrial Revolution but compressed into a
few years. This technology exists in nearly every conceivable application at the tiniest levels.

A New Idea For The American Tax Code Essay
This idea of reducing taxes to increase investment within the economy sounds like a good idea
but hasn t lived up to its expectations historically. The idea of supply side economics wasn t a
new idea for the American tax code. During the early 1920s, income tax rates were cut multiple
times which averaged to a total of most rates being cut by a little less than half. The Mellon Tax
Cuts named after Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon under Presidents Warren Harding and
Calvin Coolidge. He believed that changes in income tax rates causes individuals to change their
behavior and practices. As taxes rise, tax payers attempt to reduce taxable income by either
working less, retiring earlier, reducing business expansions, restructure companies or spending
more money on accountants to find tax loopholes. If executed properly tax cuts can actually
benefit economic growth, data from the Internal Revenue Service(IRS) showed that the across
the board tax cuts in the early 1920s resulted in greater tax payments and larger tax share paid by
those in the higher incomes. As the marginal tax rate on the highest income earners were cut
from 60 percent or more to just 25 percent, the amount that this tax group payed soared from
around 300 million to 700 million per year. (See Figure 2) This sudden massive increase in
revenue allowed the U.S. economy to rapidly expand during the mid and late 20s. Between 1920
to 1929, real gross national product grew at an annual average rate of 4.7 percent and

Library System
CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
I. Introduction
Freeman Dyson has said, Technology is a gift of God, after the gift of life; it is perhaps the
greatest of God s gift. It is the monitor civilizations of arts and sciences . With technology, they can
get things done precisely, efficiently and fast. Wireless communication devices keep you connected
wherever you go. These things were developed due to greater inventions and creativity of their
designers. But on the other hand, there are still places or institutions that have a slow growth of
development when it comes to advancement of technology. And one of these that caught the
proponent s attention is the library.
Years ago, every library used paper based catalogs for finding books,... Show more content on

Summary Of Roy Baumeister s Four Main Needs Of Meaning
5. List and discuss the details of Roy Baumeister s four main needs for meaning. Each individual
that is brought into this world has some sort of meaning in their lives, it s up to each individual
to find their identity and place in this world. Roy Baumeister is one of the greatest social
psychologists to explain the self worth of each human. Throughout his career Baumeister has
created different variables on the definition of meaning. First, Baumeister explains that purpose
is the first topic of understanding meaning in one s life. The thought of one s person purpose is
their objective goals and/or the reason for which something exists or created. Basically, grasping
an understanding for your purpose in life can come at any age, and is hard to figure out at a
young age. Everyone s purpose in life is different, it s all about how you create your own path to
achieve your goals. Values is the second of the four main needs of meaning Baumeister
preaches. The importance of values is each individual s judgment of what s important in life.
Values hold a lot of worth to an individual. For example, one s values could be the belief of God
in their life, being in a happy, functional family, and that honesty and the truth is very important.
Some people don t need a million dollars to be content and happy in life, sticking and believing
their values can go a long way in someone s happiness. Third, is efficacy and the belief that one can
make a difference. Going throughout

The Illuminati
The Illuminati Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and
manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so
organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not
speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it (Woodrow Wilson, The New
Freedom 1913). As Woodrow explains the secrecy and power that are near and can be felt is in
reference to the Illuminati. The Illuminati are a secret and powerful society that date back as far
as 1771. It was said that the members and the rule was ended in 1785. However with so many

Persuasive Essay On The Border Wall
All through America s history it always had a presidential election every four years, and last
years presidential election campaign there were two leading candidates, so to ensure their
victory, they both made promises significant changes, creation. All through last year s campaign,
a candidate named Donald J. Trump made several promises, and one of his promises could
change the way of life in American. Mr.Trump won last years presidential election, and all eyes
were on him to the promise vowed to do if and when he is president. That one promise which is
opposed by six in ten Americans is that President Trump promised a big, beautiful wall that
would be placed on the Mexican and American border. President Trump Proposed that he could
construct the wall for 8 billion, but now it is known that wall will cost about $21.6 billion for the
wall and that the $21.6 plan doesn t include the $150 million a year to maintain. America shouldn t
Build a Wall along the US/MexicoBorder because of the high cost and how it will affect America s
economy, also thought the wall would keep out undocumented immigrant from crossing the US

economy each year, and lastly the environment that is near the border, and how it will be affected

Summary Of Abuse At Abu Ghraib
I asked several people, several times, where I could find a copy of the standard operating
procedures, or even rules and regulations, says Frederick. And nobody would ever provide me
with any or let me know where they were. The only thing they would do is just give me a pat on
the back and say everything will be all right (60 Minutes, Abuse at Abu Ghraib) This is Sergeant
Chip Frederick, one of the soldiers that has been convicted of conspiracy, dereliction of duty,
maltreatment of detainees, assault, and indecent acts. He served 8 years in militaryprison, in
Washington D.C. Even though Sgt. Frederick plead guilty, he claimed that no one involved in the

they needed to sometimes get rough with the inmates in order to remain in control and make sure
the prisoners listened to them (60 Minutes, Abuse at Abu Ghraib). In the end one of the biggest
causes of the scandal was lack of training and how understaffed the prison

The Nature And The Realization Of Conversion Essay
These two major pieces, the nature and the realization of conversion are reflected in what we
believe, our theology. So Luther further reminds us Conversion changes man so that he can accept
grace. (Tappert, 1959:537.83) But not just any old kind of grace, but the grace of God! Luther put
forth a very Lutheran theological understanding of conversion, in which we are saved by grace
through faith, which is a gift to us (humankind) from God. But God does all the acting; we are just
merely beneficiaries of God s grace and mercy.
For the conversion of our corrupt will, which is nothing else than a resuscitation of it from
spiritual death, is only and solely the work of God (just as also the resuscitation in the
resurrection of the body must be ascribed to God alone), as has been fully set forth above and
proved by manifest testimonies of Holy Scripture. (Tappert, 1959:537:87)
Tappert goes on to confirm,
how God in conversion changes stubborn and unwilling into willing men through the drawing of
the Holy Ghost, and that after such conversion, in the daily exercise of repentance, the regenerate
will of man is not idle, but also cooperates in all the works of the Holy Ghost, which He does
through us, has already been sufficiently explained above. Tappert, 1959:537.88)
So also
Again, when Luther says that man behaves in a purely passive way in his conversation (that is, that
man does not do anything toward it and that man only suffers that which God, works in

Essay On Health Inequalities
Over the most recent years there have been health advocates who have been paying serious
attention to the health disparities and the association between health, wealth and inequality. In the
United States (US), health inequalities can be viewed as a very important issue amongst it s
populations. There have also been ongoing debates, researches and documentaries highlighting such
comparisons and links between these disparities. Many consumers of the healthcare system have
experienced the inequalities with the provision of quality healthcare. After viewing the video series
Unnatural Causes: Is inequality making us sick? which was produced by Larry Adelman (2008),
brings more awareness on the divide which exist among the people who have wealth to those who
have low socioeconomic status and are living in poverty. There are several wealthy people who use
their power through politics, wealth and other means to provide care to it s citizens less than what
they themselves receive. Immigrants also experience the wrath of such practices based on their
status in society. There has been extensive research which have shown the influence that social
determinants have on the health... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can also be said that health inequalities can occur as a product of unnecessary differences
between people that affect powerful groups in our society. In an article by Steven P. Wallace
(2014) he notes, Efforts to promote health are not adopted evenly across populations, and groups
at the highest risk often are the last to benefit from the societal changes and new technologies (p.
7). As a practicing nurse, I have also witnessed such practices of inequality and disparities in the
healthcare system. I am of the belief that there needs to be stronger advocacy for the individuals

Juror 7 12 Angry Men
The movie 12 Angry Men is about a group of jurors that are trying to decide if a boy is guilty of
killing his father. Throughout the movie most of the jurors believe that the boy is guilty and
they believe he is guilty because these jurors are discriminating against the boy. They judge the
boy based on where he is from and his background rather than further discussing the evidence.
However one juror, juror eight, kept an open mind which promoted reason and he tries to show
this reason to the other jurors. He knows what it is like to be a boy at that age. His goal is to get
the other jurors to look more closely at the evidence and understand that a person s life is at risk.

All of the jurors are calm sitting around the table thinking it was an obvious decision, until juror
eight votes non guilty. The other jurors believe that the evidence given by the witnesses should
be enough to prove that the boy is guilty. They also refer to the boy s background. Juror seven
makes a statement that you could tell that the boy was a dangerous killer and the boy s record.
He mentions these things to try and convince the other jurors that they boy was guilty and there
was no need to further discuss the evidence. The jurors think the boy is dangerous because of
where he was raised. The boy was raised in a bad part of town where the jurors believed violence
was a way of life for people like him . These jurors did not have an open mind about the boy. They
do not want to look further into the evidence because they do not see the point in doing that. Some
jurors begin to walk around and this shows their aggravation of having to stay and further discuss
the evidence. At this point these jurors are not keeping an open mind and they are ignoring reason.

The And La Vraie Histoire De L Enfant Martyre
The early 20th Century was a time with a lot of changes and emergence of ideas. The story of
Aurore is an important part of the culture in the province of Quebec . Her tragedy has been
published in magazines such as le Soleil de QuГ©bec and La Presse , theater pieces were made
and movies. The book La Vraie Histoire de l Enfant Martyre is a brilliant use of fiction to describe
the history of a young child at the beginning of the 20th century. Throughout the book, the author
well defined the historical period, the place, the differences between genders and the importance of
religion.
The prolific author, AndrГ© Mathieu, was born in Saint HonorГ© De Shenley in Beauce in
1942 . The author studied in secondary school at the CollГЁge de Saint Raymond and he went at
the Г‰cole normale de Sherbrooke for two years . At the beginning of his career, he was a teacher
and a trader and later he became a full time writer . He always had published his own books, overall
he wrote 65 novels . His novel about Aurore, published in 1990, was adapted to cinema in 2005
by the filmmaker Luc Dionne . The movie was a success in the province of Quebec, more than 700
000 people went in theaters to see it . AndrГ© Mathieu was not really involved on the social

Hanukkah And St. Nicholas Day Summary
The residents of the annex use too much electricity and exceed their ration. Anne begins to feel
that Mr. Dussel is a strict disciplinarian and has too many opinions about etiquette. She writes that
it is very difficult being the badly brought up center of attention in a family of nitpickers.
Hanukkah and St. Nicholas Day come on almost the same day, so the annex holds two
celebrations. They light the Hanukkah candles for only ten minutes, since candles are in short
supply. For St. Nicholas Day, Father hides a basket filled with presents and a mask of Black
Peter in a cabinet. Mr. van Daan makes sausages to preserve the meat they have bought. Mr.
Dussel opens a pretend dental practice in the annex and comically attempts to fix Mrs. van Daan
s cavities. Anne tires of Mrs. van Daan s incessant complaints and is annoyed that Mr. Dussel
constantly tells her to be quiet at night but then wakes her up when he does his exercises at dawn.
Anne marvels at how diplomatic she has become while living in the annex. Mr. Kugler brings the

Techniques of Interrogation
Techniques of Interrogation
One of the best training programs to implement into the police department is the Reid interrogation
techniques. Interrogation and interviewing techniques became popular in 1947 by John E. Reid and
Associates. Joseph P. Buckley stated that The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogationis
now the most widely used approach to question subjects in the world (Buckley P. J., 2000). There
three parts to the Reid process for solving a crime. The first stage that should be taking is to collect
and analyze relative information from the crime scene thing that offers insight to the possible
suspect and determine the direction an investigation should take. The second stage of the process
interviewing people of interest using Behavior Analysis Interview (BAI) (Buckley P. J., 2000). The
Behavior Analysis Interview is a non accusatory process that allows detectives to interview a
suspect using a question and answer procedure to provoke a suspect to show non verbal truthfulness
or deception. The third stage, if the offender has not admitted to the crime an accusatory
interrogation is administered (Leave no marks, 2007). The Reid interrogation technique is believed
to be a fail proof technique ,however, there are some reservations against using this technique on
juvenile offenders (Constitutional Law(n.d). Implementing the Reid technique into the police
departments learning curriculum will truly

Olaf s Transformation
There are many stories of Olaf told by the people from his village. There is a story about Olaf
defeating a dragon in face to face combat to protect his village or him racing down a mountain of
lava. But this is the story of how Olaf got his shield. Long time ago, Olaf was a simple shepherd,
living in the mountains above his village. He was very well known for being the kindest man
anyone had ever met. He always had a smile on his face. Tales about him say he could chop down
trees with his bare hands, and that strength was useful while helping others. Every time someone
was in trouble, Olaf was there to help. He ripped trees from the roots to stop river flow, to save
drowning goats, and he put out fires burning the village all on his own. He... Show more content on

troll roared from deep within the vault. He had a giant club, about the size of a tree. The troll
charged like a frantic bull. Olaf wasn t worried, he stood his ground and put the little boy behind.
The troll bashed Olaf with his club, but Olaf did not shift from his position. The troll was big
and strong, but he was no match for Olaf s might. Olaf grabbed the club with one hand, and
crushed it with the sheer force of his palm. He picked up the troll and spun him around like a
helicopter, before hurling him deep into the mountain. The troll was defeated, and the boy was
rescued. But then suddenly the ground began to rumble and shake once again, had the troll
returned? No, the vault, it was crumbling apart! As Olaf cut his way through the mountain, he had
weakened the structure, and now it was caving in. The ceiling began to decay, Olaf covered the
boy with his back. With no obvious way out, Olaf grabbed the ice covered door, and held it up like

moves and holds as they built the match to it s climax. In this type of wrestling, the competitors
had replaced the generic moves with high impact moves, steel chairs, barbed wire, wooden tables,
and jumps and falls that resemble movie stunts.
This new type of wrestling has been criticized as being just as dangerous to an athlete s health as
steroids were to them in the past. This type of wrestling has caused many of the upcoming wrestlers
to become myths and legends before they even make it to television.
One great example of this is a wrestler known as Mick Foley. Foley never had physique or looks to
be a professional wrestler. Instead, Mick had a high threshold for pain and a great sense of
humor. For Mick this ended up being a winning combination in the world of wrestling. He went
on to become one of the most beloved stars of all time but not before 17 years in wrestling
destroyed both his body and mind. Mick s list of career injuries is like a lesson in human anatomy.
He has incurred a broken his cheekbone, jaw ,right wrist, nose (twice), left thumb, five ribs, and left
toes. Mick has also seperated his right shoulder, herniated two

Explanations Of Dreaming Research Paper
Dreams, something that most of us see in our daily basis. It is defined as a series of images, ideas,
emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. But
what is the real meaning of a dream ? There are three main explanations of dreaming: unconscious
wish fulfillment theory, dreams for survival theory, and activation synthesis theory.
In 1990 Sigmund Freud proposed the unconscious wish fulfillment theory he viewed dream as
unconscious wishes that dreamers wish to see fulfilled. Dreams are subjected to each person but
there are common elements often occurring in everyone s dream. Nightmares unusually frightening
dreams, occur fairly often. However, Freud developed two content of dreams manifest and latent.
Manifest, visible to the mind impersonates the latent content, the hidden meaning of a dream.
Because the underlying wishes are threatening to the dreamer, they are hidden in the dream s
storyline. However many rejected Freud s prospect because they believe that the direct, overt action
of a dream is the focal point of its meaning.
The dreams for survival theory is an idea that dreams help us to keep information that is critical to
surviving in our everyday life. dreaming provided a mechanism that permitted the processing of
information 24 hours a day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allan Hobson proposed neuroscience perspective(all the sciences) of the dream, the activation
synthesis theory explains that dreams are a result of the electrical energy that the brain produces
during REM sleep, possibly as a result of changes in the production of particular neurotransmitters.
The electrical energy randomly triggers the memories stored in the brain because the brain tries to
make sense of neutral activity that happens during sleep. The brain tries to put the event that
occurred in chronological order to make a logical story filling in the gaps to produce a rational

The Importance Of The Land Of Opportunity In America
Land of Opportunity for Everyone. The United States is a very diverse country, which makes it
the most unique out of every other place in the world. What helps this wonderful country of
opportunity become what it is to this day is because of the immigrants who traveled here.
Coming from a family of immigrants I know first hand what my grandparents and parents had to
go through to earn the life they gave me today. Immigrants are an important part in our society.
They do the work that most people don t want to do. As in, work in factories, construction sites,
and on farms. Immigrants help run a high demand country, so why get rid of them? They have a
purpose here. Everyone around the world knows that America is the Land of Opportunity .
People work so hard just to come here and start a new life. They all want to experience the
American Dream . To us, this is a normal lifestyle. If you look at immigrants situations closely,
you see their country s trouble and how over there they have it much worse. Wouldn t you want to
give them an opportunity where you and they know is better? So many countries in Europe are
having a hard time and people want to escape that and move to the States to start fresh. My
grandparents moved to Chicago from Poland when my mom was 19. They worked tremendously
hard to make enough money to make sure they were set for the future. They are lucky that they got
to come here and turn their life around and make sure that my brother and I didn t have to

The negotiation period is the most crucial part of the lease extension process and you are within
your right to turn down or counter offer any price proposed to you. You have up to two months
after receiving offer to send back a counter offer in order to try and get a price that is better
suited to you. After a counter offer has been sent it will signal the opening of the negotiations
between a freeholder s party (yourself and your solicitor) and a leaseholders party (he or she and
their solicitor). If both parties cannot come to a conclusion then a Valuation Tribunal will be

Nathaniel Hawthorne s Puritan influences
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a family that possessed prominent Puritan ancestors, and the
shame he experienced as a result of their actions, as well as his odd fascination with them, had a
significant impact on his life and his writings. Though it would be an overstatement to say that
Hawthorne s knowledge of the Puritanway of life was his only source of inspiration, this
knowledge was certainly influential as it is often reflected in the majority of his work. Born in
Salem, Massachusetts in 1804, Hawthorne was born in a town whose Puritan past is well known
as a result of the infamous Salem witch trials. Though he was born well after the time of the
Puritans, growing up in a town so steeped in Puritan history is likely why... Show more content on

One important, though briefly mentioned, symbol of Hester and Dimmesdale s growth occurs
when Pearl receives a golden chain from a shipmaster. This chain is described as becoming a part
of her. The chain itself can be seen as a symbol of the golden link between heaven and Earth.
When Pearl takes and wears the golden chain, it is shown that she, and her parents, have been
redeemed because they have learned so much as a result of their sin (Manheim 3). The Scarlet Letter
was surely inspired in part by Hawthorne s Puritan ancestors as he was criticizing their cruelty
by displaying Hester and Dimmesdale as kind people who made a mistake and became better
people as a result. The novel also has a more modern lesson because being overly critical of
others is a problem that has always plagued humanity. This is part of the reason why The Scarlet
Letter is such an important work of American literature as its comments on a harsh society are
still fairly relevant. In addition to his many novels, Hawthorne wrote many short stories like The
Minister s Black Veil. Published in 1836, The Minister s Black Veil is about a minister named
Reverend Hooper who begins to wear a black veil over his face. Throughout the story the
townspeople are frightened by his actions and the reason why he is wearing the black

Deception In Open Window
As I walk through the pen of colts I am very particular on the ones I choose to add to my string of

deception that goes around in our lives. Deceptions is basically something or someone who is
deceiving or tricks you. Horses are a great example of deceptionbecause you pick the one you are

Barack Obama s President Of The Democratic National...
Michelle Obama is arguably one of the most favorably viewed public figures in America.
Throughout her husband s presidency, she used her role as first lady to raise support for military
families and advocate for healthy eating. As so, she had a considerable impact on the 2016
election and used her influence to back the campaign of Hillary Clinton. At the Democratic
National Convention she gave an address in which she reflected on her time as first lady and urged
the audience to give their support to Hillary Clinton. Michelle was effective in her speech through
her appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos.

Michelle told the audience, We as parents are their most important role models. And let me tell
you, Barack and I take that same approach to our jobs as President and First Lady because we
know that our words and actions matter, not just to our girls, but the children across this country.
Michelle established ethos here on the assumption that she and Barack Obama have been effective
in parenting and in leading the children of America. The parents in attendance would be more
inclined to approve and agree with her message given she has had the same experiences parenting
that they have had. Although Michelle s appeal to ethos in light of her parenthood was unexpected,
her references to her political experience in order to persuade the audience toward voting for
Hillary was not. Regardless, both strategies were effective in establishing the fact that she is
qualified to recommend the next President of the United States.
Early on in her speech, Michelle presented her appeal to pathos. She played on the emotions of
the audience made up partly of parents who relate to her own fears that she has for her children
as well as her pride in them. Michelle recalled of the Democratic National Convention eight years
ago, I also told you about our daughters, how they are the heart of our hearts, the center of our

much the world is different. In the sense that globalization can influence us in terms of thinking,
because we thought at home differently than when we are in another country, and we have to think
and act differently.
We could read above how the globalization of the pop industry influences the world, the young
generation s world that movies and TV shows dictate to the world how we live and dress. The
world of music I want to talk about it and about how music affects globalization. After all, every
nation and people has and has the roots of musical style and sound (its folk music) but the
tendencies of the new world are changing everything and the US is one of the biggest industries
that influence it. We remember how the first emo, Goths and other fans of these themes appeared.
And the fact that music affects us on our feelings, because under every mood we listen to different
music. When sad we listen to the sad and etc. Everyone has his own idol which we end up trying
to please. As a result, the younger generation forgets the style and sound that was inherent in its
people. I also want to touch on the theme of books that foreign books have become

Mary Rowlandson And Franklin s Views On Western Society...
When the colonists arrived to the new world, they were blind to the problems before them. They
were in a time filled with thematic tribulations and conquest. They came across a group of people
they never knew or seen before; they called them Savages or Natives. Various encounters with the
Native Americans were documented with both negative and positive connotation. During this
period of trial and error, time with the Natives seemed often terroristic and peaceful. In various
colonial texts several authors have documented their experiences with the Native Americans, and

In addition, association with the Natives was just another obstacle the colonists had to face.
Rowlandson s publication gives a time stamp on how difficult relations with the Native
Americans were from a colonial perspective. Time period was so important in Rowlandson s case
because her story this gave first insight to issues of the colonial perspective of the Natives. Before
Rowlandson, there was no actual documentation of a front row seat to the world of the Native
Americans. For example, during Rowlandson s fourth remove she witnessed the death of a
pregnant mother and the child (264). Imagine hearing this for the first time as a colonist;
immediately an automatic biased opinion occurs. In Rowlandson s case, there was more corruption
and devilish behavior that clouded the good. Whereas in Franklin s distribution of his seventeen

years after America s independence. It would be assumed that during Franklin s time the colonists
would have some kind of system in order to deal with the Natives. Instead more mischief continues
and conflict between the Natives and colonists increase. The establishment of a biased opinion still
sits in the hearts of the colonists, however on Franklin s account there is a change. For instance,

Islamic Legal Reformers Of The Twentieth Century
I. Introduction As Talal Asad has noted, religion is by no means disappearing in the modern
world, and, [i]f anything is agreed upon, it is that a straightforward narrative of progress from the
religious to the secular is no longer acceptable. (Asad: 2003: 1.) At the same time, and in relation
particularly to the contemporary rise of Islam, [t]he question of secularismhas emerged as an object
of academic argument and of practical dispute. (Ibid.) The common view is that Islam and
secular modernism constitute a duality, forever at odds, while others argue that the religious and
the secular are a false duality and are indeed mutually constitutive of each other. (Agrama: 2).
Viewed either way, the resurgence of Islam gives rise to important questions regarding its
relationship to the secular modern state. In this short paper, I propose to engage with the works
of two Islamic legal reformers of the twentieth century: Mohammed Abduh s classic Theology of
Unity , first published in 1897, and Ahmad Safwat s lesser known article, The Theory of
Mohammedan Law, published in a British law journal in 1920. Though quite different, both works
are emblematic of this period in Islamic history when traditional Islamic law struggled to identify
its proper role with respect to the increasing power and transcendence of the modern secular state.
Moreover, each work is representative of two views of Islam and secular modernism and represent
the genesis of both

Chinese Impact On Australian Federation

To what extent did the Chinese population impact on Australia s federation
The Australian Gold rush days had brought may immigrants from all over the world to Australia.
Many of the migrants who joined the goldrush left their families and their homeland behind. This is
particularly difficult for the Chinese because they come from a traditional culture that focused
greatly on family and their village. Most Chinese men who came to New South Wales were not for
individual fortune but came for their family. The Chinese immigrationshaped and influenced
Australian policy for over a 100 year, which became one of the driving factors for the Australian

Mark Twain s story, The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Bret Harte s short
story, The Outcasts of Poker Flat is both works in the Western genre and portrays culture in the
West. However, both stories being similar in setting, the two stories are still very different.
Both of the stories the Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and the Outcast of poker Flat
took place in early 1800s and in a gold mining town. Jim Smiley a character of the story Notorious

One of the examples of Twain s exaggeration is when Wheeler describes Smiley. He says that he
would bet on anything, if he bet on how far a bug would go, he would follow that bug to
Mexico. This gives the story a very humorous tone. In this story a feeling of regionalism is seen
too because Smiley finds pride in his frog being the best in his area. Whereas Harte does not use
humor as his main element to present the West, instead he uses comic relief. In Harte s story, the
citizens of Poker Flat mining camp have decided to rid the county of trouble makers, and exile a
gambler Mr. John Oakhurst, prostitutes the Duchess and the Mother Shipton, and a drunken thief
Uncle Billy. The exiles must find shelter and head for the next camp, Sandy Bar which is located
further into the mountains. Sandy Bar is a day journey and the banished have very few Supplies,
plus it is winter, and snow is expected. Harte chooses to use sarcastic narrative to emphasize the
direness of the group s situation, plus, to emphasize the lack of the group s propriety and common
sense. One example of Harte s humorous, sarcastic narrative is the line, Mr. Oakhurst seldom
troubled himself with sentiment, still less with propriety; but he had a vague idea that the situation
was not fortunate. Another example would be, but they were furnished with liquor, which in this

Meg Rosoff and How I Live Now Essay
Meg Rosoff, author of How I Live Now, used external and internal conflict as well as mood to
portray the theme, that together nothing bad can happen. Rosoff put together these elements in
her novels to teach her readers this lesson. Rosoff is described as a cross over writer and does
not reflect on the cultural dumbing down, where adults tend to lose themselves in a childish
fantasy where book sare written for the teenage group of kids. In Boston Massachusetts during the
late 1950 s Med Rosoff was born. Rosoff was born into the Ashkenazi heritage to her mother and
father. Her father a former surgeon, worked at Harvard University teaching medicine. Her mother
was a psychiatric social worker. Together they all lived in the suburbs of... Show more content on

published in 2007and won two awards. These awards were the 2007 Costa Children s Book
Award and the 2008 Carnegie Medal (Penguin). Rosoffs genera of work is fiction. Her novels
most relate to young adults such as teenagers. Rosoffs novel How I Live Now is first person point
of view. In this novel Daisy is the narrator. The setting of the story changes a couple times
throughout the novel. Though the setting changes the main setting changes from quiet and content
to hectic due to the soldiers, But no one was happy now, and there were a lot of stupid brave
country folk armed with duck hunting rifles taking pot shots at tanks and most of the time getting
slaughtered for the trouble (Rosoff 113). Finally at the end of the book everything goes back to
being quiet and content again, mainly because the war is over at that point. The major conflict of
How I Live Now is in the form of man verse society. Daisy, as well as her cousins, has to face
society. As they all are trying to

The Sandwich Generation Essay
Amy Tan begins by announcing, I am not a scholar of English...I cannot give you much more than
personal opinions on the English language and its variations in this country and others. How does
this opening set up your expectations for the rest of the essay? Why do you think she chose to
begin by denying her own authority?
The introduction Tan decided to use presents the reader with a strong sense of the kind of
individual she is. By saying I am not a scholar of English , Tan is revealing how humble she is.
Amy Tan has written many novels and essays (some of which have been nationally recognized).
Yet, she starts off her essay by stating that this is just a product of her opinion and that it is in no
way superior to any others opinion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a writer, this exposure to all of these Englishes has affected her greatly. She no longer focuses
on writing to the readers who can understand English perfectly. Tan s understanding of the
multifaceted Englishes present in our nation allow her to get her message across to a larger
audience.
How does writing for a literary audience affect the language Tan primarily uses in the essay?
What kind of English do you think she believes her audience speaks? Why? Support your answer
with quotations from the text. Tan is aware that the literary audience will have a higher
expectation of her writing. Therefore, she does not write in the manner in which her mother
would speak ( broken English ). However, throughout her essay, any reader, whether an English
scholar or student would easily be able to understand what Tan is trying to convey through her
writing. In her essay Tan states: Fortunately, for reasons I won t get into today, I later decided I
should envision a reader for the stories I would write. And the reader I decided upon was my
mother. Tan s writing fully expresses the nature of her thoughts and

The Rain Forest Alliance And Brand Equity Via A Third Party
MKT310 A2 CMOSS
The rain forest alliance and brand equity via a third party speech:
Slide 1 (Title page):
Isn t it interesting how, as a business, we can make such a powerful impact on the environment
around us? From the amount of paper we use, to the lights that are left on in the office, and from
where we source our raw materials. Environmentally and socially responsible businesses are
becoming more predominant and popular amongst consumers. Not only can we lower long term
costs and risks, but it also engages employees on a different level that increases their skills and
knowledge to deliver products or services that are of high quality. Sounds ideal but how can we
achieve this ourselves?
Slide 2 (TRA background):
The easiest way that we can become more sustainable is through aligning the help of a third party
certifier such as The Rainforest Alliance (TRA) with our own business. We can make small
changes, and help the environment as well as increasing our profits. Great Britian: Parliament:
House of Commons: Environmental Audit, 2009 suggests that TRA is known for the work that
they do in sustaining agriculture, forestry, and tourism practices. In addition to playing a large part
in sustainability TRA also focuses on education of such problems and addresses climate change and

The Bank Of England Credit Report
Finical markets are needed to transfer funds from someone who has surplus funds to those who
needs money which has our economy expand and grow. The worlds focus has remained on the
financial position of the economy since the 2007 finical crash, many people and business are
still very cautious despite the improvements within consumer credit as banks are lending more
people money for mortgages but also businesses are starting to receive loans to set up business
as well. It is clear to see from the Bank of England Credit report that there have been
improvements for household and businesses but the economy has to improve a lot more to reach
the pre recession level. However it could be argued that with the improvement, many problems
will arise. For example when people become more confident moral hazard and information
asymmetry will cause problems in all sectors of the economy. Household Credit Conditions The
Bank of England credit conditions review shows that the number of people who are borrowing
against their assets, which is known as secure lending, has increased. The stock of secure
lending has increased to 3.5% on a three month basis since November 2015, but it has annually
increased from 2013 to 2015 by 2.5%. UK households have seen the benefit of this as mortgage
approvals have increased to 70,000 per month from September to November in 2015. The growth
rates on secured lending for UK households have been at their highest since 2008. However the
average remains below

The Golden Age Of Piracy Essay
The Golden Age of Piracy existed within the Atlantic World in the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries. It was during this time that the enterprise of piracy expanded and then abruptly ended.
During this time, privateering was also an active enterprise ebbing and flowing with international
conflicts. The line between the two was often blurred and created a political conundrum that
people on both sides found it difficult to navigate. The life of a pirate was appealing to many on
land and sea. The common conception of piracyportrays the enterprise as a disorganized anarchy.
This is not true, piracy was a complex entity within the Atlantic world. The enterprise of piracy and
privateering was complex as it navigated the seas, the Atlantic... Show more content on

These interactions show that piracy was more than criminal activity, it was a business. John
Appleby extensively covers the relationships between pirates and women. Some were married,
like Edward Teach (Blackbeard), who was married multiple times. A few became pirates to escape
marriage, like Stede Bonnet. Women had many roles in relation to piracy. They were receivers and
maintainers who conducted business with pirates: they bought plunder, provided lodging and safe
houses, and provided entertainment and food. (APPLEBY 5). The role of women grew along with
the growth of river piracy where they took part in brokering and distributing stolen plunder. These
discrete networks helped piracy succeed (APPLEBY 5). At pirate bases, such as Port Royal, women
were a source of entertainment and pleasure. Women were not immune from the violence and abuse
that accompanied pirates wherever they went. Evidence suggests female abuse by pirates peaked
during the Golden Age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when long distance plunder
emerged, weakening the links ashore. Piracy remained a largely male experience, with just a few
notable female pirates, such as Anne

Mackellar and AD Hope utilize imagery to highlight their view of the Australian landscape.
Personification
Mackellar and AD Hope use the poetic technique of personification to express their perspective
of Australia. In both poem the country of Australia is personified and referred to as her and is
given human qualities. By making Australia a her the audience can see the tender and caring
nature of a woman in the good events, like rain that makes things grow, after the destruction, like
fires. The audience can also associate the beauty with that of a woman. Some examples of
personification are I love her far horizons and all you have not loved her (Mackellar, 1908). My
Country uses personification to help the audience understand the beauty and nature of Australia.
AD Hope also gives Australia human qualities he refers to the land as a women they call her a
young country . Australia is Hope s criticism of general Australian society and the country itself.
Australia is mentioned as women beyond her change in life, a breast still tender but within the
womb is dry . He furthermore says that people may call Australia a young country, but they lie .
Australia to him is the last of lands, the emptiest AD Hope is trying to express that
of droughts and flooding rains .

How Young People React to Nazi Regime Essay
How Young People React to Nazi Regime
The youth of Germany were an important target for the Nazis. Hitler s aim was to indoctrinate the
young people as they were seen as an easy target. Hitler said, It is my great educative work I am
beginning with the young… With them I can make a new world. Hitler said this because he
knew that the future of Germany was lying in its children s hands. He wanted to ensure future
soldiers to fight and win in wars for Germany in order to regain and gain land. Hitler also found
the young people easy to indoctrinate as their minds were still young enough to be moulded. If the

499,862 were Jews. What is the percentage of aliens in Germany?
Hitler also had special school for students in which leading Nazis felt excelled others. These were
called order castles or Adolf Hitler schools . These would train boys for military situations in
order to keep a strong and eager army. In these schools the boys would take part in exciting
parades and learn how to be the perfect Nazi. They would also learn how to look after themselves,
to use teamwork, salvage work, Nazi theory, Sport, fixing bikes, and Morse code/tactics of war.
There were many aspects of the youth movements that appealed to the young people. They loved
being a part of something, and having a position to live for, as they were given a sense of
authority. The youth movements gave the young people a way of channelling their natural
rebelliousness. In 1932, the amount of Hitler youth members was 100,000 people, but by 1939,
8,000,000 people had joined. This was the largest youth movement the world had ever seen.
In 1939, it was compulsory to join a youth movement and so

My Proposed Plan For Life
Holley Lentner Events My Proposed Plan for Life in College While attending the University of
North Florida for my first semester, I have learned several new things about myself, like
empathy, through classes like Honors Colloquium. This class, in particular, has provided me
with experiences that will aid me further along in life, like our service projects. Additionally,
through the assignments of this course I have come to realize the skills and abilities that are in
need improvement in order for me to be successful at the occupation I intend to pursue. My
aspiration in life is to earn an honest living by providing health care to those in need of such
attention. With this career path, I believe that I will have both an exciting and rewarding
occupation. Helping those in need by promoting health and preventing disease is something that
I found interesting ever since I was little. For when I was younger, I was in the hospital quite
often for countless reasons, and knowing that I was going to be perfectly okay lead my
impressionable self to gain the utmost respect for those in the healthcare business and
eventually lead me to pursue a career in the field. Ultimately, I feel that this profession will allow
for me to contribute to society and in doing so, I remain confident that I will learn a great deal
from an occupation in health care. For a great man once said, Far and away the best prize that life

Wizard Of Oz Color Analysis
L. Frank Baum wrote an amazing story using colors to describe each part of Dorothy s journey to
Oz. The color changes throughout the story symbolized setting changes and different stages in her
journey. The colors also represented danger, beauty, power, mood and identified characters and
surroundings.
The story begins with the color gray. Dorothy s home, her dog Toto, the farm she lived on with
her Aunt and Uncle, the land and sky are all gray and dull. Once the house had been painted, but
the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray
as everything else (Baum, ch.1). Her hardworking relatives were too busy working on the farm to
have any fun with Dorothy. The best part of Dorothy s life is her best friend Toto, who is black
and the only thing that isn t gray in her life. A fast approaching cyclone is about to change Dorothy
s life forever.

Interim Report for Engineering Ethics and Emerging Technologies From the beginning of human civilization till present date, new innovations and technologies are introduced into the society to improve existing lifestyle or operation methods. However, as we approach the pinnacle of what current technologies allows us to research on, the rate at which new technologies are surfacing is gradually decreasing. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since many small scale farmers belong to low income group, this in turn represents a widening income gap along with social repercussions. Hence more attention should be paid to improving livestock conditions rather than developing in vitro meat. The government should be making it easier and more affordable to raise livestock. Possible solutions include setting up of government agencies to do research and development on rearing livestock. Agencies can share findings with the farmers and educate them on better methods to rear their livestock. Small scale farmers can then price their goods competitively and not be pushed out of the market by big players. Other solutions include requesting the supermarkets to support the local farmers by selling their goods. Singapore s Fairprice supermarket has been selling local poultry and eggs in support of the local industry. With such measures in place, we can ensure that traditional farms can keep pace with technology and not be phased out. Nanotechnology Nanotechnology can be broadly categorized under Molecular manufacturing (MM), which will be a significant breakthrough, comparable perhaps to the Industrial Revolution but compressed into a few years. • 3. A New Idea For The American Tax Code Essay This idea of reducing taxes to increase investment within the economy sounds like a good idea but hasn t lived up to its expectations historically. The idea of supply side economics wasn t a new idea for the American tax code. During the early 1920s, income tax rates were cut multiple times which averaged to a total of most rates being cut by a little less than half. The Mellon Tax Cuts named after Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon under Presidents Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. He believed that changes in income tax rates causes individuals to change their behavior and practices. As taxes rise, tax payers attempt to reduce taxable income by either working less, retiring earlier, reducing business expansions, restructure companies or spending more money on accountants to find tax loopholes. If executed properly tax cuts can actually benefit economic growth, data from the Internal Revenue Service(IRS) showed that the across the board tax cuts in the early 1920s resulted in greater tax payments and larger tax share paid by those in the higher incomes. As the marginal tax rate on the highest income earners were cut from 60 percent or more to just 25 percent, the amount that this tax group payed soared from around 300 million to 700 million per year. (See Figure 2) This sudden massive increase in revenue allowed the U.S. economy to rapidly expand during the mid and late 20s. Between 1920 to 1929, real gross national product grew at an annual average rate of 4.7 percent and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Summary Of Roy Baumeister s Four Main Needs Of Meaning 5. List and discuss the details of Roy Baumeister s four main needs for meaning. Each individual that is brought into this world has some sort of meaning in their lives, it s up to each individual to find their identity and place in this world. Roy Baumeister is one of the greatest social psychologists to explain the self worth of each human. Throughout his career Baumeister has created different variables on the definition of meaning. First, Baumeister explains that purpose is the first topic of understanding meaning in one s life. The thought of one s person purpose is their objective goals and/or the reason for which something exists or created. Basically, grasping an understanding for your purpose in life can come at any age, and is hard to figure out at a young age. Everyone s purpose in life is different, it s all about how you create your own path to achieve your goals. Values is the second of the four main needs of meaning Baumeister preaches. The importance of values is each individual s judgment of what s important in life. Values hold a lot of worth to an individual. For example, one s values could be the belief of God in their life, being in a happy, functional family, and that honesty and the truth is very important. Some people don t need a million dollars to be content and happy in life, sticking and believing their values can go a long way in someone s happiness. Third, is efficacy and the belief that one can make a difference. Going throughout ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Nature And The Realization Of Conversion Essay These two major pieces, the nature and the realization of conversion are reflected in what we believe, our theology. So Luther further reminds us Conversion changes man so that he can accept grace. (Tappert, 1959:537.83) But not just any old kind of grace, but the grace of God! Luther put forth a very Lutheran theological understanding of conversion, in which we are saved by grace through faith, which is a gift to us (humankind) from God. But God does all the acting; we are just merely beneficiaries of God s grace and mercy. For the conversion of our corrupt will, which is nothing else than a resuscitation of it from spiritual death, is only and solely the work of God (just as also the resuscitation in the resurrection of the body must be ascribed to God alone), as has been fully set forth above and proved by manifest testimonies of Holy Scripture. (Tappert, 1959:537:87) Tappert goes on to confirm, how God in conversion changes stubborn and unwilling into willing men through the drawing of the Holy Ghost, and that after such conversion, in the daily exercise of repentance, the regenerate will of man is not idle, but also cooperates in all the works of the Holy Ghost, which He does through us, has already been sufficiently explained above. There have also been ongoing debates, researches and documentaries highlighting such comparisons and links between these disparities. There are several wealthy people who use their power through politics, wealth and other means to provide care to it s citizens less than what they themselves receive. Anne begins to feel that Mr. Dussel is a strict disciplinarian and has too many opinions about etiquette. She writes that it is very difficult being the badly brought up center of attention in a family of nitpickers. Hanukkah and St. Nicholas Day come on almost the same day, so the annex holds two celebrations. They light the Hanukkah candles for only ten minutes, since candles are in short supply. For St. Nicholas Day, Father hides a basket filled with presents and a mask of Black Peter in a cabinet. Mr. van Daan makes sausages to preserve the meat they have bought. Interrogation and interviewing techniques became popular in 1947 by John E. Reid and Associates. Joseph P. Buckley stated that The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogationis now the most widely used approach to question subjects in the world (Buckley P. J., 2000). There three parts to the Reid process for solving a crime. The first stage that should be taking is to collect and analyze relative information from the crime scene thing that offers insight to the possible suspect and determine the direction an investigation should take. The second stage of the process interviewing people of interest using Behavior Analysis Interview (BAI) (Buckley P. J., 2000). The Behavior Analysis Interview is a non accusatory process that allows detectives to interview a suspect using a question and answer procedure to provoke a suspect to show non verbal truthfulness or deception. The third stage, if the offender has not admitted to the crime an accusatory interrogation is administered (Leave no marks, 2007). The Reid interrogation technique is believed to be a fail proof technique ,however, there are some reservations against using this technique on juvenile offenders (Constitutional Law(n.d). There is a story about Olaf defeating a dragon in face to face combat to protect his village or him racing down a mountain of lava. But this is the story of how Olaf got his shield. Long time ago, Olaf was a simple shepherd, living in the mountains above his village. He was very well known for being the kindest man anyone had ever met. He always had a smile on his face. Tales about him say he could chop down trees with his bare hands, and that strength was useful while helping others. Every time someone was in trouble, Olaf was there to help. The troll charged like a frantic bull. Olaf wasn t worried, he stood his ground and put the little boy behind. The troll bashed Olaf with his club, but Olaf did not shift from his position. The troll was big and strong, but he was no match for Olaf s might. Olaf grabbed the club with one hand, and crushed it with the sheer force of his palm. He picked up the troll and spun him around like a helicopter, before hurling him deep into the mountain. The troll was defeated, and the boy was rescued. But then suddenly the ground began to rumble and shake once again, had the troll returned? No, the vault, it was crumbling apart! As Olaf cut his way through the mountain, he had weakened the structure, and now it was caving in. The ceiling began to decay, Olaf covered the boy with his back. It is defined as a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. But what is the real meaning of a dream ? There are three main explanations of dreaming: unconscious wish fulfillment theory, dreams for survival theory, and activation synthesis theory. In 1990 Sigmund Freud proposed the unconscious wish fulfillment theory he viewed dream as unconscious wishes that dreamers wish to see fulfilled. Dreams are subjected to each person but there are common elements often occurring in everyone s dream. Nightmares unusually frightening dreams, occur fairly often. However, Freud developed two content of dreams manifest and latent. Manifest, visible to the mind impersonates the latent content, the hidden meaning of a dream. Because the underlying wishes are threatening to the dreamer, they are hidden in the dream s storyline. However many rejected Freud s prospect because they believe that the direct, overt action of a dream is the focal point of its meaning. When Pearl takes and wears the golden chain, it is shown that she, and her parents, have been redeemed because they have learned so much as a result of their sin (Manheim 3). Introduction As Talal Asad has noted, religion is by no means disappearing in the modern world, and, [i]f anything is agreed upon, it is that a straightforward narrative of progress from the religious to the secular is no longer acceptable. (Asad: 2003: 1.) At the same time, and in relation particularly to the contemporary rise of Islam, [t]he question of secularismhas emerged as an object of academic argument and of practical dispute. (Ibid.) The common view is that Islam and secular modernism constitute a duality, forever at odds, while others argue that the religious and the secular are a false duality and are indeed mutually constitutive of each other. (Agrama: 2). Viewed either way, the resurgence of Islam gives rise to important questions regarding its relationship to the secular modern state. In this short paper, I propose to engage with the works of two Islamic legal reformers of the twentieth century: Mohammed Abduh s classic Theology of Unity , first published in 1897, and Ahmad Safwat s lesser known article, The Theory of Mohammedan Law, published in a British law journal in 1920. One of the examples of Twain s exaggeration is when Wheeler describes Smiley. He says that he would bet on anything, if he bet on how far a bug would go, he would follow that bug to Mexico. This gives the story a very humorous tone. In this story a feeling of regionalism is seen too because Smiley finds pride in his frog being the best in his area. Whereas Harte does not use humor as his main element to present the West, instead he uses comic relief. In Harte s story, the citizens of Poker Flat mining camp have decided to rid the county of trouble makers, and exile a gambler Mr. John Oakhurst, prostitutes the Duchess and the Mother Shipton, and a drunken thief Uncle Billy. Some were married, like Edward Teach (Blackbeard), who was married multiple times. A few became pirates to escape marriage, like Stede Bonnet. Women had many roles in relation to piracy. They were receivers and maintainers who conducted business with pirates: they bought plunder, provided lodging and safe houses, and provided entertainment and food. (APPLEBY 5). The role of women grew along with the growth of river piracy where they took part in brokering and distributing stolen plunder. These discrete networks helped piracy succeed (APPLEBY 5). At pirate bases, such as Port Royal, women were a source of entertainment and pleasure. Women were not immune from the violence and abuse that accompanied pirates wherever they went. Evidence suggests female abuse by pirates peaked during the Golden Age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when long distance plunder emerged, weakening the links ashore.
