1. Music video analysis
Young Fathers-Romance
Cinematography
There is a split screen used
throughout the duration of the
video which is used to illustrate
the separation between the two.
You can notice that the right
screen is slightly darker than the
left to show the two sides to
their relationship. The two
cameras are positioned at
slightly different angles creating
a stereoscopic effect this is done
to highlight the different points
of view of each partner. It is also
quite disorientating for the
viewer conveying the confusion
some may feel in relationships.
Narrative
The video follows the ups and downs of the
complicated relationship of a couple. However
rather than explicitly show these actions their
emotions are connoted through certain
actions for example when she holds the axe
across him showing her fierce love for him.
Later on the video we see the man walking
alone juxtaposing the emotions in the earlier
exhibited in the earlier scenes.
2. Setting
The video is set in two main locations
the first a bright white wall which
used to make the audiences focus on
the actors subtle emotions. The
second is a suburban town that looks
fairly bleak which matches the
somewhat melancholic tone of the
song.
Clothing & Appearance
In the section of the video where we see the couple
they are both topless, this is most likely done to
emphasise their intimacy and raw emotions. Later in
the video when he is with the rest of the group they
are wearing trendy clothing that seem to be rock
influenced than hip-hop which is to be expected of
their experimental style.
Editing
The editing of the video is in time with the drums rolls of
the song changing the shot on each one. At certain points
in video the video is scrambled to show the
disassociation he feels when he is away from his partner.
