2. THE NARRATIVE
The narrative of the short film 'I miss you' is based upon a couple that is
inferred to have broken up and the young man is reflecting upon their time
together by various flashbacks of their best memories, including the first time
that they met.
Voice overs indicate to the audience that he is not over the break up and that
he does in fact miss her. This is apparent by the scenes of him in the
present portraying him crying and how he is going to cope for the future and
his own personal welfare.
3. TITLE SEQUENCE
The title sequence is shown at the end of the short film just before the
credits begin. With the title of the short film named 'I Miss You', the title
sequence appears as the voice over of the male states "I miss you" creating
a sad and heart provoking tone for the audience as the narrative is not
a 'happy' ending.
4. MISE EN SCENE
Set Design- the props used within the short film are all used effectively such
as the popcorn on the cinema date and the cigarettes and alcohol bottles at
the party to demonstrate the atmosphere the characters are in and amplify
the mood.
Lighting- throughout the majority of "I Miss You" the lighting is bright
and lacks many shadowing to give emphasis on the memories being a sense
of happiness for the young man. The contrast in lighting as he states he
misses her clarifies he is upset from the break up as the lighting is darker.
Space- Space is used creatively in the short film as when he is on his
own there is a large area around him that is empty to demonstrate he is
alone and has nothing after the break up. A sense of isolation.
Costume and Hair/Makeup- In the memories the young man is
dressed smart and has a fresh look which juxtaposes to the break up as he
wears a baggy white shirt and has a messy beard.
5. EDITING
The order of shots within 'I Miss You' work effectively as the flashbacks of the
memories leading on from one another signify a happy and loving
relationship which the couple created a lot of memories together.
Having the shots of how the young man has deteriorated in happiness and his
looks after the previous shots of the flashbacks demonstrates a
clear juxtaposition in the mood and amplifies the narrative of the
film that it hurts that the relationship has come to an end.
The voice overs throughout the film help move the narrative and outlines to
the audience a sense of what has happened. It gives the narrative a personal
tone also.
6. SETTING
There are various settings within the short film:
Party- the party is a significant setting within the film as it is where the couple first meet. As
they are both young, the setting being a party is realistic and is stereotypical for a place that
young couples may first meet.
Cinema- a cinema is a great setting as it is an obvious way to portray that the young couple
are in a sense becoming interested in each other in contrast to the previous party scene
leading the audience to believe they are going to fall in love.
His bedroom- The young man's bedroom demonstrates he is alone as it is after the break up
and signifies a sense of isolation and him shutting himself off from the world.
All of the settings within 'I Miss You' are significant to the narrative and all portray a strong and
meaningful message to the audience. Most you can infer.
7. THE CREDITS
The credits match with the editing and the narrative of the film perfectly with
the credits flashing from one to the other with a flash, this shows a flashback
tone and leaves the mood of the film on going.
The font of the text is subtle and in white to not over throw the audience and
possibly give a 'comic' look to the short film.
The colours are darkened purples and pinks and blues to give the romantic
feel to the audience yet it is a darker tone due to the couple being broken up.
