ROMANCE
INTRODUCTION OF
MAIN CHARACTERS.
One of the very first scenes of most romance film trailers is the shot where the
two main characters meet. It shows them with close eye contact and
soft/slow music. This automatically shows the audience the genre as this tells
us that these two character’s are going to fall in love at some point the
music and eye contact quickly foreshadow this as it is a very stereotypical
thing of romance trailers.
KISSING SCENES
The first establishing moment of two character’s being a couple is in
the scene when they first kiss on camera. This shot is usually a medium
shot showing both character's from a side angle.
A shot of a couple kissing can and is shown in many genre’s of films,
what makes them iconic in the romance genre is that the editing is
usually slowed down, a slow non-diegetic song played and the
camera panning around/following the couple, forcing all focus on
them two and the relationship/emotions they share.
FRIENDS AND FAMILY
The scene where one character meets the other’s parents or family is a huge
part in the storyline of a film. It’s at this scene where we stereotypically realize
there is a connections between the couple. In both examples the more willing
character is on the left of the frame showing that in these scenes they are the
more dominant ones.
CLOSE UP OF FEMALE
This scene appears in every romance I’ve watched. It’s purpose it quite simply
to show the female’s beauty through the eyes of their lover.
This scene gives us an insight as to his feelings towards her and shows the raw
emotion between them.
