2. STATISTICS
What is your biological sex?
Male
Female
60% male and 40% female carried out my questionnaire, more males
carried out the survey than females due to the fact that males were more
keen to take part suggesting that they are more interested in music
magazines, this evidence backs up my research which states that the
target audience for rock music is predominantly males.
3. What is your most favoured genre
of music?
Rock
Punk Rock
Pop
Rap
The most popular genre of music was Punk Rock the results show that 50% of
the public favour this genre. Not far behind this, was the genre Rock with 40%
of the public in favour of this genre. Equally the rest of the public chose Pop and
Rap as their favoured genre of music at 5% each. Over all these results show
that my selected genre choice (rock) would be successful as it is the most
favoured genre out of all the chosen categories present in my questionnaire.
Also due to the fact Punk Rock is the most popular genre, I have decided to
mainly use this type of Rock music in my music magazine seen as it has a
positive response from the public. Involving this type of rock would increase the
success of my music magazine, the biggest way to make sure a magazine is
successful is to create a magazine that the public is going to read, so I need to
make the public interested in my music magazine as much as possible, which I
am going to ensure in a variety of ways.
4. How often do you purchase a
music magazine?
Never
Weekly
Monthly
Annually
The results show that 40 % of the public buy music magazines weekly and
40% of the public buy music magazines monthly, this shows that people
regularly spend money on music magazines. This allows me to conclude
that I should publish my music magazines on a regular basis, maybe even
release fortnight editions to suite all categories.
5. What price would you be willing to pay
for your music magazine?
0-49p
50p-99p
£1.00-£1.99
£2.00-£2.99
£3.00-£3.99
£4.00+
The results show that most people would be willing to pay £1.00-£1.99
for a weekly music magazine (50%). Also a lot of people said that they
would be willing to pay £3.00-£3.99 (40%) this shows that there are a
variety of different prices people are willing to pay. From these results I
am going to base the price of my magazine around £2.50 so that it
averages both popular prices. Also this gives me an indication before
creating my music magazine that there are different standards that
people are willing to pay for but I’m going to try compromise especially
because my magazine is going to be fortnightly, I don’t want it to be too
expensive as my target audience are young which means they recieve
lower income or are still attending education.
6. Which of the following artists/bands
would you want to read about in a
music magazine?
Bring me the horizon
Arctic Monkeys
System of the down
Paramore
Kasabian
You me at six
Blink 182
The results show that even though the favoured genre is Punk Rock
many people would still want to read about other types of rock bands
also. This might suggest that the public would like to read about a variety
of rock bands that are recently big in the music industry, they might be
interested in reading articles about popular bands that have recently
released albums and are well known, regardless of what type of rock
they produce. This allows me to decide that my music magazine will
cover a range of rock bands.
7. What would you like to see featured in
the music magazine?
News updates
Interviews
Gig guides
Surveys
Pictures
Posters
Reviews
Up and comings
Competitions
The results show that most of the public would like to see gig guides
featured in music magazines therefore in my music magazine I will
involve this type of information along with a variety of the different
features listed seen as the public picked them also, this will help make
my magazine please a variety of people.
8. Which of the following sections from a
contents page would encourage you to
read a music magazine?

Reviews of albums/downloads
Interviews with artists
Features on current bands

Film/Television/Video Game Reviews
Live Gigs/Festivals
The most popular were Reviews of albums/downloads and Interviews with
artists (both at 40%), on the basis of these results they are the two
sections that I am going to involve in my contents page more seen as they
encourage the public to read the music magazine the most.
9. Which of the following
music magazines would
you read?
NME
Q
Uncut
Kerrang
The most popular music magazine to read was Kerrang! with 50% of
people saying that they would read it, 30% of the public said that
they would read NME and 20% said that they would read Q. None of
the public said that they would read Uncut this shows me that its an
unpopular magazine. These results reflect peoples music tastes and
it allows me to identify what type of magazine style the audience like
best, due to the fact Kerrang! was the most popular I will try to
create a magazine with similar traits such as being untidy with a
edgy feel. Whereas I will avoid creating a music magazine with a
similar style to Uncut and Q, which have a clean cut layout.
10. Which of the following main
images on the cover would
encourage you to buy a music
magazine?
Male Artist
Female Artist
Female Group
Male Group
Mixed Group
60% of the public said that having a Male Group on the front cover would
encourage them to buy the music magazine. 20%
said that having a
Mixed Group as the main image would encourage them to buy it and
10% of the public each said that having a Female Artist or Female Group
as the main image on the front cover would encourage them to buy the
music magazine. On the basis of these results I have decided to have
my main image as a Male Group and if that image fails I have decided
as my back up plan to have my main image on the front cover of my
music magazine as a Mixed Group.
11. Would you access
websites or other
media platforms?
Yes
No
100% of the people I asked said that they would access websites or
other media platforms associated with a music magazine. These
results show me how important websites and other media platforms are
in today’s society, to attract an audience. Due to the fact the age of my
target audience are seen to be technophiles, it is essential that my
music magazine offers access to websites or other media platforms, to
receive information as well as receiving information from my music
magazine. It is important that I show evidence of website links on a
variety of pages in my music magazine.
