This document summarizes market research conducted to inform the creation of a new music magazine. An online survey of 25 people found that most respondents were male and read existing magazines like Kerrang and Mojo. Based on the survey results and analyzing circulation data, rock music was identified as the most popular genre among the target audience of young males. Focus group research with 8 rock fans validated this finding and provided additional guidance on desired content, stylistic elements, and a preference for text-based articles. The key takeaways were that the new magazine should focus on rock music and include insider interviews, tour information, and a simple color scheme with in-depth writing.
Leading transformational change: inner and outer skills

1. Observation
This is a photo I took for reference while doing market research on
already existing music magazine.
2. Online Survey
Previously in my research I did some secondary research by comparing the some media packs of music
magazines and pulling out some data from that, since that information might be bias, outdated and less
reliable I decided to go and carry out some primary research by making a online survey on survey monkey
and posting it on my Facebook. My responses peaked at 25 so I collected the data and put it all into tables.
Now I am going to review my results compare it to my secondary research and make some points about what
the data means. Then I will consult this data when making my own magazine.
From this
question I
found out
that 60%
who took
this survey
was male
and 40%
were
female.
This tells
me that the
information
I retrieve
from this
survey may
be bias
towards
males.
3. Online Survey
In this question I found out that its a pretty even split between
those who subscribe to magazines and those who have never
read one in there life. The ones who do read magazines are
(according to results) majorly young males, considering this
information I will aim my magazine at young males because with
them I will receive a higher chance of having recurring paying
customers.
In all classes people seem to subscribe to magazines the
majority of the working class read kerrang and mix mag,
the majority of middle class read uncut and mojo and
the majority of upper class read Q. Taking the results
from this question I will want to make my magazines
price to be aimed at the middle/working class.
4. Online Survey
In this question I asked the questioners to
rank there favourite genres from the ones
provided. It was pretty average across the
board but a few results seem to come up,
rock came 1st 68% of the time and jazz came
last 40% of the time .This tells me that I
should cover rock in my music magazine and
not cover jazz.
The results I have got is similar to the secondary
research I have, yet kerrang is a bit more popular in
mine this could be because the majority of people that
answer the questionnaire where young, or there could be
a trend in anarchistic behaviour and music tastes, but
this fits perfectly because if I want to aim my magazine
at young male middle class rock fans I can use kerrang as
inspiration.
6. Circulation StudyI chose to represent circulation by circles which are equivalent to the amount of circulation.
Looking at this data representation, and previous research, I can see that rock seems to dominate the
music magazine industry as it is higher in sales but this can not be my only proof. All thought looking at
circulation can give me a idea on how many are sold, it doesn't show me how many people actually read
the magazine because friends/families might share a copy. Unfortunately I couldn't find any record of
readership on the media packs or on the national readership survey website so I will have to make my
assumptions/conclusions based on circulation alone.
7. (I asked 8, 18 year old's who were fans of rock music and readers of kerrang and classic rock)
1. What would you like for content in a rock magazine?
I had a short discussion with the group about it and they all agreed that they all would really like to see insider
interviews with band members and people in the rock industry, news about new bands and maybe some music
charts specifically for Rock music. Also being concert and festival goers they suggested about tour details, and live
music details.
2. What stylistic elements do you think is important to include in a rock magazine?
They all were saying that they were fans of high contrasting colour schemes a like red black and white and they all
said they didn't want overwhelming colours or pictures and the simplistic theme was refreshing.
3. Do you prefer text based or picture based articles and why?
They said they are all avid readers and wouldn't really want picture based article and would rather have a large
amount of the articles be text based.
Focus group
After looking at my research I have decided to make a rock magazine as rock is very popular from what I found out from my
circulation study and my online survey and its my personal favourite two so ill find writing about it more enjoyable. I'm only
asking 3 questions for the group because I expect to get a large amount of information for each question. Here are the questions
and answers.
