1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary texts?
Following the creation of our finished trailer, we had to ensure that there were evidently
clear connections, such as the characters and the subject matter, between the film
trailer and the two ancillary texts, which are the film magazine front cover and the film
poster. This would therefore help to create an effective promotional film package as they
would all support the same genre and narrative of the film ‘Cloven’ by including details
such as codes and conventions of horror films and the exact same unique selling point.
These features are essential to include as they allow the film to expand by catching the
audiences attention in a variety of different formats, other than just moving images.
These two different forms of print are designed to keep the audience engaged and
interested in the new upcoming film and they also help to create a brand image. Over all
this will increase the effectiveness of the promotional film package as a whole. In this
presentation I am going to discuss how effective the combination of my film trailer and
ancillary texts are.
2.
3. The film title, ‘Cloven’ is featured on all of my products to create a brand image for the film. This is also based upon its Celtic style of
font, which correlates to its narrative. I made sure that the text of our film title appears exactly the same on all of my products, so that
the brand image is represented strongly. This allows my promotional film package to be extra conventional for marketing purposes as
a result.
We as a group decided to add a satanic symbol behind the text of our film title, to represent the genre of our film trailer as it is closely
associated with the devil. This also reflects the narrative of our film ‘Cloven’ as the character ‘Sam’ is taken over by this evil entity.
This is a conventional aspect as it is common trait of a promotional film package to have a set design for its title. This symbol is
present within our film trailer, such as the shot of the symbol smothered on the tent in blood and can be seen on my film poster.
Using the same logo and the same trademark of the Celtic styled font for all of my products, allows them to be easily recognised as
being associated with one another. This supports the idea that there are evidently clear connections between my film trailer and my
two ancillary texts meaning that the combination of them is very effective.
4.
5. The studio company name ‘Paladin’ is also another feature which can be seen throughout
my promotional film package, as it is present on the billing block for both my film trailer
and my film poster. Me and my group decided to add this feature to our billing block as we
felt that it would make our products consequently appear more professional and
conventionally successful as a result.
I believe that the studio company name present on our film trailer allows our product to be
as realistic as possible, as many real existing film trailers state the studio in which it was
produced. This aspect of our film trailer and our billing block is easily recognised, which
therefore helps the branding process of my promotional film package. This also shows
that there are clear links between my main film trailer and my ancillary texts.
6. Seen as the character ‘Sam’ is the unique selling point of our
film trailer, I decided to capture her within both of my images
present on my ancillary texts. However I decided to show the
actress of the character Sam on my film magazine front cover
instead, to show a softer side to her in comparison. This still
reveals the unique selling point of our film trailer seen as the
distinctive character the actress is playing draws the viewers
in, from her psychotic role.
Seen as ‘demonic possession’ is the main theme present in
our film trailer, I tried to include as many representations of
this as possible throughout my ancillary texts, so that they
appear conventionally effective. I did this by capturing the
poster image of the character Sam during the initial stage of
her possession, showing the main theme with the character
as a unique selling point. I also decided to make my film
magazine a horror issue so that it links in with the theme of
our film trailer.
By including these aspect to my ancillary texts therefore
meant that I had successfully produced an effective
promotional film package, seen as they’re all closely linked
with one another promoting the same features.
7. Sam, the character who becomes possessed by this evil entity, can be seen on both my film trailer
and my film poster. I decided to include this specific character on my film poster as I believe that she
is the most memorable character within our film plot and therefore is the most prominently enticing
character to use on a promotional device. I also decided to include an image of her as I believe that
she is the main character that represents the storyline of our film and therefore is a conventionally
strong aspect to use on a film poster.
This feature also evidently supports the idea that the combination of my main film trailer and my
ancillary texts is conventionally effective, seen as the character evidently promotes the film seen as
she is the unique selling point.

9. • The release date and the billing block were specific aspects of my promotional
film package that I kept identical for obvious justifications. By doing this meant
that me and my group had saved valuable time, as once we had created our
billing block for our film trailer we were then able to transfer our finished
creation to our individual film posters. This process was beneficial during the
creation of my promotional film package as it was consequently time effective.
• The date ‘04.09.15’ is used throughout all of my products so that they are kept
consistent as a result. Also other features such as logos, studio names and
credits are present in both of my billing block’s, so that my products were
therefore homogeneous meaning that the combination of them was strongly
effective. These aspects also added to the consistency of my products over all
and made sure that they didn’t vary in appearance or content as a result.
• The website of our film was also kept the same on my ancillary texts so that my
products were therefore portrayed conventionally as they supported one
another as a promotional film package. This evidently shows that the
combination of my products was successful seen as they promoted the same
aspects, enticing the audience in.
10. Conclusion
To conclude, I believe that I have created a successful and desirable
promotional film package, which has evidently clear connections and
representations from every aspect. I believe that I have achieved this
by trying to include as many themes as possible from my film trailer and
by including a variety of beneficial ideas based upon our film plot. I also
believe that I was able to maintain the code of enigma throughout my
promotional film package which adds the effectiveness of the
combination of these products. Over all the only aspect of my
promotional film package that I would change is the addition of the
satanic symbol near the text present on my film magazine front cover,
as I believe that this would represent the narrative of our film plot even
further.
