2. My Initial Draft of my Contents Page
This is my first attempt at
drafting the contents page
of my rock music
magazine; this draft is only
rough meaning that it isn't
necessarily the end
product. This contents
page may need
improvements when in the
development stage, I
might need to make a lot
of differences and
variations to this contents
page by adding a variety
of things to it or even
removing current things
from it. I have decided to
use the same colour
scheme as the front cover
of the music magazine
which is red, black, white
and yellow.
3. The Layout
For my contents page I have used a
carefully structured layout. I have
sectioned off specific areas of the
page where there is writing from
where there is images, so that it
looks more appealing and enticing
to the reader because it isn't
confusing and messy. It is very
basic and straight to the point. I
have decided to list the main
information in a column with it’s
page number placed next to it, so
that the reader can immediately
identify which pages they need to
turn to, to receive the information
they need. The layout easily directs
the reader to the specific
information they are looking for due
to the fact I have included headings.
I have kept to the codes and
conventions of a contents page by
including a variety of things such as
writing in columns, having images
and subsidiary images present on
the page, that link to articles inside
the music magazine.
4. Editors Letter
I have decided to make the editors letter present on the contents
page, I have done this because I feel that it allows the reader to
connect to the music magazine much more deeply and it allows a
relationship to be made between the magazine and the reader. It
allows the reader to familiarise themselves to the editor and the
editors personality. Even though only 10% of the public stated that
having an editors letter featured in the contents page would
encourage them to read the music magazine, I decided to include it
anyway as I feel it helps make the magazines relationship with the
reader much more stronger.
5. The results of my questionnaire stated that 40% of
the people I asked said that they would like to see
gig guides featured in the music magazine, so I
have included the heading gig guides in my
column of information so that the reader can
identify by looking at the contents page that it is
featured in the music magazine. This will motivate
the reader to buy and read the magazine. Lastly
the page number allows the reader to locate
themselves to this information, which will be very
useful to the reader.
6. The title ‘contents’ and the masthead are both in capitals to
highlight their importance and the effect they have on the music
magazine. The background of the banner is red to make the
masthead and the title stand out. I have included the masthead in
the contents page, it is situated on the left hand side of the banner
to make sure that the brand is advertised throughout the
magazine, it helps to make sure that the reader doesn't forget the
magazines name in the future, when they are choosing what
music magazine to buy.
I have decided to include the magazines website address to show the
reader that the magazine has multi-media platforms which is an indication
that the music magazine is growing bigger in the industry. I also decided
to make the website address present on the contents page as it attracts
my target audience, who are mostly young which means naturally they are
technophiles which means that they are enthusiastic about new
technology. It allows the readers to access the information in a variety of
different ways.
7. The Images
I haven't fully drawn the main image on
this draft copy of my contents page due to
the fact I haven't decided whether I want
my main image to be taken of the lead
singer of the band separately, or to have
one of the other band members alone or
even whether to take my main image of
the band as a whole. I have decided to
leave this decision for when I am in the
process of taking optional photos and then
I will decide which one is the best for the
style of my contents page. The main
image on this contents page will link to the
main image on the front cover of ‘Rage
City’ but it will be a different image of the
band, both of these main images link to
the main article of the band ‘Rage City’
which is the splash of the magazine. My
subsidiary images will be taken of other
bands that the rock magazine ‘Pitch’ has
interviewed or has an article on.
