2. GREEN DAY
This advert for Green Dayâs single âWake me up when September endsâ is featured in a music
magazine, it is aimed at Green Day fans but also whoever purchases the magazine. This advert is
likely to have appeared in a rock magazine as Green Day are a punk-rock band, also it means people
with similar music taste will be able to find out about the EP. The advert includes a photo of Billie
Joe Armstrong, the bands main singer in which he is singing into a microphone, from the way he is
looking up it seems the photo is a candid shot of him performing in a live concert. This photo would
appeal to the audience as they would be able to recognise Armstrong, intertextuality is also used
with the bands logo overlaying the photo as people will be able to recognise it from previous
albums. This page advertises both the single and the album âAmerican Idiotâ from which it is from.
The bottom half of the page advertises the EP and album. To advertise the album, buzzwords such
as âNo. 1â, this shows to the audience that the album is well received therefore they could be more
persuaded to purchase, also âFree DVDâ is an incentive to encourage people. Extra information about
the EP is given, for example the name of the 2 side tracks, this could encourage people into
purchasing the single as they will get more than one song. Overall the advert follows the colour
scheme of the front cover of American Idiot; red, black and white which creates synergy between
the two pieces; the colours also reflect the genre of rock which could create interest with any
readers of the magazine. The phrase âout nowâ is used, this shows that Green Day already has
released the album which âWake me upâŚâ features on, therefore if they people are already familiar
with the song they may be more likely to purchase the EP.
3. OLLY MURS
This advert for Olly Murs album âRight Place Right Timeâ would be likely to feature in a pop magazine or
possibly a tabloid magazine, as Murs is a well know celebrity figure. A mid shot of Murs is used, this
allows people to recognise him ,as he takes up the whole length of the page it also puts all focus on
him. Murs is well dressed in smart clothing which shows he cares about his image, the use of a medium
shot could reflect that he is a pop singer as it allows us to see his overall image, and image is a
important factor for pop singers. In the shot he is looking straight out to the audience, this creates a
connection with the audience. The colour scheme of the advert is simple consisting of burgundy, black
and blue; the use of blue as a background makes the Murs and the text standout as it is a neutral
colour. Buzzwords are used in the text, for example âno. 1 singlesâ, this shows that the songs off the
album have already been successful, therefore the album as a whole is likely to do well. The text also
mentions âFlo Ridaâ, another artist Murs collaborated with for one of the songs on the album; Flo Rida
is a well known R&B artist, therefore even if the audience is not a fan of the pop genre they may
recognise his name and listen to the album because of him. The name of Mursâ website âollymurs.comâ
is included at the bottom of the page, therefore if people want to find out more about the album they
can visit the site. The phrase âout nowâ is also used, this could show that the album already had a pre-
sold audience, and this is targeted at people other than his fans. The simplicity of the advert could be
because he is a pop singer, therefore much of the focus is on his image. Unlike many other magazine
adverts, this does not include a photo the album cover, this might mean that the audience could
struggle with recognising the album as they do not know what it looks like.
4. WRETCH 32
This advert for Wretch 32âs album âWretchrospectiveâ would likely be featured in a hip-hop magazine as
it fits the genre of music Wretch 32 makes. The advert includes a medium-long shot of Wretch, firstly
this shows to the audience who the artist is as they may not know who; it also allows us to see what he
is wearing, the style of clothing like a baggy white t-shirt and a silver chain hanging off his jeans reflects
that he is a hip-hop artist and the audience would be able to make this connection. The background of
the advert consists of graphic overlays for example a block of flats and birds. The artists name is written
in a font that reflects graffiti, also on Wretchâs neck black ink, similar to that of graffiti spray is dripping
onto his t-shirt, this overall urban vibe could appeal to a hip-hop audience as it reflect aspects of the
genre. The name of the album is across the middle of the page, therefore it stands out but also acts as a
way to separate the images in the top half and the text on the bottom. This advert was featured in
magazines before the album was released, which could reflect that it is his first album, so seeing this
advert could prompt people to listen to his music that is already released to become familiar with him.
The advert also features names of other artists such as âChipmunkâ and âGhettoâ, the audience may
recognise these artists and therefore have more of an interest in the album. In the bottom right corner
logoâs of places such as HMV are featured, this shows to the audience where the album can be
purchased or listened to online. In the bottom left corner, a picture of the album is included, from this
we can see that the advert and album cover are the same image, this creates synergy between the two
pieces, therefore the audience would easily recognise the album from this advert.
