2. Pan-American Rural Health
Despite huge waves of urbanization in recent years, 120 million individuals, 20% of Latin America s
population, still reside in rural areas (PRB, 2014). Many of these people live in remote, mountain or
rainforest communities in the Andes Mountains or the Amazon Basin and typically live agrarian
lifestyles. However, the definition of what constitutes a rural area verses an urban area varies between
countries. For example, Venezuela defines an urban area as a population center with more than 1,000
inhabitants while Argentina defines an urban area as a center with more than 2,000 inhabitants, and
Peru considers any center with more than 100 dwellings as urban (United Nations, 2005). Regardless
of the definition, rural populations in the region ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, there are many other contributing factors to poor health in rural areas beyond direct
health care impact. The Pan American Health Organization states that in 2015, 97% of urban Latin
Americans compared to only 84% of rural Latin Americans had access to an improved drinking water
source, meaning water protected from outside contamination, especially concerning fecal matter.
Additionally, regarding improved sanitation, when excrement is sufficiently separated from human
contact, 88% of urban populations had access while only 63% of rural populations had the same. Fifty
one percent of rural citizens still use solid fuels, such as wood, dung, or charcoal, for cooking and
heating their homes compared to just 8% of urbanites. The indoor air pollution from these fuels put
users at increased risk of many respiratory diseases and other health complications (PAHO, 2016).
Furthermore, rural cultures often value self sufficiency and independence, leading to less utilization of
available health care services (Strasser, 2003). Lower levels of education compound this issue as
people may have a poor understanding of what resources are available as well as how and when to use
them. These factors combine to put rural residents at higher risk for many health complications and
lower the overall health status of the

3. How Did Winslow Homer Influence Art
One of the most highly regarded painters of the nineteenth century is Winslow Homer. From his birth
in Boston, Massachusetts, he began learning about art. Homer s mother was a water color artist and
taught him a lot of the techniques he used in his works. The Snap the Whip painting is probably
Homer s most famous painting and exemplifies the ideals he tried to get across. All in all, Homer was
one of the most influential painters in American history. Winslow Homer was born in Boston,
Massachusetts on February 24, 1836. From an early age Homer showed interest in art. His mother was
a watercolor painter and taught him many of her techniques. Growing up in Cambridge,
Massachusetts Homer learned the aspects of being a printmaker. After living in New York for a few
years, he began to practice oil painting. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A common theme for Homer was to make paintings that were reminiscent of the simpler times before
the Civil War and industrialization period. This is evident in one of Homer s most famous paintings,
Snap the Whip . This painting shows schoolboys, just released from the small local schoolhouse,
enjoying nature and playing outside. His paintings also had a common theme of representing how the
nation had become unified once again with the conclusion of the Civil War. In his painting Snap the
Whip , you can clearly tell this from the locking of arms between boys representing teamwork. Oceans
and bodies of water were also a common theme in his art works. You can see this quite clearly in his
1876 painting Breezing Up . Homer s most common art media was Oil Paint. Almost every single one
of Homer s famous paintings is painted in oil paint. Overall, Homer had many influences in his work,
but the importance he placed on simplicity before the complex post Civil War industrial period is ever
present in all of his works. (Vaughn: Encyclopedia of

Correctional environment, jails, and prison are facilities in which inmates are confined while being
denied several rights and freedom as authorized by the States laws and regulations. Individual charged
with criminal activities are forcibly confined in these facilities as a means of punishment. Since, the
offender are humans with fundamental human rights as well, they need security and thus should be
protected against insecure circumstances that may harm them (Maryland Maryland, 2013).

detecting makeshift weapons those violent inmates could use to harm colleagues. Another device is
the Pharma Jet, which is needle free injection system that works best in immunizing and medicating

The Correctional Biometric Management system is new technology that new inmates are put through.
The system can detect the inmates using the retina of the eye and the fingerprints. This identification
system has helped in identifying escaped inmates. The fingerprints unlocking of gates, doors, cabinet,

Center for Building Technology, 1987).
The CCTV camera and the Radiofrequency identification tracking have also made it possible for
prison guards to manage remotely and control the cells. This has improved the security of the prison

5. Why I Should Start Over The Family Crisis
There are moments in life when important decisions are made which greatly impact and shape one s
life. I still remember mine as if it were yesterday. The day when my father decided to finally pay me a
visit. It was just another hot and humid summer day in Vietnam. The day when my conversation with
father got me leaving my past behind and came to the decision that I should start over again in
America. On that day, I realized how proud my family was of me before the family crisis, how the
crisis has haunted me, and how the conversation with my dad along with my family s support got me
back up to face the reality once again. It has been a year already, huh? I thought to myself as I took a
sip of the cold coffee from a corner of my favorite café shop which was located about twenty blocks
away from home. One year since the day I decided to give up trying to make something out of myself
in the foreign land and moved back to Vietnam to live with my family. Australia was a land of
opportunities where hard work is actually paid off. On the other hand, Vietnam was not much so due
to its status of being a developing country. I have spent a third of my life studying abroad in Australia
and I was sure of how proud my family was of me. I was an all rounded college student, who was able
to work and afford rent and food without family s support. Being an international student was not an
easy job when everything was expensive, especially the ridiculous university tuition fee. I still

Introduction
The two maps that I will compare for my final project are Bernard Ratzer s Plan of the City of New

differences between both maps with one being a grid map of lower Manhattan and the other 2 d bird s

of propaganda. The focus of my comparison will also be the importance of water access is to a

philosophers have impacted the world with their influential ways. The Enlightenment was launched by
European thinkers who did more to change the world. European philosophers did more to change the
world because their ideas and beliefs had given countries the inspiration to create new forms of
government, made it possible for all people to have their freedom and rights, and improved the

world. French philosopher Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède and de Montesquieu, was a
highly influential political thinker during the Age of Enlightenment. Montesquieu was born on
January 18, 1689 in the Aquitaine region of France. Through his masterworks, education, and travels,
he gained much respect from his fellow philosophers ( Charles Louis de Secondat Biography ).
Montesquieu believed that the country of Britain had the most well balanced and best government
power during his time. They made the laws, carried out the laws of the state, and members of the
parliament held legislative power. Their power of government was divided into three branches
Montesquieu called this the separation of powers. After he wrote one of his major works, On the Spirit
of Laws (1748), it went on to influence American and English government. In this book, he talks
about how the separation of powers would keep any individual or group from gaining control of the
government. He then wrote the idea that Power, should be a check to power and this idea would later
be called checks and balances (Online Library). Mary Wollstonecraft an English writer and
philosopher who advocated for women s equality. She was born on April 27, 1759 in London, United
Kingdom. Over time, she published her most famous work, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
which was pressed for educational reforms. Wollstonecraft argued that women, like men, need
education to become virtuous and useful. She is stating that women should have their rights as equal
as the male society. According to Beck, Wollstonecraft urged women to enter into the male dominated
fields of politics and medicine and influenced wealthy women in Paris and other European cities to

9. Kmart Sears Essay
Kmart, Sears and ESL: How a Hedge Fund Became one of the World s Largest Retailers
1. Describe recent trends in the hedge fund and private equity industry and the growing overlap
between the two.
A: Hedge funds, historically, were more interested in the buying and short selling of defaulted or near
default bonds within a few weeks or months. This strategy was more of a short term, exit focused
strategy. Now, however, some hedge funds are becoming more interested in the restructuring and long
term controlling of attractive assets. Hedge funds stakes in these companies are then transformed into
equity from the arising new entity. Private equity is split up into Venture Capital and Leveraged

A: Kmart was, in the late 1970s, much larger than the famous superstore giant called Wal mart with
sales 20x that of Wal mart s and roughly 850 more stores nationwide. However, Kmart s sales stayed
consistently stagnant, while Wal mart became the giant it is now. A poor supply chain, unfriendly store
layout, among other things, created a huge disadvantage versus other big box retailers. In 2001, Kmart
made a tragic decision to cut costs close to Wal mart s famous everyday low price , but by doing so,
took on huge losses and sold items well below cost. This resulted in a lack of liquidity and the ending
result of filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Hedge funds started studying the value of Kmart s distressed assets, but none had the capital nor the
confidence to amass a controlling stake in the defaulted bonds. The bonds wouldn t be sold at par
value, but they would be sold for either cash through the sale of assets or bondholders would receive
equity in the new company emerging from bankruptcy. Bankruptcy was considered an opportunistic
time to acquire businesses that had strong synergies with existing, healthy companies of the same
industry. However, when one sector is struggling to stay afloat, other companies aren t usually able or
willing to commit the cash to acquiring the failed company and thus financial buyers step in.

10. Television Shows and Offensive Language
Offensive language is a part of television that has increased dramatically over the past decades. Public
television shows such as Family Guy, Southpark, The Office, Tosh.0 and countless others are riddled
with offensive jokes that target nearly every group of people on the planet. With so much offensive
language it is hard not to question whether or not this is completely changing how offensive media is
perceived outside of the media. These shows have jokes that use negative stereotypes on almost all
races. Often times they ridicule minority groups, by portraying them with this negative stereotypes.
This research proposal is very important because with the extremely high popularity of some of these
shows with offensive language, and how public they are, it could be affecting the younger generation
into believing that this is acceptable. We know that this could be a problem because of theories in
media such as the Cultivation Theory, Social Learning Theory, and Perceived Reality. My research
question is how does watching television with offensive language affect the viewing audience when
they hear offensive language outside of the television shows. Specifically my research would target
high school students who watch one or more television shows with offensive language, and how
acceptable they believe offensive language to be inside and outside of these shows. It is important to
view the high school students, because they are the future parents and leaders of the

gas and electricity bill. The expenses don t only apply to what goes into the little condos. There is
many staff members who make such visitations possible. To start of there can be officers that are in
charge to clean the units before and after every visitation to make sure there is no harm for both the
prisoner and the family members. As well there is correctional officers who specify in checking

15. Challenges Of China Resource Corporation
The most significant challenges China Resource Corporation faced prior to 6S were government
intervention, over diversification, lack of strategy, lack of centralized reporting, and short term
focused managers. New policies in the economy during the late 70s under Deng ended CRC s
monopoly for China s trade. The introduction of special economic zones (SEZs) and joint venture
partnerships reduced CRCs value position as the mediator, as it was no longer necessary for firms to
work thru CRC to access the goods and benefits. CRCs broadening of interests and portfolio
diversification grew rapidly due to the loss of its monopoly. The expansion of investments caused
overinvestment and overcapacity which cut into returns and it became evident that the company s
assets and operations were poorly controlled and too diverse. Even with improved operations through
cutting offices and unprofitable companies as well as improved financial management, CRC
subsidiaries remained separated with little centralized reporting or integration into the corporate
strategy. Many of the companies were opportunity driven rather than strategic and the quality of
performance assessment, reporting, and management varied significantly across the subsidiaries,
making it challenging for managers to see and address each company s opportunities. Managers were
more concerned with hitting yearly benchmarks than long term strategy. Utilizing 6S, Jiang Wei was

20. Women s Conditions In The Victorian Age
For many years, women have been considered inferior to men and, as a consequence, they have been
subservient to men and to their own families. For instance, they had to be chaste, obedient,

were expected to stay at home and dedicated themselves to the education of children and to the
domestic cleaning.
In the history of the United Kingdom, an important period that contributed to the subsequent
independence of women was the Victorian Age. During this era, we can identify three types of

This paperwork comprises PSY 301 Week 3 Assignment Persuasion Who What To Whom
Persuasion: Who, What, To Whom
As we explore persuasion, we can divide the persuasive communication into three parts: the
communicator, the message, and the audience. First, we will deal with what characteristics of
persuaders make people more likely to be persuaded. Next, we will think about characteristics of the
message that lead people to change. Finally, we will explore what characteristics of the audience can
lead them to be persuaded. (Feenstra, 2011, p. 88) For your assignment this week, provide an in depth
analysis of the three parts of persuasion. Please reference the bullet points below to complete your
assignment.

Psychology General Psychology Persuasion: Who, What, To Whom In your textbook, Feenstra (2011)
states, As we explore persuasion, we can divide the persuasive communication into three parts: the
communicator, the message, and the audience. (p. 88). For your assignment this week, construct a
paper that provides an in depth analysis of the three parts of persuasion. Address the following points
in your paper:
1. Who Describe the Characteristics of the Persuader: What influences our ability to become
persuaded by someone? What specific characteristics must this person possess? Be sure to address the
impact of credibility, physical attractiveness, and likeability in your response. Why do we respond
well to those who possess such characteristics? Would we respond the same to an unattractive, angry,
or non credible person? Why not? 2. What Discuss the Characteristics of the Message: What attributes
are inherent in persuasive messages? How are we influenced by the emotion, framing, narratives, and
rational appeals in the messaging we receive? What is the significance of the sleeper effect? 3. To
Whom Examine the Characteristics of the Audience: Why do different audiences perceive messages in
different ways? What is the role of culture, gender, and self esteem in

that would later change after he was found on fraud and other cases. The story of Jordan Belfort is a
story of one man s raise to power and one hard fall from power, this story can also be seen in William

one in clinical or school settings. Group achievement tests might also be considered as educational
achievement tests, since these instruments are apparently employed in academic settings. On the other
hand, individual achievement tests may be an important measurement tool in the diagnosis of learning
disability. Not only do these tests render documentation of impaired scholastic performance in crucial
areas as reading, writing, and numerical ability, some achievement tests can aid in identifying certain
skill deficits relative to learning disabilities. In an ideal manner, individual achievement tests should
be used in conjunction with other measurement tools, especially intelligence tests. According to Aiken
(2003b), any test of ability (general intelligence, special abilities, achievement) actually assesses what
people have achieved. Specifically, the items on intelligence and special abilities tests require test
takers to manifest some accomplishment, just like those on achievement tests. Educational
achievement tests often serve as reliable predictors of school marks compared to tests of intelligence
and special abilities, but still cannot completely replace them. It is notable to mention that the
individual s attainment measured by general intelligence tests are indeed broader and the products of
less formal and usually less recent learning experiences compared to the ones measured by
standardized achievement tests (Aiken, 2003c). Cohen et al. (2013b) regarded that the

Theodore Roosevelt and a Strengthened Presidency Theodore Roosevelt has been recalled as one of
our most forceful Presidents. The reason for his reputation of strength rested on his ability to get
things done, both domestically and abroad. His policies resulted in a strengthened executive branch.
Roosevelt inherited the Presidency after the unfortunate death of President McKinley in 1901. One of
his earliest displays of Federal power came in 1902 with the Pennsylvania coal strike. His efforts at
negotiation marked the first time that the Federal government stepped in to resolve a labor dispute
with the intention to protect all concerned, as opposed to favoring industry over workers and the
public good. Although the coal miners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Towards this end, he passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Both of
these measures marked the beginnings of reform in consumer rights, which before Roosevelt, had
been virtually ignored. Part of his policy of protecting the public welfare included conservation, an
idea that was previously not given much attention. Americans had always used their natural resources
without regard for the future, yet President Roosevelt managed to awaken public interest in
conservation, spur Congress to action and convince Federal and state governments to adopt new
policies. He withdrew from public sale 150 acres of forest lands, coal and phosphate lands, and
potential water power sites. At his urging, Congress created wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.
The Newlands Reclamation Act provided money from the sale of public lands in 16 Western states and
territories to build irrigation projects to make wastelands suitable for farming. Two of these are the
Shoshone Dam in Wyoming and Arizona s Roosevelt Dam. Additionally, he created the Inland
Waterways Commission, and held the White House Conference of 1908, which succeeded in
establishing state conservation agencies in 41 states and established the National Conservation
Commission to study the nation s mineral, water, forest and soil resources. Roosevelt s conservation
policy established a strong foundation for a solid conservation program for the future. Roosevelt

26. The Things They Carried, And Big Fish And The American Dream
Patrick Rothfuss, an American writer, once said, It s like everyone tells a story about themselves
inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves
out of that story. Rothfuss explains how storytelling is always a part of everyone. Stories are told in
different ways, and those stories shape the person tremendously. Many of the stories told today are
what shape the audience. In The Things they Carried , by Tim O Brien, and the film Big Fish , directed
by Tim Burton, stories are portrayed to be productive because the characters all have an American
Dream and their stories help the characters achieve tasks to get to their American Dream.
According to Why Americans are Obsessed with Telling their Stories , by Ozy Qi Wang, American
parents regard parent child bonding as the No.1 priority of personal storytelling: They encourage
children to share their stories, pay great attention to and are sympathetic with children s thoughts and
feelings, and create opportunities to re experience the past with children. Americans think it is key to
keep their children s dreams alive, they encourage them at a young age to express how they feel and
what they dream of for their future. Kids grow up used to the idea of sharing their stories and create
more meaningful connections with everyone they encounter. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom told his son
stories growing up to show him that anything is possible. Throughout the film, Ed Bloom got his

Despite the fact that Pi is a vegetarian, he has to eat raw food in order to survive. Pi realizes that he is
becoming similar to Richard Parker in the ways of eating. The descriptions of Pi s eating habits show
Pi s savage side. Without Richard Parker, Pi would not have had a role model to show him the ways of
surviving. As the coast of Mexico becomes visible, Pi realizes that he and Richard Parker must depart
and Pi becomes very distressed about this. As Pi and Richard Parker separate, Pi says I was weeping
because Richard Parker left me so unceremoniously. What a terrible thing is to botch a farewell
(Martel 360). At this point, Pi and Richard Parker have survived the Pacific Ocean. The two have
spent a lot of time together, which is unheard of. When Pi and Richard Parker separate, Pi is
devastated that his companion has left him so abruptly. Richard Parker had become a part of Pi but
now that Richard Parker had left, there seems to be a vacant part of Pi. When Richard Parker leaves,
the savage side of Pi seems to leave as well because there is no need for that side anymore.
Civilization doesn t show the savage side of human beings. Richard Parker is essential to Pi because
he taught Pi the fundamentals on how to survive without any assistance. In the novel, Life of Pi, the
author uses the symbolic Richard Parker to represent different parts of Pi and his life. It is easy to see
how a 450 pound Bengal tiger can be a threat to the life of an individual, but when

Richard Wright
Whenever I thought of the essential bleakness of black life in America, I knew that Negroes had never
been allowed to catch the full spirit of Western civilization, that they lived somehow in it but not of it.
And when I brooded upon the cultural barrenness of black life, I wondered if clean, positive
tenderness, love, honor, loyalty, and the capacity to remember were native with man. I asked myself if
these human qualities were not fostered, won, struggled and suffered for, preserved in ritual from one
generation to another. This passage written in Black Boy, the autobiography of Richard Wright shows

One book of particular interest to Richard was H.L. Menken s Book of Prefaces, it was a basis to a
majority of his own writings. Richard traveled around the country picking up odd jobs but these jobs
didn t meet his standards, they didn t exercise his abilities. Hence Richard decided to enter the
political arena. After being refused from both the Democratic and Republican parties.....Richard
entered the Communist party after hearing of there efforts to promote equality among races.
While in the Communist Party, Richard s writings began to have a direct influence on many people.
He was a leading contributor to the magazine and newspapers Daily Worker and New Masses which
held very controversial beliefs for the time. His novels, Uncle Tom s Children (1938) and Native Son
(1940) were written while he was in the party. Richard was one of a few black men in the Communist
Party and it was because of him that many black American s began to look to the Communist Party.
Because of a lack of results and his outspoken militancy, Wright broke away from the party in 1944.
The essay, The God that Failed , gives an oversight to why Richard disagreed with the Communist
party. According to the Communist Party, Richard was not writing about what they wanted such as
ways to come together and fight against others,he was reflecting the life of the black American and the
Communists found this to have little importance to what they were trying to portray.

1927, Parliament House was opened which increased the necessity for a stronger police system in

Clothing became less expensive in the 1960 s because of the Industrial Revolution, so more people are
seen being involved in popular fashion trends and expressing themselves in ways they please because
of the affordability. The sharply angled Vidal Sassoon hair style where women cut their hair shorter
and styled it in an angular way. This decade also started the trend of people wanting to look skinnier.
Designers preferred models looked younger, thinner, and had longer legs. Social factors occurring at
the time also effected fashion and helped represent people s beliefs. André Courrège s came out with
many new fashions that reflected America s involvement in the Space Race with Russia during that
time and our achievement for having sent a person to the moon. This space age caused Courrège to
come out with designs that resemble space suits which included: silver sequined pants, white plastic
like boots, and white sunglasses with slits. Courrège also came out with a regular suit that had a
geometrically cut jacket and angled collar which became a big hit. In the 1970 s, many fashions were
inspired by the hippie look and many clothes were becoming handmade again. Hair was often worn
long and straight or rolled into corkscrew curls and loose waves. Hot pants, tie dyed shirts, bell
bottoms, and flared pants worn with platform shoes became a hit. Jeans also became a standard

In Yasijuro Ozu s 1932 social melodrama, I Was Born But..., it s use of mise en scene works well to
describe the characters lives at home, as well as the tone of an economically depressed Japan. As a
slice of life movie, one scene stands out between separating Yoshi, the father, and his co workers.
While the camera pans across an office of yawning workers, Yoshi is patiently waiting at his desk for
something, like being called into his boss office. During his discussion with Mr. Iwasaki, his co
workers criticize him for kissing up to the boss, by moving into the suburbs. Following this
conversation, the camera slides the other way, showing all of the office employees busy at their desk,
before abruptly cutting to the children in school doing the same thing. In this scene Ozu does a very

Ethnic cleansing is defined as, the systematic deliberate removal of ethnic or religious groups from a
given territory with the intent of making it ethnically homogenous. Genocide is defined as, the
deliberate killing of a large group of people especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
Developed nations should take the responsibility of intervening in nations practising these crimes
against humanity, because millions of lives have been lost due to the conflicts that their countries are
facing, and we have the resources to intervene in a nation facing a crisis before it is escalated into a
genocide. Genocides and ethnic cleansing has been an ongoing issue responsible for the destruction of
many human lives in developing nations. The Rwandan genocide in 1994 was the quickest massacre
killing 800,000 people in 100 days. The death of the president was a trigger for the genocide.
Rwandan president, Juvenal Habyarimana who was a Hutu was killed when his plane was shot down
outside of the country s capital Kigali. The Hutus automatically held the Tutsis responsible for the
murder. Following the death of the president the Hutu rebels filled the capital while taking control of

37. The Use Of Firearm Investigation On The Examination Of...
Sarah Schulteis
Professor Papez
Intro to Forensic Science
28 March 2015
Firearm Investigation
Firearm investigation is a specialty of forensic science focusing on the examination of firearms,
(Rankin) and has been around for hundreds of years. One of the earliest recorded cases was of a man
shot and killed in 1784 England with a pistol. The police found the wad of paper from the weapon and
matched it to a piece of torn newspaper in a suspect s pocket, sending him to jail (Triple Murder). In
modern times, examining the engravings, striations, and bullets, a trained eye can distinguish the type
of firearm used, and sometimes identify the exact one. Ballistics can help recreate a crime scene by
analyzing the wound size, damage, and angle of the bullet hole, along with the distribution of
ammunition and cartridges. Gunshot residue is another commonly implemented technique testing
hands, nearby objects, and the target for particles burned within a gun. This both helps recreate the
scene and identifies those who have recently shot a gun (Rankin). Due to increases in gun violence,
research has advanced so that, through the use of databases, the unique markings from spent
ammunition can be tracked to a single firearm and identify the shooter.
To understand the process of firearm investigations, it is important to understand the mechanics of
firing a gun. The most generic gun aims to convert chemical energy into kinetic energy in order to
expel a projectile from the firearm.

38. How Lasers Work, The Development Over Time And The Effect...
This essay will discuss how lasers work, the development over time and the effect on people s lives.
Lasers work by using a process called stimulated emission which allows an incoming photon (of a
precise level) to interact with an excited atomic electron. Stimulated emission allows three things to
occur. The first is the light from a laser being monochromatic. This means that the light is of only of
one specific wavelength of colour. The wavelength of light is decided by the amount of energy
released when the electron drops into a lower orbit. Light can only be released when an atom has
become excited and gives off an electric discharge which causes the electrons to drop form a high
energy orbit into a lower energy orbit. The second is coherency; this is the organization of the light.
Every photon moves in a specific time to match the others. Therefore each photon has wave fronts that
take off in unison. The third is the direction of the light. The light has a very concentrated beam and is
very strong. Ordinary light do not have these properties. The light of a flashlight is very spread out
and disorganized unlike the light of a laser.
Lasers were developed through hundreds of years of experiment. Originally it was not thought to have
been possible or event relevant until approximately three years before the first laser was built. The
first of the important discoveries that lead to the development of the laser was in 1880 by American
inventor Alexander Graham Bell. He

39. Social Equality In Ralph Ellison s Battle Royal
Marriages between African Americans and whites were prohibited by sixteen states, including
Virginia, until the revolutionary United States supreme court case of Loving v. Virginia. Gunnar
Myrdal illustrates in his essay, Social Equality, how society, specifically white men, felt about white
women being romantically involved with black men. Ralph Ellison in his short story Battle Royal,
gives an example of how African American men felt around white women before intermarriage was
permissible. Before the case of Loving v. Virginia, various influential African Americans were in
intermarriages. Today, miscegenation and/or interracial marriages are not only tolerable, but accepted
by most United States citizens. White men were appalled and outraged by the idea of white women
and black men being in an intimate and romantic relationship, especially if it resulted in having
children. It is more directed toward women because in regard to white men it is taken more or less for
granted that they would not stoop to marry Negro women... and since the popular doctrine says that
maternity is stronger than paternity the child of a Negro women and a white man would be considered
Negro and vice versa (Myrdal, 1090). Essentially, white men wanted to maintain the purity of the
white race, retain their superiority of the white race, and avoid pollution of Negro blood into the white
race (Myrdal, 1090). People in the South agreed that there was a high allure to prevent intermarriage,

40. 1800 s Political Changes
The early decades of the 1800 s fostered significant political changes (Schultz, 2009). The American
politics were becoming more democratic, which resulted in historians referring to this part of history
as the the era of the common man. The political changes of the early 1800 s were significantly
impacted by the following four reasons: economic booms and busts, expansion of vote, presidential
election of 1824, and the second two party system. The economic changes caused by the Market
Revolution resulted in a booming economy. However, in 1819 the demand for the American
agricultural produce crashed partly due to the European recovery for the Napoleonic War of 1815.
Thus, the newly constructed Second Bank of United States, which had

41. Vampires in Modern Culture
One of the oldest and well known mythological monsters throughout history are blood sucking
immortals known as vampires. They transgress the boundaries that humans are always trying to
establish. Vampire lore has reflected the values and social structures of the culture it has existed in, but
over the past century the values have transformed. From the classic story of Stoker s Dracula where he
is presented as sinister and non human, the vampire aspect of literature has evolved drastically to a
more heroic immortal.
Physically, vampires have changed their appearance over the last century from the dark and non
human approach to a more modern and humanistic look. Earlier authors focused on gothic themed
vampire narratives giving them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Powers such as mind reading and seeing into the future help with the immortals ability to defeat their
enemies. Limitations have also evolved to more human friendly affiliations, and vampires are now
blended in with modern society.
Although vampires have always been known for drinking blood and immortal, the nature of their kind
has developed over time into a more compassionate kind. Dracula and Lestat centered more on
European and aristocratic culture and the immortal aspect of the monster where they were sinister and
preyed on the weak. The culture of vampires were seen as malicious and predators, whereas the
Cullens are the good vampires that do not feed on human blood. Throughout the twentieth century,
vampires main focus in on the Western culture. Since the barrier between human society and the
immortals has been broken down over the past century, the vampires in modern media are now viewed
as more of a misunderstood, heroic character. Protection over the ones the vampires care about is a
vital part of their identity.
An important detail of the role of vampires is how they can be destroyed. The death of vampires has
evolved over the last century from a stake to the heart to breaking the neck and being burned. While it
has always been known for vampires to stay away from the light, the severity of it changes with each
vampire narrative. Sunlight is key to giving away the discreet features of the immortal

42. Greatest Personal Strength
My greatest personal strength is being committed in basketball or studying. What if I was a person
who was never committed in these things? I would be a totally new human being! Also, I would have
to go through many hard times. That would make life miserable. I have always been committed to
basketball. Every night I would go to the basketball courts and shoot. Also, I would try to mimic
players like LeBron James off of Youtube. If I was never committed to basketball I would be at home
doing nothing. That would be an unhealthy life to live. That is because I wouldn t be able to exercise
or interact with my friends that also play the game I love. Also, if I was never committed to basketball,
I would have a stressful day. I know this for

43. Pornography Viewed by The Four Ethical Standards Essay
The word Pornography is defined as writings, photographs, movies, etc., intended to arouse sexual
excitement . With each year that passes pornography has been more and more accepted, it can be seen
in books, magazines, cable television and most of all through the internet. Many religions go against
it, but at the same time people know that there is a reason why people go into the business and
accepted it an other people just like it. In this paper I will talk about pornography and how it is viewed
by the four ethical standards (Utilitarian, Kant, Human Rights and Justice is Fairness). Utility
(Utilitarian) is measured by the amount of benefits for all people or greatest number of people. By this
pornography is accepted since it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Off course there are exemptions on which people are brought into the business against there own will.
By this standard if you choose to go into the business then by K 2 standards it is ethical. K 1 applies
the Universality principle, which asks the question Would a person in a similar circumstance do the
same thing? Most of the people who are in the pornography business know that they could be making
money in another way. And if asked, they would not like their son or daughter to follow their steps. By
this it would flunk the K 1 standard. K 3 applies the publicity test, which asks Would I be willing to
tell my grandmother? By majority nobody would tell their grandmother about it, if he or she is
working in pornography. It would flunk the publicity test. Human Rights are what more people are
concerned with. Pornography fits in where people have the freedom of speech, life and the right to
pursue happiness. While people are doing it by their own means and have the adequate age then
pornography is all right. In my opinion pornography does violate welfare rights, since pornography is
not considered a moral and ethical way of living because it is not a descent environment. Pornography
under the principle of equal liberty it is accepted since it gives liberty to choose. But the only thing is
that not everyone respects the people who work in pornography, because they don t think it is right to
make their living in that way. Under the

The Life of a Registered Sex Offender

Abstract
When we hear the phrase, sex offender, we normally feel repulsed. We think of dirty old creepy men. I
for one used to do this, I won t lie. This is because people like to rush to judgment. But my opinions
changed when I came to the realization that it s not just creepy old men who are sex offenders. I want
to talk about them, but not those who are serial rapists or child molesters; they don t deserve to be
talked about. I m talking about people who are convicted, whether it s falsely, or unjustly, and have to
wear a stamp on their forehead for the rest of their lives saying they are a sex offender.
I have an uncle named Michael and he s 29; he ll be 31 in October. In 2006 in Fredericksburg,
Virginia, he was convicted of rape. A young woman lied and said he raped her, and now he will
forever be scarred. In many rape cases, the defense will say that the victim was fantasizing the rape or
is lying, but sometimes she really is lying (Siegel, 1995, p. 304). Virginia has a two tier system for sex
offenders, violent and non violent. Even though Michaels charge was for the rape of an adult, he is
still considered a violent sexual predator, forever. This means he can t go to McDonalds, he can t go to
see his nieces and nephews, and he couldn t even go to my high school graduation two
