4. INTRODUCTION
• Mulberry is a perennial tree which sprouts throughout the year.
• It offers food and shelter to a number of insect and non insect
organisms
• Such organisms cause economic loss to mulberry growers by reducing
the quality and quantity of leaves harvested for silkworm feeding
• The pests of mulberry plant has been classified into two types they
are
•Major pests
•Minor pests

5. MINOR PESTS OF MULBERRY
• Grass hoppers
• Stem girdlers
• Termites
• Jassid

6. Grass hoppers
• Neoorthocris acuticeps nilgriensis,Belongs to
the family Acridiae
• Order Orthoptera of the class Insecta
• This is commonly called as wingless grass
hopper
LIFE CYCLE
•Adults are greenish in colour
•Female lays average 6-8 egg pods, Each having
11-18 eggs
•Hatches in about 28-31 days
•Nymphs undergo six moults
•It completes it’s life cycle in 5-6 months

7. Symptoms
• Branches of plants without leaves are
observed in the mulberry garden
Occurrence
• The attack is recorded during July-
August
Damage
•Nymphs and adults of this pest
voraciously feed upon the mulberry
leaves and leaf yield is reduced
considerably

8. Management
•Exposing egg masses by deep ploughing for
destruction by natural enemies
• Spraying 0.5%BHC with a safe period of 15
days

9. Stem girdlers
• Sthenias grisator belongs to the family
cerambicidae
• Order coleoptera of the class Insecta
LIFE CYCLE
•Female deposits eggs underneath the
bark of the girdled branch at night
•The incubation period is about 8 days
•Grubs turn into pre-pupa and pupa inside
the tunnel
•The whole life cycle lasts for 7-8 Months

10. Symptoms
•Girdled branches of the plant or wilting plants are
observed in the garden
Occurrence
•Throughout the year
Damage
•This beetle has a peculiar habit of ringing the
stems, The bark and wood are neatly cut around
the main stem or branch leaving a clear girdle
•The portion above the girdle gradually wilts and
dies

11. Management
•Cutting and. Burning of the branches
and stem showing the symptom of
beetle attack
•Swabbing of the base of main stem or
branches with 0.1% BHC solution safe
period 11 days

12. Termites
• Termites belongs to the Order isoptera
• They are commonly called as White ants
Life cycle
•Mature queen lays several thousand eggs
•Incubation period varies from 24-90 days
•Duration of development and number of
nymphal instars vary greatly with the cast and
usual environmental factors

13. Symptoms
•Dry plants are observed in the garden
Occurance
•Usually from October onwards and continues
till the onset of monsoon
Damage
• They feed upon the roots and bark of young
and old plant
•Attack of termite results in mortality of the
plant

14. Management
•Location and destruction of termite
colonies by removing queen termite
•Swabbing or denching of established
plants at the base with 1% Chlordane safe
period 25 days

15. Jassid
• Emposca flavescence ,belongs to the
family cicadellidae
• Order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta
Life cycle
• Eggs are pale yellow
• Eggs hatch in 4-9 days
• Nymphs moults four times
• Adults are pale green in colour
• They measure 2.5-4mm in body length

16. Symptoms
•A triangular dark brown spots
appears at the tip followed by such
patches Along the margin of viens
•In the final stage of attack the leaf
becomes cup shaped and withers
easily from the plant
Occurance
•Usually during summer months

17. Management
• Setting light traps for attracting and
trapping adults
• Spraying 0.1% Dimethotate or 0.05%
DDVP is effective with a safe period of
11 days
