2. TYPE OF WATER
• All natural water sources contain minerals
• The mineral constituents found in greatest abundance are bicarbonates,
sulphates, calcium chlorides, magnesium and sodium.
• Carbon dioxide contents may be greater than expected as a result of the
decomposition of organic matter.
• Three water sources are described here
A) Spring water
B) Lake water
C) Surface water / River water

SPRING WATER: Well water is usually clear with a consistent
composition. It may contain sodium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonate,
magnesium bicarbonate, iron and carbon dioxide.
LAKE WATER: Lake water can be clear but may be coloured and slightly
acidic. High acidity combined with the presence of dissolved gases makes
the source corrosive. Although lake water contains some calcium,
magnesium chlorides and sulphates. The concentration of electrolytes is
low.
SURFACE WATER: Surface water contains chlorides, sulphates, calcium
bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonates.

IMPURITIES
Impurities in water discussed under the following headings.
Turbidity and colour: Turbidity may be caused by larger or small mineral
and organic particles suspended in the water. Mineral particles may include
fine vegetables wastes, fats and micro organisms.
Sedimentation: Sedimentation in tanks or reservoirs is adequate to clear
large particles, but filtration is needed for small or colloidal fragments.

Alkalinity: Raw water contains bicarbonates in amounts dependent on their
origin. Often, water may contain small amounts of carbonate alkaline. The
number of bicarbonate ions present may be isolated by titration using
phenolphthalein as an indicator in the second stage.
Hardness of water: Water hardness is caused by calcium and magnesium
salts. Other contributing elements to hardness include metallic ions such as
iron and strontium.

EFFECT ON SILK QUALITY
• Know the influence of the water on raw silk in existing reeling
centers.
• Different sources in the traditional silk reeling units of Bholahat on
the reeling performance and quality.
• Four different water samples of Bholahat region together with distilled
water were used to reel silk cocoons of the race (Br-Urboshi) and their
effects on raw silk and silk quality were analysed. The results obtained
and discussed herein.

• Suggest that water from bore well and river water.
• Which contain relatively low hardness (total, temporary and permanent
hardness)
• Optimum pH levels are acceptable for silk reeling, which gives more raw
silk for better reelability.
• Optimum pH levels required for yielding more raw silk with reelability is
6.8 – 7.4 (slightly acidic and slightly alkaline).
• Renditta, medium sized deviation, tenacity and better winding
