Mountains and Plateaus
By: Slide_maker4u
(Abhishek Sharma)
Asia is divided into
five physical
features but central
highlands are one of
them
Central Highlands
 The central highland is a
continuous chain of mountains
which stretches from the
Bering strait to Asia Minor. It is a
complex system of fold
mountains and pleatues that
makes up the core of the
mountain system of asia that lies
to the south of the northern
lowlands. This belt runs across
the continent from west to east.
The centre of this mountain
system is the Pamir knot from
which a number of young fold
mountain ranges enclose high
plateaus and desert basins. To
the west of Pamir knot, there are
two ranges:
(i) The Sulaiman Range
 This extends in the
south-west direction and
continues in west as the
Zagros Mountains along
the coast of Iran.The
Zagros Mountains
converge at the
American Knot and
continue westward into
Turkey as theTaurus
Mountains
(i) The Hindukush Range
 The mountain range lies
to the west of the Pamir
Knot and runs towards
the Elbruz mountain in
Iran
 There are two
intermountain pleatues
enclosed by the sulaiman
and Hindukush ranges:-
 The pleatues of Iran which lies between
the Elbruz Mountain in the north and the
Zangros Mountains in the south.
 The pletaeau of Anatolin which lies
between the Pontic mountains in the north
and the Taurus mountain in the south.
This region is known as the Asia Minor.
To the east of
Pamir Knot,
there are four
mountain ranges
 It lies in the
northern part of
India. It is a young
fold mountain
range having the
world’s highest
peak, Mount
Everest (8,848).
(ii) The Karakoram Range
 It lies to the north of
the Himalayas and
passes through the
state of Jammu and
Kashmir
 It lies to the north of the
Tibetan pleatue and to
the south of the the
Tarim basin. In the north
of the Tarim Basin lies
the Tien Shan
Mountains. It is the
northmost branch from
the Pamir Knot while the
Allai mountains extends
further in the northeast
(iv) The Arakan Yoma Mountains
 It is the range of
Himalayas which
continues through the
Andaman and Nicobar
Islands, Myanmar,
Sumatra, Java and other
Indonasian islands.
There are two
more pleatues
enclosed by
mountain ranges:-
(i) The Plateau of Tibet
 It is the highest
plateau while is
known as “The
Roof of the World’’.
It lies between the
Himalayan ranges
and the Kulun
Mountains
(ii) Plateau of Mangolia
 The Alai mountains lie to
the north of this plateau
and the Tien Shan
mountains lie to the
West
