Motivation theories include Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's two-factor theory, Alderfer's ERG theory, McClelland's acquired needs theory, and equity theory. Equity theory states that motivation is influenced by comparing one's own outcomes and inputs to those of others. Alderfer's ERG theory classifies needs into existence, relatedness, and growth categories. McClelland's theory identified three needs that motivate behavior: the need for achievement, power, and affiliation.

3. MOTIVATION
Motivation is the characteristic that helps you
achieve your goal. It is the drive that pushes you
to work hard .It is the energy that gives you the
strength to get up and keep going - even when
things are not going your way
6. EQUITY THEORY
• This theory describes about how a person compares his output with other’s output
and motivates himself to achieve the output.
• Inequity occurs when a person perceives that the ratio of his or her outcomes to
inputs and the ratio of a relevant other’s outcomes to inputs are unequal.
Schematically, this is represented as follows:
person’s outcomes/person’s input < other’s outcome/other’s input
8. • Alderfer classifies needs into three categories, also ordered
hierarchically:
• EXISTENCE NEEDS: this include the need for basic material
necessities. In short, it include individual’s psychological and
physical safety needs.
• RELATEDNESS NEEDS: Maslow’s social needs and external
component of esteem needs fall under this class of need
• GROWTH NEEDS: Maslow’s self actualization need and intrinsic
component of esteem needs fall under this category
10. McClelland classifies three basic motivating needs.
NEED FOR ACHIEVEMENT: the persons are “achievement
motivated” and therefore seeks achievement, achievement of
realistic but challenging goals and advancement in the job.
NEED FOR POWER: the persons are “ AUTHORITY MOTIVATED” it
produces a need to be influential, effective and to make an
impact. There is a strong need to lead and for their ideas to
prevail.
NEED FOR AFFILIATION: the persons are “AFFILIATION
MOTIVATED” and has a need for friendly relationship and is
motivated towards interaction towards other people.
