 The term motivation is derived from the word ‘motive”.
 Motive may be defined as an inner state of our mind that activates
and directs our behaviour

energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job,

(Herzberg )
 By Federick Herzberg, In 1959.
 Based on 200 engineer and accountant
feedback ( USA ).
 He define two sets of factor in deciding
employee working attitude and level of
performance.

• These factor do not provide satisfaction to the employee but their
absence will dissatisfy them (dissatisfies)

• Motivation factor give positive satisfaction arising from intrinsic
condition of the job such as recognition, achievement or personal
growth
• (Presence – satisfaction ) & (Absence - no dissatisfaction )

It is of two elements
1) Extrinsic Motivation
2) Intrinsic Motivation
What is Cognitive Evaluation Theory?
Why this happens ?
Two Reasons:-
1) The extrinsic rewards are offered, the individual himself loses a lot of control
on the task. This loss of control results in lower intrinsic motivation.
2) The presence of extrinsic rewards changes the perception of the individual. In
this shift from intrinsic motivation to extrinsic motivation.

'Theory X' and 'Theory Y‘ (by Douglas McGregor, In 1960) Theory “ X” Theory “ Y “ • People need close supervision. • Will avoid work when possible. • Will avoid responsibility. • That they desire only money. • People must be pushed to perform. • People want independence in work • People seek responsibility • People are motivated by self fulfillment • People naturally want to work • People will drive themselves to perform
  • 9. Two factor theory (Herzberg )  By Federick Herzberg, In 1959.  Based on 200 engineer and accountant feedback ( USA ).  He define two sets of factor in deciding employee working attitude and level of performance.

Two factor theory (Herzberg ) hygiene factors • These factor do not provide satisfaction to the employee but their absence will dissatisfy them (dissatisfies) motivators • Motivation factor give positive satisfaction arising from intrinsic condition of the job such as recognition, achievement or personal growth • (Presence – satisfaction ) & (Absence - no dissatisfaction )

  • 15. Cognitive Evaluation Theory • Psychology that is designed to explain the effects of external consequences on internal motivation It is of two elements 1) Extrinsic Motivation 2) Intrinsic Motivation What is Cognitive Evaluation Theory?
  • 16. Why this happens ? Two Reasons:- 1) The extrinsic rewards are offered, the individual himself loses a lot of control on the task. This loss of control results in lower intrinsic motivation. 2) The presence of extrinsic rewards changes the perception of the individual. In this shift from intrinsic motivation to extrinsic motivation.
