This document discusses open analyses and reproducible research. It recommends using programming languages like R and Python that are free and open source. Tools like Jupyter notebooks and R Markdown combine narrative, code, and output and allow sharing and hosting analyses. These tools promote reproducibility by making analytical methods and data open and transparent. The document concludes that open design and data enable fully reproducible research and that comments and documentation are important for others to understand and replicate analyses.
This presentation was given by David Mellor of the Center for Open Science during the joint NISO-ICSTI event held on October 26, 2016 on the topic of enabling innovation in researcher workflow and scholarly communication.

Open Education Research: Insights from the Global OER Graduate Network (GO-GN)Robert Farrow
This presents an overview of the Global OER Graduate Network (GO-GN) Research Methods Handbook. The aims of the GO-GN are:
- to raise the profile of research into open education,
- to offer support for those conducting PhD research in this area, and
- to develop openness as a process of research.
More than 100 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers form the core of the network with more than 200 experts, supervisors, mentors and interested parties forming a community of practice.
The Handbook was developed by members of the network who are researchers in open education, and serves as a useful starting point for anyone wishing to do research in education with a focus on OER, MOOCs or OEP.
To contextualise this approach, an accessible and brief description of the types of methods typically used in research into education and educational technology will be provided. Some of the contrasting philosophical, epistemological and ontological commitments of different research paradigms will be described. Theoretical perspectives will be outlined (though not fully explored).
The Handbook benefits from a range of illustrations (courtesy of Bryan Mathers) which are intended to make the Handbook more relatable and accessible. Reflections on the process of creating the visual journey will be shared.
Finally, the presentation will offer up for discussion a provisional model of open scholarship including open practices (agile project management; directly influencing practice; radical transparency; sharing research instruments; social media presence; networks); open science (open access; open data; open licensing); digital innovation (HCI; data science; open source technologies); and normative elements (challenging dominant narratives; promoting social justice; and reducing barriers to educational access).

This presentation will address the latest developments in lecture capture and the way universities are using lecture capture to enhance and augment their learning offer to students. During this presentation, information about a variety of different pedagogical models will be provided related to the technical support mechanisms being put in place by universities to support such models.

Dentro de esta comunicación se analizará el estado del arte de la Tecnología Educativa y su aplicación en la Enseñanza de la Ingeniería, dado el papel cada vez mayor que juega al tecnología dentro de los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje.
En los últimos diez años se ha vivido una evolución impresionante del uso de las tecnologías dentro del proceso de aprendizaje, así como el uso de las comunicaciones e Internet. Existen diversas fuentes que se dedican al análisis de la evolución de la tecnología y el impacto en al enseñanza, por ejemplo el informe anual de Horizon, contemplando desde su óptica la evolución previsible de la misma y agrupándola en una serie de áreas y objetivos temporales.
Se analizará en esta contribución el impacto de las tecnologías incluidas en este tipo de informes, así como otras que no se recogen en ellos (y desde nuestro punto de vista si deberían recogerse allí). Y se estudiará al tendencia desde el principio del siglo XXI y las previsiones para los siguientes años.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

• There are many statistical tools out there. These are
important factors to take into account:
• Proprietary vs free software: is it available to everyone?
• Use of interoperable data formats
• Programming vs. point-and-click interface
• Flexible library system and active communities
• The recommendation is programming languages that are
free and open. The most extended are R and Python
• Deployment tools like Docker or Ansible for environments
• Ethical discussion and relevance of proprietary software

Conclusions
• Open design and open data enables the use of open analyses for
full reproducibility
• HTML outputs with code/outputs are the most interoperable and easily
hosted in the web
• Code is only good if it can be understood and replicated
• Write readable code (avoid obfuscation)
• Write comments explaining decisions
• Don’t perform any manual changes outside the code
• In the future, there could be complete transparent publications in
these interactive environments
• Applies in qualitative research too (coding schemes, coded or
disagreement examples, etc)
• Follow guidelines like DRESS protocol or OECD principles
