Introduction
•Objective: Transparently making available, data, materials,
code and other resources in a public repository
• Diverse formats: Tabular data, text, video, interview transcripts,
sensorial data…
•This allows other researchers to inspect it, review it and
build upon it
•Technology greatly facilitates Open Data: large storage and
connectivity is no longer a problem
•In a study, only 25.7% of researchers (out of 140) shared
data on request as promised (Witchers et al., 2006)

Options for Sharing Data
•Using portals for public data sharing
•Sites like Open Science Framework or Dataverse
•Example: the HarvardX Person-Course Academic Year
2013 De-Identified dataset
•Publishing dataset in a journal
•Nature Scientific Data or Elsevier Data in Brief
•Example: Climate change dataset
•FAIR: Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and
Reusability (Wilkinson et al, 2016)

Privacy and Anonymization
•Preserve participants’ privacy:
•Consent and agreements
•It is not a binary decision
•Each region has their regulations e.g. GDPR in Europe
•Anonymize personal data before sharing:
•This process is not perfect: Reverse anonymization via
other third party data
•Example: Netflix data de-anonymized
•Some tools for anonymization like ARX or Amnesia

Conclusions
•Helps expand (and do better) research but might
represents a challenge to preserve privacy
•Some researchers are afraid of ”scooping”
• Lose the possibility to do new research
•Researchers need incentives to share their data
• Citable publications, co-authoring, awards, more value
for tenure…
•Policy from research institutions, countries and
publishers are needed to shift towards this direction
