EMMA Summer School - C. Padron-Napoles - Choosing a MOOC approach that meets ...EUmoocs
This workshop will give a good opportunity to participants to get acquainted with the main concepts taken into account in the different existing MOOC approaches from pedagogical, technical and market perspectives. This hands-on session will allow participants to establish proper mappings between learning objectives and the choices for designing and developing their MOOC considering learning, human and budgetary resources. At the end of the workshop, participants will have a better overview of how their MOOCs would look like from the design perspective and initial plans for their implementation would be prepared.

In this session we will discuss why you should or should not use video in your MOOC. Once you have decided whether video is one of the media that you will apply in your media mix, we will look at how you can produce appropriate video yourself, in your organisation or with additional, external support. We will discuss pedagogical as well as technical and organisational issues. After this session you should be able to decide whether you can and want to use video and draw up a plan to effectively produce and deploy it in your next MOOC.

Combining openness and scalability, MOOCs have been spearheading the dramatic expansion of online education in recent years. However, very different pedagogical approaches can be found in this new form of education delivery. Apart from the more typical xMOOC model and the original connectivist cMOOC alternative pedagogical approaches have been developing in Europe, pioneered by the iMOOC model. Case study. We’re not the Open University. So can we do it?Graham Gibbs
The experience of converting a face-to-face Master’s course to a wholly online, distance learning (DL) course largely following the Open University DL model but based on using and creating open educational resources (OER). Two key aspects of this conversion were that the teaching team (with one exception) were not OER enthusiasts or even experienced in DL and OER use, and that the changeover was not a special project, with special funding, but a run-of-the mill course development.
Used mentoring strategy to support research active staff to produce and use OERs.

In the Hokkaido region, Japan’s second largest island, 7 public universities are pursing such an approach, having recently concluded an agreement to cooperatively develop and deliver components of liberal arts education in a way that will leverage local characters and specializations and will integrate a credit transferring system across the consortium. As part this effort, Hokkaido University, as a leading institution in the consortium, has launched a new organization called Center for Open Education as a central part of the cooperative program. In this context, Center for Open Education simultaneously make use of OER in blended and hybrid settings to improve student engagement and learning outcomes while also contributing back to the commons MOOC and the best of consortium-developed materials. From spring semester in 2014, the consortium starts credit-bearing courses using OER on flipped classroom among institutions. In this July, Hokkaido University opens MOOC on edX reusing consortium-developed materials with English translation.

This workshop included practical exercises whereby teachers created their own video resources for use in a flipped classroom. Other presentations included inputs from teachers about specific IT related initiatives in the region. These were a project about the use of 3D with autistic children, an experience with an audience respose system and the experiences of a teacher on the use of software for web development.
Participants also learned how to re-use existing video materials in different pedagogical contexts, and explore the various different types of existing video resources which can be used for teaching and learning as well as view samples and best practices, many of which have been finalists or winners in the MEDEA Awards scheme 2008 – 2012.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
The Indian economy is classified into different sectors to simplify the analysis and understanding of economic activities. For Class 10, it's essential to grasp the sectors of the Indian economy, understand their characteristics, and recognize their importance. This guide will provide detailed notes on the Sectors of the Indian Economy Class 10, using specific long-tail keywords to enhance comprehension.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

5. What is lecture capture?
“The process using hardware and software
components for (digitally) recording, archiving and
distributing all audio and visual content of a
lecture, conference, or seminar. It is the recording of
a live lecture, presentation, seminar, conference or
workshop. Not only the person who is presenting is
recorded, but also the slides, screens, applications
or drawings ad graphs he or she is showing. Via a
web browser these recordings can then be viewed in
a single screen on PCs or other internet connected
devices.”
(Filius, 2008; REC:all, 2012)
22. Evaluate
Why is video important?
• Video allows to catch up, to re-view
• Enhances access also for off-campus students
• Video improves quality of materials
• Video improves perceived value of materials
• Video improves student engagement and
satisfaction
23. Evaluation
• Students heavily use blended technologies mainly
strategically to enhance their learning, particularly
lecture recordings, with peaks near midterms and
finals

26. Evaluation
• Students heavily use blended technologies to
enhance their learning, particularly lecture
recordings, with peaks near midterms and finals
• There are no significant statistical differences in
scoring between on (presential) and off campus
(streaming) students following the courses
27.
28. Student Reactions
• Reviewing what we covered in the session when I’m at
home allows me to take it in at my own pace, in my
own time.
• (I’m not taking this module but) just seeing these
videos was really useful.
• I missed lots of lectures and had doubts about the
course but catching up via the videos made me feel
part of the group again.
• They made revision so much easier, it brought straight
back to mind what we had covered.
29. Conclusions
Good use
• Teachers are using lecture capture
– to provide learning materials to all students
– for solving practical issues
– because students ask for it
30. Conclusions
Good use
• Teachers are using lecture capture
• Still too much classic 1 hour / 2 hour lectures
online
– policy and guides for good use of lecture capture
– using chapters and edits in online editor
– rethinking lecture structure
– promotion of knowledge clips
– screencast
– dedicated rooms
32. Needs analysis 1
• live or pre-recorded,
• online presentation,
• audio and video (different display forms),
• presenter + presentation,
• viewed in web browser,
• possibly enriched with other media and
activities,
33. Needs analysis 2
• divided in knowledge clips,
• suitable for different ways of teaching and
learning,
• presentation, seminar, workshop, tutorial, inst
ruction…
35. Implementation
• From small to large
• From DiY to OTS
• From simple to integrated
– Syllabus material (slide sets, lecture recordings)
– Quizzes, exercises and assessment
– Searchable transcripts & subtitles
– Database of related URLs,
– Student annotations & discussions
– Capture of social media discussions
– Wiki for frequently asked questions

39. Consequences
• Culture Change
• Students/faculty face different (synchronous)
learning environment
• Additional workload
• Risk of distraction, especially if technology
fails
• Copyright concerns, concerns of video
captures release
40. Lessons learnt
• Step-by-step approach
• First the innovative teachers lead the way and
others will follow ;)
• Students feedback – teachers need to know that
capturing lectures is really needed
• Simple tools to help the teachers
41. Future developments
• Subtitling and accessibility features
• Voice recognition
• Close captioning
• Automatic translation
• Social mark-up (commenting) and networking features
• Automated indexing and metadata
• Integration with VLE platforms (Virtual School
Environments)
• Assessment and testing
• Data analysis
43. Pedagogy
REC:all researches
• how lectures are currently being captured and used in the
institutions involved in the project and the wider European HE
community
• how video capture is used to underpin flexible and off-
campus modes
• create learning design patterns for innovative usages of the
captured video using based on educational social networking
