Summary Of Joseph J. Ellis The Silence In Founding Brothers
The Silence in Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis is one of the most distracting chapters in the
book. We know, and the founding brothers knew, that abolishing slavery was the right thing to do. In
this chapter Ellis tries to explain that slavery was a bigger problem than just choosing right from
wrong, and that ending slavery could divide the nation in half. This chapter describes the debate that
took place where the founding brothers had the opportunity to argue about the most volatile topic
facing the nation. The different personalities, ideologies, and compromises of the founding brothers
shaped this ongoing debate.

America s original intentions (88) were open for interpretation. Thomas Jefferson s ideology
concerning slavery was just as inspiring as his Revolutionary ideology against tyranny. In, Notes on
the State of Virginia, Jefferson wrote that all slaves born after 1800 would eventually become free (90)
.He believed that slavery should not expand into the Western territories. In the Norwest Ordinance he
wrote there shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the said territory . Jefferson s
revolutionary ideology was inspiring but not effective in solving the problems associated with slavery.
It was Madison s cautious approach, or his inaction that prevailed. He appealed to the Northerners by
acknowledging that slavery was immoral, but rejected proposing a federal law and believed that
slavery should be dealt with at the state level, which appealed to the Southerners. Madison used
political rhetoric to avoid the threats of secession of Southern states and kept the issue of slavery out
of federal control. The house debate of March 23 shifted antislavery votes in Madison s favor
prohibiting Congress from prohibiting slavery. So that Congress had no authority to interfere in the
emancipation of slaves. So the founders succeeded in taking slavery off the table for political debate.
The silence may have helped to keep things in balance while the North and South were becoming
more divided on the issue and party politics were starting to form. The course of history may have
changed if the founding fathers did not avoid the issue of slavery, or if Benjamin Franklin could have
continued to make history, but history started making

They would paint the fronts of their houses with joyful colors to eternalize the memory of Esteban,
and they would break their backs digging springs from the rocks and sowing flowers on the cliffs, so
that in the dawns of the coming years the travelers on great ships would awaken suffocating on the
aroma of gardens on the high sea (Marquez, 1972, p.4). The whole community wanted to unite as a
village to make new change to the appearance of the town so it will be a great home for Esteban. The
stranger represented a new purpose for the villagers to see that life can be beautiful, full of colors,
when they put their mind and work to it. He turned out to be the missing piece of new perspectives in
their ordinary life.
In the short story, the village was transformed into a place with new emotions and new possibilities
that would make the village extraordinary and special, making it Esteban s village. Even though there
are unsettling doubts to the story, the village found a magical element in the drowned man and
developed a positive attitude that helped the fishing village find a new perspective in life. In the end
the whole community was united though the stranger s appearing. Accepting him as their own gave

In contrast, the poem Cousin Kate is about a cottage maiden who is devastated by her ruin and is cast
aside by society. She was ruined because a great Lord found her out and lured her to his palace home
to lead a shameless shameful life and then chose her Cousin Kate and cast the narrator by. The cottage
maiden becomes destitute but has a gift that Cousin Kate is not likely to get; a son. The narrator feels
ashamed of her relationship with the Lord. She describes her life with him as shameless, shameful .
Looking back on her relationship I think she feels dirty and used because she says so now I moan an
unclean thing, who might have been a dove . The narrator is very proud of her son, despite becoming
an outcast amongst her neighbours although she feels quite the opposite way to Melia in The Ruined
Maid about her ruin. The tone of Cousin Kate is resentful about the situation in which the narrator
finds herself. This is conveyed by the use of negative language, for example, her heart is filled with
care , he lured her, her life is full of woe , she lead a shameless shameful life and she moans, an

The roof was asphalt shingle over wood shingle and the visible roof joints were lumber. Exterior walls
were wood siding. The foundation was stone. About one ton of combustible furniture were placed
inside the building and then using a plastic explosive the structure was blasted. The fire started and
developed very fast. Large portion of the roof collapsed before igniting on the exterior. The firebrands
found at the downwind area, were probably incapable of initiating a new fire.

rapid establishment of many cotton mills. The Mule , which incorporated the steam engine to increase
its output, would produce seven times as much cloth as hand operated looms. This led many
employers rushing to replace male hand weavers with machines, as noted by Richard Guest in his
