Modal verbs provide additional meaning to the main verb in a sentence and behave differently than normal verbs. There are several important differences in how modal verbs are used compared to normal verbs. Modal verbs are used to express obligation, lack of obligation, prohibition, and advice. Specifically, must is used to express strong obligation that comes from inside the speaker, have to expresses obligation from outside factors. Lack of obligation is expressed using don't have to, needn't, and doesn't need to. Prohibition uses mustn't and advice uses should and ought to.
