Bumblebees are better pollinators for high tunnel crops than honeybees. Bumblebees can forage in cooler and rainier conditions, collect both pollen and nectar, and sonicate flowers to release pollen. One bumblebee hive can pollinate up to 5,000 square feet of crops. Hives should be placed in the center of tunnels where they are visible. Proper pollination results in higher fruit set and yields for crops like tomatoes, strawberries, peppers and cucumbers. Bumblebees provide effective pollination when bite marks are observed on flowers. Too much pollination can negatively impact bee hives.
