A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Photoshoot Plan
My model is Bethany or ‘Beth’, pictured to the side, who is an intern for the magazine and is the centre of
the article and it is written from her perspective. She is 18 years old which is around the age of the
audience, which will help them relate to the article and draw them in.
In the photoshoot there will be a few props like holiday masks, pictured to the right, to make the shoot
seem fun and a bit silly which will amuse the younger end of the target audience as they may find it funny
and it will grab their attention. However, there will actually be some serious pictures mixed into the shoot
as I don’t want the magazine to be solely aimed at younger teenagers and not be taken very seriously,
therefore, there will be images I use that are more serious. These pictures will have Bethany wearing a
Christmas themed jumper with a serious expression on her face, this will be mixed with some of her
smiling and having fun. This makes the article very festive and fun.
Mise-en-scene
The background of the images I use will most likely be blank as this helps the picture blend into the
background of my magazine as then the whole look of the article is smoother and professional. However,
there will be some objects in the back of my photos, for example, a Christmas tree or decorations to make
the article look festive.
2. Locations
• Blank, coloured background
• In front of a Christmas tree
• Outside near Christmas lights
• Wrapped in fairy Christmas lights
Costumes
• Christmas jumper
• Hat, scarf and gloved
• Cosy
• Warm
• Big coats
Props
• Christmas tree
• Fairy Lights
• Gifts
• Tinsel
• Christmas gimmicks
Image Inspiration These images quite inspire me for my
photoshoot as they are very much
Christmas themed and give a very happy
atmosphere and are already loved by
people within my target audience.
3. Facial Expressions Inspiration
The kind of facial expressions I am
aiming for in my images are fun and
happy, this is because my magazine is
very light-hearted and these kinds of
photos/expressions really reflect this.
I also want these kinds of facial
expressions as I matches the theme
of the article, being very fun and free
as it has no deep connections to
serious topics; therefore the article
and photoshoot can be quite silly and
fun.
6. My edited images
Before After
I have manipulated my image by really focusing on making the
Christmas tree and my model stand out. I have done this by
blurring the background image the fireplace and stockings, as well
as sharpening the forefront image. This tool helps make the
colours within the forefront image stand out against the
background.
On this image I have removed the little part that shows the wall
behind the Christmas display as this made it look cheap and
unprofessional and I have replaced it with the burgundy background
seen in the image. I have also reduced the vibrancy of the image to
make it fade into the background of the magazine so that the words
can stand out on the page.
7. Images I am using in my final article
I have decided to only use two images on my double page
spread, one on each page as a background. This is because it
helps the magazine grip the attention of the reader as the
images are really big and standing out on the page. Also, the
minimalistic approach to images means that the teenage
target audience aren’t overwhelmed by an attack of different
images. One image grabs their attention, the other keeps it
and the article keeps them actually reading.
