The document discusses the composition and style of images to be used in a magazine. It describes using the rule of thirds to compose shots. Images will be of models representing musicians. Medium and close-up shots will be used to show facial expressions. Studio backdrops and minimal props will create a calm, simplistic aesthetic. Outfits and lighting will enhance the feminine attributes of the models to engage the audience. Location shots may also be taken to give an urban feel while maintaining a relaxed, casual impression.

2. The composition of the image is defined primarily by the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a
guideline that applies to the process of composing visual images. The image is divided into nine
equal parts, the most important elements of the image should rest along these lines or their
intersections. Where the lines meet these are called focus points, at these focus points lie the
main aspects of the image, here for example the top of her shoulders rest on the focus points,
highlighting her upper body, projecting her feminine attributes.
Here the sample image is very similar to the image I wish to compose. Beneath is another sample
image, this time of the girl I am going to use as the splash image.
Both images are centre aligned, as a result this allows spacing for the cover lines and sell lines. The
angle of the shot will be eye level conveying maximum eye contact to the reader, in turn
presenting a more personal feel. In the image I will use, there will be little head room and in turn,
the mast head will run behind the model.
Although there is risk involved due to the unfamiliarity of the magazine brand in relation to the
partially hidden mast head, this may in fact be overcome due to the widely recognised publishing
company IPC Media. IPC Media are the publishing company for my magazine and this in turn, will
help to promote it in its initial introductory stage.
The splash image will be a medium long shot, framing the whole subject from approximately the
knees up. I feel that a medium long shot is most suitable for my magazine as it provides the
opportunity to reveal more about the model, showing her expression as well as the body language
as a form of non verbal communication.
The location of the photo-shoot is going to be in a studio, however the backdrops will be adjusted
for each individual photo. For the front cover the backdrop is going to be black, and in turn the
cover lines will be shaded in a bold colour to give a strong contrast and powerful overall aesthetic
appeal.
There will be little props used on the front cover to create a minimalist and simplistic effect.
However, the costume will contain some bold elements, of which I can extract colour to then use
for the cover-lines. The costume its self will be a loose black top, to show comfort, making the
reader feel relaxed, however at the same time, black connotes formality, which will sustain the
whole magazine conventions of solemnness.

3. Likewise with the front cover, this image is divided by the rule of thirds. This trend
continues throughout each image used within my magazine. To the left are two
images. The first of a sample image of a celebrity, following similar to conventions to
those I wish to portray in my magazine. Beneath this image is a sample image of the
model I am using for the contents page of my magazine.
Both images follow similar styles. The monochrome re-colouring portrays tranquillity
and subtleness, which follows the house style of my magazine. This colouring gives a
simplistic ambience to the magazine, in turn making readers feel calm and relaxed.
Both images leave little headroom, similar to the splash image on the front cover.
The bottom image is a close up shot, I am going to use this type of image on my
contents page as it reflects the models emotions further. This allows the audience to
engage with the magazine more. The eye level shot also emphasises this further, as it
provides the opportunity for eye contact. Without eye contact the whole mood of the
image changes, it presents the subject in a different way, creating a sense of mystery.
Eye contact allows you to entice the audience in, this although still fundamental on
the contents page, is vital up on the front cover.
The costumes within this image are going to be unseen mainly, however sections
that are on show are going to be minimalistic. This is so that the outfit does not
district attention and take away from the serenity of the models expression within
the close up shot.
The location, likewise with the majority of my images is going to be in a studio. The
backdrop and positioning of props here is irrelevant, as the face is going to be
positioned centre leaving no head room or spacing around the sides. Therefore the
correct lighting is essential here, to reflect specific attributes of her face, in turn
reflecting her femininity and enhancing the theory of the male gaze. Within this
image, Jess, the model is acting as a member of a girl band.

4. Here the model within the image is also representing a member of
a band that is being promoted within my magazine. I do not want
to place all my shots within a studio, therefore I am going to take
this image outside, to create an urban feel. However, I understand
adverse weather conditions may effect my decisions to do so.
The outfits and costumes within this image is going to follow
conventions of my magazine, by being simplistic and casual, not
taking anything away from the image and not diverting attention
away from the overall feel of the image itself.
The use of props within this image is going to be vital. As the
magazine that I am producing is a music magazine, there needs to
be evidence of the models having a relation to the music industry.
The guitar in this image is going to signify harmony, putting across a
very divergent feel to that of Kerrang.
The image below is taken using a model (Bonnie Milnes), similar to
the model I am going to use for my images. The bottom image is a
medium long shot, which reveals more of the model, allowing for
different positioning's of the guitar. In both images a sufficient
amount of head room has been left which in a way gives credence
to the back ground, showing the surrounding location. This
provides the opportunity to build up a scene around the model,
which in turn would give off a different impression to the audience.

5. The close up, eye level shot represents the conventions of the image I am going to
use of my contents page. Similar to the previous images the girl focused up on in this
image is also going to be part of a band.
I am using this type of shot for similar reasons. The engaged focus creates a
mesmerizing look which creates attraction between the audience and the image. This
may encourage potential consumers to buy the magazine, therefore the use of close
up shots are vital. The positioning and slight tilt of the head fits into the intersections
of the thirds, which shows a well structured image. In addition, the head movement
creates a playful feel and makes the image appear more engaging rather than a
straight shot.
I have purposely chosen the majority of models with dark hair, as I feel this highlights
specific areas of the face more, such as the eyes. In addition, dark colour connote
mystery which can often make the audience interested.
The location of this shot is going to be in a studio, with a black backdrop. Although
the backdrop will not be seen, it will create a setting for me to manipulate the way
the light reflects to create some flash spots and some areas of darkness and shading.
In this image the model will be wearing a low cut top, although no cleavage or other
areas will be show this creates a more natural look, which creates a personal feel to
the audience involving them more.
The expression of the model (Fran) will be vague. Creating a feel for perplexity and
enigma. The dominant code within this image will be secrecy and subtlety. Along with
the negotiated code being mystery and puzzlement.

6. The model used for this image is going to act as an individual artist, her focus
within the magazine will be an article (double page spread) surrounding her life
within the music industry.
The shot type I am going to use will be a medium close up, as seen in the top
image. A medium close up allows me to look at the subject in great detail
however it also allows for the use of props to create a more vibrant scene. The
image below is a sample image also however a photo that I took, this image is
just to represent the type of style I am going for.
In both images, the rule of thirds identifies the main focus within the image,
which for both is their faces. Highlighting their facial expressions is essential
within this image as my intentions are for them to be singing, with the aid of a
microphone as a prop. The props such as the microphone and the headphones,
relate exactly to the music industry and also create a story in one image.
The location is going to be in a studio, with a white backdrop. This sets the
scene as though they are recording a song. I may in fact include more than one
of these images, as a conventional contents page includes multiple images.
The costumes used for the model with this image are going to vibrant to
contrast with the background, allowing them to stand out more. A great deal of
the outfit is not going to be seen, however the small proportion that is will
contribute towards the scene setting of the image.
The body language here is also essential for the dominant code, this is what I
wish for the image to ‘say’. I want to create a casual ambience therefore the
body language needs to connote relaxed and calm feelings.

7. The contents page is going to contain a similar image to that of the double page
spread, including the same girls in the same composition. This will be positioned next
to the text that highlights the article page that they are on. This allows for easy
navigation of the readers.
The image on the bottom is also a sample image, this also represents the style of
image I am going to create.
The location will be in a studio with the use of backdrops and props for manipulation
of the image.
The costumes will be relatively formal however party attire, that in turn reflects the
vibrant life style of a pop star. The shot type is going to be a mid-shot, this way I can
capture the body language more effectively so that I am able to express specific
characteristics through non-verbal communication.
This is going to be a low angle shot, looking up at the subjects in a way that the
readers would look up to them. Giving them dominance and providing potential idols
for the readers. This encourages engagement more which in turn will encourage
repeat customers. The girls, in addition will be positioned close together. This
denotes friendship and in turn connotes happiness and warmth. The use of colour Is
also vital, the black connotes formality and mystery whilst the white connotes
innocence and calmness. The only bold use of colour within this image will be within
the makeup. Through doing this I am then able to pick out colours to use for
surrounding cover-lines and sell lines. The main colour will be the lipstick which will
be a bold pink/red colour. This connotes passion and love and a true desire for
something which may be a trait the readers can relate to, in turn also creating a
personal feel.

8. My double page spread is going to be made up of one image taking up the
majority of the right hand page. I am doing this so it clarifies my intentions. It
provides a clear insight to the reader when browsing the magazine of what my
article is going to be about. The image composition is going to involve threefour models who are posing as a band. The image is going to be a medium
long shot, however whilst experimenting I may decide to use a long shot or an
extreme long shot to reveal more about the subjects. Therefore the costume
and over all mise-en-scene of this image is vital.
The location is going to be a studio, however the backdrop may be
manipulated to form a dressing room or a setting which in itself reflects the
background life of the music industry. I am doing this so that the readers feel
through reading the article they have a much clearer insight into this lifestyle.
The girls within the image are going to be in evening attire to create a party
atmosphere. In addition, this also reflects the glamour of this lifestyle.
The angle of this shot is going to be slightly tilted in a low view. This way the
camera looks up to the subjects, in a way that the audience may look up to
them as idols.
The rule of thirds is vital here as it separates the most important elements of
the image. The faces of the models will be positioned within the top sections,
the bodies and main elements of the outfit within the middle sections, and
the legs and perhaps shoes if an extreme long shot will be in the bottom
sector.
This way the audience will see the full length of the subjects and perhaps
through this re-create the style of the models for themselves.
