My masthead on my front cover is the title
of my magazine ‘Pop Central’. I got this
idea from my magazine survey as this was
the title with the most votes from my target
audience. My masthead starts off my house
style for my magazine as it contains the
logo that I repeat at the bottom of the
front cover.
The house style of my magazine is shown
throughout by using the colours pink and light
blue. I have used these colours as my
background for my front cover and made them
fade into each other as a gradient. I did this in
Photoshop to avoid my background looking like
blocks of colour. My choice of colours in my
house style is very gender specific, because pink
is typically associated with girls. I did this
because my magazine is more aimed at girls
than boys.
At the bottom of my front cover of my
magazine there are links to social
media(Spotify, Twitter and Facebook). This
is how my magazine is like other real
media products in the industry, as it is
creating prosumers by using multi-touch
platforms. This is how synergy and
convergence is used, because my
audience can interact on multiple
platforms. Social media links will attract to
my audience of teenagers and young
adults because they use social media
every day.
As my magazine is aimed more at girls, I
made sure that my main article was based
on a female artist to interest them.
However, whilst sticking to the female
theme, by making my front cover feature
an image of a female artist, this may also
interest males as they may be fans as
well. I wanted my magazine to mainly be
for girls, but I didn’t want it to not appeal
to boys at all. The way I have done this is
by making sure that the main article isn’t
about typical girl topics such as makeup.
By having an interview with an artist it is
open to everyone.
I included a freebie which I have put in a box-out. I have done this in order
to grab the readers/audience’s attention. A freebie interests people because
everyone looks on a magazine front cover to see if there is anything for free,
as it is an extra they will receive when buying the magazine. Also, by putting
it in a box-out, it stands out on the front cover.
The main image on my front cover is of
me from my photo-shoot. I edited this
original image using Photoshop. I made
the colours lighter and reduced the
shadows. I did this because I wanted the
image to be bright and stand out instead
of a dull boring image that wouldn’t
catch anyone’s attention. Also, this is a
summer edition of my magazine, so I
wanted everything to look bright and
summery to link in with the theme.I included some box-outs to show my audience where
inside the magazine they will find the main stories
featured on my front cover, inside my magazine. This is
part of my house style that I carry through my
magazine onto my contents page.
My double page spread follows my house style of
my magazine. I did this by carrying my colours of
pink through onto my main article. I went with a
simple light pink background to work on top. I got
my inspiration from a ‘Nicki Minaj’ example online
and adapted my house style into it. I used the aspect
of incorporating a hint of gold text into my double
page spread like I did on the front cover. Again,
another
example of the inspiration I
found online.
I used my example double page spread of a real
media product to influence my double page
spread on Page Plus. I used page plus because I
can manipulate the text and arrange it correctly. I
used the layout around my image the way they
did in the example of ‘Nicki Minaj’ and I included
four interview questions.
My image is one of my own
originals from my photo-
shoot. I edited the image in
Photoshop and then
exported it into my page
plus to add it onto my
double page spread on
Page Plus. I cut around my
image in Photoshop as
there was a white
background that I needed
to get rid of to place onto
my pink page. I did this
using the ‘Lasso tool’ on
Photoshop to cut around
the image of me jumping in
the air. We captured this
image in the photo-shoot
by using the shutter mode
on the camera to take lots
of pictures at a high speed
as I jumped into the air.
As you can see, I used a box out to grab my audience’s attention when they
open onto my double page spread. I created my box out by using a simple
circle on Page Plus and filling it with a textured-effect colour of pink and
white. I then added a gold flower to continue my house theme with my
colours throughout my product. In the box out, there is a pull quote from my
main article interview. By doing this, it interests my audience and makes them
want to read more on what I have included in the box out.
Following my house theme
of my magazine, I not only
carried my colour theme of
pink through my pages, but
I also continued the theme
of appealing to a female
audience throughout. The
main article featured on my
double page spread is
based on a female artist,
and her interview is very
much based around ‘Girl
Power’. I included this
second pull quote from the
article in order to appeal to
females. This is because
they will want to read an
interview based around a
female who is ‘doing it for
the girls’ and promoting girl
power.
Continuing onto my contents page, I made
sure to include the colour pink again. This
connects with my target audience of
females and my ongoing house style. I also
added in the hint of gold to make the link
between every page, and it also makes my
font stand out. On this page I took
inspiration from an example contents page
that included different fonts in the title to
make the title look more interesting. I used
3 different fonts and 3 different colours in
order to achieve this.
I made a box out for the right hand side of
my contents page on Page Plus. I filled it in
with a brighter pink for it to stand out and
grab the audiences attention. Inside the
box out is a polaroid picture of another
image from my photo-shoot. I created the
image into a polaroid picture using
Photoshop. I did this by finding a polaroid
picture frame online and inserting my
image into it using Photoshop. I then used
the tools on Photoshop to edit the
background to white for it to stand out
inside the frame. Once I added it onto my
contents page on Page Plus, I added some
simple text of the artist’s name that is
featured on my double page spread.
Underneath this I included a screenshot of
my double page spread which is my main
article, which links to my image in the
polaroid as it’s about the same artist. I then
added a simple circle to present what page
inside my magazine this would be found on
as it is my main article. By featuring a sneak
peak of the double page spread it shows
that it is the most important/main part of
my magazine and makes it stand out.
Underneath where I have featured my main
article, I included a picture that I took of my
friend Patricia during the photo-shoot. I
used this image to create a comment from
an ‘Editorial Manager’ to make it look
professional. This is because in examples of
magazines, there is always a comment from
the editorial manager.
The left side of my contents page
mainly consists of some of the main
topics featured inside my magazine. I
used large, bold, pink text for my page
numbers to stand out and fit my house
style. I included topics such as ‘Gossip!’
and ‘Album of the month’ because
these were things that my audience said
they would like to see included in my
magazine when I did my survey. I also
included freebies in order to interest my
audience and make them buy my
magazine. These were things such as
‘Poster Central’ and ‘Win tickets to V-
Fest’. By including free posters of artists
and a chance to win tickets to festivals
that my audience would be interested
in, I will sell more magazines. I made
sure they were genre-specific for my
niche audience, young people who are
interested in Pop music.
I made sure to include topics that would appeal
to females. For example ‘Summer Must Haves’
and ‘Boy Trouble’. These are topics that are
mainly aimed towards a female audience that I
am targeting. However, I included my main
article of an interview and also ‘Love Life Secrets’
that anyone would be interested in. This helps
me to widen my audience.
