Metals and non-metals have distinct properties. Metals are typically solid, shiny, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity. They have high melting points and densities. Non-metals are usually dull, brittle, poor conductors, and have lower melting points and densities than metals. Metals tend to lose electrons in bonds while non-metals typically gain electrons.

• Most metals are SOLID at room
temperature.
• Have a TENSILE STRENGTH.
• Good CONDUCTORS of HEAT &
ELECRICITY.
• They are DUCTILE , MALLEABLE ,
SONORUS.
• Have LUSTURE.

8. MON METALS
• Many nonmetals are gases at room temperature.
• Nonmetals are usually lustreless , ( except graphite )&
iodine, brittle , bad conductors of heat & electricity ( graphite
) & nonsonorous ( i.e. , they do not produce a metallic clink).
• From the 24 nonmetals known today : -
• 12 are solids ( e.g. carbon, silicon, phosphorus etc).
• 1 is a liquid ( e.g. bromine). &
• 11 are gases ( e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen.

10. PROPERTIES OF NON-METALS
• Nonmetals do not have
luster; they are dull.
• BRITTLE, Nonmetals are brittle so
they break easily. this means
nonmetals are not ductile or
malleable.
• Nonmetals have low density.
• They also have a low melting
point. This is why they are
poor conductors of heat and
electricity.
