The apical meristem is located at the tips of shoots and roots and is responsible for growth. It contains a shoot apical meristem that produces new leaves, flowers, and stems, as well as a root apical meristem located at the root tip that produces new root cells. The intercalary meristem is located between the root tip and the stem and allows for growth and elongation.
