Meniscal tears often occur during sports involving twisting of the knee. Symptoms include stiffness, swelling, pain, catching or locking of the knee. Diagnosis involves physical exams like the McMurray test and imaging like x-rays and MRI. For small, outer edge tears without persistent symptoms, nonsurgical treatment with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and drugs is often sufficient. Surgery to trim or repair the tear may be recommended for persistent symptoms and involves arthroscopic procedures with rehabilitation over 1-3 months.
