What sort of media
institution might
distribute your product
and why?
What is a media institution?
A media institution is an established and often
profit based organisation that deal in the
creation and distribution of
advertising, entertainment and information
services.
Here are some examples of media
institutions:
Bauer Media Group
Bauer media group is a multinational media company headquarters in
Germany. It operates in seventeen countries worldwide. Since the company
was founded in 1875 it has ben privately owned and under management by
the Bauer family. It is Europe's largest privately owned publishing group.
Positives:
 Years of experience
 Very popular worldwide
 Well known company
 Positive reputation
As you can see to the right
hand side Bauer Media use
social media for example:
Facebook and Twitter to
promote their company.
Box Television
Bauer Media Group has a fifty percent stake in the British television
company Box Television and the other half is owned by Channel 4. Box
Television acts as the content subsidiary that produces several popular music
television channels these include:
• 4Music
• The Box
• Heat
• Kerrang!
• Kiss
• Magic
• Smash Hits
(They also have a radio station called Bauer Radio.)
Germany
USA
Spain
France
Austria
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Hungary
Czech Republic
Mexico
China
Russia

Nigeria
Australia
IPC Media
IPC media stands for International Publishing Corporation and is a consumer
magazine and digital publisher in the UK. They have more than 60 media
brands and IPC creates content for multiple platforms: across
print, online, mobile, tablets and events. They engage with 26 million UK
adults which is almost two thirds of UK women and over 40% of UK men.
Their award winning portfolio of websites reach over 25 million global users
every month.
Positives:
 Years of experience
 Very popular within the UK
 Well known company
 Positive reputation As you can see above IPC Media use
social media like ‘Twitter’ to promote
their company.
My Chosen Media Institution
I have decided to use Bauer Media for my media
institution for my pop music magazine. This is
mainly due to the years of experience that the
company have had as well as their dominance
within the market and popularity throughout the
whole world and not just in the UK. The target
audience for Bauer is a huge variety of people
encouraging people that wouldn’t necessarily be
interested in my product to try something new and
different. I think my product would be successful
and effective within this media institution and
would have a positive impact on my product.
How I want my product to be
distributed…
In relation to distribution of my product I would want it to be easily accessible
at all times. This would increase the audience as a lot more people would be
exposed to the product itself. I would want my magazine to be available on
portable devices as well as in a hard copy format because a lot of the
successful magazines already on the market today have lots of different ways
of viewing their products. I would also want my music magazine to have their
own website as well as being involved on the Bauer website with the other
magazines. Some people purchase products from big chains such as super
markets and other big stores therefore I would want my music magazine to be
on the market in these stores also these stores are worldwide. My product
will be available easily around the whole of the world not just the United
Kingdom.
This is what my
music magazine
front cover would
look like if it was
viewed on an
iPhone from the
Charts website or
from a link from
the Bauer website.
This is what my
music
magazine front
cover would
look like if it
was viewed on
an iPad from
the iTunes
magazine
store.
Below are examples of websites for
four pop music magazines currently on
the market…
Below are eight large retailers that I
would like to sell my product…
