Question 3
1.
2. Media institutions
A media institution is a company that owns
numerous companies involved in
mass media enterprises, such as television,
radio, publishing, cinema etc. Each institution
covers a huge range of media topics in an effort
to branch out to the largest audience. This
means that the same company will be
publishing, for example a classical music
magazine as well as a fishing magazine or
hosting a radio channel.
3. Examples of media institutions
Bauer - a European media company, based
in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of
over 600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50
radio and TV stations around the world. Bauer
media publish q magazine, mojo, as well as
kerrang. Although these are very much similar
magazines, they do share slight differences. This
shows how Bauer attempt to branch out to the
maximum target audience. The fact that they
already have multiple music magazines under
their name also shows that there is clearly a place
for my magazine, so i can be confident that it will
sell. Also Bauer is one of the more well known
media institutions as a result people will see my
magazine as more of a legitimate product than if it
were to be on other institutions.
4. Immediate media co - a combined publishing
house containing the former assets of origin
publishing, Magicalia and BBC Magazines. It
was formed on 1 November 2011 and is owned
by Exponent Private Equity. Immediate Media
Co. publishes over 70 interest-based, multi-
platform brands, maintains over 50 websites,
and employs over 1100 staff. This institution
however only publishes bbc music and the
radio times. Compared to others this is a very
limited choice aimed at more of the older
generation. My magazine on the other hand is
aimed at younger people, who show an interest
in more up to date topics.
5. Time inc UK - a wholly owned subsidiary
of Time Inc., is a consumer magazine and
digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with
a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies
each year. Time inc publish NME and Uncut.
These are both music magazines. NME is
aimed at more current music while Uncut looks
at older styles of rock. I think that this would
apply well to my magazine as aimed to include
both current and older styles of rock music. I
feel that they could develop my magazine well
due to this and make the younger generation
more aware of older music.
6. Which media institution will I use to distribute my
magazine?
After looking at multiple media institutions i have
decided that the one i feel is most appropriate for
my magazine is Bauer. This is because they have
already published a few music magazines,
therefore showing that they have knowledge in the
area. Due to this i can rely on them to aim my
magazine at the correct target audience with the
best selling rate. Also if people are to see a media
product under the name of Bauer media they
instantly know that the product is going to be
genuine and worth reading. Bauer media
compared to other companies is alot bigger and
known well all over the world.
