We’ve shared a lot of data about whether and why ‘this time is different’. But beyond that, why is the tech market opportunity larger than any time in history (no, really!)? One word: mobile.
In this update of his past presentation on Mobile Eating the World — delivered this month at Andreessen Horowitz’ annual investor meeting — a16z’s Benedict Evans shares just how and why mobile changes everything. Because tech is outgrowing the tech industry.
In this update of his past presentations on Mobile Eating the World -- delivered most recently at The Guardian's Changing Media Summit -- a16z’s Benedict Evans takes us through how technology is universal through mobile. How mobile is not a subset of the internet anymore. And how mobile (and accompanying trends of cloud and AI) is also driving new productivity tools.
In fact, mobile -- which encompasses everything from drones to cars -- is everything.
For one week each year Sin City plays host to the next-generation of innovations and technologies before they’re introduced to the marketplace. This year, more than 200,000 attendees came to CES to walk through 2.5 million square feet of trade show space to see the latest drones, connected cars, TVs and smartphones, and even a VR device that gives you the sensation of flying through the sky like a superhero.

There is no point in drawing a distinction between the future of technology and the future of mobile. They are the same. In other words, technology is now outgrowing the tech industry.

Mobile is NOT a Channel - Rob Griffin at IMMAP Summit, 2012Havas Media
Rob Griffin, EVP Product Development at Havas Digital, spoke recently at the IMMAP Summit & emphasised 3 clear takeaways-
1. Mobile is Now, and you must know that. Embrace a Mobile First approach to all marketing and communications efforts.
2. Accept the multiplicity of the device. Mobile devices are consumers' constant companions and central to their daily lives.
3. Activate and Engage! Take full advantage of mobile's greater capabilities to engage in real time.
Instead of thinking about mobile as an advertising channel, it is more important to view it as an access point for consumers- hence the urgent need for everything to be mobile enabled from the start. Mobile Internet user growth is projected to hit 3.5billion in 2015- how are you positioning your brand to take advantage of this revolution?

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

ABOUT THIS REPORT
Welcome to the latest edition of the Endava Quarterly Innovation Report.
The aim of these reports is to share some of the latest innovative projects that caught our
attention across the wider marketplace.
Traditionally, businesses competed with others in the same industry, but now modern businesses
compete with new digital competitors, as well as those who work in different market sectors.
This report serves to show our customers what is going on beyond their traditional competitors.
During our client workshops we often present these quarterly reports to provide some inspiration
for clients who are starting their digital transformation programme. And last, but by no means
least, thank you to all our Endava colleagues who provided suggestions for projects to be
included in this quarter’s report.

MEETINGS WILL NEVER BE
THE SAME AGAIN
I’ll bet you didn't know that the NY Times has an R&D lab
that produces next generation products. One of these
products is the listening table which enables conversations
to be recorded, transcribed – and also using some clever
algorithms – captures the semantics used as well as
sentiment. During a meeting you can also tap the table to
set a marker for an important point to review later.
This is an interesting concept for meetings and they have
even added an off switch so you can opt out!

5. GOOGLE IS LISTENING
Google have entered the home personal assistant area with
Google Home, which directly competes with Amazon’s Echo,
which we have mentioned in other reports. Google Home is
a device that is always listening to you and can perform
tasks in your connected home and also give you information
from Google.
“We are evolving search to be much more assistive,” said
Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO. “We want users to have a
two-way ongoing dialogue with Google to help get things
done in the real world. We think of this as building each user
their own individual Google.”
Watching the video, it’s a bit creepy that there is always
something listening to what you say at home... I hope it
knows when you are being sarcastic!

6. FULLY INTERACTIVE
ADVERTISING
Coca-Cola always push the boundaries with technology on
advertising and their latest campaign is no different. They have
teamed up with Shazam to enable them to “pour you a drink”
through one of their adverts and then be able to redeem this
for a drink at a retailer. They have used all different advert
types from print to TV and also in-stadium.
We really like the use of technology to interact with the
physical world and get something free!

7. ULTRA-THIN DISPLAYS
If you thought your latest TV was thin, take a look at this video
of a display that is only 3 micrometres thin – which is thinner
than your skin.
The possibilities are endless. Not only can the technology
display information, it can also detect oxygen flow, and
be crumpled.
Together with the touchscreen watch in this report, this could
be the ideal future device.

DRONE CAFE
A university cafe in the Netherlands now delivers drinks to
customers via drones.
One drone takes your order and another delivers the drinks.
The company hasn’t said how the drinks are made – perhaps
there’s no replacement for a decent barista. Yet.

9. A SMART BUTTON
Amazon was allegedly under pressure from developers to
make its Dash button (covered in our Q3 2015)
programmable.
Enter the Amazon IoT button, a fully customizable wireless
appliance. You can program the button to do just about
anything… from unlocking your car, to switching the lights
on, or sending a text message.
We like the price tag of $20, which makes it cheaper than
a Raspberry Pi and other similar Wi-Fi devices.

PAPER TRANSPARENCY
We like the transparency of the Financial Times who have
started an engineering blog describing their latest approaches
and projects.
In articles such as “A Faster FT.com” the team provide real
world statistics on web performance and user behaviour,
answering questions like “At what speed (or lack of) do users
stop using the site?” This was also mapped against advertis-
ing and subscription revenue.
We commend FT.com on its openness and look forward to
future articles.

11. TOUCHSCREEN WATCH
One of the limitations of a smartwatch is the screen size.
Enter Skintrack, a smartwatch that together with a special
finger ring, can use your forearm as a touchscreen.
The touchscreen area, or forearm, has more functionality
than a traditional screen, because it can work in three
dimensions – whereas a smartphone can only detect
touch rather than a ‘hover’ motion.
We really like Skintrack (although the ring needs some
more finessing) and think this could be the future of
input interfaces.

MORE PHONE PARTS
Here’s an interesting project concept from Google – a phone
made of several parts which can be swapped out. If you
need a better camera or a better speaker, simply swap out
those components.
The development community also liked the concept – so
much so that Google have had to temper enthusiasm and
admit some components such as screen and processor are
hardwired into the exoskeleton-based design.
Right now, we’d like to be able to swap out just the battery
on our phones...

13. BETTER IDENTITY
At Endava we’re really interested in how electronic identity will
be implemented, to prove who a user is over the Internet. Enter
Yoti, who use passports as the main identity assurance, and
selfies to validate the user is the passport holder.
Yoti is still in development, and we’re interested to see how the
public adopt the technology.

BANK CHATBOTS
Digibank is a new Indian bank that is staffed by chatbots –
automated robo advisors which can hold a conversation as
well as a human.
2016 was touted the year of robots, and halfway through the
year this prediction is turning out to be correct.
The chatbots were designed by the same company that
produced Apple’s Siri product, and have been taught millions
of questions about personal banking.

15. COMPUTER IMAGINATION?
Vicarious is a two year old startup (which made us question
“When does a startup stop being labelled a start up?”) which
has a completely different approach to Artificial Intelligence.
The Vicarious algorithm is able to answer the question “What
if?” and rather than take in lots of data to try and learn, it
learns in a way which more closely resembles the human brain
– in what the company currently calls ‘imagination’.
So far, Vicarious is able to counteract CAPTCHA input, which
traditionally can detect a human from a computer. In the
coming months, Vicarious will begin publishing its two years’
worth of research, and will showcase its technology in robots.

16. SMART CLOTHING (AT SOME
SERIOUS SCALE)
We had to read this report twice. And check it wasn’t an April
Fools Day. Avery Dennison (of packing fame) and Evrything are
joining forces to create Internet connected clothes… 10 billion
articles of clothing.
There will be new business models created for connected
clothing – business models which don’t exist yet.

17. NO MORE CHARGING
A student from Cluj, Romania has developed an integrated
panel for mobile phones that doesn’t just use solar energy. It
can convert energy from motion, Wi-Fi, GPS, GSM, satellite,
and radio. This means that you will never have to charge your
phone again.
It does need some work on the design as it looks like
someone just unscrewed the hinge from their door to bolt
it on!

INCREMENTAL RELEASES
FROM TESLA
Tesla have admitted rolling out updates to its production cars
without notifying drivers, all in the attempt to gather more data
for its autonomous driving strategy.
As a lesson to other companies, Tesla explained that it uses
the always – connected features of its cars to download
updates and retrieve vast amounts of data. So far, it has
collected over 780 million miles of driving data (and every ten
hours Tesla gets another million miles worth of data). One
interesting insight is that human drivers prefer not to drive in
the centre of a lane, by comparison to automated drivers.
This type of inert, over the air background update provides an
example to companies that demonstrates ways to gather data
to continually improve their products.

19. SMARTENING UP YOUR CAR
New cars now come with smart connected technology built in, but
this device from Automatic can upgrade your older car to become
smart. All you need to do is plug it into the data port of your car
and it can provide you with diagnosis of engine problems, provide
fuel efficiency scoring, car location, and automatic crash notifica-
tions to emergency services as well as friends and family. Users
can view this data through a comprehensive dashboard.
We think this is quite clever, but we question how often car owners
will really use Automatic's features, potentially limiting its appeal.
