The front cover of Essence magazine features a picture of Tyra Banks. Above the masthead in small print is a strap line that indicates the magazine is targeted towards black women. A rhetorical question is used as a cover line to pique readers' interest in an upcoming article about marriage proposals. Bold white text stands out against the magazine's mainly brown color scheme, catching the eye from a distance. The cover aims to engage black women readers by featuring a black model and addressing issues like depression that are relevant to that audience.

3. Analysis of the front cover of ‘Essence’ The front cover of this magazine has a picture of Tyra Banks, a common well known model. The masthead is purposely fitted at the top in order to catch the consumer attention when on the self, this is in contrast with the same colour shade as the dress the model wears. Above the masthead is a strap line in small print saying: ‘Exclusive...Black Americans Vote you immediately know this magazine is targeted at black women as we get the idea by the black model. The magazine also have a rhetorical question ‘Will you marry me?’ long with the page number, this is a cover line as the audience picks up the magazine they will find an article of ways how men prose. This will target consumers who are romantic and like reading romantic stories. The colour scheme of the magazine is mainly brown therefore the creator of the magazine uses white font so that the words stand out against the brown background. If you was to see this magazine from far the bold white texts will catch your eye. Colours can have different associations, however or this magazine there is a brow/gold colour used to symbolise glam and calm. The mood these colours create are in the title, dress, eyes and complexion of the model setting a happy and relaxing mood. If someone was a an of Tyra Banks they would pick up this magazine as they admire her despite knowing anything about the magazine. Tyra Banks poses naturally, her hair is done with volume and make-up done not too much to lightly to convey natural beauty. The framing of the magazine is a close up on Tyra Banks showing her features/emotion on her face. Behind is a plain background however she covers most of the page. You first notice the insert image of Tyra, in my opinion consumers are more likely to read the writing in bold as it more likely the information is interesting which is why it is purposely in bold. ‘ Black women and depression- this language on the front cover gives us the information we will find inside. People who are suffering from depression will confine in this magazine to deal with depression. I would say the sort o reader that this magazine will not address to is everyone other than black women as they are unlikely to relate to any of the issues written in the article e.g. ‘women and depression’ so the only type of women that can relate to this is black women.
