Type – General Magazine
Fashion Magazine (beauty, fashion, lifestyle)
Target Audience – 20-35 year old women
Harper’s Bazaar appeals to the target audience through the key image
featured on the front of the magazine. The key image is normally a
woman around the same age as the target audience and may be an icon
to the reader or somebody that they look up to. Normally the key image
is of shoulder height and above, this is showing the main focus on
beauty as it plays a big part in today’s society. The colour scheme of the
magazine makes it clear who the target audience is because the pop of
colour is pink, the colour that is stereotypically linked to females. The
magazine is more of a high end magazine, this can be seen in the
masthead as the font is tall and elegant, this is commonly seen on the
cover of other high-end fashion magazines.

Type – Specialist Magazine
(health and fitness)
Target Audience – 25 – 35 year old men
The layout of the magazines is quite basic, there aren’t any bright colours in the
background or on the key image’s clothing , there is a lot of white space so that the focus
is on the key image and the sell lines. The key image is of Ryan Reynolds an actor that is
attractive to women, men may want to be like him or look like him because they know
that men find him attractive. A lot of young men care about their appearance and want to
have good muscles, the sell lines encourage the reader to buy the magazine eg. one of
them says ‘GREAT ABS MADE EASY!’. This sell line will make the reader wants to buy the
magazine so that they can find out how to get the good muscles they want with an easy
process and not constant working out. All of the sell lines on the cover are in capital
letters, this means that they are more likely to get the reader’s attention because it seems
important.
Type – Specialist Magazine
(food)
Target Audience – 40-50 year old women
Unlike other magazines the key image is of food not a person, this is because the main
theme of the magazine is food. Other magazines choose somebody that the reader will
want to be or to look like as their key image, in this case the key image is of something that
the reader wants to be able to make. As the food is featured on the cover this means that
there is likely to be the recipe in the magazine. Along the bottom of the cover are images
of other foods and one famous chef and one famous baker. If the reader is a fan of either
the chef or the baker then they may be more influenced to buy the magazine especially if
there are some of their recipes in there. One of the sell lines says ‘Plan your perfect
Christmas’ this will appeal to the target audience that are planning food for their Christmas
dinner and will want to use recipes that will both look good and taste good.
Colour Palettes
The colour scheme reflects the target audience for this
magazine, females, this is shown for the bright colours and
the pop of pink. Yellow and pink are also colours that are
reflecting the spring season.
This colour scheme reflects the magazines business theme
and the target audience that is mostly men. The black and
red suggest a strong business look.
The cover of this magazine is mostly white space but then
there is a pop of colour with a pale yellow, which may be
following a seasonal trend at the time that the magazine
came out.
GQ magazine tends to have a recurring colour scheme of
grey and red. The masculine colour scheme may be
chosen making it clear that the target audience is men.
The music magazine appeals to both males and females,
this means that the colour scheme is picked carefully so
that it does not appeal to one gender over another
through the use of stereotypical colours.
The colour scheme for this magazine was not chosen
based on a gender, it was instead chosen to
represent the theme of the magazine. The readers of
this magazine are mostly rock or heavy metal music
fans, these colours are commonly used when
representing these styles of music.

Genre Conventions
All of the magazines on my mood board are fashion magazines e.g. ELLE,
Vogue and Harper’s BAZAAR that cost between £4 - £6. The magazines
are more expensive than other magazines, e.g. gossip magazines which cost
£1 or less, because they are popular in most countries and show high-end
fashion clothing and promote big designers. The key image is of either a
female model, actress or music artist. Often only the top half of their body
will be shown with the focus on their face due to society’s focus on beauty.
The clothes that they wear will be based on upcoming trends and represent
what the editors advise the readers should be wearing. The target
audience for these magazines are mostly women aged between 20 – 35.
The masthead has one of the letters covered, this is common on a lot of fashion magazines as they are very popular and readers
already know the magazine well. The key image is covering the ‘L’ from the masthead, as the image is taking up more room of the
magazine this ensures that Miley Cyrus is the centre of attention. The font of the masthead always has to remain the same as it
becomes what the readers recognise it by, the font represents the magazine. The font is a serif font which makes it appear elegant,
sharp and professional, which is exactly the image that the magazine wants to portray.
The anchorage text is to the left of the
magazine and informs the reader what
the focus of Miley Cyrus’s interview
will be about, ‘SEXUALITY THE NEW
FRONTIER’. The interview may be of
interest to the star’s fans or readers
that want to know more about her. The
size of the text is bigger than the other
text on the cover, this is because it is
linked to the key image and is the
largest article in the magazine. This text
needs to be one of the first things that
the reader looks at and should make
them want to buy the magazine. The
font is sans serif font, this makes it
appear more softer while still bold
compared to the masthead which is in a
serif font.
Miley Cyrus is the key image on the magazine, the upper part of her boy is shown with her
stomach on show, she has got a skinny frame and this outfit is promoting her physique and
readers may be envious of her figure. Although her body is exposed the outfit itself consists of a
blazer, this is aimed at the target audience who are employed and may wear blazers often, this
shows that the reader can make them attractive. Using a female star as the key image this
portrays the magazines target audience of females an d the star is a similar age to the target
audience as well. The star has a direct mode of address, this will connect her with the reader as
she is looking straight at them and may encourage them to buy it.
This sell line promises that the magazine
will give tips on ‘HOW TO GET A DATE’.
This effectively shows the target
audience of the magazine as the women
that are reading this are mostly people
that haven’t settled down and had a
family, they are most likely still dating.
The font is sans serif , the same as all
other text on the cover, it is in bold so
that it will stand out to the reader and
encourage them to buy it. Readers may
want the magazine because they feel that
the tips will be a benefit to them.
The colour scheme for this issue is black
and white with splashes of colour in the
background. The main colours are
monochrome which is a representation of
the main colours in fashion right now and
into the upcoming months. Monochrome
is a slick and simple design, the editors
have channelled this and used it with a
twist by adding the splash of colour so
that it is still eye catching when amongst
other magazines which may have a
brighter colour scheme.
The masthead is at the top of the contents page, this shows the title of the magazine clearly and is
surrounded by white space which makes it stand out and makes it appear more simplistic and
sophisticated. This is different to the masthead on the cover, as on the contents page you can see the word
clearly without a letter being covered by the key image.
In the bottom right hand corner of
the contents page there is a series
of by- lines. These state
information about the cover of the
magazine, who took the picture,
who the key image is etc. This
gives credit to the people that put
together the cover and will show
readers the people behind the
process., which may be something
that they are interested in.
The contents page is arranged
into columns which makes it
seem sleek and uncluttered.
There are small headings with
each section of the contents
page. Four of them are in black
which are the features in the
magazine that features every
month, however the other three
are bright colours. Bright colours
are used to add a pop of colour to
the colour page as the main
colour scheme of the issue is
black and white. The coloured
headings are the sections that the
magazine wants to stand out to
the readers as sections that are
different to the common themes
of fashion and beauty. In this
issue there is a section on Travel
and on Street fashion. The font is
sans serif which is similar to the
text on the cover of the magazine,
this makes it a continuing theme.
The subheadings are bold and a
lot bigger than the text below it,
this makes it easier for readers to
look for articles in a certain
section e.g. Beauty.
There is a picture use of somebody that is going to be a
focus in one of the magazine articles. Some magazines use
this to capture the readers attention and to add something
to the contents page so that it isn’t just text which would
makes it more eye-catching to a reader flicking through the
magazine.
The colour scheme for the cover of
the magazine is monotone, and this
has carried through into the contents
page. A continued colour scheme
creates a sleek look and reflects the
high end status that the magazine has.
The use of black and white makes
covers appear less cluttered and busy
and makes the information stand out
more.
There are images that feature on the cover page spread,
with one image on each page. There is a limited amount
of pictures to prevent a cluttered look. The style of
pictures are the same as the on the cover as they are all
taken from the same shoot. Miley Cyrus, the key image
on the cover, has a direct mode of address looking
straight at the camera which engages the reader and
creates a connection between the two.
The article is arranged
into columns and
contain a variety of
different paragraph or
varying of lengths. The
article is an interview
with Miley Cyrus, this is
the main focus of this
issue. The interview
takes up a number of
pages and usually
features in the middle of
a magazine. The layout
is simple but
sophisticated, which
seems to be a recurring
issue throughout this
issue and previous
issues.
This is a section of text that has been taken from the article but is made
bigger and bolder to give an overview of points made in the article. This
particular one is the writer commenting on their view of Miley Cyrus, they
refer to her as being ‘the ear of the youth’ this reaches out to the target
audience as they are all young adults. The writer comments on how Miley
has chosen to ‘do something positive’ this is reaching out to people that
may not possibly be a fan of hers so that they will read what she has done
which may possibly change their perception of her. The article may engage
readers and see it as encouragement for them to do something positive.
While sticking with a white
background the splashes of paint
add colour to the monotone
colour scheme. The white
background with a black font is
classic and makes it easier to
read than if it was on a coloured
background. The black and
white makes it look a lot more
high end and classic with the
basic lay out. Some magazines
try a variety of different styles
for their double page spreads
but I think that this one portrays
the magazines image better.
This snippet of text from the interview is from a snippet of an
answer that Miley Cyrus has given as part of her interview. The
quote taken has a mode of address that reaches out to the
reader and talks directly to them encouraging them to be ‘funny,
cool and confident’ this will have been chosen to stand out so
that the message still gets across to readers even if they don’t
read the entire article. Writers will have chosen this based on
the target audience as they are mostly quite young and some
are still in a stage of being self conscious about who they are.
Target Audience
My target audience are a group that are referred to as ‘Trendies’. They
have a love for fashion and enjoy finding out and following new trends.
‘Trendies’ have an interest in fashion and music, however my magazine has
a focus on fashion. My target audience covers a large number of people as
‘Trendies’ are one of the biggest UK tribes. They have active social media
accounts, Instagram being one of their favourites. The group are inspiring to
younger teens that may develop into them as they become older. Younger
teens may admire their fashion sense or the pictures that they post on
social media. My target audience is between the ages of 18 – 25. My
magazine will have links to social media accounts so that readers would be
able to keep up to date with the latest trends. I could also include a page in
the magazine that could recommend Instagram pages for readers to follow.
Questionnaire responses
I asked this question because I wanted to see the
celebrities that readers would enjoy reading
about. The answers that I received will help me
choose who I will use for my key image when I
come to design the cover of my magazine. My
answers show that most of the respondents prefer
to read about Actors and Actresses, with 10 out of
25 people choosing this option. From these
answers I now know that I should choose an Actor
or Actress to be on the cover of my magazine.
I decided to ask this question because I thought
that it would help when I am designing the
double page spread of my magazine. The
majority of people liked images and photo
shoots in magazines, and a number of people
also enjoy reading interviews. From these
results I can gain some ideas about what to do
for the double page spread, I might do an
interview or do an article that is mostly made
up of images that may possibly be showing
current or upcoming trends.
I chose to ask this question because I think that the
colour scheme of a magazine is an important factor
to making a reader buy a magazine as the colour is
what catches their eye in the first place. The answers
show that most people prefer a monochrome colour
scheme, the second most popular answer was bright
colours. I think that from this research my colour
scheme will be black and white with bright pops of
colour used for the text on the cover and titles in the
magazine.
This question helps me to see how often people
prefer magazines, this will benefit my magazine
design as all fashion magazines have either an
issue number or the month. The answers have
shown that the majority of people would buy a
magazine every season. I was quite surprised by
the results because nearly every fashion magazine
releases an issue every month. From this I have
decided that my magazine will be a seasonal issue
with the name of the upcoming season on the
cover.
I asked this question as I thought that it would be
helpful when I am planning my cover page.
Although I have already asked a question similar
to this, this question is more specific and asks
the respondent who their style icon is. There
were a range of different answers, that
suggested actresses, models and music artists.
The responses that I have received will help me
choose my key image for the cover of my
magazine.
I wanted to ask this question because I thought that
it could help as a possible form of inspiration for my
double page spread. I could do my double page
spread based on different fashions and this helps
me to see the type of style that my audience have.
However, from my responses there have been a
variety of styles, ranging from floral and bright to
dark colours and simple patterns. This has made me
consider the option of showing the two different
styles on the double page spread so that there is
something for everybody
