Cosmopolitan
MagazineCosmopolitan is a relationship, sex, health,
careers, self-improvement, celebrities, fashion
and beauty magazine. Most magazines
encourage feminism and this is one of them
magazines. I have chosen this magazine to do
as an existing product as this is the kind of
magazine which I would like to produce. The
layout of this magazine is rather similar to my ideal magazine which I will produce
except my magazine wont be aimed at a specific gender unlike this one. The image
location are very similar in many of the cosmopolitan magazines. As Cosmo is a
empowering woman magazine the pose of the front cover girl always look very
powerful. This is especially shown in the Zendaya cover as the clothes which she is
wearing a suit and the red can connote danger and power. The angle of the images
show that even know they are celebrities they can relate to the reader, this would
create a personal connection between the reader which would make them buy the
magazine and relate to the celebrity throughout the article which has been written
about them .The two covers above look very similar which could show that if the reader
saw the cover they would automatically know that it is the Cosmopolitan magazine.
The fonts are very bold which would stand out more for the reader making them want
to
3. Direct Address- This is when the main image
on the cover makes direct eye contact with
the reader, this increases the intensity
between the reader and the celebrity. This
allows the reader to be drawn in and intrigued
to what this
celebrity would have to say in this magazine.
This can also give the effect of the magazine
and the reader to have more of a personal
connection. This gives the reader a slight
idea that most of the articles are aimed at the
reader.
Anchorage text is the biggest text after the
masthead, it catches peoples attention. Most of
the time the anchorage text links to the main
image but in this cover it doesn't.
Cosmopolitan has
recently become famous for
their sex tips, this is why âYou
deserve better sexâ is the
anchorage as this is what the
audience wants to see. The
anchorage text also makes the
article more personal to the
reader, because of the font,
colour and boldness it gives a
personal connection between
the reader and the article.
Cover line- The cover lines are
used to inform the audience what is
featured in this issue. Cosmopolitan
magazine focuses on relationship,
sex, health, careers, self-
improvement, celebrities, fashion
and beauty. These topics will come
up on the front cover as the
mastheads as this is what the
reader wants to read. This suggests
the target audience for
cosmopolitan is focused on teenage
girls onwards. This is because this
age group will be interested in the
celebrity topics and how to get
perfect hair and make up. There is
only one serious cover line on the
front cover yet that is played off as
a funny entertaining scenario.
Masthead- The masthead
is the red title displayed
across the top of the page.
Most of the mastheads
which are shown on the
magazine are the same
style so people can
recognize them from far
away even if the colour has
been changed. It also is the
boldest font on the page
which
makes it stand out more, it
contrasts with the
background as they are
both similar colours yet the
masthead still stands out.
Image- The main image is a medium
long shot. This allows the celebrity to
fill out the whole of the page. As the
image is the focus the reader would
automatically think there is a big article
wrote about her.
Colour theme- This is stereotypically
girly, It includes bright colours to
attract the teenage readers.

Images- Most of the
images which are
being displayed are
females showing
their power and
trying to empower
other women. This is
the main reason why
the profile for
cosmopolitan is
based on females as
there are features
which would interest
females more than
males. Also,
cosmopolitan is
known for
empowering women
hence the article

This is a good website to analyse as the audience is similar
to mine meaning that the format/
colours/articles interest them. If I take inspiration from this it
might increase the interest in my magazine.

Vanity Fair Magazine
Vanity Fair is a well known magazine.
However, it is more well known in America
than in England. It is a pop culture fashion
and current affairs based magazine. This
magazine includes five international editions
of the magazine, which means the celebrity
which is being shown on the main image
needs to be well recognised around the
country. Both of these covers feature a plain
background which makes the main image stand out more. The Scarlett Johansson
feature matches the masthead. This makes the main image stand out more against the
plain background. Both of these covers have a lot of serious cover lines. The Scarlett
Johansson cover has a cover line about Margaret Thatcher and the Angelina Jolie cover
has a cover line on how to save a 100,000 ton drowning ship. Both of these would
appeal to a older audience as they wont appeal to a typical teenage girl who is
interested in make up, fashion and beauty. The audience would be attracted to the
colours and the celebrity as if there was a fan who liked the specific celebrity they would
buy the magazine straight away. Normally magazines choose celebrities who have a
large fan base so the issue will make more money. I have chosen to analyse this cover
because the tone of the magazine and the content which they include is similar to my
product. I would also like to take inspiration from the front covers for when I create my
6. Direct Address- The celebrity (Angelina Jolie) is directly
looking at the audience making a personal connection
between the celebrity and the reader. This could give the
reader the feeling that the article which is written about the
celebrity and any advice given during that article the reader
had to follow
it. The direct address also gives a intensity
to buy the magazine.Cover line- This cover isn't filled with
cover lines which is very typical of
Vanity Fair as it is a very classy
lifestyle magazine. Most of the cover
lines which are featured on this cover
are aimed at an older female
generation aged 25-48. There is
nothing which relates to anyone
younger than this age. Most of the
cover lines are rather serious like
âHow to save a 100,000 ton drowning
shipâ and âVan Gogh suicide or
murder?â. These are very serious
which would attract the audience.
Image- This image is of a very famous actor, filmmaker and
humanitarian. The obvious reason why she is the main
image is more than likely that there is a article wrote about
her- celebrity endorsement attracts Target audience.
Colour theme- This colour scheme is
very neutral compared to some of the
covers which are in this pro forma. The
natural background contrasts between
the red and black font colour and
makes it stand out. The masthead
stands out more than others so people
will be more attracted to reading
Jolieâs article.
Anchorage text is the largest text after the
masthead, it catches peoples attention. Most of
the time the anchorage text links to the main
image and in this cover it does. Vanity Fair is
creating the link between Jolie
and the anchorage text to
attract more
peoples attention so when they
see this they will want to know
what her upcoming project is. At the
time this cover was
published it was when Brad and
Angelina split. A lot of the
audience would want to know
what is going on with her and
how she is coping with the
separation. âAngelina Jolieâ is
written in the same colour as the
masthead to make it stand out,
âawesomeâ is also the largest font. The top
of the page shows a banner
in italics which links to â
awesomeâ showing that the two
pieces of text are linked.Masthead- The masthead in
this cover is the largest text.
The text is the same as all
vanity fairs magazines. However, the colour has
changed to juxtapose the neutral shades on the
background. The font is always the same to let the
reader recognise immediately.

famous, A-listers
celebrities. This is

Time Out Magazine
This magazine is very different from the
others which I have chose to analyse. This
free publication is distributed at central
London Stations. In the magazine it gives
information on the tickets in London, any
offers, Things to do when in the big city,
Restaurants, Events and Festivals, as well
as for kids to do and many other things.
This is the most similar existing product which I have analysed as it is what I would like
to create when producing my magazine. I would like to take inspiration from Scarlett
Johansson cover. I like the theme of the photo as it makes the cover stand out
because its choice of effect. When looked at this product I learnt that a simplistic front
cover is very eye catching. This is because there is not loads of text which distract you
from the larger image. The background is very plain which makes the main image
stand out more. I have chosen this magazine as it is local and is basically a travel
guide but a lifestyle magazine at the same time. This magazine isn't the most popular
magazine in London, people donât buy this but most people in London grab one of
these as it lets them know what is going on in their city.
9. Direct Address- The celebrity (Scarlett Johansson) is directly
looking at the audience making the reader feel there is a
connection there. Almost as if the celebrity is telling the reader
to buy this issue. The intensity with the face which Johansson
portrays backs up this statement.
Cover line- Unlike the other
magazine covers which I have
analysed this cover is very
simplistic and only has one cover
line which is featured. This could
show that the main article is about
the celebrity or the main image is
used to attract the audience to
make them buy the magazines to
see what other articles are featured
in this magazine. The white font of
the cover line stands out from the
red, even though it is a smaller size
it would still attract the audience
attention.Colour theme- The colour theme
of this cover is very unusual, the
effect which the magazine has
used brings your attention straight
to the main image which would be
purposeful to show that there is a
celebrity involved in this magazine.
Image- This image is of a American actress and singer. She is
well known for her films which she has starred in, This actress
has starred in at least 51 films which makes her very well known
and powerful. Her pose in this image shows this, she's almost as
if she looking down on the reader. She is well known meaning
that if someone sees this cover they know straight away who it
Masthead- The masthead in
this magazine is the âTime Out
Londonâ. This masthead is the same in every
magazine which this company produce. This is
so the reader recognises the masthead. The
black and white also stand out against the grey
plain background.
Anchorage text is the largest text after the
masthead, it attracts the audience attention
and it can make them feel as though they have
a personal connection with the reader.
Sometimes the anchorage
text matches the text of
the main image. Which in
this cover is true,
the effect of the image is
being demonstrated in the
âScarlett Feverâ cover line. This
lets the audience know that this
cover line is connected with the
main image. This cover breaks
the typical convention of how the
anchorage text is the second
largest text on this cover. I think the
magazine company has made
it this way as they might not
want to attract the audience with the
magazine name but instead
they made the cover line more
visible to attract the audience
more.

Time Out Website
The Masthead- This
masthead is the same in
every print/online
magazine which this
company create. Its text
and colour for the majority
of the time are the same
apart from the odd colour
change to make the
masthead stand out even
more. The masthead will
always have the city which
they are featuring next to
the masthead. This is a
London magazine and
features everything which
goes on in London hence
why there is London in
while text white a red
underlining. Most of the
colour schemes in this free
magazine are red, black
and white. This is very
significant as anything
which this magazine
publishes it will stand out
against the colour theme.
The home page is also very important as straight away it
comes up with something which is relevant. â17 London
parks you cant miss â is very eye-catching. It is in bright
red so you cant miss it but also it is very seasonal as
April- September it generally is nice weather, and on
them warm days you'd want to go out in the sun to a park
or something similar. With that article it is very appealing
and people could see the parks and want to go there as
The images which are used are very
bright and natural, most are in nice
weather with people enjoying the
scenery. Generally when you look at
these images it is almost as if it can affect
your mood because it looks sunny there
and you might get excited at that thought.
The different titles at the top can
also be very appealing to the
audience which are viewing this
website. Seeing lots of menus
can be daunting for someone
who doesn't like to read.
However, with
this magazine it
just shows how
much activities
there are to do in
London.
Especially when
it comes to
summer. This
layout is good for
a website as it is
very bright for it
to catch
someone's
attention but it
isn't that bright to
give someone the
feeling of it
shouting at them
to open a article.

People Magazine
People magazine is a gossip filled with lifestyle
magazine. It consists of celebrities, TV, movies,
crime and even politics. This magazine isn't that
popular online but the older generation would
buy this to complete the puzzles which are
involved within the magazine- for these puzzles
they attract a lot of attention as you can win
prizes for answering the puzzles. As you can tell
from the Khloe Kardashian front cover it is very busy and filled with lots of information
(Some rumours and some real facts). The front cover consists of a plain background
with bright writing and stars and blobs. The cover line also attracts the audience as
when they are looking at buying a magazine they are looking for the magazine with
the juiciest cover line. The audience would also be attracted the bright colours and
what reputation the magazine has. If the magazine is known for being popular the
amount of people who buy it will go up because their will be a buzz around the
magazine. I have looked at this magazine because it is a different type of lifestyle
magazine compared to the other magazines. This appealed to me as if I decided not
to do the type of articles which I had planned I could do a gossip lifestyle magazine
as I would have analysed one.
12. Direct Address- This magazine is filled with images but they
all are giving direct address to the reader, this might be to
create a intense connection almost as if you could relate with
the person featured. For example, the main image is
Khloe Kardashian. She is looking directly
at the audience giving a connection
between her and the reader. Sometimes
the direct address could be used to let
the reader feel sympathy for the celebrity
featured.
Cover line- This front cover
features many cover lines and stars
and blobs. This is typical of this kind
of magazine as it makes the
audience more attracted to the
articles which are included in the
magazine. The cover lines feature
celebrities who the reader might be
interested in, by having this on the
front cover it would mean their
focus would be on this cover line.
Colour theme- The colour theme
of this cover is very bright and eye
catching. This is typical for this kind
of magazine as it is meant to be
eye catching and busy.
Image- There are many images in this cover, the magazine is
like this to attract the audiences attention. Especially if the see a
image of a celebrity this would attract them straight away and
would entice them to buy this magazine to read the article about
them .
Masthead- The masthead is
always this font so the reader can recognise it
straight away. The colour normally changes to
make the masthead stand out more against the
images which have been shown. This would
appeal to the audience as the more the eye-
catching it is the more it will attract the attention o
Anchorage text is the largest text after the
masthead. Normally the colour is linked to the
main image. However, with this issue this isnât
true. The Anchorage text is
next to the article which is
the main article of
the magazine. The
colours donât link but it is
very simple to see the
connection between the
anchorage text and the main
image. This feature stands out a lot as
the text is very large and in a
bright yellow colour which is
very eye catching. The
location of this could also bring more
attention to the main
image which is Khloe
Kardashian. The stand first is
also highlighted which brings
more attention to the article.
Overall, this text brings more
attention to the article and
appeals to the audience with
the bright colours.

might not always be
the same. This is like
many of these
magazines which I
have analysed, they
companies change the
font to make the brand
of magazine stand out
more so people will
recognise it. The
background normally is
the same for the
magazine and the
website. Its normally
just plain white to bring
your attention to the
articles which have
been wrote instead of
all your attention being
drawn to the
background instead of
the actual articles.
The images which are used are very bright and natural.
They are all high quality images but you can clearly see that
most of them haven't been taken by the actual magazine.
However, these images give a good tone for the magazine
and are in focus which is the most important thing when it
comes to a product with images in.
The home page of a
website is very
important, it is the first
thing pople see when
they visit the website.
This has to be eye
catching and be up to
date with the latest
headlines. This
magazine is clearly up
to date, only 3 hours
before I took these
screenshots a new
royal baby was born.
Straight away a article
was published and
moved to the top of the
website to bring more
attention. By having a
breaking news story on
the home page the
audiences feels as
though everything on
the website will be up
to date and relevant to
what is going on in the
world. If everything is
relevant it will make the
audience want to read
on and become
trapped
in this gossip cycle by
14. Research Analysis
⢠What common features do the researched products have? Most
of the magazines all have a common feature and that is a bold masthead, this is mainly because the
magazine company's want the readers to know who they are and their reputation. For example, if you say
the word vogue, immediately someone thinks of their reputation with the models which have been featured
and the masthead. This is what most magazines want as they want a buzz about their product. Another
common feature are the target audiences. The reasons why I chose these 4 magazine was because they all
have similar audiences. The majority of these magazines focus on women to entice them with the glamour
of the magazines. This was really interesting to see how each magazine did it in different ways.
⢠What aspects of the research will you include within your own
production work? I have learnt a lot when researching for my existing products. I learnt what I
could include to entice the audience, this would be anything from bright colours to having my cover lines
onto my front cover. The websites which I looked at all were relevant to what was going on in the world (this
was very clear in Vanity Fair). Another aspect which I will include when I start my production is having a high
quality photography and journalism. This would interact more with my audience as it would appeal and make
the magazine look more interesting than just a lifestyle magazine.
16. Audience research
⢠Observation: My observation was that
there were more males who took my
survey than females.
⢠What this says about my
audience: This says that my audience
are equal.
⢠How will your product appeal to
this audience: I am doing a gender
neutral lifestyle magazine. This means
that this question would just let me decide
what men would like in their magazine as
well as what a female wants in a lifestyle
magazine.
17. Audience research
⢠Observation: The majority of people who
filled out my survey were 16-24. 4.55% were
25-35 and 13.64% were aged 46+
⢠What this says about my audience:
My audience is filled with different age gaps.
This helps with my content which I would
feature, from doing this survey I can find out
what people older than 24+ want to see in a
lifestyle magazine.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: I would make sure that my work
would appeal to the younger generation by
putting relatable articles for this generation
(like the cocktail bars) where as for the older
generation I would use the cocktail bars to
appeal but I would also add an article about
the tourist things in York to appeal to the older
audience.
18. Audience research
⢠Observation: From these two screenshots they
show 8 answers of people who donât buy
magazines because they can access everything
online instead of having to spend money to buy
one. Where as 2 people from these two
screenshots because most of the time with print
magazines they include free gifts and are a topic
that they are generally interested in.
⢠What this says about my audience: This
says a lot about my audience, they use social
media instead of having to use their own money to
buy one. Most of them wouldn't see the point with
buying magazines from a shop where they cost
when they can just access them online for free.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: For my magazine I will have a
website which would be free to look at as well as
having a print magazine. The people who donât
buy magazines can read the articles online for free
and the people who want to read the magazine on
paper it would be made available.
19. Audience research
⢠Observation: This is the same question
as the slide above but with more answers. 3
people stated that they would buy a
magazine because sometimes there is a
exclusive article in the print which you cant
read online, this person also said about the
free item in the magazine. 7 people said that
they wouldn't buy a magazine as they are
expensive and everything is online now.
⢠What this says about my audience:
This says that the majority of my audience
would rather have everything online instead
of on paper.
⢠How will your product appeal to
this audience: For my magazine I will
have a website which would be free to look at
as well as having a print magazine. The
people who donât buy magazines can read
the articles online for free and the people who
want to read the magazine on paper it would
be made available.
20. Audience
research ⢠Observation: The most popular genre of
magazines were fashion and music. However,
some people suggested a interest in Film and
Game magazines as well as a TV magazine.
⢠What this says about my audience:
This suggests that my audience is very mixed
opinion but most people like a genre of
magazine.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: If I can I would make my product
include the different genres which were in favour
from this question. For example, with the fashion
genre I could add a page on my website about
fashion as fashion comes under lifestyle as well.
21. Audience research
⢠Observation: No one in my survey
buy magazines daily and weekly.
However, 19.05% of the surveyors buy
magazines monthly. Unfortunately, 12
people said they never buy magazines.
⢠What this says about my
audience: The increase in people
who never buy a magazine could have
something about the magazines are all
online now so they never have to spend
money.
⢠How will your product appeal to
this audience: I would still produce a
paper based product but I would also
make sure I develop my website so it is
more interesting for the people who
commented saying they never buy
magazines.
22. Audience research
⢠Observation: 18 people answered this question,
These had all different answers but the most
frequent answer which I saw a fashionable/pretty
magazine style which interests them more, This is
because some of my audience are interested in
fashion.
⢠What this says about my audience: This
can show that my audience look at the little details
which are shown and to interest them I have to have
something which catches their attention and is
stylish.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: If I can I would make my product
include the different styles which were in favour from
this question then I will.
23. Audience research
⢠Observation: These screenshots show a few
other styles which people enjoy. This was very mixed
as people had commented saying they like
magazines with less text and more images where as
there was a answer saying they âlike a good busy
fashion magazine.â
⢠What this says about my audience: This
says that I cant just pick one style I will have to
create some which will appeal to the majority of the
audience.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: My product will appeal to the audience
as I would have a mixture between the style being
busy and simplistic at the same time if I have enough
time for that.
24. Audience research
⢠Observation: The majority of my audience like the
information aspect side of magazines.
⢠What this says about my audience: This
says that my audience look for the detail in the
magazines and relevant information is vital for them.
⢠How will your product appeal to this
audience: I will make sure that the information in
my articles are relevant to the magazine, I would also
keep the specific interest of the audience my main aim
in the magazine.
25. Audience
research
⢠Observation: Surprisingly 57.14% of my
audience read magazines on Paper where
as 38.10% read magazines on a smart
phone.
⢠What this says about my
audience: This contradicts my research
so far as before in my other questions the
answers have been leaning towards reading
magazines of social media rather than
paper.
⢠How will your product appeal to
this audience: I would make my website
acceptable to look at on any smart
phone/any electronic device. I would also
use a paper magazine to attract the
audience.
26. Audience
research ⢠Observation: Most people think
magazines should cost ÂŁ1-ÂŁ2 rather
than how expensive they are at the
moment. Where as ÂŁ3-ÂŁ4 was less
popular and even one person said
ÂŁ5+
⢠What this says about my
audience: This says that my
audience likes the cheaper
magazines, this may be the reason
why people donât buy magazines
because they are too expensive.
⢠How will your product appeal
to this audience: When I would
advertise my magazine I would go
with the magazine being priced at ÂŁ1-
ÂŁ2 as it would appeal to the audience.
27. Audience
research ⢠Observation: The content in the
lifestyle which people would want the
most would be pictures. The next
would be information and 2 person
would be a advice article.
⢠What this says about my
audience: This says that my
audience are more interested in the
pictures as it is what would interest
them more.
⢠How will your product appeal
to this audience: I will make sure
I add loads of pictures in my magazine
articles and information as this was
the most popular options.
28. Audience research YouGov â COSMOPOLITAN
PROFILE
This is the typical profile
for someone who is
interested in the
magazine Cosmopolitan.
When I did my existing
products, I researched
this. This would mean
that my target audience
and demographic would
be very similar to this
audience profile. This
would make a lot of
sense as with my survey
audience they were
around this age range.
29. Audience research YouGov â PEOPLE MAGAZINE
This is the profile for the
magazine of People which I
have researched. This is similar
to the cosmopolitan magazine
which I had researched. The
age gap is the same and the
gender is the same. People
magazine is a very gossip
central lifestyle magazine which
would entice the retail job
market as stereotypically they
are known as being very
gossipy. I would presume by
target audience would be similar
to this audience but my
magazine is not gossipy so I
wouldn't want to attract this
target audience because it
wouldn't be a magazine which
they would be interested in.
30. Audience research YouGov â TIME OUT MAGAZINE
This is the audience profile for
London's Time Out magazine.
This was a unexpected
audience, especially for the type
of magazine it is. The target
audience is aged 40-54.
Compared to my target
audience they are completely
different. My target audience is
aimed at 16-24 year olds and
has the same content as this
magazine has. However, the
social grade are the same for
my product as this audience.
Time out is a very informative
magazine which has some
younger content but most likely
the way it is contributed young
adults wont be bothered to read
it as is not something which you
would pay for or something
31. Audience research YouGov â VANITY FAIR MAGAZINE
Vanity Fair is known by many
teenagers. This is the profile for
the magazine, it attracts females
which are 18-24 and have a
social grade of ABCâS. This is
the like most of the magazines
which I have researched. This is
similar to my target audience,
mainly because the content
which I would include in my
magazine would entice this
demographic then a older and
more sophisticated audience.
When I do produce my
magazine I wont specify what
gender my magazine is aimed at
as it is for anyone to read and
relate with.
33. Interview 1
Do you think print media is a dying industry? And why?
Yes, because the rise of social media and the internet, people are reading magazines and
newspapers less and less, as well as the rise of digital posters, which means that even physical
posters are becoming less common. I do think print media is a dying industry because of this.
What initially interests you in a magazine? And why?
The cover, because it should tell me all I need to know about a magazine before I read it.
What kind of magazines do you read? How could they be improved?
I read mostly media based magazines like Empire and PC gamer, because I am interesting in
things like show reviews and behind the scenes footage. I think the magazines could be improved
with less pointless advertising on the inside. Like how some magazines have coupons for window
cleaner. This seems unnecessary to me.
How do you usually hear about different magazines?
I usually see magazines in the shop when I am busy buying other things and they attract my
attention if they are well done on the covers.
What would you want to see in a lifestyle magazine?
Attractive men and women in stylish clothing.
34. Interview 1
⢠Observation: This interview was conducted by a 17 year old. It was interesting to see the
viewpoint of this individual as they were younger than the person who I interviewed in interview 2 yet
they both had similar answers. This interviewee expressed that he thought print media was a dying
industry and people are now using social media to read articles. Also this person said that they look
more at the cover of a magazine then anything else because this should be the first impression of the
magazine.
⢠What this says about my audience: This says about my audience that they take note of
what should catch their attention and what attracts you. They take note of what the articles are based
on as my interviewee answered the last question with a stylish cover. Knowing how this reader finds
out about magazines is very useful as if I have more time at the end of my project I could do a advert
on how the audience finds out.
⢠How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this
audience as I will make sure I have a eye catching cover with bright colours and a image which
represents what the magazine is about and other articles involved in the issue.
35. Interview 2
Do you think print media is a dying industry? And why?
Print media is struggling but there seems to be some sort of resurgence in places. It think it
depends on the market. Lifestyle and food magazines seem to be working well. Higher end sports
(Rouler for example) and fashion seem to be holding up. Newspapers are struggling. That said, it
requires the same elements of photographers, journalists, editors and advertisers to produce a
website or a digital edition as it does the print version. The medium is changing. People still do
like to hold something real as opposed to a digital version.
What initially interests you in a magazine? And why?
Photography and the subject of the magazine first. Then the design work. The content is important
to keep people coming back but to get them to buy in the first place, great photographs are a good
way to go.
How could some magazines that you read be improved?
I prefer a bit more detail in my writing. Often, magazines commission very short articles. Sometimes the
content advertised with cover lines on the front is a bit of a let down when you get to it. Iâd take fewer,
more detailed articles over lots of small ones. The small ones feel more like social media but when I sit
down with a magazine, I have the time to read in detail.
How do you usually hear about different magazines?
Social media might flag up a new release but mostly I see by going to a supermarket or newsagent and
seeing what is new.
What would you want to see in a lifestyle magazine?
Places to visit, inspiring and aspirational images and well chosen typography. The magazine should
reflect the content so if it is a higher end lifestyle magazine, the content should also be high end.
36. Interview 2
⢠Observation: This interviewee was very particular in what they wanted to see in a magazine and what
initially interest them when looking for a magazine. My interviewee 1 and the interviewee 2 both think that print
based media is a dying industry, and mainly for the same reason too. This person said that they photography
and the subject of the magazine interest them more than the design work. This is a recurring theme, the
audience wants to see detail in the front covers and the photography which would interest them more than just
a unfocused photograph.
⢠What this says about my audience: This gives the view that my target audience
would rather see the detail in the writing than loads of content in the actual magazine. The audience is more
focused on having good photographs and detailed content than a rushed article with no link to the actual genre
of the magazine.
⢠How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this
audience as it will include places to visit and it will also include high end photography. I will make sure of this
as when I am in my production period I will go out more than once to get photographs. I will take pictures of
the places to visit on different days so if my first set of photographs look unfocused or have people stood right
in the view of the place I can easily just go back to the location and take the photos again.

Overall I got 22 responses for my survey. This is a very good number as it means that I have more of a view on what my audience wants and likes.
