The health benefits of washing hands, wearing a seatbelt while in a car - none of these ideas and practices were accepted immediately. In addition to needing time to incubate, new ideas also need to be accessible so that they can be tested, debated, and built upon. This presentation, which is based on my previous research and personal experiences, will highlight the importance and connection between open access publishing and the role of social media in promotion and dissemination of scholarly research.

Scientific researchers faced with extremely large computations or the requirement of storing vast quantities of data have come to rely on distributed computational models like cloud computing. However, distributed computation is typically complex and expensive. The Social Cloud for Public eResearch aims to provide researchers with a platform to exploit social networks to reach out to users who would otherwise be unlikely to donate computational time for scientific and other research oriented projects. In this paper we explore the motivations of users to contribute computational time and examine the various ways these motivations can be catered to through established social networks. We specifically look at integrating Facebook and BOINC, and discuss the architecture of the functional system and the novel social engineering algorithms that power it.

The goal of this presentation is to allow researchers to understand the possibilities of Social Media as a research field on the fields related to NLP/IR/DM.
Our team of MBA consultants, "Dragon Consulting Partners", developed this key learnings report after completing fieldwork, interviews and desktop research on trends in digital media in China.
Together with our MBA cohort, we flew to China for a study tour where we experienced first hand the cultural differences in China.
This report condenses the key learnings and take aways that we had from the experience. Drawing upon a number of case studies, we analyse managerial implications for businesses looking to succeed with digital media in China

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Data will be Big, but our users will continue to use
Facebook and Twitter
But research data will grow in importance as will use of
mobiles.
According to the evidence the future isn‟t quite what I
expected. But it has helped to identify our business
strategies.
