There are three main points:
1) As technology advances, people are spending more time on near-vision tasks like reading screens which can cause eye strain and other symptoms of asthenopia.
2) A study of 3,800 patients found the most common symptoms were eye strain (58% of patients) and tired eyes (69% of patients), and these symptoms negatively impacted quality of life.
3) People who use computers extensively for work are at high risk for developing asthenopia, as are those in other professions involving intensive reading. Increased use of screens for both work and leisure has contributed to rising rates of asthenopia.
