The Concept Of Cultural Erasure, Inequality And Violence
Postcolonialism: The Concept of Cultural Erasure, Inequality and Violence Colonization can be
dated back to 1492 with the Spanish venture led by Columbus. Colonialism is defined as The
policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with
settlers, and exploiting it economically (Oxford Dictionary). This expedition spread European
influence worldwide, in places such as China, Lebanon, India, and Antigua. European influence is
still prevalent today through the crossing of racial lines and shifting of cultures towards a more
civilized way of living. Colonialismis still prevalent today, in the form of postcolonialism.
Postcolonialism can be defined as America s benefaction to nations worldwide that include dynamic
influences in things such as: government, culture, education and economy. One of the concepts
erected from colonialism is globalization. Since globalization is a direct effect of colonialism, it is
no surprise that globalization influences the same categories as postcolonialism (government,
culture, education and economy), making the two concepts almost synonymous with minimal
differences. Globalization is defined as the integration of economics and communications of nations
through increased contact by technology. Globalization dominates the economic and social side of
the field while postcolonialism dwells in the cultural and educational aspects. This European gift
has contributed to global conflicts,

Impact Of Education On The American Education System
Education has overtime developed from an institution that lacked what was necessary to properly
education men, women and children, to what is now a fairly decent system that prepares people
from all across the world. For minorities, or underrepresented ethnic groups in America this is a
different case. My focused are of research pertains to the history of educationand how policies and
the quality of it has transformed.
While we have grown over the decades to provide education for all groups of people there is still
equality lacking in our education system. For my research I will be examining how education has
changed between the generations in America and how the system is now compared to the late
1800s and 1900s. My research question is how has the quality and available opportunities for
underrepresented minority groups changed in the American education system.
Janelle Scott and Rand Quinn examine the racial politics of education in the six decades Post
Brown Era in their article, The Politics of Education in the Post Brown Era: Race, Markets, and the
Struggle for Equitable Schooling . The authors analyze market reform trends and how they are
being justified by those within the school system. San Francisco and Philadelphia are the two cities
being focused on and how market trends are affecting the schools and its children. Racial,
Linguistic and socioeconomic segregation in public education are being observed within these
cities. As the authors did their research they

Fate Vs. Freewill In Oedipus The King
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines fate as: an inevitable and often adverse outcome,
condition, or end . Fate vs freewill is a common theme throughout the thematic play, Oedipus the
King. Starting out, he protagonist, Oedipus, learns of his ill fate; he will marry his mother and
kill his father. There is quite a bit of controversy over whether the downfall of his life was caused
by his destiny, or by his actions. Ultimately, though, fate played a greater part in the great tragedyof
Oedipuslife. There were no choices he could have made that would change the outcome. He was
doomed to live out this woeful tale. Early in the play, Oedipus father, Laius, tried to change the
inevitable. By killing his son, Laius believed he would not have to be killed by him. In the end,
baby Oedipus lived and his fate played out. Oedipus says, Curse the man who took the cruel bonds
from off my legs, as I lay in the field. He stole me from death and saved me, no kindly service. Had
I died then I would not be so burdensome to friends. (Sophocles21). Laius tried to take matter into
his own hands, he tried to use his free will to shape the outcome of his story, but nonetheless, fate
prevailed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fear of the prophecy drove him from his home in Corinth and brought him ultimately to Thebes.
(Play Summary Oedipus the King). He thought that by leaving his parents, he would change the
prophecy. He would not have the opportunity to marry his mother or kill his father because he
would not be near them. In the end, every preventative measure he took was for naught. His fate
was inevitable. No matter what choices he made, they would all lead to the same outcome. Fate,

Differences Between Television And Television
After going over how meaning is made in television, in chapter seven, Mittell goes over how these
meanings on television can impact the way that we, as viewers, think about our lives and the world.
Mittell goes over the two most popular approaches that are usually used to understand the
relationship of the meanings conveyed through televisionand the real world, as a way to escape the
world and as a reflection of the world. The escapist and direct reflection approaches, according to
Mittell, are not accurate. The escapist approach, which states that people watch television to escape
from real life, falls short when considering the news, sports, talk shows, and other reality television
programs due to their connection to real life. The direct reflection approach, which states that
programming on television is true to viewers lives, fails to take into account fantasy programs and
the representation distortion that happens in non fiction programs. Mittell argues that the best way
to understand the relationship between television meanings and the way television viewers see the
world is to use the refraction approach. The refraction approach states that television meanings
refract the world, where programs alter the world around it and its meanings through particular
techniques and forms like cinematography and editing. An important term in Mittell s refraction
approach is representation. Mittell defines representation as, taking facets of the real world and
presenting them

The Interlopers
The Interlopers : The short story The Interlopers by Saki demonstrates the ironic aura of man vs.
nature, and man vs. man. Hector Hugh Munro, pen named Saki, was one of the most popular
short story writers during the pre World War I British literature era. He wrote many stories and
is often referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were
apparent in the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Other
stories by Saki include: Gabriel Ernest , The Toys of Peace , and The Storyteller . These short
stories specifically illustrate horror, and the advantage of living life outside of the box. The three
predominant literary techniques in Saki s The Interlopers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The conflict instantly changes and nature becomes involved. While trapped under the tree they
realize how idiotic the quarrel has been and vow to become cordial; treating one another as
neighbors, instead of as enemies. The men s forgiveness towards each other displays an internal
conflict because both had to weigh the pros and cons of ending the feud. Either they make peace
and work together to get freed, or they could just stay angry at one another and risk never being
rescued from under the tree. Therefore, the three main conflicts displayed in The Interlopers are
Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. self. All of which provide a great deal of trouble for
both men all through out the novella. Irony also plays a big part in understanding the concept of
the story. Without Saki s ironic ways readers would not get a clear idea of what the moral is
after reading the novella. As To begin, Georg and Ulrich are fighting over land, which in the
outcome is the cause of their death. In the beginning they had the intentions of searching across
the useless spurs in hopes of gunning down a human rival. All along the only foe that they truly
had was within the nature that was surrounding them. Saki ended the story with one word;
wolves. It is not directly stated if Georg and Ulrich were eaten by the beasts, but that one word
creates a mysterious vibe that makes the reader wonder if either of their crew ever made it in time
to help them in time to fight

The Causes Of Wealth Inequality In America
Grace Ogunkunle
Prof. D. Fozouni

Research Paper
Dec 8, 2017.
Wealth Gap In America
Americans today live in a distinctly unequal society. Inequality is now wider than it used to be in
the last century, and the division in income, wages, and wealth are broader than they are in other
developed economies of the world. Wealth inequality is the imbalance of wealth or income within
a society, and it is one of the most vital economic challenge the US is facing today because the
distribution of wealth is more dispersed, making the inequality in wealth distribution at its highest.
While the matter has been discussed for many years, the actual income disparity in the U.S. has
heightened and is now verging on an extreme gap that portends to impede long term economic
growth. The huge gap between the wealthy and poor is squeezing the U.S. economy, the wealth
gap threatens economic growth by diminishing social mobility and producing a less educated
workforce who are not able to compete in the global economy. unrestrained level of income
inequality causes political pressures, it discourages trade, investment, and hiring. The present level
of income inequality in the U.S. is shrinking GDP growth, and the world s largest economy is
struggling to recover from the Great Recession. Wealth inequality has become a hot topic in recent
years, this is because the return rate on capital, such as stocks or real estate, outruns that of
economic growth which resulted in the wealthiest grasping a growing share of wealth, leading to
increasing inequality. The unequal distribution of wealth has been a major hallmark of the U.S
economy, and among its most notable and lasting results, but until it was brought to the awareness
of the public by the Occupy movement s catch phrase referring to the 1% of the populace who
control half of the nation s wealth, this issue had not been brought to the limelight of public
economic and political discourse since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and almost every
American is basically unaware of the true magnitude and character of the unequal distribution of
wealth in our country. Inequality in wealth i.e. the sum of household savings, home equity,
investments, and debts is

have witnessed some meetings at Portobello PR as well as witnessing one at Denison street

having a meeting and the different types of meetings. Most meetings require a few preparation steps
before the meetingwill happened this is usually organized by the manager or the owner. Tasks you
need to do first is letting the meeting attendees know the Time, Location, attendees Requirements

Conforming To Society s Expectations In Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot Film Assessment
Billy Elliot shows us that it is important to remain true to yourself and to not conform to society s
expectation.
Settings How do they reinforce the main messages of the film?
Steven Daldry picks the settings in his movie carefully, in order to emphasize and reinforce the
importance of remaining true to yourself, and to remind us as an audience that it isn t always
about conforming to what society wants. Steven Daldry does this through the repeated metaphor
of a cage in his settings. The boxing hall represents tradition and society s expectations of Billy,
You re a disgrace to them gloves and to the traditions of this boxing hall. Steven Daldry contrasts
the worlds that Jackie and Billy belong to, by placing them on the different sides of the wire doors
of the boxing hall, emphasizing the differences of their worlds through the ... Show more content on

This is done further in the movie in Everington. The miner s huts in Everington represent
conformity and the grey dull colours of the miner show the bleak and uncertain future of Billy
in this town. There is sense of confinement in the town streets and the lack of any other streets
aside the main street symbolise that all the children in Everington are expected to travel on the
path to become Miners. The walls are closing in on Billy and they represent the obstacle he will
have to overcome. Steven Daldry also provides stark contrasts in order to convey the message of
the film, his use of Juxter positioning allows the audience to recognise the extent of Billy s
passion of ballet and how unusual it was for a boy to do ballet in Billy s community. The use of
Juxter positioning allows the audience to see the full extent of the impact that the character s
environment had

A. Key concept or finding: The concept is the safe haven function. This is when an individual
will seek out their caregiver when they are faced with stress or danger. 1. Example from novel

to the danger of her significant other George towards her daughter. Along with this would be
when Charlotte reached out to her Mama when she was under stress of not knowing what to do

Why Should Performance Enhancing Drugs Be Banned
In this source I was looking for reasons to support why some sports have banned performance
enhancing drugs. I decided to take a look at this source because the title Steroid Fatigue
Syndrome was intriguing and looked helpful. Also, the article was created by Sports Illustrated
(a credible magazine) which I knew may help me. This source was important to me because
author Phil Taylor explains clearly reasons why performance enhancing drugs should be banned
and what would happen if these drugs were allowed in sports. In the article Taylor states For years

High jumpers would have longer hang times than a 60 yard punt. Weightlifters would clean and
jerk midsized sedans. This quote supports why performance enhancing drugs shouldn t be
banned because it shows that it would be much more exciting to watch if athletes were allowed
to use performance enhancing drugs. Runners would finish in world record time and weight
lifters could lift large cars and pull giant trucks. This would make the sports much more
entertaining. This would be great for the sport because it would invite new views and attract a
large crowd. Next, in the article it states To me, the idea of allowing athletes to freely use
performance enhancing drugs borders on absurdity. I don t want to see competitions decided
according to which athlete is most willing to take chemical risks with his or her body. But my
resolve weakens with each convoluted case of suspected PED use. This quote proves that there is
no point in allowing athletes to use performance enhancing drugs. Also, it shows how fans don t
want to see athletes getting all drugged up for an event because that defeats the purpose and gives

Skeptecism of History and Science
A skeptic is defined in two different ways, a skeptic could be considered as a person who
question the validity and raise doubts to all accepted opinions or accepted conclusion; a skeptic
could also be a philosopher who denies the possibility of knowledge, or even rational belief, in
some sphere. When knowledge is primarily presented by an abundance of assumption is brought
up. Generally, a skeptic often is required to proceed a thorough evaluation of the assumption or
hypothesis presented in order to provide factual clarity. What may seem correct has the potential to
be completely faulty when another evidence clashes with the primary idea. The two areas of
knowledge that requires to an individual to thoroughly evaluate, question their claim, ask for clarity,
consistency in logic and adequacy of evidence is history and science. When analyzing a historical
event, ideally information is required to be traced back in both quantitative and qualitative
variables. History could be easily manipulated, misinterpret and biased. For a particular historical
event, many claims could be laid out with certain amount of evidence. For example, many
historians claim that the Holocaust did not happen and the conspiracy theory that America did not
plan on the moon. The reality that anyone is able to propose various theories that contradicts what
may seem as facts to others proves that there are multiple perspective that needs critical analysis.
Historians evaluates the evidence proposed, they

Pros And Cons Of Job Application Essay
Too many college graduates enter into post grad on a chaotic job hunt without any advice on
how to navigate through it. While in college you hear countless stories of people not finding
employment after graduation but never do you actually think it would be you. If you graduated
and immediately found your dream job then congratulations!! But this blog isn t for you. It s for
the reader who has been filling out so many job applications that they aren t even sure what they
want to do anymore. It s for the readers who disregard what they majored in just so they can enter
the workforce. And lastly, it is for the reader who lives in their own disappointment, who have
made sure they held internships, kept their grades up, and obtained the necessary skills but still
can t find employment. I am here to tell you that it is okay. Things will fall into place but you must
keep your head up and stay on the path that was ordained just for you.

When to buy and sell stocks is a question that has been asked by traders and investors since stock
markets were invented. There are literally thousands of ways to trade stocks and make a profit. The
problem is that most investors do not have the technical skills or knowledge to obtain historical
stock market data and then back test all of these strategies to find out which one will work best.
Another problem is that in certain conditions, some strategies will perform better than others. With
this in mind, keeping your trading strategy as simple as possible, and then following it with strict
discipline, is the way to go.
One of the best general models for trading stocks that will produce significant long term profits (if
applied to the correct stocks) is a trend following strategy. Trend following strategies essentially
buy a stock when it breaks out to a new high price of some level, and then exits the position at a
low price. This actually sounds like buy high and sell low but the goal is actually to buy high and
sell higher. This is counter to what most

Comparing Svidrigailov s Dream In Crime And Punishment
In the novel Crime and Punishment, there are various dreams that are prominent to the story and
add element to the characters. This includes the character, Arkady Svidrigailov, who experiences
several dreams. Dostoevsky uses Svidrigailov s dream as a representation of his subconscious
desires, both pure and impure; this includes his dreams in order to further characterization of
Svidrigailov that could not occur through plot events or dialogue.
The first of Svidrigailov s dreams begins with a mouse running all over his body. The dream was so
strange he thought it was real.
He was dozing off; the feverish shiver had ceased, when suddenly something seemed to run over his
arm and leg under the bedclothes...he shook the blanket and suddenly ... Show more content on

Svidrigailov knew that girl; there was no holy image; no burning candle beside the coffin; no sound
of prayers: the girl had drowned herself. She was only fourteen, but her heart was broken (502).
Svidrigailov has this dream because the girl he raped had killed herself because of his actions. Yet,
Svidrigailov surprises the reader: But her loose fair hair was wet; there was a wreath of roses on
her head. The stern and already rigid profile of her face looked as though chiselled of marble
too, and the smile on her pale lips was full of an immense unchildish misery and sorrowful appeal
(502). This could be a depiction of Svidrigailov s guilt of raping the young girl. From being
familiar with Svidrigailov s character, the reader would not expect him to feel guilty of his action.
The final significant dream concludes when he is walking through a corridor and finds a young girl.
He bent down with the candle and saw a little girl, not more than five years old, shivering and
crying, with her clothes as wet as a soaking house flannel...he took her in his arms, went back to
his room, sat her on the bed, and began undressing her...when he had undressed her, he put her on
the bed, covered her up and wrapped her in the blanket from her head downwards.

For this essay, I will be studying nettles by Vernon Scannell and Sister Maude by Christina
Rossetti. Vernon Scannell was British poet and author and was most famous as a war poet as he
fought in world 2 war two. The poem nettles is about his war experience in 1944. Christina
Rossetti is an English poet that wrote a poem about Sister Maude that is a tale of two sisters
feuding over a lover. These two poems show feeling and attitudes therefore I will be analysing
how it is shown in the poems The poem reveals Vernon Scannell own experience of war zone life
and his hatred of war. He uses the elements of nature to express his negative view of war, and this
is immediately expressed in the first line of the first stanza. The poem is making reference... Show

Western Europe During The 16th Century
During the 16th century western Europe experienced a rise in even stronger nation states with
intense religious beliefs and an increased desire to politically control populaces across the continent.
This was especially evident in the Low countries where people were separated between Catholics
and Protestants. Resentment between these two groups escalated with the Dutch Revolt and in
1579 the seven northern, mainly protestant, provinces declared their independence from King
Phillip the second of Spain and became the Dutch Republic. Conflict between Catholics and
Protestants did not only occur in the Low countries, France also fought numerous wars in their
country over religion mainly between the aristocratic House of Bourbon and House of Guise....

This left his ten year old son king with Catherine De Medici, his mother, as regent. Catherine was
a devout Catholic and wanted the Monarchy to stay under Catholic control. So she arranged the
wedding of Catholic, Marguerite de Valois, and Huguenot, Henry of Navarre. At the wedding they
brought numerous Huguenot nobles to Paris, so political and religious tensions elevated. Gaspard
De Coligny a Huguenot leader was shot by a hired assassin from the House of Guise. However, the
bullet merely tore off his finger and shattered his elbow. After the botched assassination, Catherine
De Medici and other Catholic nobles feared Huguenot retaliation. To eliminate future political
opposition she ordered her son to demand the execution of Huguenot leaders. These attacks would
become known as St. Batholomew s Day massacre. Catholics sided with the House of Guise and
protestants sided with the House of Bourbon. For weeks Catholic mobs attacked Huguenots in
urban centers and the the countryside ultimately leaving 5,000 30,000 dead. The massacre was a
turning point in the French Wars of Religion. The Huguenot political force was severely devastated
by the death of their aristocratic leaders. Yet these massacres ultimately settled nothing, it just

Convergent Evolution Of Human Evolution
A surprisingly recent instance of human evolution has been detected among the peoples of East
Africa. It is the ability to digest milk in adulthood, conferred by genetic changes that occurred as
recently as 3,000 years ago, a team of geneticists has found. The finding is a striking example of a
cultural practice the raising of dairy cattle feeding back into the human genome. It also seems to be
one of the first instances of convergent human evolutionto be documented at the genetic level.
Convergent evolution refers to two or more populations acquiring the same trait independently.
Throughout most of human history, the ability to digest lactose, the principal sugar of milk, has
been switched off after weaning because the lactase enzyme that breaks the sugar apart is no
longer needed. But when cattle were first domesticated 9,000 years ago and people later started to
consume their milk as well as their meat, natural selection would have favored anyone with a
mutation that kept the lactase gene switched on.
Such a mutation is known to have arisen among an early cattle raising people, the Funnel Beaker
culture, which flourished 5,000 to 6,000 years ago in north central Europe. People with a
persistently active lactase gene have no problem digesting milk and are said to be lactose tolerant.
Almost all Dutch people and 99 percent of Swedes are lactose tolerant, but the mutation becomes
progressively less common in Europeans who live at increasing distances from the ancient

Wireshark Essay
First, let s talk about Wireshark, it is the most common network packet analyzer used worldwide,
perhaps one of the best open source (free) packet analyzers today. It lets you capture and
interactively browse the traffic running on a computer network, helping you analyze and manage
the traffic in your network. Like a measuring device used to examine what is going on in your
network cable, like a voltmeter used by an electrician to examine what is going on inside an
electric cable. Therefore, gives you the tools to do in depth network analysis, it will try to capture

The software does not provide intrusion detection system capabilities for your network. As a result,
it will not warn you when someone is trying to do anything bad to or on your network but it will
help you to find out. Additionally, it will not manipulate things on the network, it will only display
things from it. Furthermore, it does not send packets on the network or does other active things.
System requirements for Windows operating systems. It will support any current version of
Windows that is still in the extended supported lifetime and any modern 64 bit AMD64/x86 64

also 300 MB available disk space but capture files require more space from your system.
Additionally, it recommends 1280x1024 resolution or higher, at least 16 bit color and a supported
network card for capturing ethernet and/or 802.11 (wi fi). Wireshark supports most Unix and Unix

The Stranger By Simmel
Simmel defines the stranger , as the man who comes today and stays tomorrow . The stranger is
seen as an element of the group that provides a role that no other member of the group can play.
Thus the stranger can obtain objectivity that members of the group cannot, and has freedom. The
stranger is free from everyone and everything because he/she is impartial, since he/she does not
know anyone on a personal level. This leads to trust in the strangerbecause individuals know the
stranger does not know anyone close to them to reveal personal information. Simmel also
defines the stranger as the union of closeness and remoteness meaning that the ones who are
physically close to us are mentally far away, and the ones who are remote to us are in contrast
near. The stranger is close to us by general observations and far from us because these general
observations can apply to anyone. The stranger is also mobile making it easy to move between
social groups. Simmel s analysis of the stranger exemplifies immigration is the United States.

Great Expectations Estella Rudeness Quotes
In the book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Estella is raised to be hateful to all men and
to break their hearts. While being raised by her adoptive mother Miss Havisham, Estella never

Throughout Great Expectations, Estella is very rude, deceptive, and proud. Estella shows multiple
examples of her rudeness throughout Charles Dickensbook. For example, when Miss Havisham
tells Estella to play cards with Pip, she replies with, with this boy! Why, he is a common laboring
boy! (Dickens 625). This shows how Estella is rude because, when your parents, adoptive or not,

Dance Of The Call Bells Essay
When admitted to a hospital patients may feel they have little control over their situation and the
surrounding environment. Using a call bell to meet their needs is perhaps one of a few things that
gives patients a feeling that they still have some control. The title of the article Dance of the Call
Bells: Using Ethnographyto Evaluate Patient Satisfaction with Quality of Care, suggests that the
key phenomenon of the study was the evaluation of patients satisfaction with quality of care they
received in terms of their experience in the use of call bells (Deitrick, Bokovoy, Glenn, Panik,
2006). The title did not describe the population, group or community under study, other than stating
that the population was patients . The title did not state that phenomenon was also looked at and
analyzed through perspectives of family members and staff, nor did it mention that the study was
done on a med surgical unit.
The abstract of the study clearly and concisely summarized the main features of the report. It stated
that the study was conducted as a qualitative, ethnographic research. Then, it briefly described the
problems associated with call bells and how these problems affected patients perceptions regarding
the quality of care. It explained that the study identified three interrelated themes regarding
communication through call bells including answering the call bell, communicating the patient s
request to the appropriate health care provider and following through with the

Meaning Of Mass Media
When we hear the words mass media most of us usually think about information being conveyed
through a modern means of communication like television, internet, or radio. However, the
definition of mass media according to dictionary.com is as follows; any of the means of
communication, as television or newspapers, that reach very large numbersof people.(5) Since this
is a pretty broad definition, this, of course, could also mean books, because they are able to
reach a large number of people, though it takes longer to reach the audiences because of
production and distribution times. Now, of course, things like television, internet, magazines, and
newspapers usually reach more people, there are many books that have sold millions of copies.
Some of these include religious text like the Bible about 2.5 billion have been sold, The Koran at
about 3 billion sold and the Book of Mormon at about 150 million.(1,3) Other famous books that
have sold in the millions according to Ranker.com are A Tale of Two Cities with over 200
million sold and Lord of the Rings with 150 million sold.(2) There are even some children s books
that have sold millions of copies like The Cat in the Hat and the Hungry Caterpillar.(2) Just these
numbers alone are enough to be included in the definition of mass media.
Any book that has these types of numbers has had a very big impact on the world s population. It

When being told a war story, one automatically assumes all that they are hearing is factual, and
that all the trauma, devastation, and victory really happened. However, in the fictional The Things

honest if the emotions behind the story are. O Brien uses techniques such as hyperbolic characters

The Outbreak Of Ebola Virus
The Ebola virus is a pandemic that is of much concern around the world, lately. It was not always
a concern of this magnitude. Ebolavirus is the etiologic agent. It is a relatively new virus,
introduced just in 1970. It was first discovered in Sudan and Zaire (it was named after the Ebola
river is Zaire). The first outbreak occurred in Sudan infecting about 284 people, with a mortality
rate of 53% (Waterman, 1999). Just a few months later, the second strain of the Ebolavirus (Eboz)
became prevalent in Zaire. It had a much higher mortality rate than the strand in Sudan (Ebola
Sudan) of 88% and is still to this day the strain of Ebola with the highest mortality rate. It
infected 318 people during the outbreak of Zaire. Two more strains of this deadly virus were
discovered in 1989 and in 1994, but the mortality rate of those not as high as their predecessors.
Most of the Ebola cases throughout history were located in western and southern Africa in
countries such as Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria (CDC, 2014). Recently, within the
last month, Senegal and the US have seen their first cases of the virus. The new cases have
brought the total death count from Ebola to 3493. The virus itself is native to Africa and is

African American s potential contribution to development was untouched. Unfortunately, racial

Unfortunately, though, this does not make up for everything. As a whole, the African American

Trivium Model Essay
Modern education has, over time, taken the focus off of learning how to learn and has decided to
focus on telling the students what they should learn. They are not given any tools to learn for
themselves. The modern school classroom has a teacher stand in front of a crowded classroom
and he/she tells the students information. They are given very little room to ask question and find
answers. Without the proper foundation of information the children are less likely to remember
what is being taught and worse they are unable to find out more information because they have not
been given the tools to dig deep into subjects. They are expected to give back these fragments of
information in order to prove the teacher did their job. They are not asked to assess the validity of

I know from personal experience that without the proper foundation of information and discipline,
trying to figure out how to learn something becomes very difficult. In the classical education model,
the students are taught within a structure of the Trivium. The trivium consists of three levels of
learning, the grammar stage, the dialectical stage and the rhetorical stage. Each one of these stages
builds upon the previous one. The grammar stage introduces children to broad topics and
information. This is the stage where they are creating memory files or pegs. The students are able
to recite this information when asked, because they have committed it to memory. The grammar
stage leads in to the dialectical stage. This is where the children begin to understand information.
They are taught the discipline of how to find information they can use to add to their original
memory pegs. Here they are also taught how to logically decipher the truth value of the work they
are getting their research from. This stage will help build the wall of information upon their
grammatical foundation.

A focused cost leadership strategy according to Ireland et al (2006) is an action plan the firm
develops to produce goods and services for a narrow market segment at the lowest cost . IKEA
focuses on applying the techniques needed to achieve this cost leadership such as bulk buying,
economical sources of supplies, low cost logistics and store location while at the same time
concentrating on understanding and satisfying the needs.
Although it is a cost leader, IKEA also offers some differentiated features that appeal to its target
customers, including its unique furniture designs, in store playrooms for children, wheelchairs for
customer use, free buggies, reasonably priced restaurants and cafes and extended hours making
shopping at IKEA an experience. Thus, IKEA focused cost leadership strategy also includes some
differentiated features with its low cost products thereby making it a hybrid strategy. (Hitt et al,

container ports and major truck and rail routes. In most instances, they own the large stores but in
order to be flexible and adaptable to penetrate new markets they also facilitate franchises where
there are risks to entry due to unfamiliarity or hostility to the IKEA concept. Their stores have been
described as theme parks masquerading as a furniture outlet (Margonelli, 2002: 112)

Symbolism In John Knowles A Separate Peace
The book, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles can be interpreted more than one way. You can take
it literally, or look into the symbolic meaning of the landmarks of the Devon school, including the
two fearful sites Gene visited in the beginning. As stated in the book by Gene, everything in the
time period revolved around the war. This includes the great symbolism used, so mainly the tree,
the Devon River, and the Naguamsett River. The Devon and Naguamsett Rivers both run through
the campus of Devon. They are exact opposites (pg. 40). The Devon River is clean, freshwater,
and well dammed up. It is described as being a small, narrow river fringed by pine and birch (pg.
42) On the other hand, the Naguamsett River is described as muddy and... Show more content on

It is also the bank of the Devon River that the fearful tree is located (pg. 4 and pg. 43 44). Up to
the point of Finny s accident, it is one of the calmest spots on campus. In fact, Gene directly
connects it to the proud sight of Finny standing on one foot on the branch like a river god , and
seeming to transcend gravity. On the contrary, the Naguamsett is a rough saltwater river. It is
the war itself: dark and unknown. The Naguamsett is dangerous just like the war going on, and
scary like the possibilities of draft or enlistment. I also think that the rivers compare well to the
two main characters, Finny and Gene. Gene is rough and unpredictable (pg. 30 32, pg. 34, and
pg. 48) like the Naguamsett River. He is also the one to acknowledge the dark qualities of the
war more. Gene is less stable (pg. 88 89), and small things can quickly change his attitude. Finny,
though, is a source of fun for everyone (pg. 18 19, pg. 24, and 78 80). He is loyal, charming, and
everyone knows he is a stable presence at Devon (pg. 10 and pg. 12 13). Finny is more like the
Devon River, because he is adventurous, but controlled enough so that he is a safe influence. The
friends are completely opposite personalities like the Devon and Naguamsett

Administration
Windows Server Advantages There are many administration advantages for Windows Servers.
One aspect is domain operations which are an important resource available on the network
through Window Server. Making Window Server a domain controller adds security and the
ability to add local and group policies to the network (Garza, 2010). If Window Server is not
promoted to the status of a domain controller, then it can run simple network operations using peer
to peer structures (Garza, 2010). These are workgroups, and they can only block or allow access
but do not provide control features for the network. The numbers of ... Show more content on

Disadvantages One of the biggest disadvantages is that it does not have a specific organization
which updates and provides services, or software tweaks in a regular manner as Windows does.
Another disadvantage is that the lack of graphical user inters faces, or the absence of free tools and
software when compared to Windows (Host wisely, 2011).
Performance
Windows Server Advantages Windows server offers anywhere access with great flexibility, which
allows a company to build, deploy, and manage applications and websites on premises, in the
cloud, or in hybrid environments using a consistent set of tools and framework Windows server
also offers frameworks, services, and tools to help increase scalability. (Microsoft, 2012).
Disadvantages Windows servers are notorious for being vulnerable to worms while there have been
basically no worms affecting UNIX in the past ten years. Any server running on windows should
really have anti virus software on it just like a desktop would. While window servers are
unaffected by this they are just as susceptible to malicious and mischievous hackers as window
servers and therefore must still be patched UNIX Advantages There are many performance

Richard Wagner was born May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany (notablebiographies.com). Wagner
was a very important person in the nineteenth century due to his poetic writing and criticism
(notablebiographies.com). He introduced the concept of leitmotiv (recurring musical theme that has

(notablebiographies.com). Wagners parents didn t make a lot money so he was in poverty most of
his life (thefamouspeople.com). Wagner s dad, Carl Friedrich Wagner, was a clerk in a police
station and his mother, Johanna Rosine, was unemployed (thefamouspeople.com).
Richard was born during the Napoleonic Wars, a series of conflicts between the French and
English nations (history of war.org). Joseph NicГ©phore Niepce took the first photograph
(infoplease.com). Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833 (infoplease.com). Edgar
Allan Poe published his poem the raven in 1845 (infoplease.com). Abraham Lincoln presented his
anti slavery speech in Springfield in 1858 (infoplease.com). The first U.S transcontinental railroad
was made in 1869 (infoplease.com). The first Kentucky derby happened in 1875 (infoplease.com).

Economic and Monetary Union (Emu)
History In June 1988 the European Council confirmed the objective of the progressive realization of
Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It mandated a committee chaired by Jacques Delors, the
then President of the European Commission, to study and propose concrete stages leading to this
union. Economic and monetary union evolved in three discrete but evolutionary steps.
First step On the basis of the Delors Report, the European Council decided in June 1989 that the
first stage of the realisation of economic and monetary union should begin on 1 July 1990. On this
date, in principle, all restrictions on the movement of capital between Member States were
abolished.

A chronological sequence of events was pre announced for the changeover to the euro. This
scenario was mainly based on detailed proposals elaborated by the EMI
At the same time, the EMI was given the task of carrying out preparatory work on the future
monetary and exchange rate relationships between the euro area and other EU countries. In
December 1996 the EMI presented its report to the European Council, which formed the basis of a
Resolution of the European Council on the principles and fundamental elements of the new
exchange rate mechanism (ERM II), which was adopted in June 1997.
Third step On 1 January 1999 final stage of EMU commenced with the irrevocable fixing of the
exchange rates of the currencies of the 11 Member States initially participating in Monetary Union
and with the conduct of a single monetary policy under the responsibility of the ECB.
The number of participating Member States increased to 12 on 1 January 2001, when Greece
entered the third stage of EMU. Since that day the Bank of Greece has been part of the
Eurosystem. Greece s participation followed a decision taken on 19 June 2000 by the EU Council
В– meeting in the composition of the Heads of State or Government В– that Greece fulfilled the
convergence criteria.
Advantages of the EMU:
В•the costs decrease in transactions with the countries of the euro zone,
В•reduction of the degree of uncertainty among the

  • 2. The Concept Of Cultural Erasure, Inequality And Violence Postcolonialism: The Concept of Cultural Erasure, Inequality and Violence Colonization can be dated back to 1492 with the Spanish venture led by Columbus. Colonialism is defined as The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically (Oxford Dictionary). This expedition spread European influence worldwide, in places such as China, Lebanon, India, and Antigua. European influence is still prevalent today through the crossing of racial lines and shifting of cultures towards a more civilized way of living. Colonialismis still prevalent today, in the form of postcolonialism. Postcolonialism can be defined as America s benefaction to nations worldwide that include dynamic influences in things such as: government, culture, education and economy. One of the concepts erected from colonialism is globalization. Since globalization is a direct effect of colonialism, it is no surprise that globalization influences the same categories as postcolonialism (government, culture, education and economy), making the two concepts almost synonymous with minimal differences. Globalization is defined as the integration of economics and communications of nations through increased contact by technology. Globalization dominates the economic and social side of the field while postcolonialism dwells in the cultural and educational aspects. This European gift has contributed to global conflicts, ... Impact Of Education On The American Education System Education has overtime developed from an institution that lacked what was necessary to properly education men, women and children, to what is now a fairly decent system that prepares people from all across the world. For minorities, or underrepresented ethnic groups in America this is a different case. My focused are of research pertains to the history of educationand how policies and the quality of it has transformed. While we have grown over the decades to provide education for all groups of people there is still equality lacking in our education system. For my research I will be examining how education has changed between the generations in America and how the system is now compared to the late 1800s and 1900s. My research question is how has the quality and available opportunities for underrepresented minority groups changed in the American education system. Fate vs freewill is a common theme throughout the thematic play, Oedipus the King. Starting out, he protagonist, Oedipus, learns of his ill fate; he will marry his mother and kill his father. There is quite a bit of controversy over whether the downfall of his life was caused by his destiny, or by his actions. Ultimately, though, fate played a greater part in the great tragedyof Oedipuslife. There were no choices he could have made that would change the outcome. He was doomed to live out this woeful tale. Early in the play, Oedipus father, Laius, tried to change the inevitable. By killing his son, Laius believed he would not have to be killed by him. In the end, baby Oedipus lived and his fate played out. Oedipus says, Curse the man who took the cruel bonds from off my legs, as I lay in the field. He stole me from death and saved me, no kindly service. Had I died then I would not be so burdensome to friends. (Sophocles21). • 6. Differences Between Television And Television After going over how meaning is made in television, in chapter seven, Mittell goes over how these meanings on television can impact the way that we, as viewers, think about our lives and the world. Mittell goes over the two most popular approaches that are usually used to understand the relationship of the meanings conveyed through televisionand the real world, as a way to escape the world and as a reflection of the world. The escapist and direct reflection approaches, according to Mittell, are not accurate. The escapist approach, which states that people watch television to escape from real life, falls short when considering the news, sports, talk shows, and other reality television programs due to their connection to real life. The direct reflection approach, which states that programming on television is true to viewers lives, fails to take into account fantasy programs and the representation distortion that happens in non fiction programs. Mittell argues that the best way to understand the relationship between television meanings and the way television viewers see the world is to use the refraction approach. The refraction approach states that television meanings refract the world, where programs alter the world around it and its meanings through particular techniques and forms like cinematography and editing. An important term in Mittell s refraction approach is representation. Mittell defines representation as, taking facets of the real world and presenting them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Interlopers The Interlopers : The short story The Interlopers by Saki demonstrates the ironic aura of man vs. nature, and man vs. man. Hector Hugh Munro, pen named Saki, was one of the most popular short story writers during the pre World War I British literature era. He wrote many stories and is often referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were apparent in the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Other stories by Saki include: Gabriel Ernest , The Toys of Peace , and The Storyteller . These short stories specifically illustrate horror, and the advantage of living life outside of the box. While trapped under the tree they realize how idiotic the quarrel has been and vow to become cordial; treating one another as neighbors, instead of as enemies. The men s forgiveness towards each other displays an internal conflict because both had to weigh the pros and cons of ending the feud. Either they make peace and work together to get freed, or they could just stay angry at one another and risk never being rescued from under the tree. Therefore, the three main conflicts displayed in The Interlopers are Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. self. All of which provide a great deal of trouble for both men all through out the novella. Irony also plays a big part in understanding the concept of the story. Without Saki s ironic ways readers would not get a clear idea of what the moral is after reading the novella. As To begin, Georg and Ulrich are fighting over land, which in the outcome is the cause of their death. In the beginning they had the intentions of searching across the useless spurs in hopes of gunning down a human rival. All along the only foe that they truly had was within the nature that was surrounding them. Saki ended the story with one word; wolves. • 9. The Causes Of Wealth Inequality In America Grace Ogunkunle Prof. D. Fozouni English 102 (SBVC) Research Paper Dec 8, 2017. Wealth Gap In America Americans today live in a distinctly unequal society. Inequality is now wider than it used to be in the last century, and the division in income, wages, and wealth are broader than they are in other developed economies of the world. Wealth inequality is the imbalance of wealth or income within a society, and it is one of the most vital economic challenge the US is facing today because the distribution of wealth is more dispersed, making the inequality in wealth distribution at its highest. While the matter has been discussed for many years, the actual income disparity in the U.S. has heightened and is now verging on an extreme gap that portends to impede long term economic growth. The huge gap between the wealthy and poor is squeezing the U.S. economy, the wealth gap threatens economic growth by diminishing social mobility and producing a less educated workforce who are not able to compete in the global economy. unrestrained level of income inequality causes political pressures, it discourages trade, investment, and hiring. The present level of income inequality in the U.S. is shrinking GDP growth, and the world s largest economy is struggling to recover from the Great Recession. Wealth inequality has become a hot topic in recent years, this is because the return rate on capital, such as stocks or real estate, outruns that of economic growth which resulted in the wealthiest grasping a growing share of wealth, leading to increasing inequality. The unequal distribution of wealth has been a major hallmark of the U.S economy, and among its most notable and lasting results, but until it was brought to the awareness of the public by the Occupy movement s catch phrase referring to the 1% of the populace who control half of the nation s wealth, this issue had not been brought to the limelight of public economic and political discourse since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and almost every American is basically unaware of the true magnitude and character of the unequal distribution of wealth in our country. Skeptecism of History and Science A skeptic is defined in two different ways, a skeptic could be considered as a person who question the validity and raise doubts to all accepted opinions or accepted conclusion; a skeptic could also be a philosopher who denies the possibility of knowledge, or even rational belief, in some sphere. When knowledge is primarily presented by an abundance of assumption is brought up. The first of Svidrigailov s dreams begins with a mouse running all over his body. The dream was so strange he thought it was real. Yet, Svidrigailov surprises the reader: But her loose fair hair was wet; there was a wreath of roses on her head. The stern and already rigid profile of her face looked as though chiselled of marble too, and the smile on her pale lips was full of an immense unchildish misery and sorrowful appeal (502). • 24. Convergent Evolution Of Human Evolution A surprisingly recent instance of human evolution has been detected among the peoples of East Africa. It is the ability to digest milk in adulthood, conferred by genetic changes that occurred as recently as 3,000 years ago, a team of geneticists has found. The finding is a striking example of a cultural practice the raising of dairy cattle feeding back into the human genome. It also seems to be one of the first instances of convergent human evolutionto be documented at the genetic level. Convergent evolution refers to two or more populations acquiring the same trait independently. Throughout most of human history, the ability to digest lactose, the principal sugar of milk, has been switched off after weaning because the lactase enzyme that breaks the sugar apart is no longer needed. But when cattle were first domesticated 9,000 years ago and people later started to consume their milk as well as their meat, natural selection would have favored anyone with a mutation that kept the lactase gene switched on.
