What Are The Challenges Of Thomas Becket s Persuasion
In the historical novel If All the Swords in England by Barbra Willard, the author presents the
brave challenges that confront Thomas Becket during the final years of his life from 1164 to
1170. King Henry II is the ruler of England, and Thomas Becket is the archbishop of Canterbury.
There is serious conflict between the two leaders. Twin brothers, Simon and Edmund, witness all
these events, and they reveal to the reader the great affection and respect the people have for the
archbishop, the love Thomas has for the Church, and his unstoppable courage even when his life
is threatened. Thomas Becket is loved and respected by the people of England. Archbishop
Thomas Becket served the people in many ways. One of the ways was his promise that

Victor Martinez s Parrot In The Oven
The title of this book is called Parrot in the Oven and is an extended metaphor that means there is a
parrot who is complaining about being too hot in the shade when he is actually in the oven.
Meaning, Manny used to be ignorant, but he no longer is because of the events he went through.
Victor Martinez, the author of Parrot in the Oven is a Bildungsroman because the character Manny
grows up throughout the story by learning through racism, social hierarchy, seeing gang activity,
and watching Eddie go down the wrong path. Manny will begin to realize that he wants to change
his life around.
Manny learns his first lesson through hierarchy and racism. Manny watched a boxing match
between a Mexican and a black boy, and it is extremely racially intense. At the end of the chapter
Manny had to take off Lencho s gloves because nobody else would do it for him. Manny said,
They said that he brought embarrassment to them, and worse, caused a loss of unity between them
and their black brothers. (139) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eddie steals a purse from an elderly lady. Manny was given a second chance by the black man. In
that instant of trying to call out to Eddie everything changed. It was like I d seen my own fate.
(210) Manny said this because he realized that he is on the completely wrong path in life. Manny
realizes that Eddie is starting to pick up character traits like his father and Manny cannot turn out
to be like his own dad. Manny knows that he does not want to throw away his life so he turns it
around because he knows what the outcome will be if he does not change.
In conclusion, this novel is a Bildungsroman, a coming of age novel where the main character
learns a valuable life lesson, because through racism, social hierarchy, seeing gang activity, and
watching Eddie go down the wrong path. Manny realizes what kind of person he wants to be and
therefore, grows up. He is no longer the Parrot in the

UTEP Incident Observation
For my UTEP event I went to the fossil and rock exhibit. Although I was limited to only a few
exhibits, those exhibits were very interesting. Some of the exhibits that I saw were the rock,
fossil and history exhibits. The one I found most interesting was the rock exhibit. This exhibit
was made up of rocks found in this general area (El Paso New Mexico and Mexico). It had a wide
range of rocks from crystals to quarts to obsidian rocks. The one I found most beautiful was the
Calcite crystal. This crystal was from Durango Mexico and it almost looks like a white rose. This
experience for me was very educational. I learned many things like, how the pressure on a rock can
affect the way it looks and feels. I also learned that at one point El Paso

Human Suffering And Media Analysis
In the context of the current mediatised society, the media have become the platform where the
encounter with the other increasingly takes place, and in particular, where the public becomes
aware of circumstances of human suffering that are happening far away from their immediate
locale (Thompson, 1995). Even though the media have expanded the field of view of the spectator,
the mediated encounter with the distant sufferer is structured over an abysmal gap (Bauman, 1993)
between the scene of suffering and the safe reality of the spectator sheltered behind the screen. This
paradox has raised a number of moral and ethical considerations. The question at the heart of the
debate is to what extent the new visibility of the other can in fact... Show more content on

Taking a normative standpoint, Silverstone maintains that the media should function as a public
space that works for the human condition and not against it (2007: 33), a moral space that promotes
the inclusion and care of the other. This cosmopolitan disposition towards the other, especially in
the context of distant suffering, can then become the foundation of transnational solidarity and of
the pursuit of justice overall (Silverstone, 2007). Silverstone advocates for the media to adopt
specific representational principles that foster this sort of cosmopolitan engagement. In particular,
he proposes the notion of proper distance , a theoretical principle that captures the dialectical
coexistence between the common humanity of the other and his irreducible difference (Silverstone,
2007). Proper distance , in other words, identifies the degree of proximity that presents the other as
other with humanity (Chouliaraki and Orgad, 2011); who deserves the dignity that is to be
accorded to all humans but is also unique and implicated in specific geopolitical

Well-Organized Government In Ancient Egypt
Introduction
The people of ancient Egypt started as hunters and gatherers. Then they settled in the Nile river
valley. When the people settled the food was more plentiful. And when the food was more plentiful
there were more. And with more people, they had to have all of the seven indicators.
Government
Every complex society needs a well organized government. In ancient Egypt having a well
organized government was important. The pharaoh was the most important person in the
government. The Pharaoh was the supreme leader of all of ancient Egypt, they even called him a
god.The Pharaoh had so many things to do being a leader/god that he needed help. So the Pharaoh
decided who was the vizier(someone who helps the Pharaoh decide what to do) so someone ... Show

Ancient Egypt also had a complex religion that tied into well organized government. The ancient
Egyptians were deeply religious. The ancient Egyptians would never worship without being
purified. They also believed that their gods had supernatural powers, and if they worshiped their
gods they would live a happy and long life. A way to worship gods is to pay tributes. They were
so religious that they built temples. They would also perform ceremonies so that ancient Egypt
would not fall into chaos. How does complex religion tie into well organized government? Every
government has a pharaoh and in the religious perspective, the pharaoh is also a god. The people
of ancient Egypt would treat him like a god and worshiped him. They would pay tributes. And
when he died they covered him in gold and riches and everything he had before. According to
ducksters.com, the people built 2 types of temples the first is cultus and the second is Mortuary
the mortuary was built for the dead pharaoh. So the pharaoh got his own temple built. The
ancient Egyptians worked a lot for their religion. The ancient Egyptians were the ones that built
the pyramids and that took a lot of work. So why did the ancient Egyptians just slack and not to
do it? Well because it was apart of their religion and they had to do it. They also built the Sphinx
for their gods and religion. The ancient Egyptians also had big ceremonies that would take a lot of

High School Start Time Research Paper
Students in high school struggle with sleep so seriously that medical professionals call it an
epidemic, with 87% of students getting less than the recommended amount of sleep (Richter). It s
difficult to balance sports and extracurriculars with school and homework, and, come junior and
senior year, collegeapplications and jobs as well. All these activities in students lives leave them
little time for a good night s sleep. Unfortunately for them, sleep is actually crucial, as it has not
only been shown to improve GPA, but also help students with memorizing information (Hershner).
Not to mention that most high schools start classes early in the morning, with 29.9% of schools
starting before 7:30 am, according to a 2012 survey (CDC). According... Show more content on

The goal of this restructuring would be to encourage students to go to sleep at an appropriate hour
and get enough sleep to function best the next morning. The tenets of the new schedule would be a
later school start time, which we hope would allow for students to sleep longer in the morning.
Schools that have implemented later start times have experienced both academic improvements and
better overall school climates ( Why Change ). Also, later school times are important for teenagers
as their circadian rhythms make them more inclined to go to bed later than adults (Hershner), so
more sleep in the morning would account for their different sleep habits. Furthermore, a limit would
be imposed on homework load. Students often stay up very late finishing their homework, so
limiting homework loads will curb this problem. Additionally, we would offer seminars for parents
at schools, teaching them about the recommending tactics to help their kids not only get more
sleep, but work more efficiently. Studies have been conducted that show improvements in kids
sleeping schedules when parents impose and enforce a sleeping schedule (Richter). Alongside
teaching them useful parenting practices, we would also teach them of the importance of sleep, and
how it has been linked to academic

Mylan and coordinate the message we want to project out in public. Bearing in mind the recent

Situation
A recent price adjustment of our EpiPen Auto Injector product has triggered a media firestorm.

government entities alike. Outraged parents many government officials are calling for investigation
into our company and our practices. All this negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The EpiPen Auto Injector s contribution to our company s financial performance currently
represents about 10 %. Additionally, Mylan s sales revenue from two pack EpiPen is approximately
45%, which covers manufacturing, distributing, enhancing, and investing in future development of
high quality products.
We need to reaffirm our position as a company delivering high quality products. One of our
competitors suffered from product recall due to possibility of delivering incorrect dosage. The rest
our competing products captured only about 7% of market share due to reluctance of customer
switching products. Therefore, this is an evidence of our customer trusting and preferring our
EpiPen over competing products.
Doing our art in saving lives, we have increased an access to EpiPen by issuing a saving card to
users that will effectively cut the cost of two pack EpiPen by $300. In addition, we have doubled
the eligibility for patient assistance program, which practically eliminates out of pocket cost for

Law Of Gratitude Essay
8.The Law of Gratitude: The Law of Gratitude plays out similar to the Law of Cause and Effect
or the natural principle of action and reaction. As we look at the law itself, when we express
thankfulness to the God Force for that which we have received (even though it is still in the
unseen), it is an expenditure of force, therefore our gratitudecannot fail to reach God, and when it
does the reaction is an instantaneous move toward you. Consider two properly aligned magnets.
They are two forces moving in opposite directions while moving toward one another. Gratitude
draws you and the Creative Force, God, directly toward each other. If our gratitude is strong
enough and consistent then there will always be a move of that which we are co creating toward
us. When the God Force moves toward us it brings all that it is. The Law of Gratitude also
dictates that if our heart is not full of gratitude, then something else will take its place. Physics
teaches that nature will not tolerate a vacuum. That is to say that if something is removed then
something else must take its place. If our hearts are not filled with gratitude, then our hearts will be
filled with ungratefulness. An ungrateful heart will take you from what you want as rapidly as a
grateful heart will take you toward what you want. The Law of Gratitude nourishes our faith,
because as a grateful heart and mind continually expects good things, expectation becomes faith.
This faith then, becomes both the cornerstone and the capstone of what it is we are building which
comes only from our Universal Supplier, God. Gratitude toward God has the power... Show more

Social Security
The United States Social Security System is often considered a political football, frequently
debated on whether the government should continue to manage it or should it be privatized. Either
way, in today s economy, it s vital to the welfare of many. The main purpose of the system is to
provide benefits to America s workers and their families for retirement, disability, and early death.
(Unknown Social SecurityProCon) According to the data collected in the 2000 census, Social

A 1972 amendment tied increases in Social Security retirement benefits to increases in the
Consumer Price Index. In 1974, Social Security insurance was taken over by the Social Security
Administration, and in 1983 an amendment allowed partial taxation of the benefits given to upper
income recipients. In 1999, payroll deductions for Social Security were set at 6.2% of annual wages
below $72,600, and payroll deductions for Medicare were 1.45% of annual wages (no upper limit),
with employers contributing matching amounts. (Columbia Encyclopedia Infoplease) The rates
previously listed continue to increase, often annually. The Social Security tax for 2010 is 6.2% of
the first $106,800. Earnings above that are exempt from additional tax. In addition to the Social
Security tax, all employee s taxable earnings are taxed a 1.45% Medicare tax. Both taxes must be
matched by the employer. (Averkamp Accounting Coach)
With all the tax revenue being generated, the next question often asked is; what is the best
approach for investing it. This again, often leads to controversy. Social Security funds are invested
in federal securities, mainly long term bonds. In 1997 a government advisory panel proposed that
some of the revenues be invested in stocks and bonds to generate higher returns. The panel was
divided over whether the money should be invested by the government or by individuals, as well as
the amount that should be shifted

12 Monkeys Anthropology
12 Monkeys is a 1995 film directed by Terry Gilliam in 1995. It is a science fiction film dealing
with time travel. Time travel stories have been used in different films and other art media, but 12
Monkeys treats time travel in an unusual way. It is reasonable to say that 12 Monkeys does not
have a very clear narrative like other classic Hollywood films do. And this messiness is mostly
caused by how the filmitself deals with time travel and how it presents it to viewers. 12 Monkeys
creates an uncertainty of time travel. This sort of uncertainty does make the narrative less
comprehensible, however, it is this uncertainty that attracts the audience.
The story of 12 Monkeys itself is not very hard to understand. The story happens in 2035. Because

Taking a Look at Hinduism
Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that
one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex,
offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of
what happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu
concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just
one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with
certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading
being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see
the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many,
God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of
Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are
manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is
both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being,
everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus worship many Gods, but they also believe that
the divine is singular or one. These Gods are representations of different aspects of the overall God.
Although their worship of multiple

The Importance Of Public And Public Health
The health of the public is a constantly growing and never ending cycle. There is always a threat
or growing concern that can/will affect people s health. Public health can be defined as a society
coming together and working diligently to ensure the conditions in which people live are healthy.
Ensuring that the conditions are favorable where people live and increasing their healthconditions
should be a goal for all societies (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). Community health is also an important topic
when looking at public healthbecause there are some similarities with both. However, community
health is explained as having a defined group of individuals whose health status, conditions and
actions are aimed at promoting, preserving and protecting their health (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). An
example of this would be a place like Atlanta, Georgia reviewing the health status of everyone living
there. Working together with public and private entities, they can protect, promote and preserve the
health of people in Georgia (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). Other than public and community health, there
is another form of health called personal health. Personal health is defined as an individual that
makes decisions on the health care received for themselves and/or family members in their
household (Bartlett, Jones, 2010).
This differs from public and community health because personal health is focused on the individual
/and or family where community and public health are aimed at

A Memorable Person
What makes someone special, important, and memorable is judged by people differently. In my
personal opinion, what makes a person memorable is how he or she has impacted your life, for
better or for worse. I decided to deviate from the obvious choice of a dear family member or an
especially great teacher, instead, choosing someone in my life whose impact has been recent.
My friend Oniqa Urmi. Oniqa enriches the lives of those around her, understands people where
others fail to, and is unforgettable to anyone who has the privilege to know her. To begin, I met
Oniqa about 5 years ago during my freshman year of high school. It was our first class of
Physical Education in the gym playing volleyball. After some instructions from our teacher
broke the class up into partners, and surprise my partner was Oniqa. Both of us were extremely
shy, quiet, and didn t talk much during the 45 minutes we spent hitting a ball back and forth.
Luckily our friendship didn t with second period PE. With time we became good friends. In
reality, the first day we met wasn t the start to the typical friendship. Looking back, we were an
unlikely pairing that without realizing it had many similarities and experiences. Despite our
somewhat awkward first encounter, the following years spent getting to know each other better I
learned she was a lot more than a shy girl in my PE class. As mentioned above, I chose Oniqa as
my interviewee because of the impact she has had on my life in the time I have

Cleopatra and Her Relationship with Roman Caesars
Stacy Schiff is a remarkable writer and a historian. She has a Pulitzer Prize to prove it, and she is
also a guest writer for the New York Times and various newspapers. Her latest work is Cleopatra: A
Life. Schiff tells how Cleopatra was a very remarkable woman. Even after Octavian, Cleopatra was
known as the wicked women in the world.
Schiff tells much about Cleopatra s life involving Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Schiff ensures us
that Cleopatra had one of the top educations from Alexandria. Caesar did not only stay in Egypt for
Cleopatra s seductress ways, however Caesar wanted to get rein over his enemies. When Caesar
was murdered, by a group of schemers, in the Roman Senate, his adopted great nephew Gaius
Octavius was his only heir. Mark Antony thought he was heir to the Roman Empire but however,
Caesar had different plans.
Janet Suzman tells the story of how Shakespeare wrote the play about Cleopatra and Mark
Antony. Suzman says Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a horrific story of a formally
mighty conqueror who is infatuated with the Queen of Egypt. Antony was so obsessed with
Cleopatra and how she led him to his death. (Draycott, 38 44) Suzman said that Cleopatra and
Antony had a horrible love story. Schiff tells the story of Cleopatra and Antony very similar to
Suzman. However, Cleopatra and Antony s relationship had its problems. Schiff believed that
Antony and Cleopatra had much in common. They were both left out of Caesar s will. Schiff also

The Cave Paintings Of Chauvet Pont D Arc Cave
The cave paintings of Chauvet Pont D Arc are one of the oldest prehistoric sites in the world. It
is located in the Ardeche region of southern France. Chauvet Pont D Arc cave was only
discovered as recently as 1994. Jean Marie Chauvet and his team of cavers just happened to
stumble upon it when they removed a rumble of stones that blocked the passageway (Introduction
to the Cave). This is such an extraordinary piece of art history due to the time period and what it
can tell us about our history. Through the rich history, to the art inside the caves, and the
interpretation of what it means, Chauvet Pont D Arc cave it is nothing less then a story that has to
be told. When you walk into the 400 hundred meter long cave, it has enormous chambers. The floor
is scattered of archaeological and paleontological remains, including the skulls and bones of cave
bears, which hibernated there, along with the skulls of an ibex and two wolves. Bears also left
remains of scratch marks and immeasurable amount of footprints (Clottes, Chauvet). In 1998, the
distinguished prehistorian Dr. Jean Clottes headed the first research team in Chauvet Cave, under
great security. Chauvet Cave s importance is based on two factors: firstly, the aesthetic quality of
these Paleolithic cave paintings, and secondly, their great age. With one exception, all of the cave
art paintings have been dated between 30,000 33,000 years ago (Introduction to the Cave). These

Essay on The Indoor Air Quality of Natatoriums
The indoor air quality of natatoriums has become a significant health hazard, particularly regarding
competitive swimmers. The lack of regulations and legislature has made this situation worse.
HVAC systems, Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning, are designed to control the air temperature.
They have many different uses, for example, regulating the humidity and fresh air turnover rate.
However, they do not clean the air . As said in the USA Swimming article The Air Quality Issue,
...air quality is directly affected by the water quality, i.e. bad water = bad air! This bad air they
speak of stems from the chloramines within the water. Chloramines are chlorinecompound that

Some of the physical symptoms attributed to disinfection byproducts include coughing, eye and
nose irritation, anemia, stomach discomfort, damaged hair and skin. Severe symptoms include
wheezing or aggravating asthma. It has also been found that the routine breathing of irritants may
increased sensitivity to other types of irritants such as fungi and bacteria. Improperly balanced
chlorinated pools can actually cause severe asthma. These findings may explain why swimmers are
more prone to exercise induced asthma than athletes in other sports. Results show that nitrogen
trichloride or trichloramine is a cause of occupational asthma in swimming pool workers like
lifeguards and swim instructors, says Dr. K. Thickett of the Occupational Lung Diseases Unit at the
Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. In Dr. Thickett s study, his subjects either stopped taking inhaled
corticosteroids altogether, or their asthma symptoms decreased significantly once they were placed
in an environment away from the swimming pools. Dr. Thickett s study has been supported by
research from other European and Australian sources. Outdoor aquatic facilities have plenty of
fresh air and UV light, which means they are not as susceptible to the chloramine problem.
Chloramine formation can be accelerated by a wide variety of aquatic activities.

Russia And Japanese Industrialization Analysis
In the 1800s, Europe began to industrialize, slowly transitioning from an agricultural to industrial
economy. As people began to migrate to cities and factories began pop up all over, along with
railroads and telegraphs, the militaries and economic might of these countries began to grow.
However, while Europe was busy industrializing, Russia and Japan remained isolated with
agriculture based economies. When Japan s weakness was revealed by the arrival of Commodore
Perry with large gunboats and a powerful US Navy, Russia s inferiority was revealed when they
decisively lost the Crimean War to the better equipped European military. Afterward, both resolved
to better themselves and modernize like their European counterparts. While Japan and Russia s...

In contrast to Russia and Japan, Great Britain s industrialization occurred differently. England was
actually the first to industrialize and industrial Great Britain served as a model for Japan s and
Russia s later on. Industrialization was a slow, organic process in England started after feudalism
but did cause much of the populace to leave their farms and migrate to urban centers, causing the
creation of tenements. However, England s industrialization was privately incentivized. Rather than
the government creating economic incentives to modernize, England s few natural resources and
therefore ambition to take the resources of others caused private capitalists to invest money into
building factories and growing industries. And like Japan, England s industrialization was very
successful, as the technological advancements and new innovation allowed their superior military
to overcome other countries and imperialize, take over new regions. Thus, even though
industrialization in different countries around the world did have differences, industrialization as a
process that countries go through have similar characteristics. It causes massive social changes and

Symbolism In The Birthmark By Nathaniel Hawthorne
As the last crimson tint of the birthmark that sole token of human imperfection faded from her
cheek, the parting breath of the now perfect woman passed into the atmosphere, and her soul,
lingering a moment near her husband, took its heavenward flight (Hawthorne 13). In 1843,
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Birthmark, a tragic and unexpected short story. In the beginning of
The Birthmark, Alymer, a man of science, marries a young beautiful woman named Georgiana. One
day Alymer noticed a mark on Georgiana s cheek, and over time his obsession with the thought of
removing it scientifically caused the death of his wife. Therefore, in the short story The Birthmark,
by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Alymer pushes the scientific boundaries too far and his experiment is
unjustified.
In the nineteenth century, the religion in America, was mainly Christianity. Before Christianity,
there were the Puritans, they believed that it was necessary to be in a covenant relationship with
God in order to redeem one from one s sinful condition, that God had chosen to reveal salvation

The Puritans also believed in predestination, which means God knew the future of the person the

Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining
Gram Staining
Formal Lab Report
Miranda King
Intro Microbiology
Dr. Hendrickson
13 September 2017
Purpose
For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining
technique, as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram
negative stains. This technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and
Safranin. These dyes are used in order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For
example, Gram positive staining will result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will
result in a red or pinkish color (University of Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016).
When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is categorized as a gram positive stain because the
alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was not successful. Its cell wall is made with a
thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a
bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses the crystal violet dye color after
being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become categorized as a gram
negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall made of a thin
layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the red dye (Case,
Funke, Tortora). Bacteria have different shapes and these shapes determine what family they belong
in. There are

Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam...
The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great
change in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly
toward colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most
of all women, and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help
them to rebuild their identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can
be used to examine it from different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain
s Testament of Youth, for example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own
diaries and letters sent from around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a
woman s perspective during the war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary
source and a collection of stories all looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo
in particular and it provides multiple views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in
Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a
secondary source, as the book is a collection of her own essays and thus likely has notes of
personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing in the facts and somewhat
journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises, while
a work of fiction, is a novel that focuses on characters dealing with the

The Existence Of God. Throughout The Years As Human Beings
The Existence of God Throughout the years as human beings keep learning about the world we are
finding out that we are living in a world where evil surrounds us. This belief conflicts with the
beliefs of theism, one who believes in a God or Gods, especially a personal God who s in control of
the world. If there was an all powerful, all knowing, and all good God, then he should have the
knowledge that there s evil in the world, he should have the benevolence to want to stop the evil,

An uncontrollable and unnecessary evil is the example of all powerful, all knowing, and all evil
being known as Satan. Some try to justify evil by blaming it on Satan. God doesn t create evil;
Satan does (taken from Doing Philosophy, Lewis Vaughn). This argument helps solidify the
theistic beliefs that there s an all powerful, all knowing, and all good God who is aware of how
much evils is brought in the world by humans and is able to control it and keep it in equilibrium
with the good. If we were controlled by a force beyond our control like God, then we would be
perfectly good beings who would always choose the good decision over the evil one. Some of
the evil in this world is said to be caused by humans and the choices we choose. This is
implemented that we live in a world where our actions aren t constrained by any limiting factor,
meaning we have the freewill to choose to act on our own moral values and choose between evil
or good. These people believe that, the price we pay for having free will is the existence of evil
(taken from Doing Philosophy, Lewis Vaughn). Although some argue that, a being who has free
will and yet always choose the good does not seem to be logically impossible (taken from Doing

The Challenges Of Diversity In The Film Industry
Diversity in The Film Industry
There is no questioning the fact that diversity is vital to a community; however, the way the
film industry is makes films is forced and feels as if they are simply checking off boxes to create
diversity. This allows a question to be posed: is no diversity better than forced diversity? This is
a question that comes up a lot in the twenty first century and is something that is asked when
looking at film. The film industry before the twenty first century featured very little diversity,
and minorities usually received supporting roles. Diversity has increased in the twenty first
century; however, there is still room for improvement. One criticism of modern film is the lack
of true diversity. People believe that film has been whitewashed or the historical event and
cultural practices have been changed to be more desireable or more easily understood for white
audiences. A mild example can be seen in Aloha which was released in 2015, where the actors
casted for asian and hawaiian role were white. An extreme example can be seen in Birth of a
Nation released in 1915, where white actors donned black face paint and fought against Ku Klux
Klan members that were protecting the Aryan cause. The film industry has moved away from
blatant acts of racism and now see diversity as a way to make more money, rather than a way to
represent all races and cultures. Although in the twenty first century film has more diversity than
films before the twenty first

Why Was Hitchcock Considered An Auteur
Every film that is made has a collective group of people who lend their vision to a film. The term
auteur theory, originating in France in the 1950 s, is a French word that means author and in the
world of cinema that would mean the director is the one who is the major creative force behind the
film. As stated in the article The Auteur Theory, the term author carries another association namely,
the idea of a lone, individual creator. With the word auteur being involved it means that the director
is not only the one in charge of directing the film, he would have say or input of other mediums
like for instance a painter or a writer. They are rebels against a collective group effort and instead
go rogue in making decisions on their own disregarding input from the team and most importantly
the studio backing the film. The directors choice to take on full ownership of films leaves... Show

I had seen his version of Psycho and really loved it. Watching Shadow of a Doubt, it proved why
Hitchcock is considered an auteur in many ways. While the term was coming into play,
Hitchcock had a unique vision in his films that differentiated with other filmmakers. He is a
superb master of building suspense and mystery, keeping the audience s nerves always on high
alert. His cinematic technique exemplified camera viewpoints, editing, suspense building. His
shot of facial expressions in the film is startling especially in Shadow of a Doubt because it
showed changes in personality in an instance. When you have films that have strong structure and

making all his films his, putting a stamp on them. I think what separates him from others is the fact
that he had cameo appearances where he can have his image promoted in his own way. It s like an

Analysis Of The Fire Next Time By James Baldwin
In the United States, all citizens are entitled to a freedom of choice, under which they may choose
their beliefs and ideals. Unfortunately, with this freedom , people lose their sense of truth and
reality, and must rely upon the ideals of times past and present to ground themselves in this world.
The Fire Next Time, written by James Baldwin, examines this issue in Down At The
Cross , an account of the author s experience with founding his reality on religion and with his
continuing struggles with race and society. In this religious record, Baldwin discusses how he
finds a home in religion and how he spends the majority of his life in his religious career, both of
which offer a sense of safety for his lost soul. Consequently, he then describes his mistake for
trusting religion to act as his foundation as he then learns the stupefying truth of his God s
negligence, how his God takes no action to save Baldwin s people from the depths of society.
Therefore, in order to prevent the reader from resorting to the same alternative, Baldwin intends
to persuade the reader to not base their reality upon the beliefs of others or of a denomination, but
solely upon the facts of life which stand before them. He hopes to discourage the reader by
informing of the horror and the harrowing pain he experiences with having his world shaken to the
foundation. Baldwin achieves this by accentuating the shock of his realization about religion and
his God, showing the reader how this affects him as a means of persuasion.
Perrott !2
In order for Baldwin to convince the reader (to not base their reality in the beliefs of others) (is
this necessary to keep?), he elaborates upon the lurid realizations of his God and of his faith, which
changes his and the reader s perception of religion for the remainder of the book.
Since these feelings are particularly strong for Baldwin, he mirrors his experience with strong
emotional language to bring life into the story and accentuate the importance of the event, which
grasps the reader s attention as well as their interest. Baldwin exemplifies this strategy when he
illustrates the severity of his emotions at the realization of his God s negligence. Baldwin describes
his agony:

Critical Analysis Of Hester Prynne
In the critical essay On The Scarlet Letter by D.H. Lawrence, Lawrence criticizes the portrayal of
Hester Prynne in the novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lawrence displays his
views of the novel by using juvenalian satire to express his thoughts in a humorous, insightful way.
He narrows down on his scrutiny of the novel s main character, Hester Prynne. In his analysis, he
focuses on Hester Prynne s devilish acts in seducing Dimmesdale which is a hidden sin. D.H.
Lawrence effectively utilizes a mocking tone, a staccato like syntax, and a biblical allusion.
Lawrence uses a mocking tone to convey his thoughts about how Hester Prynne is the devil.
One example of how Lawrence demonstrates a mocking tone is when he states, Oh, Hester, you
are a demon. A man must be pure, just that you can seduce him to a fall (Lawrence 1). Lawrence
criticizes Hester by saying that she has the capability to destroy someone who is perfectly pure.
Even the best person in the world would instantly fail just because of Hester according to
Lawrence. He also states that The greatest triumph a woman can have, especially an American
woman. Is the triumph of seducing a man: especially is he is pure. (Lawrence 1). Lawrence
especially berates Hester for committing adultery, as he believes that adultery is one of the
biggest sins that one can commit. His mocking tone in this remark, conveys how he thinks that
Hester is the worst character in the novel due to all of her actions. Lawrence s mocking tone
shows how he thinks that Hawthorne accepts adultery too easily. In order to express Lawrence s
dismay for Hester Prynne, he uses a staccato like syntax. He uses short sentences to express the
importance of what he is saying. For example, he states Flop. , Flop goes spiritual love. in two
different lines (Lawrence 1). By stating these quotes, it also represents how Hester would never
find true love because of how much of an awful person she is He states his thoughts in two short
sentences to express his ideas quickly and effectively. This is because he thinks Hawthorne is too
accepting about the idea and act of adultery. His use of these short phrases allows Lawrence to
express his thought efficiently and effectively.

turns to synesthesia. Synesthesia, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the use of
metaphors in which terms relating to one kind of sense impression are used to describe sense
impressions of other kinds (OED). This form description is used to describe the speakers the
sensations he is feeling and the images in his imagination. The imagination is where Keats s
bower is located which affects the definition of the bower. A bower, in the poetic sense, is
supposed to be an idealized abode, not realized in any actual dwelling (OED) which is the reason
the speaker flies there to escape, due to its idealized state. However, Keats s ideas on the
imagination affect the bower and ultimately lead to the speaker s choice to leave the bower and
return to reality. Through this journey, synesthesia is only seen in the instances of intense sensation

Lady Mary MontaguВґs Travel Writing Essay
Lady Mary Montagu s letters are a form of travel writing that contributes to the exploration of
issues; such as feminism, gender, health, class and culture through an epistolary form. During the
time in which Lady Mary Montagu wrote her letters travel was a means for commerce and trade.
Contrasted to this form of travel writing, is Oscar Wildes Symphony in Yellow. This is in the form
of a poem, which is simplistic in its structure and appearance but not in its content or meanings.
The title of the poem suggests that it has a substantial connection to music; however the reader is
presented with a poem centred on the narrator s view of a location. Similar to the form of poetry

Her open attitude allows her to see society both subjectively and objectively. She is both
understanding and does not stereotypically analyse situations. To the reader her experiences
provide a varied account of different cultures and the gender norms within them. They believed I
was so locked up in that machine, that it was not in my power to open it, which contrivance they
attributed to my husband. Here again she acknowledges the way other cultures differ from her
own. Judith Still recognises the way in which she is; concerned not to fall into the Orientalizing
clichГ©s of Early Modern men s travel writing, which typically represents Muslim women as
imprisoned in harems, enslaved, starved of sex and sexually voracious...
Her uniqueness in character and behaviour is demonstrated from the start of her letters through to
the very last ones. The attention to detail gives the letters more of a descriptive insight. As well as
this, using an epistolary form allows the reader to create an intimate relationship with Lady Mary
Montagu. Her accounts become more personalised and informal to the reader, to the point they can
both emphasise and sympathise with her. The development in character mentioned before is also
more believable and apparent due to the personal and conversational tone of the letters.
Oscar Wilde s purpose in using the form of

Brand Identity
Non profit and for profit organizations use PR, advertising, and social media to build their brand
identity. A brand identity is the visible elements used by a brand. These being color, design,
fonts, and symbols. These aspects are used consistently to identify and distinguish the brand in
the consumer s mind. St. Jude s, a non profit organization, has a logo that is used on their
website, social media, t shirts, and other types of promotional merchandise. It is present on all of
their hospital buildings. The logo shows a silhouette of a small child with St. Jude s Research
Hospital and finding cures. saving children in black text underneath it. The logo has been used by
St.Jude s since its conception in 1962. It is identifiable and clearly shows who they are and what
their organization s mission is. The brand identity that St, Jude s has helps promote themselves and
become more recognizable in the public eye.
Like St. Jude s, Nintendo, a for profit business, is building its brand identity through their PR and
advertising and their social media. Throughout Nintendo s many years of business, they have had
many logos for their company, consoles, and other products. Their most used logo is white text that
reads, Nintendo in a red oval around the text. This logo is used on buildings, clothing, the game
consoles, and pretty much all of Nintendo s other merchandise. This logo has been used

Foreshadowing In Fly Away Peter
Fly Away Peter, written by David Malouf, exposes Australian soldiers horrific involvement in World
War I by utilising a variety of literary devices to convey his central ideas. Through the experiences
of the protagonist, Jim Saddler, Malouf establishes the destructive nature of war on the natural
environment, by employing foreshadowing and contrasting imagery. To further highlight the
destructive nature of war, Malouf emphasises the dehumanising state of the soldiers by utilising
inter textuality and grotesque imagery. To overcome the destructions of war, Malouf demonstrates
Jim s unique ability to employ a separate reality as a coping mechanism through the bird motif.
Lastly, Malouf highlights the perpetuity of life s natural cycles through... Show more content on

The text commences with positive imagery that illustrates the idyllic natural setting of
Queensland and returns to positive imagery in the end. Malouf positively describes the motion
of the ocean waves in Queensland which they rose, gathered themselves, stood poised a moment
holding the sun at their crests, then toppled. There was a rhythm to it . The brief moment of the
waves standing poised in the sun symbolises that all things in life have their unique moments,
and this idea is reinforced by Imogen, life [means] a unique presence, and it [is] essential in
every creature . The fact that there is a rhythm to the motion of the waves as it rises and topples,
it conveys that the unique moments in life will end eventually, but the cycle of life will repeat
itself. Thus, the rise and fall of the waves metaphorically mimic life, in which life continues
relentlessly. The waves are also later described by Imogen as hang and fall, one after the other in
decades, in centuries , which symbolises the rise and fall of civilisations. Analepsis to previous
ancient civilisations such as the Egyptian Empire, confirms that civilisations collapse due the
destructive nature of war and as a result, new civilisations soon arises. The new civilisations will
continually evolve in a never ending cycle which ultimately emphasises the cyclical nature of life.

Some of the exhibits that I saw were the rock, fossil and history exhibits. The one I found most interesting was the rock exhibit. This exhibit was made up of rocks found in this general area (El Paso New Mexico and Mexico). It had a wide range of rocks from crystals to quarts to obsidian rocks. The one I found most beautiful was the Calcite crystal. This crystal was from Durango Mexico and it almost looks like a white rose. This experience for me was very educational. • 6. Human Suffering And Media Analysis In the context of the current mediatised society, the media have become the platform where the encounter with the other increasingly takes place, and in particular, where the public becomes aware of circumstances of human suffering that are happening far away from their immediate locale (Thompson, 1995). Even though the media have expanded the field of view of the spectator, the mediated encounter with the distant sufferer is structured over an abysmal gap (Bauman, 1993) between the scene of suffering and the safe reality of the spectator sheltered behind the screen. This paradox has raised a number of moral and ethical considerations. The question at the heart of the debate is to what extent the new visibility of the other can in fact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking a normative standpoint, Silverstone maintains that the media should function as a public space that works for the human condition and not against it (2007: 33), a moral space that promotes the inclusion and care of the other. This cosmopolitan disposition towards the other, especially in the context of distant suffering, can then become the foundation of transnational solidarity and of the pursuit of justice overall (Silverstone, 2007). Silverstone advocates for the media to adopt specific representational principles that foster this sort of cosmopolitan engagement. In particular, he proposes the notion of proper distance , a theoretical principle that captures the dialectical coexistence between the common humanity of the other and his irreducible difference (Silverstone, 2007). Proper distance , in other words, identifies the degree of proximity that presents the other as other with humanity (Chouliaraki and Orgad, 2011); who deserves the dignity that is to be accorded to all humans but is also unique and implicated in specific geopolitical ... • 7. Well-Organized Government In Ancient Egypt Introduction The people of ancient Egypt started as hunters and gatherers. Then they settled in the Nile river valley. When the people settled the food was more plentiful. And when the food was more plentiful there were more. And with more people, they had to have all of the seven indicators. Government Every complex society needs a well organized government. In ancient Egypt having a well organized government was important. The pharaoh was the most important person in the government. Ancient Egypt also had a complex religion that tied into well organized government. The ancient Egyptians were deeply religious. The ancient Egyptians would never worship without being purified. They also believed that their gods had supernatural powers, and if they worshiped their gods they would live a happy and long life. A way to worship gods is to pay tributes. They were so religious that they built temples. They would also perform ceremonies so that ancient Egypt would not fall into chaos. How does complex religion tie into well organized government? Every government has a pharaoh and in the religious perspective, the pharaoh is also a god. The people of ancient Egypt would treat him like a god and worshiped him. They would pay tributes. And when he died they covered him in gold and riches and everything he had before. According to ducksters.com, the people built 2 types of temples the first is cultus and the second is Mortuary the mortuary was built for the dead pharaoh. So the pharaoh got his own temple built. It s difficult to balance sports and extracurriculars with school and homework, and, come junior and senior year, collegeapplications and jobs as well. All these activities in students lives leave them little time for a good night s sleep. Unfortunately for them, sleep is actually crucial, as it has not only been shown to improve GPA, but also help students with memorizing information (Hershner). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal of this restructuring would be to encourage students to go to sleep at an appropriate hour and get enough sleep to function best the next morning. The tenets of the new schedule would be a later school start time, which we hope would allow for students to sleep longer in the morning. Schools that have implemented later start times have experienced both academic improvements and better overall school climates ( Why Change ). Also, later school times are important for teenagers as their circadian rhythms make them more inclined to go to bed later than adults (Hershner), so more sleep in the morning would account for their different sleep habits. Furthermore, a limit would be imposed on homework load. Students often stay up very late finishing their homework, so limiting homework loads will curb this problem. Additionally, we would offer seminars for parents at schools, teaching them about the recommending tactics to help their kids not only get more sleep, but work more efficiently. Studies have been conducted that show improvements in kids sleeping schedules when parents impose and enforce a sleeping schedule (Richter). Alongside teaching them useful parenting practices, we would also teach them of the importance of sleep, and how it has been linked to academic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Law Of Gratitude Essay 8.The Law of Gratitude: The Law of Gratitude plays out similar to the Law of Cause and Effect or the natural principle of action and reaction. As we look at the law itself, when we express thankfulness to the God Force for that which we have received (even though it is still in the unseen), it is an expenditure of force, therefore our gratitudecannot fail to reach God, and when it does the reaction is an instantaneous move toward you. Consider two properly aligned magnets. They are two forces moving in opposite directions while moving toward one another. Gratitude draws you and the Creative Force, God, directly toward each other. If our gratitude is strong enough and consistent then there will always be a move of that which we are co creating toward us. When the God Force moves toward us it brings all that it is. The Law of Gratitude also dictates that if our heart is not full of gratitude, then something else will take its place. Physics teaches that nature will not tolerate a vacuum. That is to say that if something is removed then something else must take its place. If our hearts are not filled with gratitude, then our hearts will be filled with ungratefulness. An ungrateful heart will take you from what you want as rapidly as a grateful heart will take you toward what you want. The Law of Gratitude nourishes our faith, because as a grateful heart and mind continually expects good things, expectation becomes faith. This faith then, becomes both the cornerstone and the capstone of what it is we are building which comes only from our Universal Supplier, God. Gratitude toward God has the power... Time travel stories have been used in different films and other art media, but 12 Monkeys treats time travel in an unusual way. It is reasonable to say that 12 Monkeys does not have a very clear narrative like other classic Hollywood films do. And this messiness is mostly caused by how the filmitself deals with time travel and how it presents it to viewers. 12 Monkeys creates an uncertainty of time travel. This sort of uncertainty does make the narrative less comprehensible, however, it is this uncertainty that attracts the audience. The story of 12 Monkeys itself is not very hard to understand. • 18. Taking a Look at Hinduism Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex, offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of what happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many, God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being, everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus worship many Gods, but they also believe that the divine is singular or one. These Gods are representations of different aspects of the overall God. Although their worship of multiple ... • 22. The Importance Of Public And Public Health The health of the public is a constantly growing and never ending cycle. There is always a threat or growing concern that can/will affect people s health. Public health can be defined as a society coming together and working diligently to ensure the conditions in which people live are healthy. Ensuring that the conditions are favorable where people live and increasing their healthconditions should be a goal for all societies (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). Community health is also an important topic when looking at public healthbecause there are some similarities with both. However, community health is explained as having a defined group of individuals whose health status, conditions and actions are aimed at promoting, preserving and protecting their health (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). An example of this would be a place like Atlanta, Georgia reviewing the health status of everyone living there. Working together with public and private entities, they can protect, promote and preserve the health of people in Georgia (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). Other than public and community health, there is another form of health called personal health. Personal health is defined as an individual that makes decisions on the health care received for themselves and/or family members in their household (Bartlett, Jones, 2010). This differs from public and community health because personal health is focused on the individual /and or family where community and public health are aimed at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my personal opinion, what makes a person memorable is how he or she has impacted your life, for better or for worse. She has a Pulitzer Prize to prove it, and she is also a guest writer for the New York Times and various newspapers. Her latest work is Cleopatra: A Life. Schiff tells how Cleopatra was a very remarkable woman. Even after Octavian, Cleopatra was known as the wicked women in the world. Schiff tells much about Cleopatra s life involving Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Schiff ensures us that Cleopatra had one of the top educations from Alexandria. Caesar did not only stay in Egypt for Cleopatra s seductress ways, however Caesar wanted to get rein over his enemies. When Caesar was murdered, by a group of schemers, in the Roman Senate, his adopted great nephew Gaius Octavius was his only heir. Mark Antony thought he was heir to the Roman Empire but however, Caesar had different plans. Janet Suzman tells the story of how Shakespeare wrote the play about Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Suzman says Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a horrific story of a formally mighty conqueror who is infatuated with the Queen of Egypt. Antony was so obsessed with Cleopatra and how she led him to his death. (Draycott, 38 44) Suzman said that Cleopatra and Antony had a horrible love story. Improperly balanced chlorinated pools can actually cause severe asthma. These findings may explain why swimmers are more prone to exercise induced asthma than athletes in other sports. Results show that nitrogen trichloride or trichloramine is a cause of occupational asthma in swimming pool workers like lifeguards and swim instructors, says Dr. K. In Dr. Thickett s study, his subjects either stopped taking inhaled corticosteroids altogether, or their asthma symptoms decreased significantly once they were placed in an environment away from the swimming pools. However, England s industrialization was privately incentivized. Rather than the government creating economic incentives to modernize, England s few natural resources and therefore ambition to take the resources of others caused private capitalists to invest money into building factories and growing industries. In 1843, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Birthmark, a tragic and unexpected short story. In the beginning of The Birthmark, Alymer, a man of science, marries a young beautiful woman named Georgiana. One day Alymer noticed a mark on Georgiana s cheek, and over time his obsession with the thought of removing it scientifically caused the death of his wife. • 30. Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining Gram Staining Formal Lab Report Miranda King Intro Microbiology Dr. Hendrickson 13 September 2017 Purpose For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining technique, as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram negative stains. This technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Safranin. These dyes are used in order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For example, Gram positive staining will result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will result in a red or pinkish color (University of Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016). When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is categorized as a gram positive stain because the alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was not successful. Its cell wall is made with a thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses the crystal violet dye color after being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become categorized as a gram negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall made of a thin layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the red dye (Case, Funke, Tortora). Bacteria have different shapes and these shapes determine what family they belong in. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam... The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great change in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly toward colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most of all women, and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help them to rebuild their identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can be used to examine it from different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain s Testament of Youth, for example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own diaries and letters sent from around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a woman s perspective during the war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary source and a collection of stories all looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo in particular and it provides multiple views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a secondary source, as the book is a collection of her own essays and thus likely has notes of personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing in the facts and somewhat journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. • 33. The Challenges Of Diversity In The Film Industry Diversity in The Film Industry There is no questioning the fact that diversity is vital to a community; however, the way the film industry is makes films is forced and feels as if they are simply checking off boxes to create diversity. This allows a question to be posed: is no diversity better than forced diversity? This is a question that comes up a lot in the twenty first century and is something that is asked when looking at film. The film industry before the twenty first century featured very little diversity, and minorities usually received supporting roles. Diversity has increased in the twenty first century; however, there is still room for improvement. One criticism of modern film is the lack of true diversity. People believe that film has been whitewashed or the historical event and cultural practices have been changed to be more desireable or more easily understood for white audiences. A mild example can be seen in Aloha which was released in 2015, where the actors casted for asian and hawaiian role were white. An extreme example can be seen in Birth of a Nation released in 1915, where white actors donned black face paint and fought against Ku Klux Klan members that were protecting the Aryan cause. Unfortunately, with this freedom , people lose their sense of truth and reality, and must rely upon the ideals of times past and present to ground themselves in this world. The Fire Next Time, written by James Baldwin, examines this issue in Down At The Cross , an account of the author s experience with founding his reality on religion and with his continuing struggles with race and society. In this religious record, Baldwin discusses how he finds a home in religion and how he spends the majority of his life in his religious career, both of which offer a sense of safety for his lost soul. Consequently, he then describes his mistake for trusting religion to act as his foundation as he then learns the stupefying truth of his God s negligence, how his God takes no action to save Baldwin s people from the depths of society. Therefore, in order to prevent the reader from resorting to the same alternative, Baldwin intends to persuade the reader to not base their reality upon the beliefs of others or of a denomination, but solely upon the facts of life which stand before them. He hopes to discourage the reader by informing of the horror and the harrowing pain he experiences with having his world shaken to the foundation. Baldwin achieves this by accentuating the shock of his realization about religion and his God, showing the reader how this affects him as a means of persuasion. Perrott !2 In order for Baldwin to convince the reader (to not base their reality in the beliefs of others) (is this necessary to keep?), he elaborates upon the lurid realizations of his God and of his faith, which changes his and the reader s perception of religion for the remainder of the book. Since these feelings are particularly strong for Baldwin, he mirrors his experience with strong emotional language to bring life into the story and accentuate the importance of the event, which grasps the reader s attention as well as their interest. Baldwin exemplifies this strategy when he illustrates the severity of his emotions at the realization of his God s negligence. Baldwin describes his agony: ...and naturally, ... • 41. Critical Analysis Of Hester Prynne In the critical essay On The Scarlet Letter by D.H. Lawrence, Lawrence criticizes the portrayal of Hester Prynne in the novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lawrence displays his views of the novel by using juvenalian satire to express his thoughts in a humorous, insightful way. He narrows down on his scrutiny of the novel s main character, Hester Prynne. In his analysis, he focuses on Hester Prynne s devilish acts in seducing Dimmesdale which is a hidden sin. D.H. Lawrence effectively utilizes a mocking tone, a staccato like syntax, and a biblical allusion. Lawrence uses a mocking tone to convey his thoughts about how Hester Prynne is the devil. One example of how Lawrence demonstrates a mocking tone is when he states, Oh, Hester, you are a demon. A man must be pure, just that you can seduce him to a fall (Lawrence 1). Lawrence criticizes Hester by saying that she has the capability to destroy someone who is perfectly pure. Even the best person in the world would instantly fail just because of Hester according to Lawrence. He also states that The greatest triumph a woman can have, especially an American woman. Is the triumph of seducing a man: especially is he is pure. (Lawrence 1). Lawrence especially berates Hester for committing adultery, as he believes that adultery is one of the biggest sins that one can commit. His mocking tone in this remark, conveys how he thinks that Hester is the worst character in the novel due to all of her actions. Lawrence s mocking tone shows how he thinks that Hawthorne accepts adultery too easily. In order to express Lawrence s dismay for Hester Prynne, he uses a staccato like syntax. He uses short sentences to express the importance of what he is saying. For example, he states Flop. , Flop goes spiritual love. in two different lines (Lawrence 1). By stating these quotes, it also represents how Hester would never find true love because of how much of an awful person she is He states his thoughts in two short sentences to express his ideas quickly and effectively. This is because he thinks Hawthorne is too accepting about the idea and act of adultery. His use of these short phrases allows Lawrence to express his thought efficiently and effectively. ... The speaker is taken to this bower on the viewless wings of Poesy (Ode 928) whose song has put him into such a sublime state that his senses are heightened; due to these heightened sense, the speaker turns to synesthesia. Synesthesia, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the use of metaphors in which terms relating to one kind of sense impression are used to describe sense impressions of other kinds (OED). This form description is used to describe the speakers the sensations he is feeling and the images in his imagination. The imagination is where Keats s bower is located which affects the definition of the bower. A bower, in the poetic sense, is supposed to be an idealized abode, not realized in any actual dwelling (OED) which is the reason the speaker flies there to escape, due to its idealized state. However, Keats s ideas on the imagination affect the bower and ultimately lead to the speaker s choice to leave the bower and return to reality. Through this journey, synesthesia is only seen in the instances of intense sensation in the speaker s sublime state; meaning, when the speaker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Lady Mary MontaguВґs Travel Writing Essay Lady Mary Montagu s letters are a form of travel writing that contributes to the exploration of issues; such as feminism, gender, health, class and culture through an epistolary form. During the time in which Lady Mary Montagu wrote her letters travel was a means for commerce and trade. Contrasted to this form of travel writing, is Oscar Wildes Symphony in Yellow. This is in the form of a poem, which is simplistic in its structure and appearance but not in its content or meanings. The title of the poem suggests that it has a substantial connection to music; however the reader is presented with a poem centred on the narrator s view of a location. Similar to the form of poetry Oscar Wilde s The Harlots House explores the idea of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her open attitude allows her to see society both subjectively and objectively. She is both understanding and does not stereotypically analyse situations. To the reader her experiences provide a varied account of different cultures and the gender norms within them. They believed I was so locked up in that machine, that it was not in my power to open it, which contrivance they attributed to my husband. Here again she acknowledges the way other cultures differ from her own. Judith Still recognises the way in which she is; concerned not to fall into the Orientalizing clichГ©s of Early Modern men s travel writing, which typically represents Muslim women as imprisoned in harems, enslaved, starved of sex and sexually voracious... Her uniqueness in character and behaviour is demonstrated from the start of her letters through to the very last ones. The attention to detail gives the letters more of a descriptive insight. As well as this, using an epistolary form allows the reader to create an intimate relationship with Lady Mary Montagu. Her accounts become more personalised and informal to the reader, to the point they can both emphasise and sympathise with her. The development in character mentioned before is also more believable and apparent due to the personal and conversational tone of the letters. Oscar Wilde s purpose in using the form of ... • 46. Foreshadowing In Fly Away Peter Fly Away Peter, written by David Malouf, exposes Australian soldiers horrific involvement in World War I by utilising a variety of literary devices to convey his central ideas. Through the experiences of the protagonist, Jim Saddler, Malouf establishes the destructive nature of war on the natural environment, by employing foreshadowing and contrasting imagery. To further highlight the destructive nature of war, Malouf emphasises the dehumanising state of the soldiers by utilising inter textuality and grotesque imagery. To overcome the destructions of war, Malouf demonstrates Jim s unique ability to employ a separate reality as a coping mechanism through the bird motif. Lastly, Malouf highlights the perpetuity of life s natural cycles through... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The text commences with positive imagery that illustrates the idyllic natural setting of Queensland and returns to positive imagery in the end. Malouf positively describes the motion of the ocean waves in Queensland which they rose, gathered themselves, stood poised a moment holding the sun at their crests, then toppled. There was a rhythm to it . The brief moment of the waves standing poised in the sun symbolises that all things in life have their unique moments, and this idea is reinforced by Imogen, life [means] a unique presence, and it [is] essential in every creature . The fact that there is a rhythm to the motion of the waves as it rises and topples, it conveys that the unique moments in life will end eventually, but the cycle of life will repeat itself. Thus, the rise and fall of the waves metaphorically mimic life, in which life continues relentlessly. The waves are also later described by Imogen as hang and fall, one after the other in decades, in centuries , which symbolises the rise and fall of civilisations. Analepsis to previous ancient civilisations such as the Egyptian Empire, confirms that civilisations collapse due the destructive nature of war and as a result, new civilisations soon arises. The new civilisations will continually evolve in a never ending cycle which ultimately emphasises the cyclical nature of life. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
