through the use of literary elements such as irony and symbolism; thus, this allows Paton to
strengthen the delineation of hypocrisy, dichotomy, and and prejudice that is instilled in society.
One of the most significant literary element used by Paton is symbolism. Symbolism allows Paton
to convey the political division that occurs within South Africa, specifically Ndotsheni. Paton
conveys this message using the Titihoya bird. In the novel, the Titihoya is displayed singing
near James Jarvis s wealthy farm in Ndotsheni above the hills, conveniently named the High
Place . Kumalo describes this place, saying There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the
hills. These hills are grass covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it
(Paton 1). In this part of the land, the land is fertile and there is an abundant source of water and

Taking an abnormal psychology class is not part of my requirements for my degree, but with my
wanting to work with children and their families, I feel that this course was beneficial for me to

help people that may be suffering from the many disorders that we covered. As I have mentioned
throughout the semester, I or someone I know has or is suffering from many of the disorders we
have discussed. I personally have struggled with addiction and bulimia in my past, and I feel that

similar disorders. My father suffers from schizophrenia, although he attempts to block his
disorder out and refuses medication. This can be extremely hard for both me and my child to
visit him because he is different. I try to remember that the disorder is not his fault and I also try

for both of us. I feel that learning a little more on schizophrenia was helpful for me and I plan on

The shower scene is a greatly crafted scene that truly captivates the death of Marion and the

Fear as the Dominant Theme.
Every single person in this world fears something, and there is magnificent amount of different
types of fear that people know of. Each type of fear has a different name. For example, fear of
change is called metathesiophobia, and fear of darkness is called Achluophobia. Fear can be not
only a phobia but in a novel it can be represented as theme. One of the examples of a novel that has
a lot of fear in it is The Chrysalids by John Wyndham which took place in the future, years after a
nuclear holocaust has devastated large areas of the world. In that novel Wyndham explores
many themes throughout the text, the main one being fear. The existence of fear in this novel is
a critical factor in the unfolding of the plot. Most of the problems that occurred in John
Wyndham s tale happen because of fear. Overall, this is shown through everyone s fear of being
different, fear helped to develop Petra s character, and by everyone thinking that if a baby was
born as a blasphemy, the women is always the one who is responsible for that, but never the
man. In places like Waknuk people are terrified of being different in anyway in the Image of
God. To begin, David, who is the son of Joseph Strorm, is praying in the church for dead Aunt
Harriet and he is overwhelmed by what will happen to him if someone figures out that he is
different. Please, please, God, let me be like other people. I don t want to be different. Won t
you make it so that when I wake up in the morning I ll be just like everyone else, please, God,
please! (Wyndham 76). This quote tells the reader that even David is scared of being different.
His fear was caused by Aunt Harriet s death because of her child s small deviation. He finally
comes to the understanding of how much trouble he can get into because of his own deviation.

David explains that children who do not behave well are frightened by their parents with the

modifications in your own life if you are considering the life changing statements he made. The
purpose of this book was to inspire and change young adults habits that they have conjured up. I
have actually been able to apply some of these habits in my own life.He has taught me and some
of my classmates many lesson as we have read and overviewed the text. These principles or
habits have taught me about a healthy relationship, how to make smarter choices for my life,
trusting that I have self worth, and how to make me and my parents relationship better. When
people talk about being proactive they are most likely referring to the first habit in the 7 Habits
of Highly Effective Teens.This chapter is about controlling your responses to certain situations.
For instance if you are in a tough position instead of overreacting and handling a difficult
situation badly you could calm down and thoroughly think your response out.If you look in the
listen to your language section it says, You can tell the difference between proactive and reactive
people by the language they use. This is true just by the way you sound you can tell how people
will react to a situation. This habit is crucial when it comes to problem solving and if you end up
in a bad situation. You can not control what happens to you but you can control how you react. If
you apply these concepts to your life things will not be as complicated.

Should Vending Machines Be Allowed
I believe that it is time to consider putting healthier options into Mountain View vending
machines. My child has expressed wanting to have better options to choose from, rather than
having to opt for chips or pop tarts. I do not want to see the removal of everything that is bad or
that has too much sugar because I do believe that is taking away the students rights to make that

In this project we had to pick an environmental issue in our area and research it. In this project I
chose coastal erosion because it was the most common environmental issue. This is a problem
because coastal erosion causes many people to lose their home and jobs that live on the coast and
if this continues all of louisiana will be under water then nobody will have anywhere to live in
Louisiana. This an issue not in just in Louisiana but on most every coastline in the world.

Detective fiction is filled a wide array of characters and plotlines that can be analyzed for cultural
significance and meaning within the literature. I chose to analyze The Diary of Anne Rodway and
The Speckled Band because they were two very different styled stories in their narration, character

Kayman describes the literature of female detectives in regards to their relationships, falling in
love, and their ability to gain the trust of others rather than solving crimes through knowledge.
This is evident as he says, Rather than the intellectual, it is, then, the actress whose presence one
most feels in stories of lady detectives during the period: the figure who, with her capacity for
disguise, pretense and deceit, embodies both the cultural stereotype of the promiscuous,
mendacious, and hysterical woman (Kayman 52). While women are viewed with the finesse and
the discrete ability to gain the confidence of others, Kayman never mentioned the success of
women detectives nor their capabilities to solve crimes like the male detectives. He talked far
more in depth on Sherlock Holmes and his unquestioned intellect showing the distinct
discrepancy between the two gender portrayals. Kaymen uses Holmes as an example when he
says, the ideal detective required not only the power of observation and that of deduction but also
knowledge , and the pieces of obscure information with which he is constantly surprising us are
