Design Principle
The large, bold text reading the artist’s name appears in
both the primary optical and strong fallow areas drawing
the audience’s attention to it immediately and
establishing who the artist is that is releasing the album.
The album title itself is located across the weak fallow and
terminal areas; however, it still stands out against the
image as the font is bold and coloured blue which makes it
prominent against the white of the artist’s shirt. The
additional information about the album’s release and
record label is at the bottom of the page in the weak
fallow and terminal areas. The font is small and differs
from the bold typeface used for the album and artist
names. This indicates that it is less important information.
Typefaces
The typefaces utilised for the artist’s name and album title
are large and bold giving these titles a sense of importance
and letting the audience know what the album is called and
who is releasing it. The font is a sans serif style suggesting
that the album will be pop or of an alternative style as this
font choice is informal like these genres of music. The other
font style utilised on the advertisement is a more formal,
serif font. This style is not bold or striking like the artist name
and album title, suggesting that this information is not as
important.
Imagery
High-key lighting has been used on the image to create a happy
atmosphere and connotations of pop music. The artist’s facial
expression, however, contradicts this by being serious and
almost angry. The shot of her is also slightly low-angle making
the audience feel as if she is dominant and angry with them. She
is looking down on us like she is superior to us. These features
create connotations of rock music, again, contradicting the pop
music-like feel that the high-key lighting creates. The soft blues,
greens and whites of the background and the artist’s shirt are
juxtaposed against the red of her hair and lips making them
stand out and, again, creating connotations of rock music and
also adding to the dominance of her appearance and her femme
fatale look. This portrayal of the femme fatal creates a positive
representation of women as they are represented as powerful.
Design Balance
The page is well balanced because of the centralised text
and image of the artist. The text is in line in the centre of
the page and seems to thin into a triangular shape the
further down the page it gets, creating a symmetrical
shape. The image of the artist itself is also symmetrical.
Her hair is pushed over her back on both sides creating an
even frame for her face. Her even collar and two pockets
on her shirt also create symmetry within the image as her
body looks the same on both sides.
